How to make Clay Characters .......2007-07-14
How to make clay characters by Maureen Carlson is not available to buy in Australia. I had it on loan from my local library but only for limited periods and it was never long enough. I am happy to say that although it may have been printed initially a long time ago I am delighted to have obtained it as it has such excellent instructions and lots of handy hints for the polymer clay first timer onwards. To anyone reading this revue who wants another hobby to try (even in Australia) buy this book and you will be hooked.
The mere fact that it is still in print is a sign of how good it is for any age. Easy to follow and great fun all you need is polymer clay your imagination and this book.
Favorite.......2007-07-10
I have four of Maureen Carlson's books. They are all fantastic.
This one is my favorite. Very clear instruction. Gets you started and wanting to sculpt all the time. I love it!
a marvellous book!.......2007-06-20
Indeed a marvellous book you should have as one of your clay-book collections. Maureen has good eyes and different angles when seeing new things, and new thoughts to convert them into brilliant figurines. I love her ideas of how making the snakes and the dragons, and her tricks to get new color mixtures are awesome.
I almost bought her books entirely, and have no regrets so far. Thanks to Amazon for superb service, even though I must bear waiting for a month and so for my orders.
My advice, you always can give your book collections to your kids when you no longer need them.
Great book .......2007-06-17
Wonderful book with all sorts of tips and techniques. Being a novice, I found so much that I will rely on over and over again. Well written, with many pictures as well that are just beautiful. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to get into doll making.
Intriguing and Stimulating.......2007-03-31
I'm new to polyclay, but I'm really excited at the possibilities that have crossed my mind as I read this book. It was all new to me and the techniques seem simple and clear enough that I can take off into another world of "folk" with all the ideas spilling out onto my notebook paper. Thanks to the author for well-written and illustrated pages, ideas, and inspiration. For the "advanced clay-er" this may be too simple, but being a crafter from other mediums, I often go back to the basics when I'm stumped for ideas for something new to try. If you don't find this book to your liking, please, donate it to your local public library. It's a fantastic find for beginners and young children who naturally create. My copy stays right here in my collection availale for my family to use to inspire them to try new things. Thanks again Maureen.
Book Description
The author tells you everything you need to know to make attractive, functional earthenware in this fine book. More than sixty photographs show each step described as well as many finished items. These, plus descriptions of ancient pottery types from the Anasazi to Guatemala, provide a great number of ideas for primitive pottery projects. There is a glossary of terms and a list of references.
Evard starts by describing what clay is used and how to find it. He then describes preparing the clay for use, discusses reasons and techniques for adding temper and illustrates how to make pots using all techniques. Finishing and decorating the green pot are described and illustrated, followed by a detailed discussion of primitive firing techniques. Evard then tells how to cook a meal outdoors in a pot you have made yourself. A great book for anyone into primitive arts or survival skills.
Customer Reviews:
Thanks for the Great Help!.......2007-09-14
Although not a large book, this is a great little primer for doing your own primitive pottery. All the basics are covered in an easy to understand way and by following them there will be primitive pots firing in your yard in no time! This book has everything needed to not only get you started but carry you forward to completion. Well worth owning and reading again and again.
Good book for novice primitive pottery makers.......2003-07-11
I never previously attempted any pottery creations and had no idea where to start. This book pointed me in the right direction and gave me confidence that even a beginner might make pottery pieces. Following directions I dug clay from my property, tempered it, made the pottery and pit-fired it. It actually turned our reasonably well for a first attempt. An easy to read and follow beginners guide. Well worth the price!
not too exciting.......2000-09-01
i have been hanbuilding and pit-firing pottery for a number of years and was not particularly impressed with this book. it might be a good source of information for beginners but it is not at all inspiring or even visually appealing. there are several other books about the techniques involved in this type of pottery production that folks should take a look at first.

Book Description
How to make colorful, imaginative mosaaics - 12 projects.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not the best.......2000-03-17
This is a good book for beginning mosaicists. It follows the usual format - history, techniques & materials, gallery, projects.
I recommend it because it covers all of these topics quite well, it's well laid out and it's more affordable than many similar books.
However.
I bought this book because I admire Elaine Goodwin's work, so I was disappointed that only about half of the projects feature her designs.
I was annoyed to find that of the 4 pieces on the cover, only 2 are projects - the other 2 are from the gallery. That's a bit like false advertising IMO.
Finally, the designs/templates used in the projects are not clear and easy to use - in some cases they're no more than fuzzy photographs of pencil sketches. Perhaps the author doesn't want us to slavishly follow her designs, but for someone who can't draw it's frustrating.
Finally (and now I'm really splitting hairs) the list of requirements for each project is badly presented, squashed into a little box although there's plenty of space on the page. A case of design conquering usability I guess.
Nice layout and well written How-to.......1999-04-24
This is a very pretty and well laid out book that takes you through several types of mosaic projects. Nice how-to with very clear pictures.

Book Description
This book describes easy to use methods of fine tuning a combustion system for maximum efficiency. It is written in the language of the lay person. It is a comprehensive treatment for determining when your kiln or furnace is performing at peak efficiency. All of the factors which affect the firing of a kiln or furnace are presented so that you can know what to expect. You can actually "tune" a kiln or furnace so that it works better. How does weather, humidity, atmospheric pressure, winds, and temperature affect kiln or furnace performance? The answer to these questions eliminates the concept of a "stubborn" kiln. These same factors can also degrade furnace performance. What affect do heat losses from a stack or chimney have on firing? You will be surprised. Stack draft, negative pressure, primary and secondary combustion air, thermocouple, afterburners, inches of water column: all these terms and more will roll knowingly off your tongue like honey drips from a biscuit.

Provence: The Art of Living
ASIN: 1556708475 |
Amazon.com
Centuries of occupation by the Romans, Moors, Christians, and Greeks--and the influences of both Africa and Europe--have touched the architecture and spirit of the magnificent Balearic Islands, making them a place of curious contrasts. The 1800s and beyond saw a steady stream of well-to-do European bourgeoisie purchase homes and holiday retreats on these tranquil islands, places that today's modern travelers rarely experience beyond a glimpse from a tour bus or a morning walk. Thankfully, Majorca: The Art of Living opens up the gates of 30 of these beautiful homes, sharing with us the remarkable gardens, living rooms, verandas, and general lifestyles of some current residents of not only Majorca, but also Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera.
A collaboration between respected photographer Sølvi Dos Santos and local writer Lanning Aldrich, the candid shots and fascinating interviews with homeowners astutely capture the very unique personalities of each of these 30 homes. Here is a monastic-style building with 30-foot walls built around a peaceful courtyard. In a whitewashed bedroom, serene shafts of natural life pour in through a strip of clerestory windows; a simple wooden table and six chairs overlook a grove of olive trees and a modest rectangular swimming pool. In contrast to this uncomplicated home is the regal splendor of a house belonging to descendants of the Marques de Vivot (a well-known aristocratic family). Grand is the operative word here--Flemish tapestries hang from walls, Italian paintings decorate every room, an enormous oak library is filled with the books of 10 generations. From the grandiose to the simple, from gothic to modern, from decidedly Spanish to definitively African, this exquisite book inspires thoughts of travel and better living. --Naomi Gesinger

Beautiful.......2000-10-25
Packed with gorgeous photographs. Great design inspiration. Mostly interiors and "patio" settings of current homes, many overlooking hills. Not a historical record, this book features contemporary homes, many with mediterranean and modern design influences mixed with the Majorcan architecture and palette.
Book Description
Imagine yourself living in Spain. You head home after a fiesta, eating churros and chocolate and celebrating with your neighbors. You know the locals and speak Spanish with ease. You show visiting friends around with the confidence of one who belongs. Author Nikki Weinstein shows you how to make your dream take shape. She left her life as a magazine writer in New York to make a home abroad in Spain. While some give up—daunted by the financial, bureaucratic, and decision-making issues that accompany a move so extraordinary—you'll be led step-by-step through the information you need on visas, money, jobs, housing, safety, language, culture, and history. Nikki has done the research and made the mistakes—so you don't have to. There's a place that matches your budget, needs, and dreams: perhaps it's an apartment in the vibrant city of Barcelona, a villa in sun-drenched Andalusia, or a beach house on the dramatic Galician coast. You can make it happen. With Living Abroad in Spain, it's easier than you think.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect book if your starting your Live in Spain research.......2007-09-10
I just decided to look into moving to Spain and being green behind the ears this was the perfect book for my stage of research. Some "living in spain" books might be more detailed or specific, but Weinstein's book was written as if the author and I were sitting across the table at a Starbucks. She gave a general introduction to the highlights of not only history and culture but of the region and what locations will fit "me". A very easy and motivating read. If your still wondering if you want to make the move or where to go, this is your book.
Informative and useful--with one glaring exception........2007-04-15
In general, this is a useful introduction to the issues an expatriate will face when moving to Spain. As an American citizen who is considering making the move, I also like that the book is written by an American (most English-language books on moving to Spain are written by--and largely for--UK citizens, who have it much easier than Americans with regard to residency and work permits).
However, I find it frustrating that Weinstein completely ignores the major catch-22 that bars most non-EU citizens from legal employment in Spain: most Spanish employers will not hire without an existing work permit, but it's extremely difficult to get a work permit without having a standing job offer. Even Google, an American company that has a branch in Madrid, will not consider applicants who do not already have EU working papers in hand. Weinstein does not say how she got around this problem; does not say how any other non-EU citizens have gotten around this problem; does not give any pointers on where to find companies that might be willing to sponsor Americans for a visa; in fact, does not mention this issue at all.
Had I known of this glaring, hugely important omission, I would not have bought the book. Now you know. If what you want is general information about the logistics of life in Spain, this book is great. But if you're a non-EU citizen who is looking for guidance in circumventing the major catch-22 of employment in Spain, look elsewhere.
For beginners.......2005-08-29
Nicely written book. Some info may not be very useful, especially if you have been to Spain. Genreally, a pleasant reading and good organization. Will give you some idea on what living in Spain is like. You are better off if you know someone in Spain or have relatives.

Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous, but not a travel book.......2000-10-05
This book turned up in a search for travel books on Portugal. It is a lovely photographic tour of Portual, with a little special emphasis on the homes of the nobility and wealthy business families. The inns and hotels that are mentioned in an off-hand manner are very pricey. However, once you've visited here you might well find this book to be a lovely remembrance of your trip.
A beautiful start.......2000-04-10
Not really about living in Portugal, but rather, a nice resource to start deciding where one might want to live or travel in that pretty little country. It contains brief, well written summaries of Portugal's distinctive geographic regions, and is beautifully photographed. A large book for displaying a livingroom coffee table, and a nice read on a rainy day.
I've been there..........2000-02-01
Not a light 5 stars, but well deserved. "Living" does not denote a short stay, but an investment. A beautiful book of very fine pictures. Includes many 'coordinated', decorated interior photographs of interesting household living quarters. The copy is well considered, and without "fluff", but written with a tender understanding of the country and its people. I have found this book to be a wealth of information and enjoyment. (don't look here for 'where to dine' -- it's in a different class).
A lovely cocktail table book, not a guide.......1998-04-10
The title led me to think that this book might be a guide to actually living in Portugal. It is nothing of a sort, but rather a beautiful book of pictures of life in Portugal. Lovely to look at, with the usual tending-to-purple travel industry text. If it's a book of very nice photos of Portugal you're looking for you'll enjoy this, but for some solid information about Portugal look elsewhere.

One of the best, but..........2005-08-27
I am looking to invest in property in Portugal and this book is proving to be really useful. It provides excellent guidance on all sorts of aspects from choosing a location for your Portuguese home to working and setting up a business.
It gives good guidance on the legal and financial aspects of the purchase, including mortgage, which can be somewhat difficult in a foreign country. Also additional information on tax and other important legal considerations. It goes much further, with sections on renovating, letting and selling, a bit too early for me but good to be able to read about it.
I would say there is only one weak point in this book, the advice on learning the language. I speak Portuguese and my recommendations would be quite different. This said, the book directs readers to specialist booksellers where they can see for themselves and choose the best suited course to their needs.
