Another wonderful resource.......2005-08-21
The book covers most of the landscaping issues with easy to understand planting guides. A very good book for planning all or a part of your yard.
Great Idea Book and Reference for Southeast Landscaping.......2002-02-15
I found this book in the library and after renewing it 3 times figured I'd better just buy it. I've checked out many garden plan books, but this one had the info I needed to plan for different seasons, how the plans would look in a few years, and what I needed to maintain the plants. It's specific to the Southeast so I don't waste time on plants that won't work for me. It's a great idea source and reference.
Excellent! Clear instructions with great diagrams........1999-03-23
This book is an excellent guide for the new or veteran homeowner. It's filled with lots of ideas and a variety of plants including trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers and a few annuals. It offers a samples of typical planting scenarios for the home landscaper. Identifying each design as good for sun or shade and showing the variations is one of the best features. Seasonal variations are also helpful. But the best feature is that it clearly diagrams the placement of each plant including distance from the structure and distance from each other. Drawings and actual photographs of plants are also helpful. I highly recommend this book for the new or renovating landscaper.

Love this book!!.......2007-09-11
I have so many landscaping books that I never opened again after the first week I bought them. This is not one of those books. It's by far so much better than most of the other ones out there. It's well organized for info, and the plans are numerous and easy to follow. Not just for beginners. a really great book!
Curb appeal made easy.......2007-08-31
It's great the way these books are customized for each individual climate area here in the U.S. Saves a lot of wasted planning with the wrong plants and materials.
One of my favorites.......2006-05-19
I recently became interested in gardening (now that I have a yard in which I can plant). This is one of my favorite books on gardening and landscaping. Great resource for those of us living in the northeast. Full of wonderful photos, explanations and illustrations. It gives many ideas for addressing certain areas of your yard (i.e. front entryway, patio, rock wall). Explanations are excellent; I learned a great deal from this book. Very well written. Highly recommended.
Have my own and now purchasing for a neighbor!!.......2005-07-15
A neighbor showed me her copy and I had to get one for myself. Great layouts, great plant selections, this book offers great ideas and variations and is FULL of information! I showed another neighbor the garden I am planning and now I'm buying her a copy as well. We are going to have a GREAT looking street!!
This book is wonderful .......2005-05-26
Home Landscaping: Northeast Region is a very informative book filled with beautiful photos. I don't think I will need another book while doing our landscape planning. Landscaping designs, expected sizes of plants and trees and shrubs, different colors and species, how to's, this book will cover all your landscaping needs if you live in new england.

A Must for NC gardeners.......2001-10-29
For anyone who is interested in gardning in NC, this book is a must. Most gardinging books would only concentrate on how good the plant is. BUt this book also tells us some of the "problems" one might have with the plants and what kind of pests/diseases a plant might be susceptible to. I should have given 5-Stars for this book. The reason I did not give is the indexing is a bit confusing -- the botanical and common names are used in mixed mode. This is not a big problem though, once you get used to the book.
Again, this book is a must for all gardeners in NC -- experience as well as novices.
Excellent book for North Carolina gardeners.......1997-11-12
This book has been very helpful for me in choosing, planting and understanding how to take care of annuals, perennials, groundcovers, shrubs, trees, bulbs, vines and herbs that will grow well in North Carolina. The choices at a gardening center can be overwhelming, but Tony Bost's advice can help you focus on plantings that have a good chance to succeed in a N.C. garden. I especially like the great detail that goes into the exact way to plant your selection, and the maintenance of the plant, so that you know how often and with what to fertilize the plant, and how to water and prune it. Tony Bost has also included up to date information on new cultivars that are being developed and relies a lot on excellent research that is currently being done at the Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh.

Hated it! Buy Month-By-Month Gardening in Georgia instead.......2004-12-15
This book was pretty disappointing. The scope of the book was fairly small (one state) yet a surprising amount of plants are left out. The information it contains is ok, but you can get all that information and more in other sources. There is a lot of repeated information on soil amendment and not much information on the care of the individual plants. Often, 3/4 of a page is devoted to a description of the plant rather than it's care. Some references to varieties are given, but not nearly enough. Most planting explanations revolve around starting from seed, transplants are not often mentioned.
I would buy Month-by-Month Gardening in Georgia instead. I got it after I bought this one and it contains all of the information here (sometimes verbatim), but also includes month-by-month tips on caring for the plants.
An incomplete plant list.......2001-04-25
The best part of the book is the introduction. Otherwise, some of the plants I see most often around Georgia are not listed - daylilies aren't in there! Other than that, it is well organized, but I wouldn't consider it a good list of what to plant in Georgia.
Great Gardening Tips for Yankees Moving South.......2001-01-04
I found Walter's book to be a great resource for someone like myself who is learning to garden in Georgia red clay after planting in New Jersy black soil. I keep this book on my coffee table for a quick reference. The material is well organized and easy to understand.
Great resource for beginners.......2000-10-11
I thought this was very helpful, being a recent transplant to Georgia. The information not only gives you the exact planting conditions, a brief history, and several ideal selections, I thought the descriptions were on target. Although yes, I find that other books are more detailed in terms of pests and may have larger pictures, this book gives great instructions specific to Georgia and the west piedmont area of the Carolinas and is a constant reference year round. This is a fabulous book for those of us who want to know what is the best choice to plant in that needy section of the garden!
it is ok, but..........2000-07-17
The book is little more than a list of plants and their major characteristics, information that is available in a better format in innumerable other books. The text isn't innacurate, just limited. For experienced gardeners, Sothern Living Garden Book is much better. New gardeners would probably learn more from the Rodale or Ortho books. The authors are well known southern gardeners; I'm surprised they didn't attempt something that would show their talent better.

Great help book for planning your garden.......2007-10-11
This book has great pictures, design layouts and recommended plants to use together. I refer to it often.
Excellent book for landscape ideas.......2006-10-03
If you don't want to rely on your own creativity for landscaping your property, you need to check out this book. It features 54 landscape designs covering almost any situation, like entryways, streetwalk plantings, corner gardens, slopes, shady areas, woodland gardens, passageways, gardens under trees, mailbox plantings, etc. Every design is beautifully drawn and lists every plant that is included. The plants can then be looked up in the plant directory in the back of the book for more detailed information. An installation guide gives detailed instructions and helpful illustrations on how to build patios, pathways, trellises, gates, ponds, retaining walls, and more. The book also features detailed sections on other landscaping issues such as preparing the soil for planting, buying plants, planting basics, caring for plants, pruning roses, training a vine on a support, and caring for perennials (complete with a list of deer resistant plants). Highly recommended!
Southeast Home Landscape.......2006-08-18
The book was very nice with lots of plans but the cover had about a 3" cut from what looked like a utility knife.
LOVE THIS BOOK...........2006-07-09
Anyone who loves to garden but who has no idea how to start will love this book. The photographs are incredible, the designs are easy to understand and its written in clear and concise terms for the novice gardner to understand and learn from.

A great gardening book for beginners..........2007-06-18
I live in the Northeast and am a novice gardener. This book is great because it gives you a lot of different garden plans, and let's you see what plants look good together and work well together in similar conditions. I also like that it shows a lot of the garden plans in different seasons, and in some cases shows you what your garden will look like when you plant it, then in five years, or ten years down the road.
The book has a great index so you can cross reference and see the same plant in different gardens, and there's a great reference section at the end that tells you all about each plant. It also has one of the best sections I've seen on preparing your garden for planting.

Not for the botanically illiterate.......2002-02-02
I bought this hoping that I would be able to easily identify the native shrubs and vines on my property, but it is not very helpful. It is very difficult to use for someone not trained in botany. I should know, as my training is in aquatic biology and zoology. Even with my biology background, I have not found it very useful so the identification part of the title is very misleading. Also, there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to how the plants are categorized. I was hoping this would be more like Taylor's guides to trees, shrubs, etc. with pictures that then refer to a description, but it wasn't.
An important work, but not best for beginners........2001-07-25
I bought this book because I adore "Gardening with Native Wildflowers" by the same authors. I was a little disappointed because this one is not as reader friendly for beginners such as myself. It does fill an important niche by identifying all native shrubs and woody vines of the southeast, as the title implies, and for this I imagine it would be a must for anyone compiling a serious library and/or study on the subject of native plants. The book is chock full of color photographs, each of which is labeled by the scientific name of the plant. However, I would have liked to see the common name there also (there is a common name index). A beginner who does not need to know about or identify a wide variety of shrubs and vines might be better off starting with a general guide to natural gardening that includes a variety of plant types.

Humid, wet and in Kentucky.......2007-05-31
First moving to KY I purchased $300 worth of seeds from EBAY only to find that my 5 acres was solid clay and would not hold the type of plants I wanted to grow. This book was a blessing, in that it taught me how to plant in Kentucky and which plants would flourish. A plus for anyone in this state.
