Book Description

Wherever you live in the world, you can grow orchids in your garden. From lady's slippers in boreal forests to dendrobiums hanging from tropical palms, orchids provide color and elegance unmatched by any other garden flower. Although it may sound too good to be true, many orchids are actually low-maintenance plants for various backyard habitats — and don't need special pots or greenhouses. In this exciting book, Robert Friend shows gardeners how to introduce orchids into the garden by attaching them to trees, fixing them to rocks and walls, or planting them directly into garden beds. He details more than 500 orchid choices for every garden situation and supplies practical cultivation information. The author draws on a lifetime of experience with orchids to explain how to choose the right orchid for a given climate and how to landscape with orchids in different types of gardens from tropical to cool-climate areas, from large acreages to small courtyard gardens. Growing Orchids in Your Garden offers an array of dramatic ideas for every reader.

With some helpfull hints to grow orchids outside the house, this book choose the right orchids species for the different types of gardens. Though not conclusive with this, it also emphasize the orchids culture on courtyard and balcony, even in indoor gardens. A choice for gardeners and garden designers. Superb photos and a notheworthy table of orchids selection. Alejandro Taborda, ARGENTINA.

3 out of 5 stars Growing Orchids in Your Garden.......2005-08-25

I purchased this book in response to a review in "Orchids" the journal of the American Orchid Society. That magazine reviewed another book, "Hardy Perennial Orchids," by Bill Mathis. In the review they noted that this book is much more comprehensive. That statement is true to a very narrow degree - it mentions more genera of orchids. This book for the most part considers the arrangement of tropical epiphytic orchids in tropical gardens or temporarily set outside during the summer. Thus, the information contained in it is contained in any general book about orchid culture. This book does contain an occasional paragraph, scattered here and there, about hardy terrestrial orchids that may be incorporated into gardens, but without any information about "how to do it." If the reader is relatively new to the keeping of tropical orchids, then "Growing Orchids in the Garden" is a fairly good introduction (to growing them in the house or setting them in the garden for the summer), although there are better general introductions. If the vast majority of US or European readers truly want to grow orchids in their gardens (and there are many that are both easy and magnificient in appearance) then a book like that by Mathis is what you are looking for. It gives detailed instructions, which this books does not cover at all.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Orchid Guide.......2004-11-25

Robert Friend has inspired me to look at orchids in a whole new way. Friend covers everything there is to know about orchids. From the different types of orchids and which type of garden to grow them in, to growing orchids in pots and containers and which pests to look out for.
I may not be able to leave my orchids outside year round, but his chapter on growing orchids indoors is very helpful in keeping mine alive and beautiful no matter what the weather is outside.
This book is really for someone who already had the orchid basics down. But for anyone who grows orchids already, this is a book that might inspire you to look at your plants in a new light.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-09-23

Books on growing orchids as house plants are numerous but information on growing them outside is not as easy to find. Here is a new book on growing temperate orchids in tropical and subtropical regions (i.e. California, Florida, Hawaii and southern regions of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia). The chapters are well organized and the book is well illustrated with color photos of orchids growing in private gardens, nurseries, parks, etc. (most of them in Florida).

Chapter 1 is "Epiphytes: Growing Orchids on Trees," which discusses the requirements of epiphytes, how to attach them to trees, companion planting, and caring for the orchids after they are planted. This is followed by a glossary of orchid genera with information on the culture of each.

Chapter 2 covers "Lithophytes: Growing Orchids on Rocks and Walls" and Chapter 3 "Terrestrials: Growing Orchids in the Ground." Each chapter follows the same format as the first.

Other chapters cover such topics as pests, species or hybrids?, designing gardens on large properties, suburban gardening, and courtyard and balcony gardens. The last section of the book covers growing orchids in containers. A chart of recommended orchids shows name, type, region, main color, flowering season, fragrance and brief comments.

4 out of 5 stars Closed Barn Doors.......2007-01-09

Growing up on a farm, I knew some of the information contained in this book. However, it did a great job of explaining why things are done to make a barn both practical and successful. My family and I had many ideas of how we were to design our barn, but reading this book has allowed us to avoid several of what we now recognize as design pitfalls. With good explanations of each aspect of equine facilities (i.e. necessary facilities, additional facilities, designing techniques, etc.) and great pictorial content, my family and I were able to choose the designs which were perfect for us and our farm.

The only complaint I have about this book is that it disagreed with my original plans... and I was so hurt that someone found a flaw within my perfect self.

A job well done.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect book!!!.......2006-11-01

This book should be ones first purchase. If it does not satisfy all questions then buy another book -but I doubt it will be necessary. I bought all the less expensive books first and wasted my money and valuable time....reading them. I eventually found this book...I wish I had bought ONLY this book. It is fantastic for architects, contractors and simpler folks wanting to design their own structure...anyone considering re-building or starting from scratch will find this is the book that will have saved you thousands of dollars and heartache and then some. No kidding, I second the opinion it is worth every penny. I bought a second copy as a gift for a friend.....I didn't dare loose my copy and besides the author really did deserve every penny for every copy sold on this lovely, lovely book.

5 out of 5 stars Actually worth the money !.......2006-07-05

I really hesitated before I bought this book. I thought "how good could this POSSIBLY be for $150.00." All of my doubts were erased once I opened the cover. I am planning to build a large indoor arena with stable. Every single one of my questions were answered thoroughly and clearly in this book. Beyond that hundreds of details I had never even considered were brought to light in Eileen Wheelers book.

The detail of construction was extensive and comprehensive. This book is defenitely the Bible of stable and Arena Design!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Comprehensive!.......2006-03-15

This book is worth every penny. Anyone wanting to build a great barn or arena should consider this book...especially appreciated the formulas and suggestions for figuring needs for heat, arena floor materials, lighting, etc. The author seemed to think of everything!

5 out of 5 stars A practical book........2007-06-10

In almost every landscape architect's office, you can find two kinds of people: the designers who layout the design and do the color renderings and presentation drawings, and the horticulturists who select the plants. This book will give you a good understanding of both the design and horticultural aspects of planting design, especially the latter.

It is also a very practical book. It'll leave you something useful that you can actually apply in you daily landscape practice after you read it.

      Book Description

CAD Principles for Architectural Design is aimed at design students and practitioners interested in understanding how CAD is used in architectural practice. This book makes connections between the basic operations that are common to most CAD systems, and their use in practice on actual architectural design projects.

The ways in which CAD is integrated into the design processes of several leading edge practices is illustrated. Arising from these case studies is the emergence of a contemporary phenomenon of integrated CAD, in which all aspects of design schemes are brought together within computational frameworks that support the analysis of design proposals.

Szalapaj's view of CAD is one in which computers constitute a medium in which designers can express design ideas, rather than viewing computers as problem solving machines. For creative designers to successfully exploit CAD technology, CAD systems should reflect designers' intuitions as described by designers themselves

*Learn how to express your design ideas in CAD
*Understand the principles of CAD that are essential to all architects
*Turns theory into practice with an international range of contemporary architectural projects

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not as comprehensive as implied.......2006-06-13

Frankly I was disappointed in this book. Its emphasis on landscape only doesn't mean that all the same information isn't already to be found in other sources on building security. Although the authors relish the information on the power of differing explosions, there's not a lot of technical information on actually countering them. Vehicle delivered bomb blasts are pretty much it for the threats considered. And the suggested responses are predictable ones already seen around government buildings. This book might be useful if you have never considered the subject at all; otherwise it's not.

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource for practitioners.......2005-12-12

Today's discussions of the public realm seem dominated by the idea of threat - whether natural or man-made. As designers we have an obligation to respond both to public concerns and to our professional charge of creating dynamic and vital spaces. But how do we create these spaces, and integrate security measures so they're not rendered as arrays of bollards, streetlamps, and planters?

I was pleased to find Security and Site Design to help guide my questions on this issue. Where we as a culture quickly become absorbed in escalating levels of fear, the authors, Hopper and Droge, outline a basic plan for integrating our concerns into our designs. Of particular note is their emphasis that not all potential threats can be nullified through design. In fact, our public places would no longer be the civic spaces they were meant to be if we were to cater solely to our worst fears. I found in their writing a delicate balance between designing to a reasonable threat level and maintaining our professional charge of creating "a sense of place".

The book outlines through examples and numerous case studies the basic physical areas where one can have the greatest influence in terms of security: street, parking lane, sidewalk, building yard, building perimeter, and building interior. Although I was admittedly dismayed to find out at what distance my body would completely disintegrate if standing near a truck bomb, I appreciated the fact that frank discussions about threats and their relative likelihood were contextualized in the practical issues of design decisions that have to be made.

Hopper and Droge do not purport to have all the answers, pointing out that the field of security design is still in its infancy and holds the potential for many technical and programmatic innovations to be made. For better or worse, it looks like we'll be exploring the topic for a long time to come.

      5 out of 5 stars a great resource for 'site-security' design.......2005-08-12

A very good basic resource for understanding what 'physical security' is about and how it can be combined with landscape design to look good and include public amenities. The best section is the collection of case studies of how it has been done well already, such as at official public buildings and public streetscapes. There's a good synopsis of the book on the NJ landscape architecture assoc. (...)

          Book Description

Arthur Mehrhoff’s Community Design represents a unique way of analyzing a community and the steps needed to help design a sustainable community. In this important contribution, Mehrhoff, through his work with the Minnesota Design Team, seeks to "help communities take control of shaping a sustainable future of their own by means of information, insight, and civic dialogue." He urges readers to rethink the shape and shaping of their communities by looking at "community" in a more holistic and multidisciplinary manner. Mehrhoff tackles such topics as defining community, understanding the history of a community, understanding the issues and problems affecting a community, examining the visual aspects of a community, and obtaining citizen opinion throughout the process of becoming a sustainable community. Small communities everywhere can replicate the process discussed in this book. Community Design is well written and thought-provoking and provides a nice blend of theory and practice.

This book should be useful to all students, academics, local policy makers, and citizens who are interested in creating a common sustainable vision for their communities.

            Book Description

In this book Nili Portugali presents her particular interpretation of the holistic-phenomenological world view in theory and in practice, a world view which has been at the forefront of the scientific discourse in recent years and which is closely related to Buddhist philosophy. The purpose of architecture is first and foremost to create a human environment for human beings. The real challenge of current architectural practice is to make the best use of the potential inherent in our modern technological age.
