Fast and Fun.......2003-11-10
I made each of these blocks in one evening and then put them in a quilt, alternating solid blocks and adding sashing. It was quick and fun to see each critter come together like magic. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, although you have to be careful and sew precisely.
bring the forest alive.......2000-05-29
I loved this book not only for the excellent directions and nice pictures but it gave me an instant craving to start working on a quilt with the simple "puzzle method" patterns. My quilt is finished and looks great.

Great patterns.......2006-08-23
A fabulous book for quilt history lovers. The stories behind these magnificent quilts and the patterns to make some as well. What more could you want! Instructions from the authors are easy to read and execute.
wonderful quilts, great instructions.......2006-03-22
this book would be worth buying for the photos of 19th century quilts alone--especially those of susan mccord. that the instructions are first rate, and full-sized patterns are included, makes it even more fantastic.
the only reason i do not give it five stars is the inclusion of instructions for so many variations of log cabin and other well documented and frequently presented designs. i would have been happier if the space had been used to present less common quilt designs. i love log cabin and many of its variations, but you can find instructions for them everywhere.
that being said, this book is still a great addition to any quilter's library.
Great new book.......2006-01-30
Having been a member of The Henry Ford for many years, I eagerly awaited this book. I was not disappointed. The photography was lovely, and the quilts chosen were beautiful, especially the section on Susan McCord's amazing quilts. I was lucky enough to see these quilts up close and although the majesty of her masterpieces is not as obvious in these photos, they do give one a great idea of how wonderful these quilts are. Many great chapters in this book including a textile timeline. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in quilt history or any fan of The Henry Ford.

This book reads like a devotional for quilters and other people who find that working with their hands is very spiritual. Each story adds something more to the wonderful patchwork world of quilting -- humor, sadness, joy, frustration, peace, creativity, surprise, fun, and so on. I truly have enjoyed reading each story and feel that I now have 67 new friends!
funny book for all who have ever loved a quilt.......2007-08-17
Denise of Pizzazz Studios's story is hilarious. Her comment about the stores with more than one location really made me smile.
Not for quilters only..........2007-07-26
Short happy stories about family and friends, this book is about families with the common thread of quilts.
I love this book and have given it to several friends. Every one has a different favorite. A great book to read and share.
Great Experience.......2007-04-25
As one of the contributors to this book, I have anticipated the release of this book for some time now. As a quilter, I love to hear about other quilters and their experiences and what flames their passion for this art. To me, it is amazing how the same craft can touch such a variety of people in so many ways. I loved reading this book. It makes me appreciate even more how quilting goes beyond the physical quilt and into personal lives.
stories of quilters.......2007-04-20
The passion that Sonja Hakala found in people that love to quilt was amazing. There isn't one story the same why a person loves to quilt. I'm so glad to have picked up this book it gave me a new appreciation of quilting and the happiness it brings to the person who makes them and to many of us who have received them as gifts.

American Doll Quilts: 16 Little Projects that Honor a Tradition.......2007-05-13
I bought the book because I have always loved doll quilts. Now I have a granddaughter and anticipate making quilts for her doll babies. This book has many projects and good instructions, as well as, history about quilts and how they fit into the history of our country. The pictures are beautiful and the book is well written. It would be an asset in any quilt book library.
a joy to read while still being educational.......2006-12-09
These little patterns would be a delight to make and each one represents a period of time in America's history. Having viewed many vintage and antique quilts I find these little quilts are true to their periods in history both in the fabric and the patterns.
In spite of the charming patterns in this book it's greatest value is it's ability to give you a sense of what it was like to be quilting during different times in history.
It is good resource for historical information about the styles and periods of each project but the greatest value is in the learning the history and then making the quilt. There is something about doing something with our hands that makes the history we have learned so real.
Long Awaited Treasure.......2005-01-04
I first became interested in doll quilts in October 2004 as I tired from a creative binge of sewing doll clothes, but still wanted low commitment sewing projects to work on. Little quilts and doll quilts are smaller versions of larger quilt patterns. Doll quilts are an excellent start for any beginning quilter or for those who prefer short term projects. Historically, doll quilts were often made by children as they practiced sewing and quilting skills. Today, they are suitable projects for beginning adults as well as supervised children.
"American Doll Quilts" breaks quilt styles into time periods, giving several different quilt patterns for each time period. There are 16 historical quilt designs in this book; complete with lists of materials, directions, color illustrations of each step and full color photos of completed quilts. The author describes fabric, color, and pattern choices for making historical quilts as well as how and when to tea dye a fabric for an antique look.
Although no specific dolls are mentioned or endorsed in this book, I wanted to mention that the historical nature of these quilt patterns makes them a nice accessory to the American Girl historical dolls (as well as antique and reproduction dolls). A Colonial quilt could be given to Felicity, a Western pioneer quilt could be made for Kirsten, a Civil War Era/Underground Railroad quilt could be made for Addy, a Victorian Crazy Quilt might look nice on Samantha and Nellie's beds, and Depression and WW2 era quilts can be made for Kit and Molly. Pattterns for all of these eras and quilt types are included in this book.
Whether made by an adult or an older child, these quilts are absolutely suited for today's audience of young historians and nostaligic adults. This book is well done. Whether you are interested in sewing historical little quilts for wall hangings, to display with antique or historical dolls, or for child's play, this book can help you create something you will be proud to have made.
