5 out of 5 stars Favorite Graphic Design Book.......2007-09-21

I just finished reading all but one or two chapters of this book for a class where this was the primary text. I have to say that this book goes everywhere with me and has become a favorite. Compared to the other text books I had this semester (and many others as well), this was a breath of fresh air. The writing was never dry and it never dragged. What I read really stuck with me and I looked forward to my weekly reading. Also having the exercises at the end of most of the chapters is wonderful for a student for further learning that truly is self-paced. I plan on doing most, if not all of these exercises for further practice. I am definitely going to have to look into Landa's other titles as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best G.D. Book out there!.......2007-04-04

Was advised to buy from instrucor as additional class materials and found I love this book! Covers from core information to breaking down new media and cutting edge styles. Would not go without this book if you are interested in learning about graphic design as an art and a science. Great organization and use of information -good for any level designer.

4 out of 5 stars Graphics Student.......2007-02-23

I am taking a night course that required this book. Amazon.com had the best price. The book itself has many beautiful graphic illustrations and the text is fairly easy to read. It is not the total snoozer I thought it would be and has many fun projects to illustrate the points made in the text. All-in-all not a bad course book although this is not something I would have ever picked up for personal reading.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Intermediate Designers.......2007-02-20

This book is a big help if you have been thrust into a job where you must come up with a great design for a poster or flyer. Gives you as many or as little steps as you think are necessary. Good reference.

4 out of 5 stars Great Text For Art students.......2007-01-04

Combining great illustrations along with good information, this text truly delivers what many are lacking in. From print to web design, this book explores many facets of Design.

      Book Description

Sharing food is a universal expression of friendship and hospitality, and much of the enjoyment of inviting friends and family to join in a meal lies in the pleasure of preparing it as well as making the table look beautiful. Basic elements of linen, china, glass, and silverware can always be used, but each piece can be set off, complemented, or enhanced in a number of different ways. This gorgeous book is brimming with original ideas and beautiful inspirations that readers can use to create stunning individual table settings. Table Settings explores the history of eating and table settings in various cultures, and then proceeds to analyze different elemental components of a well-set table: china, glass, silverware, linen, decorations, candles, and furniture. This section is followed by a design directory that offers ideas for different theme tables, such as a traditional white-and-glass table, an African table, Citrus Shades, China Blues, Gilded Table, Jewel Brights, Beach Style, Sun-Filled Style, and much more. Each segment covers absolutely everything needed to create a complete, fabulous-looking table. The great thing about this book is that readers don't need to own tons of fine china and linen to make their table look gorgeous. Furthermore, they have the option of closely following one of the theme patterned table designs, or simply using parts of these to create their own individual designs. The book is also chock-full of color photos, making it accessible to interior designers of all levels of experience.

                  Book Description

Since early colonial times in America, Jewish southerners have been tempted by delectable regional foods. Because some of these foods--including pork and shellfish--have been traditionally forbidden to Jews by religious dietary laws, southern Jews face a special predicament. In a culinary journey through the Jewish South, Arkansas native Marcie Cohen Ferris explores how southern Jews embraced, avoided, and adapted southern food and, in the process, have found themselves at home.

From colonial Savannah and Charleston to Civil War era New Orleans and Natchez, from New South Atlanta to contemporary Memphis and across the Mississippi and Arkansas Deltas, Ferris examines the expressive power of food throughout southern Jewish history. She demonstrates how southern Jews reinvented traditions as they adjusted to living in a largely Christian world where they were bound by regional rules of race, class, and gender.

Featuring a trove of photographs, Matzoh Ball Gumbo also includes anecdotes, oral histories, and more than thirty recipes to try at home. Ferris's rich tour of southern Jewish foodways shows that, at the dining table, Jewish southerners created a distinctive religious expression that reflects the evolution of southern Jewish life.

5 out of 5 stars Matzo balls and memories.......2007-05-24

As a Deep South Jewish expatriate, I can't say enough about how thoroughly Marcie Cohen Ferris did her research. There is no doubt that she has covered the differences-and similarities-of the various southern states with great heart and accuracy! The sheer volume of names of those she got family information from is more than admirable. The book belongs in every Jewish household-northern and southern! And non-Jewish readers will get a wonderful picture of the influence food had in Southern Jewish homes-part of American culinary history.

                  3 out of 5 stars Okay book.......2007-05-15

Good book if your into a history lesson but I was looking for more receipies.

                  5 out of 5 stars Outstanding & interesting.......2007-05-13

This book is a wonderful compilation of Jewish history of the South and Jewish food of the South. Fascinating reading about the history and excellent eating. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Too much starch in the matzo balls.......2006-07-10

Fascinating subject matter as I grew up in an area where Jews were a vocal and very assimilated minority. The author's extensive research came to the same conclusions in every chapter: it was hard to keep Kosher in the South and black household help did much of the cooking. As a Jewish woman I am proud of our reputation for a sense of humor and delicious cooking. There are very few recipes; even those were not particularly tempting or typical. The book's major flaws lie in the author's dry, labored, one-note writing style that had me laboring to stay awake.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read and a Surprise.......2006-04-19

I expected a cookbook (which is why it's 4 stars instead of 5, and that's the *only* reason), but got a history book instead.

It's an amazing book. My grandmother worked for Jewish families in the 50s and 60s and I remember accompanying her to their homes when I was a youngster visiting her in NC. There is a certain nostalgia there as the Jewish people always treated her with respect and dignity. All the while they were walking their own precarious tightrope between the gentiles and the black people.

I also found something more while poring over the pages of this book and that is a link to my family's own Jewish past. I have the utmost respect for the amount of research done by Marcie Ferris. It was a herculean task!

Oh. And the recipes (the few) are pretty terrific.

"In Judaism, since the spiritual and the physical are intimately connected, each has the power to enhance and infuse vitality into the other, creating a divine partnership. This concept of beauty and spirituality is most attainable during the Jewish holidays." So writes Rita Milos Brownstein, in the introduction to Jewish Holiday Style, a Martha Stewart-esque treatment of the Jewish holy days. The book is a colorful step-by-step guide to making the highlights of the Jewish calendar as chic and elegant as they can be. Although Brownstein sometimes gets carried away with her rhetoric (Yom Kippur becomes "a day spa for the soul"), her ideas and instructions (such as making your own Chanukah menorah, or celebrating Rosh Hashanah by tasting various honeys) will add some zest to the oldest Jewish traditions. And even Brownstein's excesses have at least this to redeem them: they always encourage the biblical virtue of hospitality.

                  Book Description

At last -- the Jewish holidays transformed into exquisite celebrations, graced with sublime chic and elegant ease for the contemporary Jewish reader. Combining the flair of Martha Stewart with the warmth and accessibility of a delightful neighbor, Rita Milos Brownstein breathes new life into traditional Jewish holiday celebrations.

Entertaining in high style creates marvelous holiday memories for your family, your friends, and yourself. For each of the ten major holidays, Brownstein offers suggestions for creative projects that will bring the whole family together and mouth-watering menus that make it effortless to prepare festivities of true material and spiritual splendor. With more than 85 full-color photographs and easy-to-follow step-by-step illustrations, this captivating book will motivate you to explore your Jewish heritage and use your imagination to make it your own.

Jewish Holiday Style is packed with dazzling and inspiring ideas. For Rosh Hashanah, host a honey-tasting party to celebrate the sweetness of a new year. If you love the ocean, observe Sukkot in a sukkah with a seaside motif -- even if you live in the cornfields of the Midwest. Make your own Chanukah menorahs -- try a simple cruse of oil that reflects the miracle of the oil in the Holy Temple, or an elaborate metalworked candelabra that is sure to become a family heirloom. For the Passover table, create personalized pillows for your guests, which.will allow them to recline like the royalty of old while you serve a lavish yet simple-to-prepare feast.

As part of this eye-opening tour through the Jewish calendar, Brownstein also highlights the historical origins and religious importance of each major holiday with a delightful essay that brings ancient rituals into the modern day. Think of the fast of Yom Kippur, for instance, as "a day spa for the soul...the too rare opportunity to get in touch with the things that really matter." Purim is "the definitive holiday of joy and merriment," commemorating a bright moment in the often somber history of the Jewish people. On Shabbat, "appreciate that you are joining the wave of Jews who are kindling their candles as the sun falls, working its way around the world."

At once a handbook of creative ideas and a primer on the spiritual significance of the Jewish holidays, Jewish Holiday Style is the first lifestyle book to address these all-important rituals and ceremonies, an elegantly designed volume that blends sensational crafts and delectable cooking with the richness of Judaism's 3,300-year-old tradition. Bursting with fresh ideas and exciting new looks, here, finally, is the book you've been waiting for. Let the holiday celebrations begin!

I turn to this cookbook often, not just for the holidays. The recipes are delicious and this is one of those highly visual books loaded with color photos. The matzo ball soup makes the best chicken soup I've ever had. I make it with variations (barley, wild rice) every month. I love this book and am delighted to have found Rita Brownstein. I hope she writes more books. I'll be waiting hopefully.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly inspiring, a little cheesy........2006-10-08

I've turned to this book again and again for Jewish holiday celebrations, and it often has lovely ideas. Just as often, some of them strike me as rather improbable and silly. On the plus side, the sukkahs she describes making are lovely interpretations of the idea, but on the minus side, trying to follow her directions to actually construct one will make you crazy. BELIEVE ME. I've used some of her ideas for Rosh Hashanah cards and been pleased with the results, but the Purim costumes and mishloach manot baskets mostly seem silly. And make your own journal for Yom Kippur? I don't know, I'm always way too busy to mess with something like that. Many of her recipes are surprisingly delicious, especially her orange-chocolate hamantaschen and the raspberry linzer-torte hamantaschen...YUM! So while it's not always consistent, I am glad to have it in my library nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Jewish Holiday Style..........2000-04-19

I bought this book for myself, and five more copies for my friends and family. This passover I am planning on making three matzah-cover vases for my pesach table, and I'm also going to have a glass-square sedar plate. These stylish things are chic and inexpensive, plus they look great with any room or setting. The book itself has more knowledge than any other style book: usually books are either one or the other. Is Ms. Brownstein planning on writing any books in the future?

It will help you style up your house on any occasion like Shabbat to Passover. It is a wonderful guide on home decorating of every Jewish holiday.

The beautiful color images relating to the Jewish holiday of Passover are supplemented by Rabbi Stephan O. Parnes' excellent explanation of the history, materials, and symbolism of each piece. A very beautiful and informative book.
