Book Description

The "other" IIIrd Reich fighter is a symbol of technology as well as sturdiness. A mythical plane, the FW 190 first appeared in 1941 and, from thenon, was to be a real problem to Allied air forces. From the Eastern front to the Defense of the Reich, including the Normandy campaign, the fighter that the last German aces flew with distinction, is illustrated in all its variety of camouflage and schemes and markings.

1 out of 5 stars you get your moneys worth - which is not much !.......2007-08-04

..or in other words this book is very cheap ..and practically worthless to anyone seriously interested in finding out more about this aircraft and the men who flew it..
For a book based exclusively on a collection of aircraft profile drawings the artwork has to 'look right'; here it simply does'nt. A vast selection of 190s are illustrated but they all have curiously shaped cowls and heavily shaded panel lines where none exist, not to mention weird colours...there are no accompanying reference details and nothing in the way of 'unpublished' photos as promised in thr blurb - how do they get away with it! Errors abound on every page...JKG 300 indeed ! The 'icing' is the dreadful English language translation from Alan McKay...awful...'or so the story goes..' to quote him!!
As the intro in the original French edition stated, this work was essentially cobbled together from a variety of well known English language sources and designed for non-English speaking enthusiasts. There seems ultimately little point in offering a translated edition...the bottom line... even Osprey does this sort of thing better..!!

4 out of 5 stars Good quick reference.......2007-06-27

This is a profusely illustrated reference to all the versions of this axis fighter. There are descriptions of units, pilots, the improvements to each model that documents all the rolls that the aircraft was deployed for. It is well written in a concise manner.
Dozens of well done profiles covers all of the models and standard markings.
Good bang for the buck.

    Book Description

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 is regarded as one of the best fighters of World War II. Designed by Kurt Tank, it first saw combat in the summer of 1941 and went on to be produced in several variants. It remains a hugely popular subject for aviation scale-modellers. This book, the first of two to cover the Fw190, provides a detailed, step-by-step guide to modelling the Fw 190's A, F and G variants in 1/72, 1/48, and 1/32 scale. Key aspects such as creating mottled camouflage patterns, undercarriage and cockpit detailing, final weathering and finishing, and diorama bases to display your models are covered.

    Book Description

Of all the fronts fought on by the Jagdflieger during World War 2, the Russian, or Eastern, was easily the most lucrative in terms of targets for the experten. Marry an abundance of targets with the Luftwaffe’s best piston-engined fighter of the war – Focke-Wulf’s Fw 190 ‘Butcher Bird’ – and it quickly becomes apparent why so many Jagdflieger achieved kills that passed the 100 victories mark. Flying in variable weather on a battlefront that was constantly changing, the Fw 190 pilots fought virtually to extinction in both the pure fighter and the crucial Schlacht ground attack roles.

    1 out of 5 stars Nasty.......2007-01-05

The subject is cool, but like other books written by John Weal is very boring. I deeply regret to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Mr. Holmes of the Hurricanes Aces series should have done this book........2006-10-23

I don't know why there is a separate chapter on lesser known FW-190 Aces of the Russian Front just like the one that exists in the book Spitfire Mark V Aces, 1941-1945. Grant, there are too many German Focke Wulf Aces but there is still a number of them that achieve of all or most of their victories flying the Focke Wulf 190. The book should have a list of German aces who score their victories while flying the Focke-Wulf 190 just like the Hurricane Aces series plus have more aircraft plates of the lesser Focke-Wolf aces with 50 victories or less, survive the war and did not die in the postwar so quickly. Mr. Tony Holmes of the Hurricane Aces series should have been the writer of this book. He would have done a superb job.

5 out of 5 stars A RICHLY FASCINATING STORY OF THE FW-190 ON THE OSTFRONT.......2003-10-17

Osprey has produced a first-class book on what was, arguably, one of the finest, most versatile fighter planes to see combat in the Second World War. The Focke-Wulf 190 was rugged, capable of taking enormous punishment in combat (the chapter describing the service of FW-190s in the Schlachtgruppen bears this out), and excelled at low to medium-level altitudes, which was typical of aerial combat on the Ostfront.

This book offers an excellent overview of the operating and handling characteristics of the FW-190. And it also provides interesting accounts by some of the pilots who flew the FW-190 on the Ostfront.

    5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2003-07-26

This was interesting in a historical aspect and helpful in the modelling aspect.

5 out of 5 stars Like the Fw 190, in a class of its own........2002-05-03

The sixth in the outstanding Osprey "Aircraft of the Aces" series, "Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Aces of the Eastern Front" details the ilustrious service and operational record of Kurt Tank's "butcher bird" in the East, from its combat debut with I./JG 51 in the autumn of '42 to the the final (?) 190 "kill" on the Eastern Front (8 May 1945) by a II./JG 54 pilot escaping to the West with his mechanic tucked away in the tiny fuselage compartment!
Stylishly, the book, another of John Weal's brilliant servings, begins with this astonishing incident and closes with a crafty re-working of it. In between is a well-documented history accompanied by expertly collated photographs, colour plates and planforms of this magnificent thoroughbred of Goering's Luftwaffe.
Early in the text, the reader is introduced to the handling characteristics of the 190 alongside I./JG 51 whose task it was to take the new fighter into battle against a resurgent VVS on the Northern and Central sectors of the Eastern Front. From this chapter, the reader gets some very interesting insights into what those hectic days of familiarisation were like as the entire text is awash with the personal anecdotes and eye-witness accounts of those pilots who undertook the training course. This is exactly what makes the book such a compelling read: the author does not allow you a moment's respite, but keeps you strapped and bound in the cockpit. You are there, in your JG 54 mount, scanning the skies of Mother Russia for that Soviet La-5FN or Yak-9D that is also stalking you somewhere in the billowing cunulus. Or you are with a tank-busting "Schlachtgeswader" - the "Slaughter Wings" - above the chaos of Prokhorovka in the high summer of '43, selecting your next victim among the massed formations of T-34s of 5th Guards Tank Army as they hurtle towards II SS Panzer Corps and eternity.
I have read some scathing critiques of the Osprey aviation/military series, however I could find little to fault this title except a dearth of information on the Fw 190D's record viz-a viz the VVS.
Whatever your opinion is of the books of this series, give this one a read if you are a military aviation enthusiast.
Believe me, you will be glad you did!

    Book Description

The Fw 190 was the scourge of Fighter Command from the moment it appeared on the Western Front at Abbeville in August 1941 with II./JG 26. A nimble, speedy and well-armed adversary, the ‘Butcher Bird’ quickly proved superior to all Allied fighters of the time, particularly at medium to low altitude. Led by Experten of the calibre of 'Pips' Priller, Heinz Bar and Walter Oesau, the handful of Fw 190-equipped Jagdgeschwader flew against overwhelming odds, firstly on the Channel coast, and then in direct defence of the Reich when the Jagdflieger took on the might of the USAAF’s Eighth and Ninth Air Forces. This is their story.

    3 out of 5 stars ..a disappointingly brief overview...........2002-12-26

I must admit to enjoying all of John Weal's Osprey titles. He writes well if not always entirely accurately. However this particular volume is perhaps his worst in terms of factual errors. In particular his knowledge of the Reichs defence Geschwader, especially JG 300, seems inadequate here..no, that is not Bretschneider on P.80 and no, the unit was not permanently based at Loebnitz during the winter of 1944. There is nothing either on the last major air battle over Berlin (14 January 1945) and again nothing on the German fighter opposition to Operation Varsity (the Rhine crossings of March 24 1945). During this latter battle, II./JG 300, a powerful Fw 190 equipped Sturmgruppe, specialising in mounting high altitude attacks in massed formation against 8th AF bombers was caught at low level by packs of P-51s and virtually decimated. There are plenty of other minor errors in the text; an incorrect WerkNr. given for Mueller's Green 3 to listing Wilhelm Dormann as having flown with JG 300. The profiles are not that much better, most of the late war Fw 190s being portrayed here with yellow undercowls, where they were simply unpainted. The "black 13" of IV./JG 3 was not flown by Walther Dahl either, since he was Kommodore of JG 300 by July 1944 ! The last short chapter devoted to the ultimate 190 variant, the Ta 152, is translated directly from Willi Reschke's JG 301/302 history but not acknowledged as such... Although it pains me to say it, I think my own article in Scale Aircraft Modelling Nov 2002 has better coverage and better drawn profiles...

3 out of 5 stars A good description of the FW-190 service history.......2000-08-04

This book does a good job of describing the FW-190 service in the Western Front in terms of the units and pilots who flew them. A comprehensive history is provided of the FW-190 from its design stages up until the last days of the war. The highlight of the book is the superb color plates of more than a dozen FW-190 variants clearly showing color schemes and unit markings at various times in the war that make this book perfect for any scale modeller.

The only thing that prevented me from giving this book a 5-star was twofold. There are no interviews from ex-pilots (some of whom are still with us). Also there is a glaring lack of basic technical information (speed, dimensions, armament) on the FW-190 and its variants. Some technical information can be gleaned from the text but it is incomplete. In short, if you are a scale modeller keen on FW-190 markings, you will be overjoyed with this book. Otherwise it is still a good read, just not great.

5 out of 5 stars Great for those interested in the Luftwaffe.......1999-12-21

Interesting book with some amusing stories among the day to day operations of the Luftwaffe. Covers the introduction into service of the FW-190 "Butcherbird" by JG26. Great pictures and color plates.

      Book Description

From the spring of 1942 until the end of the war, Germany was pounded by night and by day by Allied aircraft. A key element of the German defenses was the Fw 190, a rugged, well armed and reliable machine. This book details the Fw 190 and its variants in the crucial years of 1943/45, and presents rare photos of the planes, their crews, and their combat missions.

        Book Description

Kurt Tank was without doubt one of Germany's foremost aircraft designers, responsible for some of the finest products of the German aviation industry, before and during World War II. The range of aircraft types produced by the Focke-Wulf concern was prodigious, covering small biplane trainers, advanced fighters and long-range passenger aircraft, all of which were highly successful designs. Tank was, however, a man of his times, and this album of personal photos gives an idea of the sights and events which interested and surrounded him in the momentous early years of World War II. All the pictures in this book came from Tank's own album, the images being scanned from photographs specially printed from the original 35-mm negatives. All are accompanied by highly detailed captions and descriptive text.

Osprey Modelling Manual 20 examines the Focke-Wulf 190, which entered Luftwaffe service in 1941. It would serve out the war as the best of all German fighters and fighter-bombers, and its variants would include Kurt Tank's extreme Ta152 tank-buster version (4 x 20mm, 1 x 30mm cannon). With detailed step-by-step model photography, specially commissioned walkround photography, scale drawings and wartime shots, these books will provide all the details needed to model the most common A8 version as well as the long-nosed FW190D and other variants. There is a full roundup of the models available on the market, details of where you can see the real thing, a select bibliography, and survey of websites of interest.

a very anorexic volume that comprises a short three page (!)introduction on the history of one of the Jagdwaffe's best fighter aircraft, some walk-around pics of the Champlin Fighter museum's Dora, a few indifferent profiles and a series of model build projects making up the bulk of the 64 pages.... In the modelling chapters Bretscheider's 'red 1' (with spurious red engine cowling and cooling fan blades) and Walther Dahl's 'blue 13' ( here with green spinner!) are featured...the quality of the build ruined by totally erroneous camo & markings..not to mention the 'sit' problems sadly evident. It is obvious that the model builders have little appreciation for the Fw 190 as an aircraft..oh and the bibliography only features references to other Osprey works....I really do not know how Coughlin could have put his name to this as his Osprey Luftwaffe fighters book is not bad at all..Buy any other Fw 190 book EXCEPT this one if looking for a decent reference...I want my money back..!!!

            Book Description

The Focke-Wulf was already a feared opponent on the Channel Front when it appeared in North Africa in November 1942 and, though perceived by many to have been the fighter 'workhorse' of the Luftwaffe on the Western and Eastern fronts during World War II, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 also served in unit strength in North Africa from late 1942 until the German collapse in May 1943. This new book is a day-to-day account of the air war over Tunisia and Algeria told through war diaries and first-hand accounts from both the German and Allied pilots who flew in the theater. Includes appendices with complete loss and victory lists, camouflage and markings of Fw 190s in North Africa, and Fw 190 captured in Tunisia. After three years of in-depth research, the story of the pilots and units that flew the Fw 190 in North Africa can now be told. Using over 100 photos, many from private collections, plus illustrations and profiles, the authors describe the interesting story of the air war fought over Tunisia and Algeria from the view of the Fw 190 pilots.
