Book Description

Timber Press is proud to add John Mickel's classic Ferns for American Gardens to its catalog. Unusual in its specific focus on cold-hardy ferns, the volume is based on Mickel's personal experience as a scientist and curator of ferns at the New York Botanical Garden as well as his years as a home gardener. The bulk of the book is an encyclopedic treatment of more than 400 kinds of ferns with 360 color photos in addition to numerous black and white images. Useful appendices, including updated source lists, make it clear why the American Horticultural Society chose this book as one of its 75 Great American Garden Books.

5 out of 5 stars Ferns for American Gardens.......2007-09-11

This book has a tremendous amount of information concerning ferns in America.
It is certainly well worth the sixteen dollars I paid for it. It contains a guide for flowering plants that you can partner with ferns. It gives descriptions of the flowering plants as well as their periods of bloom.
Also, in the back of the book is a glossary of terms which is very helpful and an index of common names.
If you need to identify a type of fern, this is the book to use. The pictures are very good and the descriptions are concise. Scientific names as well as common names are given. Propagating ferns is discussed as well as pests and hardiness zones. A list of mail order sources for hardy ferns is listed at the back of the book. Lots of information is given throughout. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about or grow ferns.

5 out of 5 stars "Fernishing" information.......2007-02-25

In this excellent book Mickel furnishes an enormous amount of information about ferns without becoming pedantic or over-bearing. It is reflective of the author's life passion and years of hands-on gardening experience with these plants. The book is nicely organized so that a neophyte such as myself can reference it easily yet it provides enough in-depth information to satisfy the more advanced "fern-aholic". There are great sections on each species detailing origin, ease of cultivation and habit. Although one can tell Mickel never met a fern he didn't like, he makes it engagingly obvious in some cases which are his favorites and why. There is a great section on Matteuccia struthiopteris(ostrich fern) which includes a recipe for preparing and cooking the fiddleheads. Differing from the cook's point of view, the gardener steps in to assure us that cutting the fiddleheads brings no lasting damage to the fern! In another section on the Himalayan maidenhair fern he shares his delight in the accidental discovery that this species is adaptable to indoor cultivation.
The general information on fern structure and reproduction is concise and easily understood. There are a host of new terms in Fern World to be grasped, such as crosier, sori and rachis but Mickel makes them all comprehensible. Gardening with ferns, their prefered habitats, companion plants and even propagation are addressed as this is far more than a field identification book. There are an assortment of good line drawings and small color photographs of the individual fern species, but if this book has a weakness I would say that the photos are undersized and there are not enough of them. However, this is not an opulent coffee-table book but a good solid reference book which is easy to use and full of helpful, practical information for the fern-garderner at what ever level. I still rate it as a solid five star garden book.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Ferns for American Gardens.......2006-11-06

This book has excellent illustrations of a variety of ferns with an description of each. Well worth having for anyone interested in a fern garden.

4 out of 5 stars In depth but not a field guide.......2005-11-14

This book contains descriptions of a very large number (over 500) of ferns organized by genera and focusing on North American species. The horticultural information goes fairly deep and appears to be very sound. Cultural information is provided for most species. If you are an amateur gardener, this is a good reference for ferns already in your garden and ones you are considering obtaining from local nurseries or from catalogs. Be advised, however, that the book is not a field guide. Although there are many color photos, not all ferns are illustrated. If you are seeking to identify ferns in the garden or the wild, there may be other books that would better serve this purpose.

5 out of 5 stars ferns for everyone.......2004-06-18

I love ferns and this is a great book full of usful info on where the plant comes from and how to grow them. The intro sections of the ferns are great, giving general info on the genus. The Photos are just fantastic and not just few but tons of them. Most of the entries have a little cheat sheet that gives the basics on every plant before the description. I especially liked the availability entry. It was all good and it felt easy to read. If I saw a fern in a book or store I could look it up and see if I should get it. A great job.

          5 out of 5 stars A serious-minded, well-reasoned discourse.......2006-09-12

Prophetic & Public: The Social Witness Of U.S. Catholicism by Kristin E. Heyer (Assistant Professor of Christian ethics in the Department Theological Studies as Loyola Marymount University) seeks to answer the question "What is the appropriate relationship between religious beliefs and public life?", particularly with regard to the United States, founded on a commitment to religious tolerance. Looking to the example of the Catholic Church and prominent Catholics Michael Baxter and Bryan Hehir, as well as U.S. Catholic advocacy groups The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, NETWORK, and Pax Christi USA, Heyer applies the discourse of public theology to evaluate what constitutes appropriate religio-political engagement. Through her search for norms in case studies, she seeks an equitable balance between Catholic theological belief and the need for public action upon urgent theological issues. A serious-minded, well-reasoned discourse.

5 out of 5 stars Transported me back to childhood.......2007-08-10

Meyers captures what it's like to be a farmkid--to have a haybarn as your playground and to work side by side with your parents in a way today's kids will never know. (I especially love his reference to the sound that your boots make as you pull them out of the barnyard muck.) He captures a farm family's heartaches and proud moments in simple, true style. I gave this book to my father, a Minnesota farmer, because it spoke volumes about what my parents instilled in me by raising me on a farm and the struggles we faced to make ends meet. He loved it! It's not a book for just former farm kids though. Beautifully written. One of my top ten books.

          5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-03-23

This book reminds me so much of my life growing up in a small town in South Dakota, i didn't live on a farm but worked on one and still work on one during the summers. I thouroghly enjoyed Kent's abliltity to describe certain events, sights and the other 4 sense's. A very good book i sat down and read it in a day no more than 12 hours total reading, it sucked me right in.

4 out of 5 stars Fiction flowing from life.......2005-10-07

I have not lived on a farm, rather I am a fan of Kent Meyers' writing and have read all of his other books. I was interested to read this memoir of his life and struggles on his family farm growing up. Threads of his experiences were familiar to me because they have flowed into his stories and have enriched them.

The section of the book "Straightening the Hammermill" is one every father and son should read. What a powerful statement about the strength and ties of family and community and the knowledge passed between fathers and sons.

The world gained a writer but a family farm was lost. Meyers honored that passing.

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional First-Hand Account of Farm Life.......2005-06-26

Anyone wishing to really know what farming was and is about should read this book. Great little stories, wonderful memories to those of us who grew up on a farm, and tear-jerking memories of farm sales. We had three children instead of nine, but many experiences were the same.

5 out of 5 stars Kent could be my brother.......2001-11-10

A friend of mine recommended this book. I grew up on a farm in central Nebraska. When I finished reading this book, I called my mom and asked her if I had a brother named Kent that she never told me about. I started reading her excerpts from the book and we were both astounded by how closely it matched our own lives on the farm in Nebraska, including the blue-speckled canning pot and pressure cooker sitting on the stove all summer! I found particular delight in the essay on the work of "town kids" vs. "farm kids." I look back at all we did, but it never seemed like work. It was just our life, one I wouldn't trade for anything. Like the author, I've been through my father's death, the sale of the farm, and in the next few weeks my mother will be moving off the farm and into town. Loved this book!

          Book Description

Why is it often difficult for evangelical Christians to talk about Christianity with their Catholic friends? What are the differences that sometimes lead to misunderstandings between the two?

Capturing the heartbeat of the Roman Catholic way of life, Talking with Catholic Friends and Family provides an insightful glimpse into the way Catholics think about God, the church, getting to heaven, and the practice of their religion. With compassion and clarity, James McCarthy tells real–life stories that contrast biblical Christianity with Catholicism—and does so in a way that emphasizes what true saving faith is all about. Readers will learn:

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful! Easy to read, yet great information!.......2007-09-06

This book was especially helpful for me in understanding why many Catholics can agree with concepts of the gospel (Christ's diety, actual death to pay for our sin, and physical resurection) and still not be saved! Part of it is that they may use the same terms that evangelical Christians do, but they hold different meaning for them. The book illustrates this very well. It also shows how most Catholics do not believe that faith in Christ's work on the cross was sufficient to pay for our salvation... they believe it gets them 99% of the way into heaven (or purgatory, as the case may be), but they feel responsible to do their 1% to earn the rest of their way.
I appreciated how the author is not a Catholic hater, rather he is deeply moved to help those wrestl;ing with the inconsistancies and frustration that one runs into while trying to merrit their own salvation.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book for anyone trying to understand the Catholic Faith.......2007-06-06

I was born and raised a Catholic and recently left the church for a bible based church. After reading this book (in one day because it was so interesting), I realized how little I actually knew about my old religion. This book is for you if you have Catholic friends you want to relate to. It is an awesome resource for people conflicted w/ the CAtholic teachings and the Bible.

          5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2006-11-27

It's apparent from other reviews this book is a love it or hate it. As I said, I loved it. I was born and raised Catholic and am now at a point in my life of searching for a bit more than what I am finding in my Catholic church. This book helped answer questions to a few things I had questioned myself throughout the years, and it also pointed out many other things I hadn't thought of. I would agree, it does sound a bit harsh against the Catholic faith, but McCarthy backs all of these arguments up with scripture. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Talking with Catholic Friends and Family.......2006-09-17

The author wrote this book because he loves Catholics and wants them to be saved through faith in Jesus Christ, not through their trusting in religious liturgy and sacraments.

We must love Roman Catholics enough to tell them the truth even if they malign and assign all manner of ill to the messenger. Some will become angry, others will respond in faith. Nevertheless, if we truly love them, we will not hold back the truth simply because they are displeased with the message.

James G. McCarthy's writings and ministry never "bash." That is not his calling. This is not a book of unrighteous judgment or condemnation. You may have noticed that every doctrine of Catholicism brings members into bondage to the Catholic church. By that I mean, they need their church to be saved. They require their church to receive forgiveness for their sins. They need their church for everything! Religion brings man into bondage; conversely, saving faith according to God's Word does not.

" Now the natural man doesn't receive the things of God's Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can't know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

But he who is spiritual discerns all things, and he himself is judged by no one." 1 Corinthians 2:14-15

Spiritual maturity demands that we test doctrines, values, and weigh propositions and exercise sensible discretion--in order to discover true character of those claiming to be "Bashed."

James G. McCarthy, a former Roman Catholic is widely published. Without cost, one can read his writings that demonstrate by their character, the fallaciousness and ill will of those who slander him.

As you read, my sincere prayer is that God will reveal His truth to your heart and mind. God bless you.

1 out of 5 stars Talk about Misrepresentation!.......2006-05-23

I bought this book because its title "Talking with Catholic Friends and Family" and its subtitle: "Understanding...How they think and feel; why they trust in Tradition, and What the Bible Teaches" sounded so gentle and loving.

It was anything BUT!! McCarthy's feeling of moral superiority to Catholics along with the glee which he unabashadly gushes in describing various Catholics who have left their faith, has a distinctive non-Christian flavor. What an amazing feat of theology and divine inspiration that McCarthy (who offers no credentials, incidentally) has discovered God's 'truth' all on his own. This book does not represent itself appropriately as a guide to talking with and 'understanding' Catholics, but serves rather as a critical judgement of them and would have more aptly been titled: "The Only Good Catholic is an Ex-Catholic".

              Book Description

In a work of striking breadth and clarity, Paul Conkin offers an even-handed and in-depth look at the major American-made forms of Christianity—a diverse group of religious traditions, each of which reflects a significant break from western Christian orthodoxy.

Identifying six distinctive types, Conkin examines the major denominations representative of each original variety of American Christianity: restoration (Churches of Christ, Disciples of Christ); humanistic (Unitarians, Universalists); apocalyptic (Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses); Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints); spiritual (Christian Science, Unity); and ecstatic (Holiness and Pentecostal denominations). Focusing on the early years and maturation of these groups, he discusses their founders and leaders, origins and Old World roots, and essential doctrines and practices. Conkin closes each chapter with a guide to further reading.

The first comprehensive survey of these American originals, this book will serve as a valuable resource on a number of religious traditions whose members not only comprise a significant percentage of the American population but also make up an increasing proportion of Christian converts worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars Religious scholarship at its best.......1999-09-05

This is a truly outstanding work in American religious history. Conkin delves deep into the historical details surrounding these groups, yet never loses focus of the larger picture and the major themes that make each group distinctive. His chapter on Mormonism is particularly good; no other work sorts out the complicated events and themes of the Latter-day Saints with as much clarity and concision.

Believers should note this is a scholarly work, and deals with questions those inside the faith, in their modes of worship, do not consider. Conkin is very fair with these groups; those unhappy with this work should compare it to the hatchet jobs many professors of religion, or sectarian believers, do to those of other faiths.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating approach to American Christian denominations!.......1998-10-28

I've been waiting for a book like this for a really long time. The book is fact filled, easy to read (for those new to religious concepts & sects) and informative. The author breaks the sects up so that we can better understand the denominations as a whole. The section on Apocalptic Christianity is one of the best. Many members of the sects discussed might be offended as it does point out inaccuracies or missteps within the sect. A great read!!

2 out of 5 stars Harold Bloom is the true erudite.......1998-09-18

American Originals is a poor, dry shadow of The American Religion written by Harold Bloom several years ago. It has none of the thrill of following and intimately disecting the american direction in religious ontology. It has an overall air of Ho-Hum. A feeling of "I wrote this book because I could." Not that its facts are terribly inaccurate but the point is that if I wanted a dictionary of religious history I would have bought one.

1 out of 5 stars This distiguished prof of history didn't do his homework........1998-08-22

His chapter on Christian Science says it all. He didn't adequately research his subject and leaves us all the poorer in our understanding of Christian Science's significance as one of the few religious denominations established in North America. He spends too much time doing a hatchet job on Mary Baker Eddy and minimal effort on the very public and significant religious teachings of Christian Science.
