Bisharat's book is a must for any student (experienced technician or school neophyte) of the design and construction process. It is well illustrated, factual, and accurately explains how the architect /engineer's ideas get transferred to paper and then into reality.

Susan Slotkis' Foundations of Interior Design is a gem of a book. More than just the basics, Ms. Slotkis' book includes critical details: from the historic backgrounds of furniture styles to color theory to the essentials of running an interior design business. And, the photographs and illustrations--many from Ms. Slotkis' own work as a practicing interior designer--support the concepts presented in the text. This book is a must for everyone who is passionate about interior design and wants to learn more.

              Book Description

One of the delights of a visit to Colonial Williamsburg, the restored colonial capital of Virginia, is discovering the great treasury of design to be found in its historic buildings. Every room of every authentically appointed home, shop, and tavern offers inspiration for today's home decorators. Now a selection of these exciting interiors (many of them completely repainted and refurnished according to the latest archaeological information on colonial life), along with contemporary interpretations by best-selling decorating author Tricia Foley, is collected here in the first book devoted exclusively to Williamsburg design.

To make the book useful for home decorators, design ideas are presented room by room: Living Rooms and Gathering Places; The Bedchamber; Dining Rooms, Kitchens, and Pantries; and Home and Garden. Interspersed with the rooms are sections highlighting details of particular importance for 18th- and 20th-century decorators alike: color, mantels, lighting, bed hangings, fabrics, window treatments, floorcloths, china, silver, settees, doors and shutters, staircases, fences and gates, and benches. Following each chapter are the "contemporary interpretations" by Tricia Foley--dozens of rooms decorated using the reproductions, fabrics, and accessories from the Colonial Williamsburg licensing program. Traditional decorating has never looked so fresh, so modern, so livable as it does in these pages.

With more than 275 photographs by Jeff McNamara of Williamsburg's homes and gardens, an engaging text by Catherine Calvert comparing modern living with the past, and a resource guide that helps the reader locate the perfect reproductions, Williamsburg: Decorating with Style offers a look into the rich heritage of early American design, and confirms its enduring value for our own lifestyles.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation was established in the 1920s by John D. Rockefeller Jr. to preserve the plan and buildings of the colonial capital of Virginia and to promote understanding of American life in the 18th century.

The Handbook has for many years been a standard reference work for all engaged in the study of literature and rhetoric. Book Description

Can knowledge provide its own justification? This sceptical challenge - known as the problem of the criterion - is one of the major issues in the history of epistemology, and this volume provides its first comprehensive study, in a span of time that goes from Sextus Empiricus to Quine. After an essential introduction to the notions of knowledge and of philosophy of knowledge, the book provides a detailed reconstruction of the history of the problem. There follows a conceptual analysis of its logical features, and a comparative examination of a phenomenology of solutions that have been suggested in the course of the history of philosophy in order to overcome it, from Descartes to Popper. In this context, an indirect approach to the problem of the criterion is defended as the most successful strategy against the sceptical challenge.

                    Book Description

This study challenges the current view that the originality of Duns Scotus' notion of contingent causality lies in modal logic. It works as an ontological concept, and so provides a point of entry into the foundations of Duns Scotus' metaphysics. As one of two basic manifestations of the active causal power of being, it points to Scotus' underlying ontology, which can no longer be seen as a failure to attain Aquinas' clarity. We have a positive alternative, capable of generating the characteristic Scotist theses: univocity of being, formal distinction, haecceitas, proof of God's existence from possibility, the producibility of God's ideas. The exploration of the role contingent causality plays in Scotus' and Bradwardine's views on free will and predestination, and Bradwardine's claim that `God can undo the past', opens the way towards new interpretations.

5 out of 5 stars A penetrating analysis of Scotistic metaphysics.......1998-01-28

Sylwanowicz presents compelling arguments that the key concepts of Duns Scotus' metaphysics derive from a common metaphysical inspiration: that essence is by nature self-moving. He contrasts this with the Thomistic inspiration: essence as the passive recipient of an act of existence which it delimits. One comes away from the work with an appreciation of the unique genius of Scotus, an increased capacity to view Scotistic metaphysics from within, rather than through the lens of another system. This is achieved with a minimum of polemical attitude toward Aquinas and ought to be welcomed by all, regardless of philosophical formation. Neither is the analysis for historians of philosophy alone. A reading of this book can only have salutary consequences for anyone who actively considers these issues on their own. Expect to be challenged but to come away enriched.

                    Book Description

Court & Garden explores the social, psychological, and especially the formal transformations that led architects to trade the city of public space for the city of private icons. This detailed history of the French hôtel - an aristocratic town house developed largely in Paris between 1550 and 1800 - reveals the hôtel to be a sophisticated instrument of urbanism that both chronicles the demise of the public realm and offers architectural techniques for reconstructing a spatially rich city.

Michael Dennis is a practicing architect. He has taught and lectured widely, and was the 1986 Thomas Jefferson Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia. A Graham Foundation Book.

I studied under Michael Dennis in graduate school and was strongly influenced by his approach to history. I think we'd benefit from rereading this history of a building type. It provides us with a format for analyzing the evolution of architectural and urban types over time, with proper acknowledgment of parallel developments in politics and economy. I urge students of architecture history and urbanism to look closely at this book and study the implications of Professor Dennis' argument.

                        Book Description

Tracing and evaluating the development in the history of Japanese culture and society that permits Japan's rapid and continuing modernization, Professor Yoda provides a new and original approach to the modernization of Japan. He starts from the assumption that Japan was better equipped for modernization because pre-modern Japan had already started to abandon Confucian influences. In his account of modernization during the Meiji-period he focuses on general patterns inherent in Japanese culture and society enabling Japan to integrate foreign elements without having to follow foreign models slavishly. "Patterns in culture", such as the Japanese preference for juxtaposing the new and the ancient, are contrasted with China's preference for discarding past institutions in revolutionary processes. The transferability of paradigms such as "absolutism" is accepted with some modifications. In the major descriptive part of the work, the history of economic, political, institutional modernization is presented on the basis of quotations from original Japanese (and Chinese) sources, arranged within the methodological framework of universal historical concepts, indigenous cultural patterns and specific conditions in both countries. The book is composed of two articles previously published in Japanese and Chinese, two new chapters written especially for the volume, and background information provided by Professor Radtke.
