Too much activist nagging, not enough focus on gardens.......2004-10-09
Excellent resource..........2001-09-16
The book includes a few "designs" for butterfly gardens, but they are general, and you would do better to use the garden designs in THE AUDUBON BACKYARD BIRD WATCHER. Let's face it, where the birds are is where their dinner is and dinner for birds is often the larval stage of moths and butterflies. The plant lists in BUTTERFLY GARDENING are adequate. Certainly the best thing to plant is Buddleia..the butterfly bush. This morning I saw three Monarch butterflies on my lavendar flowered Buddleia. The bush also supports a Grandpa Otts morning glory vine which produces flowers that are a dark bluish purple which changes to a purplish magenta. The butterflies were flitting from flower to flower and the color combo was a knockout.
This little book has much to recommend it. From BUTTERFLY GARDENING I learned the value of Parsley for larvae and that no matter how many butterfly boxes one hangs the little critters are visitors not tenants.

Attract Flying Gems to Your Garden.......2000-06-29
The book can be divided into three major segments: The first two chapters tell us about butterflies (and moths) in literature and lore, as well as nature. The second section (chapter 3) provides brief discussions of over two dozen butterfly species, with an emphasis on food sources for both the caterpillars and adults. The third section is about the plants one can place in one's garden to make it attractive to wild butterflies; not only food sources, but as roosting places. Over 100 plant species are discussed, organized by type (shrubs, trees, annuals) and season. This is followed by a chapter on the general principles of designing a garden for butterflies, with two example garden plans.
A fascinating read for the armchair gardener, no coffee table book yet profusely illustrated, "TheButterfly Garden" is also full of good and specific advice for attracting these beautiful creatures.

Quite a good book!.......2001-08-06
The best butterfly gardening book.......1999-08-09
Charts and diagrams present the information most effectively. Two tables list nectar sources for adult butterflies & larval host plants. Below each plant the butterflies that use it are listed.
There are 5 complete garden plans tailored to different regions of the country, with tips on design, plant selection, water & pest control. Regional butterfly books and contact information for enthusiasts are also listed.
The last section is the best. It contains beautiful photographs of over 50 different butterflies. The range, habitat and favorite plants are given for each species. I love these beautiful gardens with the butterfly bonus.

Butterfly Gardending: Creating Summer Magic in Your Garden
Xerces Society / Smithsonian Institution ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1895099366 |
Product Description
Butterfly Gardening presents everything the gardener needs to know to create intricate, small-scale ecosystems in an urban or suburban setting that can substitute for the rapidly vanishing habitats that are essential to the survival of butterflies. Contributors to this volume include Miriam Rothschild, an eminent entomologist, avid butterfly gardener, and expert in wildflower conservation, who describes the life cycle of butterflies, how and what they see, and how this relates to "gardening with butterflies." Landscape architect Mary Booth provides imaginative garden designs and easy-to-follow directions for designing and planting. Edward S. Ross, pioneer of close-up nature photography, discusses observing and photographing butterflies. The book also includes a "Master Plant List" of species that attract butterflies, butterfly food plants listed by geographic region, seed and plant resources, a list of gardening and conservation organizations, and a bibliography of books and periodicals about butterflies.

Garden Style is a rich book of ideas for those who have sun porches, glassed-in plant rooms, areas in the home that seem to be neither outside nor inside but somewhere in between. There's advice on how to accent plant life with bright patterned rugs, glass topped tables, or wicker chairs. Also included are ideas for kitchens and living rooms "inspired" by garden style: a few gaffes here, including curtain rods made from twigs, which look, well, weird. Much more successful are pages devoted to a "miniature conservatory," like the terrariums kids buy in kits, but these are built carefully and delicately--an ecosystem small enough to fit on a kitchen shelf. For those whose potting sheds have become dark caverns full of lost tools, there's a section devoted to this often neglected but highly important room, one that, if bright and well-organized, can inspire even the most weary gardener: all the tools lined up, all the seeds and bulbs labeled and in order, full of promise. For the city dweller there's advice on roof gardens designed around the skyline, and these have a wonderful feeling of oasis and secrecy. --Emily WhiteBook Description
