Customer Reviews:
A primer worth owning.......2007-03-08
This book is a little distracting because it groups descriptions of trees by their scientific name, which sort of promises a thorough examination of each type of tree, but this book is not very comprehensive in its coverage of either the species it covers or the species readily available to the home gardener. This book has good information on garden design and sincerely beautiful photos. I am consistently happy with any gardening book from this publisher, and although this book provides little more than a cursory overview, it does contain helpful information and attractive illustrations.
Stay woody.......2006-03-02
Jacqueline Heriteau tells how to choose woody plants. She also tells how to get COMPLETE TREES, SHRUBS & HEDGES off to a good start. Then she tells what'll be needed for a healthy, long life.
The way to do that's by answering three questions. [1] Do I have the correct plant for what I have in mind? In other words, do I want a woody plant because of its ability to fence off spaces, such as acanthus and yew shrubs do so well? Or its bark such as eastern ninebark shrub, hickory, and Kentucky coffee? Or fall color such as American sweet gum, ash, birch, black gum, Franklin, hornbeam, shumard oak, smoke, and tulip? Or flowerings such as cinquefoil and summersweet shrubs, redbud, sourwood, swamp magnolia? Or fruits such as serviceberry shrub? Or leaves such as live oak Virginiana, and leucothoe and oak leaf hydrangea shrubs? Or winter interest such as incense cedar? [2] Do I have it in the correct soil, as part of the correct environment? Of course, a woody plant such as American yellowwood, like lavender, makes not-so-correct, poorer soils better. It`s friendly to nitrogen-fixing bacteria which naturally make soils fertile. [3] Will I give it the correct care?
For in landscaping it's important to balance evergreen with deciduous plants, as well as present and future size with space. Then it just comes down to following a pruning schedule; meeting light and water needs; using compost and mulches; and watering. But there'll be constant worries over diseases and pests, of which the most challenging will undoubtedly be deer!
The author offers readers a beautifully illustrated, organized and written book. She fills each page with clear, helpful information and interesting stories. She ends with a much-appreciated glossary and a fine index. What's not to like?

Very thorough introduction to a once practical hand of calligraphy.......2007-02-26
First to Eleanor--thank you thank you thank you! For giving me a handwriting style that will last centuries yet.
Ahem... Copperplate hand is beautiful, and instead of having to guess how to go about making it right from a one-page sample, you have a kind and considerate teacher walk you through a complete tutorial in a real-world classroom pace--with every intention of actually passing down this beautiful hand--warts and elegance--all--from her years of experience into your fingers. This text will be your guide to teaching future generations this beautiful hand. I am honored to have found this book and even more honored to have the chance to learn this hand from a true master. I hope you will find it, as I did, that her tone is considerate, experienced, and helpful every step of the way--she made _every_ _word_ _count_. She will never bore you.
At this moment I plan to work on this hand whenever I take notes. I have a Namiki/Pilot Vanishing Point fountain pen, and although the default nib cannot vary stroke width through pressure--it's a hard nib--I have every intention of enjoying the styling of copperplate in my everyday writings. Like any others who have recently rediscovered the pleasure of writing a journal, I am using a fountain pen or a roller ball on a Moleskine brand notepad. There are many blogs and online write-ups helping you get into this fun activity. Check them out. But I realize I need a cursive hand to work on, otherwise my handwriting would remain illegible! But thanks to Ms. Winters--I am saved!
A beautiful work.......2006-07-23
I have a number of books on Copperplate. This is the most thorough, and produces the best results. Winters sweats the details, both in the letterforms (which all the books cover), but in the fine details of them, details of posture, help in choosing paper and ink (A real issue when trying to learn copperplate -- the right paper can make all the difference).
Absolutely, if you're trying to learn Copperplate, get a copy of Winters and read it. It will make all the difference.
The best Copperplate-hand book to be found out there so far.......2003-09-20
After studying calligraphy through workshops and lessons since 1989, I decided to add Copperplate to my repertoire. I found learning this style requires a whole new "think" on writing: different flexible pen nibs, pen angles, paper slant, stops, bold and hairline strokes, and of course incredible(albeit refined)embellishment. This book holds prime position in my library, is ink-stained and spotted, has pages unbound from overuse, and is the most perfect way to learn this hand as any I have ever seen. Every time I want to use Copperplate on a commission or project, I haul it out to have beside me, to remember all the little specifics that make Copperplate so beautiful. I love this book!
Outstanding.......2001-01-29
I was looking for a book to explain everything from soup to nuts. This is it. A little history, an equipment guide, and then into the basics. Advanced and commercial techniques are covered also. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent Resource.......2006-03-21
This book was excellent for an interior design or architectural student. I highly recommed it!
If you are interested in architectural lettering..........1998-12-18
If you have ever wondered how architects and designers form such uniform letters, this is an essential reference. It is one of few books that focus on the beauty of written forms presented on blueprints.
Outside, the book has a simple cover. Inside, every page is filled with the author's handwriting; the letters are incredibly consistent from page to page.
Although the author presents a limited variety of alphabets, she offers many pointers on how to perfect them. This is clearly a case where quality received a greater emphasis than quantity.
Book Description
Italic Letters: Calligraphy & Handwriting by Inga Dubay and Barbara Getty is the most comprehensive how-to workbook available on learning italic, with 128 pages of step-by-step, beautifully illustrated instruction. The teaching method is hands-on, containing page after page of examples to trace and letters to copy. Dubay and Getty take you through basic italic, formal italic, chancery italic and cursive italic, four classic hands that will earn you a lifetime of compliments in both your formal calligraphy and everyday handwriting. Once you have mastered the letterforms, the authors show you how to use your calligraphic skills to design and produce posters, invitations, letters, cards, booklets, and envelopes.
This resilient book is for serious calligraphers and those who simply want better penmanship.
Italic Letters is for professional and amateur calligraphers, art teachers, pen enthusiasts, and those interested in the book arts. It's also for students, business people, homemakers; virtually anyone who wants to learn calligraphy and improve handwriting legibility. In this age of computer-generated letters and forms, more than ever, people admire the beauty and personal impact of handwritten communication.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners and advanced calligraphers alike!.......2001-04-08
Barbara (and Inga) have done a superb in offering a great textbook for learning Italic calligraphy; one of the most popular scripts for lettering artists. If you're a beginner you should buy this book just to learn discpline and the basics; if you're an advanced calligrapher than you should buy this for the historical portions and to just say that you own something by the marvelous Barbara Getty and Inga Dubay -- two outstanding and legendary Pacific Northwest calligraphers!
Very good teaching source.......1999-03-26
This book has been quite helpful in learning the fundamentals of itallic Calligraphy. It not only gives you a step by step guide on forming letters, it also gives you a good background in the history of Calligraphy and an understanding of its significance. I especially enjoyed the variations it gives on different letters, allowing the student of Calligraphy to formulate his or her own unique style.

wonderful collection of designs for each letter of the alphabet. the quality is high and the cd makes the designs simple to use.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best calligraphic books........1998-02-06
Marie Angel wrote a masterpiece with this book. It is one of the few technical books I have ever read from beginning to end in one sitting. This book is a must for every serious calligrapher.
beautiful and useful.......1996-06-11
This book contains examples of some wonderful small-scale
paintings, along with advice on materials and techniques.
The painting subjects are mostly drawn from nature, with
very few historical examples. I'd recommend this book for
people who are interested in making their own calligraphy
or small book projects and would like to incorporate
natural subjects into their work. It is not a historical
treatment of calligraphy or illumination, but would be
a good addition for the library of those interested in
contemporary work.

Book Description
One of the most unusual personalities on the graphic design scene, Keith Godard is both a poster man and an exhibition designer. Featuring layers of texture that express both the tangible and the intangible, his posters reveal Godard the maximalist, an orchestrator of type, image, and other components that stop the eye, impart meaning, and ensure surprise. His visually complex exhibition designs actively involve the audience, creating spaces in which engaging experiences are had, visual and verbal wit are employed, and Godard's unique blend of intelligence and skill come to the fore.
