5 out of 5 stars Begonia Lovers Guide!.......2007-09-13

Anything and everything you wanted to know about Begonias. Very thorough, good pictures and an excellent reference book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at the Begonia family.......2006-12-02

I found this text to be very useful. The scientific classifications, including leaf shape, texture, stem placment and flower formation were introduced in an approachable and engaging manner. The section on pests and diseases that are problems for begonias was very useful. Learning the origin and natural habitat of various begonias really helps with their successful cultivation. I did not find the more scientific aspects offputting at all. The text is written in a way that I found very appealing, and the large number of color photographs make it visually rich. This is a very thorough and appealing look at the amazingly diverse begonia family.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to become more familiar with this fascinating plant family. For those of us with an acknowledged interest (ie, member of the American Begonia Society here) this book is a real treasure.

4 out of 5 stars Text Reference on Begonias.......2006-01-15

I would give this book top rating if I had had a scientific interest in the history of begonias. I bought it thinking it would have a lot of practical cultivation and propogation tips and it disappointed me in that respect. It's a very thoroughly written and documented botanist's book - not really targeting the home gardener.

4 out of 5 stars I lauged.... I cried... I truly enjoyed!.......2006-01-28

For one of my YAL assignments I read "A begonia for Miss Applebaum" by Paul Zindel.
A begonia for Miss Applebaum is very gripping story. One that holds your attention from the beginning to the very end. I was moved by the vulnerability of Miss Applebaum and the bond she had with her two students, Henry and Zelda. When reading the book, I could really picture this eccentric lady in front of a class full of students who were hanging on her every word. During the course of the story it becomes clear that Miss Applebaum lost the most important person in her life when she was a young girl and that event obviously had a great influence on her decisions in later life. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read about true companionship and never ending love and devotion.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!Ouch!.......2002-10-19

It was a very good book however the ending was very sad.

CRITICAL BOOK REVIEW FOR A BEGONIA FOR MISS APPLEBAUM

A Begonia for Miss Applebaum by Frank Zeildman, is a wonderful book about a friendship between two students and their teacher. Miss Applebaum, Henry and Zelda's eccentric science teacher, retires. Henry and Zelda like to spend time with her, so they go places with Miss Applebaum every Saturday. Miss Applebaum shows Henry and Zelda how to see all things in a differently in a positive perspective, and to really care about all creation....
The main characters in the story were Zelda, Henry, and Miss Applebaum. Zelda is a very kind and caring person, unlike Henry, who really doesn't know how to express his feelings. I liked them both, but my favorite character was Miss Applebaum. She had a way of pulling out the best of both of her students. I think that the theme was that if you try to look at all things in a positive perspective, you can truly live life to the fullest. I didn't like when Bernice, Miss Applebaum's niece, was trying to run Miss Applebaum's life when she would visited her....

I really enjoyed the authors style. Every chapter alternate's from Henry to Zelda's point of view. This is very entertaining because it really let's you feel the emotions from each person. The vocabulary is not difficult at all. I like the way the book is written, and I wouldn't change anything about the book. The book seems to be written for pre-teenagers to teenagers because it has issues that are relevant to teens. I would definitely recommend this book because it has humor, sadness, and parts of the book that will warm you heart.

5 out of 5 stars "A Begonia for Miss Applebaum" was wonderful!.......2001-11-22

Wow,this book was truely the best book I've ever read! You should take my advice, and read this book. Its not just a book for kids either,I think adults would like this book too!Wonderful Book!:)

1 out of 5 stars i fear for my life.......2001-05-17

i found this book offensive for the follwing reasons:

1) after miss applebaum's unfortunate ... in a purely inconceivable way. the young children, no older than many who read the book, ....

well... that's basically it, but that is extremely disturbing! i couldn't believe what i was *reading*. it was the scariest thing i have ever in my life come across!!!! i was expecting a good, wholesome family book, but now i am constantly haunted ....

steer clear! and i once thought that return to oz was creepy. this book is more terrifying than veggie tales.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not what I wanted........2004-06-11

This is a very good, concise book covering history, cultivation, propagation and even hybridizing methods of tuberous begonias. When I purchased this book, I didn't know the difference between tuberous and non-tuberous begonias so I was a bit disappointed to discover that begonias of my primary interest, the non-tuberous type, are barely covered. This review is mostly a warning to those who might not know the difference. The focus of the book is tuberous begonias which are primarily grown for their flowers (and are well-represented by the excellent photos). The author includes a brief chapter covering the various types of non-tuberous begonias (which interest me because of their foliage) and short propagation notes. Non-tuberous begonias include varieties which are cane-like (including the "Angel Wing" varieties), thick-stemmed, rhizomatous, trailing-scandents, Rex and semperflorens (wax leaf - common bedding begonia). If you are interested in these types, you should keep searching for another book.

5 out of 5 stars How to handle and successfully grow a variety of begonias.......2002-10-07

North American gardeners who want to learn about begonias now receive all the information in Begonias, a book devoted to this one plant alone. From its history and key discoveries to its culture and propagation, Begonias packs in details on how to handle and successfully grow a variety of begonias.

4 out of 5 stars A quality book on growing all kinds of begonias.......1999-01-12

This 200 page British entry caters mainly to the tuberous begonia grower but it also addresses the other types of begonias. It does a good job of describing the history and cultivation of each class of begonia. Although only tuberous begonias are illustrated, the descriptions of begonias are well done, giving accurate desciptions of the plants, foliage, growing habits and flowers as well as the parentage for the hybrids. Sections on Growing for Showing, Hybridizing, Propagation, Pest and Diseases, and Composts are well written. I was impressed by the overall quality of the book. Of course, I would have liked more pictures of the begonias. This book is a "keeper".

A milestone for Begonia enthusiasts, it's a reference for the expert, and an excellent how-to for the newbee.

Their names sound as exotic as the blossoms they produce - gloxinias, tigridias, sprekelias - and only begin to hint at the exciting world of color and fragrance that awaits those who venture beyond the local garden center's bins of tulips and daffodils. And while their names may not exactly roll off the tongue, tender bulbs share one key advantage of their better-known relatives: simplicity. Everything required to produce strikingly beautiful blooms comes in a convenient package just waiting for the proper conditions to grow and flourish, returning year after year, provided some basic conditions are met. Tender bulbs are tailor-made for the modern gardener who is always looking for something new to grow, yet who may lack the time or space to maintain elaborate flower beds. These bulbs thrive in containers and quickly fill small areas with a profusion of unusual and strikingly beautiful flowers. The text is accompanied by gorgeous and practical full-color photographs.

Plus, the authors' love of this wonderful plant family just shines throughout the text!

This book is a must for serious begonia growers. It is a begonia growers bible. The Thompson's spent years compiling this now out of print book and there is nothing like it in print. It does not contain the newest varieties but the culture information and pictures make the begoniac drool with envy.

This book is the ultimate reference to the genus Begonia, or is at least for the moment! Our indoor gardening association calls it "the Begonia bible" for good reason; her scholarship and research has yet to be surpassed and she documents most of the many species now in cultivation. In addition, it has a wealth of color and black and white pictures for positive identification. Well worth the search for this out-of-print gem of a resource!

Designing or remodeling a kitchen should be a practical venture, but also a fun one--a concept that also applies to Suzanne Ardley's The Kitchen Planner book. This interactive workbook will stimulate both creative and workable ideas about designing your new kitchen.

Ardley begins by advising readers to create a kitchen based on individual needs. What is the layout of the kitchen you're working with: One- or two-walled galley, L-shaped, U-shaped, or an island? Is the kitchen used by a single person, a couple, or a family? By someone with special accessibility needs? Ardley discusses the benefits and limitations of each floor plan for each type of person.

She also explains the logistics of laying out your kitchen properly, taking into account its multiple functions as a food-preparation and cooking area, serving and eating area, food- and dish-storage area, and--as most party hosts know--a social area. Use the graph paper and the stickers at the back of the book to arrange and rearrange your layout, using Ardley's tips as a guide. For example, she suggests that the sink (the most-used part of a kitchen) be easily accessible from the food preparation areas, and that the dishwasher be located as close to the sink as possible so dishes can be easily rinsed off then stacked in the dishwasher.

Besides planning a layout, you'll also need to decide on the look you'd like for your kitchen. A flipbook section of The Kitchen Planner lets you experiment with different styles (traditional or modern), color schemes, and floor coverings, while color photographs throughout should also spur your imagination.

It's obvious that Ardley has put much thought into the most efficient and practical layouts and use of space for kitchens of every type--even offering advice on kitchen equipment, surfaces, and finishes. She suggests several quick-fix options that may solve a kitchen problem without your having to resort to an entire remodel. The result is an eminently usable planner. --Kris Law

I was seduced by the lovely photographs, fun peel-and-stick arrangements, and cute mix-and-match cut outs. But when I really tried to use the book to plan a practical workspace that will serve family and guests for years, I found advice and guidelines skimpy and vague. I wanted more solid information, including specific attributes of a good work triangle, and important space allowances for walkways, cabinets and counters. I also wanted more attention given to relative costs of materials.

Yet, it was very enjoyable to poor over the ideas, styles and photographs.

            Book Description

Gardeners at every level of expertise will eagerly add Kitchen Garden Planner to their libraries. As hard working as it is beautiful, this book intricately profiles, through spectacular photography and illustrations, the designs and plantings of kitchen gardens in rural, urban, small-town settings nationwide.

13 projects inspire and help every gardener to re-create a lovely kitchen garden.

Approaches to kitchen gardens vary—from simple containers to raised garden beds.

Designs span the growing conditions across America.

More than 400 color photographs capture garden overviews, plus interesting vignettes.

Each project features a color illustration of the design, with a key that clearly identifies plants.

Includes thumbnail sketches of plants, and close-up identification photographs.

Covers basics of kitchen gardens—from soil preparation to succession planting.

            Mail-order sources for all plants.

Author Darrell Trout wrote the well-received Country Home® Country Garden Planner and serves as president of the Long Island Horticultural Society and regional director of Garden Writers Association of America.

            5 out of 5 stars Potager Planning!.......2000-03-24

The concept of a potager, or kitchen garden appeals to me greatly. I very much want my garden to be ornamental as well as edible. Somewhat similar to the idea of "edible landscaping", potagers often intermingle vegetables, herbs, and flowers, sometimes planting them in geometric shapes. Sort of a more formal, yet informal garden. Colorful. Interesting. Not your garden-variety garden. I've been looking for online articles and for books on potagers, which seem to be popular in England, but hard to find in the United States. I haven't been able to find much information on them.

Country Home's Kitchen Garden Planner by Darrell Trout is just what I was looking for. It takes the reader through mini-tours of thirteen different American potagers, with text, photographs, and a plan (illustrated map) for each garden. A few of the individual plant varieties are somewhat unusual, but they described and keyed to commercial sources. The one defect that I found was that a couple of the sources seem to be omitted from the index, or perhaps there was a typo, a minor flaw in an otherwise exciting book. The last chapter talks about basic gardening in general. I only wish there was more on potagers in the Midwest where I live. Then again, where I live, there is wheat as far as the eye can see and not much else.

I really like this book. I wanted ideas for designing a potager and this book has given me lots of ideas. It is strong on the visuals, which I wanted, but also has informative text. Plus, I can just copy or modify one of the garden designs in the book to suit my needs, personal preferences, and growing zone until my own style evolves.

              Book Description

For centuries hidden behind the scenes, the kitchen is now the hub of home life. In design terms, this means that today's kitchen must not only be flexible and practical; it's got to look great, too. In addition to being the place for storing, preparing, and cooking food, the modern kitchen may need to accommodate activities as diverse as washing and ironing, family meals, children's homework or tea parties, romantic suppers, and even full-scale dinner parties. Most of this would have been unthinkable three or four generations ago, when kitchens were kept firmly out of sight. They were always the engine rooms of the house, but not places where anyone who did not have to there would be found. The kitchen is also the place where, traditionally, new design ideas and new technology have entered the home, particularly in the years after World War II, when public taste swung away from the dark and troubled past toward the optimistic, light-filled future. New surfacing materials such as Formica, mechanized assembly lines, and streamlined designs combined to produce the hugely desirable built-in-kitchen. As our lives have grown more informal, the kitchen has become integrated into the living space of the home. In many new houses and apartments, open-plan designs merge kitchen, dining, and living room spaces. Kitchen deisgners, architects, and product manufactuers have responded by creating designs and appliances that are better than ever. The choice of furniture syles and finishes is incrediby varied; flooring and counters are vailable in a whole specturm of natural and man-made materials; lighting is more elegant and practical than ever; and appliances are made in every shape, size, and colour imaginable. I love kitchens. I never miss a chance to visit a kitchen showroom or have a look at kitchens in private homes or in restaurants. So I'm confident in saying that there has never been a more exciting time to create a new kitchen.
