Tanks!.......2007-06-13
Great subject matter, but lacking in some areas. Need more overall photos of vehicles. Other thanthat great!
Book Description
The Sherman tank was the principal US and Allied tank of World War II with more Shermans manufactured than all German tanks combined. Not only were large numbers manufactured, but there was a very wide range of variants powered by different types of engines, manufactured with different types of hulls, turrets and other details. As a result, a M4A1 tank from the Tunisian campaign in 1942 had nothing in common with a M4A3E8 tank from the 1945 campaign in Germany, even if they shared the same name. Consequently, the Sherman has proven to be an enormously popular modeling subject.
Due to the enormity of the subject matter, this book is the first of three planned to deal with this tank and its many variants. It covers the early 75mm Shermans and runs the gamut from the US Army in Tunisia in 1942-43, Italy in 1943-45 and NW Europe in 1945. In so doing, it covers the broadest possible range of variants and details. The builds include:
1.M4A1, 2/13th Armored in Tunisia 1942/43. This is mainly 'out of the box', and deals with cleaning up and correcting the popular Dragon kit and painting it in desert colors.
2.M4A3, 6th Armored Division, Battle of the Bulge, January 1945: an intermediate level build, correcting and enhancing the Tamiya kit, and dealing with the issue of assembling aftermarket (separately available add-on components) link-to-link tracks.
3.M4A1, 2nd Armored Division, Sicily 1943. This is actually an earlier version of the M4A1 than the first type (2nd Armored having been the first division with the Sherman); an advanced level project using the Formations resin hull for the proper 'direct vision' early hull.
4.M4, 8th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, Normandy, July 1944: the 'super'project, including a number of advanced techniques such as swapping the suspension on the Tamiya kit, applying foliage camouflage, building and painting a turret interior and adding figures to the model.
The book also showcases a number of other Shermans already built by the author to demonstrate the variety available.

For advanced Modelers.......2007-05-15
This book is really geared for advanced modelers. It does have some nice color photos including some beautiful models by the author. But the modeling tips are really more advanced and are a bit beyond my current abilities. Maybe someday I'll be able to put this to better use.
Sherman tank.......2007-01-17
I am an experienced armor modeler but I am always looking for new painting and weathering techniques. I found this book to offer several color schemes and painting approaches for the Sherman tank. I have been able to take and adapt the author's ideas to my work on some recent models. My litmus test for modeling books is simple: whether it helps me improve my skills in the hobby or not. This book did.
I do not have the time or patience for scratch building using styrene plastic and I seldom use aftermarket parts on my models--in part because I have a hard time making large cuts on a $40 plus tank model that I may or may not be able to repair. The author provided information about upgrading Sherman tank models with aftermarket parts and scratchbuilding parts. That is not, as stated, my interest, albeit it may be interesting or valuable to another modeler with different skills.
I have three other books of the same genre by the same author; I have ordered another. My opinion is that these are good products for the serious modeler and worth the money.
Dr. Mark McDonald
An excellent modeler's resource.......2007-01-16
Mr. Zaloga, a noted armor historian, strikes again with this volume in the Osprey Modelling series. This volume is themed around the famous M4 "Sherman" tank with the 75mm gun. The later "Shermans" with 76mm guns will be in a follow-on volume. This voluime has a brief overview and several model projects in different scales. The quality of workmanship is tremendous and each chapter has lots of historical information as well as modelling techniques. Each model has in-progress photos as well as descriptions and photographs of the finished project. This book is very handy for beginners as well as advanced modelers and should be in the collection of any person who enjoys military vehicle modeling.
Book Description
It was not the most heavily armored tankâit was tall and ungainly, and its firepower couldn’t match the German tanks it facedâbut by dint of sheer numbers and downright reliability, the M4 Sherman became the winning workhorse of World War II. This book gives readers an inside look at one of the best-known American tanks from the point of view of tankers and other military personnel who experienced the M4 Sherman firsthand. With diagrams and descriptions of various components, it also details the triumph of American industry, which came into the war without a modern tank and overcame the Axis powers with 50,000 M4 Shermans.
From harrowing first-person accounts of tank combat to close-ups of the M4 Sherman’s mechanical make-up, this book gives readers an unprecedented insight into the tank that, more than any other, embodied American pluck and power.

A Sherman modeling MUST HAVE!.......2002-04-08
If you are detailing a Sherman this is the book you need! There are numerous close up pictures of all spots on the tank that modelers rarely get a chance to look at in period photographs. Don Greer took photos of several museum Shermans. He has all the stuff you wish you could look at but don't have an actual Sherman to see ... gun shields, brackets, engines hatches, weld joints, lights, interior equipment, equipment mounts, etc. Most of the pictures are in color. Squadron/Signal needs to do more armor books like this.
Book Description
The M4 Sherman tank was the mainstay of the Western allies between 1942 and 1945. Fast and modern it was a big success and was transported as far afield as Russia and North Africa. The American Chief of Staff claimed in November 1943 it was 'hailed widely as the best tank on the battlefield today…’. However, by the Normandy invasion of June 1944 this was not the case: the new German heavy tanks such as the Panther and Tiger were completely outclassing the Sherman. This title covers the M4 version armed with the 76 mm gun, examining developments such as the HVSS suspension, using much new archive material.

Excellent treatment on the 76 mm Sherman .......2007-06-14
Steven Zaloga does a great job of describing the development, combat performance, and the foreign / post WWII service of the 76mm Sherman.
What I found most interesting was his description of the tankers' reaction to the upgraded Sherman. Most tank commanders actually preferred the 75 mm Sherman because of its better HE performance, and lower muzzle blast. They only favored the 76mm Sherman when they had to face German Panther and Tiger tanks in abundance.
Zaloga also describes the controversy surrounding the inadequacy of the firepower of the Sherman tank -- how Army Ordnance completely misdiagnosed the performance of the 76mm ammo and resisted efforts to uparm the Sherman with a 90mm weapon. Zaloga gives helpful charts on the armor penetration of the 76mm gun, compared to the 17 pounder and the 90mm gun.
The third thing I was fascinated about was Zaloga's description of the combat performance of the Sherman in the Korean War. Initially the tankers favored the M26 Pershing but later on in 1951 they favored the M4A3E8 Sherman (armed with HVAP) more than the M26 due to its reliability, ease of handling, and its maneuverability.
Zaloga was able to give a very comprehensive overview of the 76mm Sherman tank in just 48 pages. I think that Zaloga should write another volume on the Sherman Tank in Israeli service in the Arab/Israeli Wars. The Israeli army used the upgunned Sherman tank prominently in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and the War of Attrition. He could have included a small section about this in the book, but evidently he is constricted by the 48 page limit.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The coloured plates by Jim Laurier are excellent as always. This book should be in the library of any WW2 tank buff.
Totally unimformed.......2006-02-13
Okay...I bought this book to find out how big this tank was!...guess what...nowhere in this book...(a book ON THE SHERMAN TANK no less)...can I find how long this tank is!!!...how wide this tank is. You would think that this would be basic information on the subject. What possible excuse could there be for not having this info readily available in a book on the Sherman tank. Beats me..if anyone can help, please recommend a book where I can find this information.
Another Zaloga Hit, Qualified.......2004-02-02
Well detailed developmental history and World War Two deployment as expected of Zaloga's caliber of work. A tad disappointed that of 37 pages with data, including four with color plates commentary, only two pages and two color plate comments covered the Korean War; a little over two pages and two color plate comments cover post-war exports. The 76mm served barely over one year in World War Two, but fought all three years of the Korean War; that deserves more detailed coverage. I also would have appreciated more details on the disposition of post-WWII U.S.Army occupation forces, such as when which units traded in their older Shermans for newer tanks. Also given short shrift were flamethrower mountings, and while Zaloga goes into some detail on the 17-pounder gun, there's almost no mention of 105mm howitzer tanks the 76mm habitually served with. Overall a very informative work on the development and early deployment of the 76mm gun Sherman.
Book Description
With numbers 13 and 14 the Osprey Modelling Series sees the start of a regular subseries on modelling specific AFVs. The second covers the Allies' most important tank of WW2, the US M4 Sherman, of which 49, 234 gun tanks were built. With detailed step-by-step model photography, specially commissioned walkround photography, scale drawings and wartime shots, these books will provide all the details needed to model the main M4 Sherman version – the M4A4 – and its variants. There is a full roundup of the models available on the market, details of where you can see the real thing, a select bibliography, and survey of websites of interest.
Customer Reviews:
M4 modeling.......2001-05-05
This is the newest in a series by Osprey on modeling specific vehicles. The quality of the book and the modeling techniques are outstanding, with color photos of finished models throughout. Unfortunately, there are too many basic errors in labeling and questionable modelling subjects to classify this as a great Sherman reference. A good number of pages are dedicated to Marine Corp Shermans, with many ideas for extra applique armor. Unfortunately, the author uses the M4A3 for all of his examples instead of the diesel powered M4A2 used by the Marine Corp Tank Battalions in the Pacific. A small portion of the book talks about the background and development of the Sherman but most of it is a 'How I did it' style, similar to articles found in FSM. there is a very nice listing in the back of the book on references and after market vendors. There is also a review listing of currently existing kits with the author's opinion of each. In conclusion, this is a nice book of great looking sherman models but I wouldn't use it as my primary Sherman reference.

Awesome Find!.......2007-09-14
On first view (size and inside design) I was not impressed!
I took a few minutes to review the pages and I was sold! I took the book home and dove right into the exercises that span 6 types of activities! My son, who wants to be a designer @ 16, completed some of the projects until midnight!
I love this book, the breakdown of the projects in the back and the interviews inspire even rookie designers and reignite the fire of the design practitioner. It is a breakdown of the the elements of creativity, including writing projects, design, writing, and problem solving!
Enjoy!
This great book to kick-start creative mind........2007-07-11
I love this book it was full of great ideas, althought some of ideas were recycled a couple of times. This is great book for anyone creative field or whom is serious about creative hobby.
The Copywriters and the Designers are Happy.......2007-06-14
Some of the creative exercise books out there are kind of....well, lame. This one isn't. It's got its share of silliness, but the exercises in this book really get the right-brain working. For most, you don't need anything more than pen, paper, and imagination. A handful of the exercises call for items that you can find around the house or office.
Although they aren't necessarily designed with a team in mind, it's easy to adapt the exercises for a group. Plus, the range of exercises makes the copywriters and the designers happy. My group, a corporate creative team, frequently pulls from this book for our weekly creative stretch. Everyone usually has a good laugh at the end results.
Basically a rip off of a book written in 1999 called 50 Creative Exercises.......2007-04-28
I didn't find anything original in this book. It seems to be a rip off of a series of books written by Dr. Nicholas in the 1990s on Creativity - called 50 Creative Exercises.
Geared toward designers, but great for ANY creative mind!.......2007-04-22
It is certainly what it says! I started tabbing all the exercises that I especially wanted to try right away. Well, let's just say the book looks like it's growing some very colorful hair with all tabs sticking out of it! A lot of them that struck me initially seemed to be photography challenges, but I guess that makes sense since that is one of the things I'm really hoping to improve on this year.
It addition to the exercises, they also have numerous short interviews with some leading designers across a spectrum of website, logo, promotions, illustration, animation, etc. In these, I found numerous ideas and concepts to ponder, some of which I will be sharing with you here in the coming weeks.
Although this book is certainly not specifically geared towards scrapbookers, I think any serious 'creative' would find great value in this book.

Confined Space Entry and Emergency Response.......2006-08-28
Very comprehensive, well laid out and easy to follow.
Most Complete Confined Space Rescue Ext.......2002-11-27
I am the rescue team coordinator for a coastal South Carloina Fire Department. I have been searching for a complete Con Space program to teach our team members and have finally found it.
I met Alan and company about a year ago during the development of this book. They were instructing a Con space tech course. I was so pleased with the content of the course, I new we couldn't go wrong with this text.
The technical information is accurate and easy to understand. The rope and rigging techniques have provided us with another point of view and have been added to our "bag of tricks".
From an instructional point of view ALL THE MATERIALS YOU NEED ARE PROVIDED. Powerpoint, outlines...its all there!
If you are in need of a COMPLETE confined space training curriculum look no further.
Most Useful Volume on Confined Spaces.......2002-10-24
This text is perhaps the best treatise on the subject of Confined Spaces that I have ever had the opportunity to review. The authors have quite effectively provided the most comprehensive manual on this subject to have been published to date. While most authors typically address the subject of confined space entry and rescue as a chapter or maybe just a paragraph or two in some larger volume on a related subject, this particular book is dedicated to only confined space entry. This makes the text unique and quite useful. Its utility extends from the classroom to the field. The latter of which will gain the most benefit from using this text. Virtually every subject of concern associated with confined spaces is thoroughly addressed in the chapters of this book. Specifically, this text provides detailed and accurate information and guidance to those who must either supervise or work in confined spaces. It also has extensive information on work planning requirements and, of great importance, essential rescue procedures. It effectively addresses the hazards and the control measures that have been successfully implemented to either eliminate or reduce/control the risks of hazard exposure to acceptable levels. The detailed treatment on emergency response procedures is perhaps the greatest feature since this is where lives are either saved or lost in the "real world" of confined space operations. In this regard, I found this information presented here invaluable.
Finally, the CD that accompanies the book is extremely useful. It contains videos and other materials that can easily be adapted to supplement existing training programs (or even aid in the development of new programs). The hazard analysis exercises and ready-made PowerPoint presentations are top-notch and will only serve to increase the overall effectiveness of any confined space entry program at any location, worldwide.
ONE STOP RESCUE.......2002-10-02
As a Fire Chief, I am pleased to find this quality textbook on the topic of Confined Space Rescue. The book is a great one for initial rescue training, and also is great reference material for refresher programs, and anyone going into confined space rescue. The pictures and the graphics do not require a "Ricky Rescue Engineering Degree" to understand the material. I believe that procedures and style of rescue presented in the material definitely cover all applicable standards and regulations. I recommend this book, the rating of the book exceeds 5 stars.

Way ahead of its time!.......2003-07-25
This collaboration between Roger Coghill, a Cambridge scientist, and Harry Oldfield, a leading researcher in Kirlian photography and electrotherapy, propose that each organic cell has a unique radio frequency that is determined and controlled by the brain of the organism of which it forms part.
They further postulate that diseases can be induced by external electromagnetic waves and also cured by these waves. By using Kirlian photography this process is made visible and on can see the dark side of the brain whose working is not generally perceived. The book thus explores the effects of a hidden mechanism of the brain that works on electromagnetic principles and is becoming ever more prominent in alternative health circles.
The chapter Life Energies: The Pioneers, provides a list of early researchers into bio-electric life fields, like Franz Mesmer, Ruth Drown, Wilhelm Reich and others and tells the story of how they were persecuted. Royal Rife, inventor of the Rife Resonator, should be added to the list. This chapter also discusses the work of Edward Bach (of the flower remedies fame) and touches upon the life and inventions of Nikola Tesla.
The work of Harry Oldfield is explained in chapter 4 whilst the next chapter looks at morphogenetic fields with special reference to Rupert Sheldrake. Chapter 6 looks at the diagnosis of disease using an instrument developed from the ideas based on the Kirlian method and describes the use of pulsed high-frequency electric currents, amplified by quartz crystals, in the treatment of disease.
Nutrition is discussed in chapter 7, especially the beneficial effects of raw fruits and vegetables. The authors propose that ingesting raw food strengthens the existing oscillations o the ingesting organism in a way that cooked foods do not. This section contains the most beautiful color plates demonstrating the Kirlian fields of various fruits, vegetables and the herb ginseng and provides a list of cooking processes in declining order of residual Kirlian corona discharge. Cooking and steaming seem to be the best methods whilst microwave coking comes in at a surprising third place. Oven baking appears to be the worst method. Concerning methods of preservation, raw food is tops, followed by refrigerator cooling for four hours. Gamma radiation and chemical radiation are low on the list.
Chapter 8 deals with the birth of electronic medicine with special sections devoted to the treatment of cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis psoriasis and AIDS. The final chapter neatly summarizes the promise of electronic therapies. An appendix provides detailed instructions (with illustrations) on how to make Kirlian pictures. An extensive bibliography and a thorough index conclude this very interesting and pioneering work.
The text is illustrated with fascinating black and white photographs (including some of Tesla and his machines), explanatory figures and the aforementioned color plates.
I also highly recommend Vibrational Medicine by Richard Gerber and The Cancer Cure That Worked by Barry Lynes. In addition, I recommend Nathaniel Altman's Oxygen Healing Therapies, Renewal by Timothy J Smith and The Superhormone Promise by William Regelson.
One of the most important books for the 21st. century.......1998-01-04
This startling book offers an insight into the biology of life which explains many unsolved problems in biology. Though Oldfield is first named author, the majority of the work comes from Coghill, whose discovery that the brain regulates cell growth by electric fields directly signalling to cell surface glycoproteins is worthy of a Nobel Prize. Coghill's later studies are confirming this and finally getting into the peer reviewed literature. See his latest book "Something in the Air", or visit his website to learn about tyhe incredible Pontypool Project in collaboration with Columbia Univ.

Only the Good Die Young.......2007-09-11
I was looking forward to reading this book, and I read it in one sitting.
I had met and spoken with Bishop Alphonse Gallegos once, in 1986 or 1987, I believe. It was at a St. Patrick's Day fundraiser. I was a volunteer bartender, and so I was in a position to observe him interacting with everyone else. Previously, I had never heard of him.. Before the dinner started, however, he came up to me and introduced himself. I believe he told me to just call him Al. Later, someone mentioned that he was the assistant Bishop for Hispanic affairs in Los Angeles. He was a warm, very outgoing, "people" person and not the least bit stiff, aloof or patronizing. You would never know he was a Bishop! My own personal conversation with him lasted probably less than sixty seconds. And yet for those few seconds, I felt profoundly valued as a person. I have never forgotten that. The picture of him in this book, verified by my own personal encounter, shows a man fully engaged with life and wholly dedicated to following Christ.
The accident that cost him his life was a huge loss for the church in America. There is a line in a Billy Joel song that goes, "Only the good die young." I have known other good people who died too young, and I have only been able to reconcile it in my mind by concluding that God likes to take the good people sooner rather than later.

Enlightening.......2006-10-06
Reading this book gave me a great understanding into Steiner education. It was the first Steiner book I read and made me change my whole view on which method to use when homeschooling my kids. It has lots of examples from schools around the world about how children respond to this type of nurturing and caring. It won't tell you how to teach using this approach but it is a great spring board, will spark your mind and give you a little taste of the endless possibilities. It is certainly well worth the read.
