1 out of 5 stars Nothing Like the Title Suggests.......2005-07-31

I purchased this book because I own several quilts that I have picked up over the years and wanted to figure out dates and get an idea of how to go about valuing them. While the title of this book suggests this is a possibility a mere page and a half are devoted to identification, dating, pricing, care and storage. The remainder of the book is a catalogue of their collection and while they own some lovely quilts I was not interested in a coffee table book but rather one that provided some real data.

There are lovely photographs of more than 100 quilts and if you want to browse through a lovely collection, this is a nice book, though there are better for this as well. If you are looking for information on valuing your own quilts, this book will get you no closer.

1 out of 5 stars Not another, please.......2003-08-28

I've debated commenting about this book for almost a year now, and now that I have heard there is to be a sequel feel that I can't hold back. In good conscience I cannot recommend this effort to anyone. Such authors who claim to have so much experience should have been able to expound and give reasons for their value conclusions. Unfortunately, those who are unaware do not know the reputation of the authors is very misleading; those with the experience they say they have would have known better. Save your money -

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2002-10-08

I bought it with great expectations, I read it in dismay, I was disappointed with the lack of information. It's nothing more than a printed format for the author's collection of quilts, with no relationship to what's really "out there"....yikes, my educated guesses would make better reading! I had it a week, and then gave it away to someone who likes looking at pictures.

1 out of 5 stars This could have been a good book - but it isn't........2002-09-08

Great photos - nice quilts. That is, unfortunately all I can say good about the book, and there are a lot of better buys out there with nice quilt photos. These self-appointed "experts" have added little to the body of available information on vintage quilts. If these three are appraising quilts then I wonder about the program that sponsors them due to the fact that book is full of inaccuracies. Discussion on how they arrived at the values (and many are questionable) is lacking which would be nice seeing that is their area of "expertise". It is almost like they pulled the numbers from a hat. The book does little to promote the credibility of the author's and certainly isn't the publisher's best effort, it's just a pretty price guide that unfortunately like all price guides was out of date the day it was released.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing...........2002-08-09

First the pros: lots of quality photos, covering a wide variety of patterns and eras.
Cons: basically, this book needs to be titled just "Vintage Quilts". The "Collecting, Dating, and Preserving" material is limited to just 4 pages at the beg. of the book. The rest of the volume is a "Value Guide", with a short description under each quilt photo, a notation as to "excellent condition", "fair condition" etc, and a dollar value estimate. The problem here is that nowhere in the book do they state their definition of what they consider to be good, excellent, etc. There's no excuse for this--both Aug and Newman are listed as judges in the book bios--defining their terms should have been covered in the opening pages. Without that, it makes their appraisals pretty much useless to the reader. (The photos are not large enough to show the quilt's condition.)
The other thing I thought was odd is that they don't compare individual quilts. I.e. show us two twin-size Bowtie quilts and explain [what they're worth.] In other words, show us how to appraise and value individual quilts. Which IS the whole point of the book, according to the title anyway. (Dang it, now I'm annoyed all over again!)
Needless to say, I'm returning my copy.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED!!.......2007-04-01

This is an excellent book, which I really recommend to buy! It contains all the information required to emmigrate, live and work in Australia. Is written in a friendly language and has several useful websites and phone numbers. If you are thinking of emmigrate to Australia or you are already living there, this is the book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Very practical and TONS of information!.......2007-01-10

We are looking to migrate to Australia and wanted to do our research. This book gives practical information on everything from visas to schools to jobs. It gives lots of useful facts that will help anyone looking to move to Australia - such as your drivers license is generally accepted for up to one year, you don't have to get a new one until then! Info on car insurance, cable and phone companies, bus routes, ferry service, PHONE NUMBERS AND WEBSITES! This is THE book to get if you are going to be moving to Australia or visiting long term. Hands down.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect handbook for newcomers to Australia.......2006-08-09

I moved to Australia from Israel, and this book was of great help.

Cultural idiosyncrasies are explained to minimise "culture shock", and possible problems are not avoided (despite the fact that the book is associated with a migration agency as I understood). I'ld say that sometimes the warnings are more like disclaimers, but I guess better safe than sorry. "To do" lists are used where applicable - great help when you're in a new environment thinking what to do next.

Another major "pro" is that this book is not just for people from UK or US or other Anglo-Saxon background. The author takes a generic, explain-it-all approach.

One thing which I think the author should change is the migration section. This is the reason I didn't give it 5 stars. This is no author's fault, of course, but the migration laws in Australia are changing at lightning speed - so there is no point to depict them in such detail. Furthermore, as much of the information in that section was hopelessly obsolete already in 2004 (for 2004 edition), it is plain misleading. Future readers - consult official sources instead, but for the rest, you can safely rely on this book.

Otherwise, I couldn't think of a better source of information.

5 out of 5 stars From someone who actually used it.......2001-06-14

I bought this book when I found out that my company had actually agreed to transfer me to Australia ... but they were giving me very little help in what to expect. This book is not a "travel" guide. It's a practical guide on how to settle down in Australia - things like, how to get a drivers licence, where to apply for a tax file number, even how to do a hook turn in Melbourne. It has never steered me wrong, and I've recommended it to many expat friends.

A must-have if you're thinking about moving there.

5 out of 5 stars the title says it all.......2000-01-23

Having read a number of publications of similar approach I must admit this one's outstanding. The information provided is not only considering almost every single aspect of living in Oz, but most important: it's (imho) spot-on and even pretty much up-to-date. David's writing is fun and easy to read and I would recommend this book to everyone on the move down under.

2 out of 5 stars really out of date and not too helpfull.......2002-02-10

I found thins book to be not at all helpfull to me in moving to New Zealand. In fact I found it to be very out of date and the back section that talks about the Kiwi people and their way of life seemed depressing to me. I found the book to be constantly stereo typeing Kiwis. Sheep, beer, rugby etc. I think that the information in this book was true 10 years ago but a lot has changed in New Zealand in that time, especially in the cities. The information in this book is all available on the internet and it is constantly updated there.

3 out of 5 stars This Book is good.......2001-12-29

I read this book before i went on a vacation to New Zealand last year. It was fairly informative. If you have absolutely no knowledge of the country, this book will be very helpful. However books such as this one are not extremely useful, even if they were updated each year. (which this book isn't) The section about Television in New Zealand was outdated. This book makes it seem that even the best satellite service will not compare to even cable in the US. In other words, their television offerings are scarce. However, I found that to be untrue. Sky TV offers many channels and has good variety. This is just an example of how this book cannot possibly keep you informed about a rapidly changing country like New Zealand. The point is, if you really want the scoop on living in New Zealand, ask your friends who've visited for information. An even better way is to search on the internet. Go to a chatroom that has New Zealand inhabitants and ask them. They are very friendly.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Mark! This book is a godsend!.......2001-07-30

I bought this book about a year ago, just as I was beginning to think of a move to New Zealand. Well, here we are, one year later... and I'll be there in four weeks time!

This book helped me so much that I simply had to write a review of it before leaving. There are only about twenty books on my list to take with me to NZ, and this is one of them. I can't recomend it highly enough.

I've been to NZ a handfull of time now. I find this book to be right on the mark. It captures just about everything you need to know about living and working in NZ, and many thing you don't need to know... but are entertaining in their own right.

Mr. Hempshell touches on everything that a prospective migrant would want to know, with a great deal of humor as well (I love the little cartoons). I also bought books which were supposed to be about immigrating to NZ. Steer clear of these books. They tell you nothing that you can't find out for yourself on the NZ immigration web site.

If you are thinking of moving to NZ this is the book for you. Of all the books about NZ I've bought this year, this is the only one I still refer to. You'll not go wrong, trust me.

4 out of 5 stars Very thorough book - has all the info you need.......2000-06-19

I thought this was a good, thorough book that contained all the info you might need to know if you're considering moving to New Zealand.

      Book Description

Living by the Sword is the first critique of the Australian military experience from a Christian ethical perspective. It surveys attitudes toward war and warfare from ancient to modern times, considers the moral status of the nation-state and international sovereignty, asks whether the just war tradition was relevant to campaigns against Iraq, assesses the recent emphasis on collective security, and suggests some difficulties associated with recognizing conscientious objection. As intra-state conflicts increase, this book considers when and where humanitarian intervention is justified and whether the creation of "international constabulary" might avoid the need for pre-emptive military strikes.

RV In NZ: How To Spend Your Winters Freedom Camping South-Way South In New Zealand by Carolyn Harris (a veteran of touring New Zealand in winter mootorcarvans) is the definitive guide for anyone wanting to explore the beauty and excitement of a New Zealand excursion. Readers are definitively provided with solid information and invaluable advice on everything from buying a motorcaravan and getting the motorcarvan on the road, to finding free and/or low cost parking as well as meeting and traveling with New Zealand "movaners". If you are planning a trip to New Zealand and want to explore that wonderful country first hand -- then give a careful reading to Carolyn Harris' RV In NZ!

5 out of 5 stars Helpful guide to a wonderful way to spend my summer.......2004-08-07

I found this guide full of interesting places to visit, sparking my interest and desire to see more of the world. I would love to discover the same type of pleasure that one would get from being immersed in a different culture, especially one as appealing as the one painted in RV in NZ.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of info, fun read even for armchair travelers.......2004-06-30

I have to admit, I had not thought about RV'ing through New Zealand. A friend once invited us to Australia and he and his wife actually do this RV thing in the States: they buy a motorhome, travel around the US (they are missionaries on furlough) then sell it and return back to Australia. Here, Carolyn Harris tells you how to purchase an RV and how to survive the North and South Islands of this beautiful country.

The book actually assumes you know a bit about RV's--there is terminology and technical discussion that someone who already toured in an RV might be more familiar with. Carolyn advises you on motor memberships (AAA and KOA), money, dealing with the Kiwis, where to go, what to eat and even, how to talk--there is a glossary of Kiwisms in the back of the book.

I enjoyed reading the glossary as much as the book and was interested in how a country so remote can be so like us and so unlike us in every way. If you are considering an extended stay in an RV down in the Roaring Forties (fortieth parallel south and beyond) this book is a worthy guide.

5 out of 5 stars Witty and informative.......2004-06-24

I found this travel book extremely informative. As an aspiring trans continental RV traveler, I have always dreamt of one day exploring New Zealand. I have traveled all across North and South America, and after reading this woman's humorous details of discovering the Kiwi lifestyle, I am confident New Zealand will be my next destination.

      5 out of 5 stars Fun Read.......2004-06-08

It's my dream to have a holiday in NZ. This humerus discription of the adventures of the motorcaravan experience makes me want to go even more! A fun read for the traveler and nontraveler alike.

2 out of 5 stars Not my top pick.......2006-01-19

I purchased this book hoping that I would discover a more personal perspective regarding emigrating to New Zealand. The beginning of the book did touch on the reasons why Paul and his family left the UK which was of interest. However, I wanted more details about the whole process of emigrating such as the NZIS application process, actual packing of belongings which entails deciding what one should take and what one should leave behind, etc.

I also found that there was little detail in his experience with the education system. While I was thrilled that his daughter was doing well, I wanted more details such as course of study, academic standards, homework details, etc...information that people like myself are craving when embarking on such a huge life change. In addition, when Paul's son had to go to the MD for his arm, I would have liked to read more about the New Zealand healthcare process...particularly since Paul and his family did not have permanent residency status at the time.

I would highly recommend this book if one is going over to start a business. The book is primarily geared toward that experience. But if you are planning on working for a corporation or the government, and want to know the details of living in NZ, this book will not help you.

I agree with the above reviewer regarding the lack of editing on this book. There are spelling and grammatical mistakes, which may not bother most, but will bother many.

3 out of 5 stars Very ordinary, but with some useful tips.......2005-01-15

Paul Goddard and family picked up and moved from the UK to New Zealand to start a new life, slow down, and find a better place for their children to grow up. While in the process of emigrating, they became a feature family on the BBC TV Series 'Get a New Life', which followed them through the ups and downs of moving to a foreign country, dealing with homesickness and financial hardship, and having to make new friends and adjust to a new culture. Paul then wrote this book as a follow up to the series, to tell people in his own words what it was really like to emigrate, and to give people the sort of information you can't get by doing research and looking at facts and figures.

In theory, this all sounds like a wonderful idea, which is why it's a pity that this book falls flat very early on. I picked it up at the library, not so much because I was considering moving to New Zealand (although occasionally I think about it), but because I'm travelling there in a month and I wanted the perspective of someone who'd lived there but who wasn't necessarily a native New Zealander. I was specifically trying to avoid 'tips for tourists' type information, because there's a wealth of that already, and I know a lot from my parents and friends who have travelled the country extensively. So bearing this in mind, I never expected this to be a 'useful' book in that sense.

I suppose the earliest chapter or so was the most interesting: the reasons why they were attracted to New Zealand in the first place; how they decided on where to settle; their first impressions of the culture; and how they responded to the challenges of being in a new country. After that both the quality of the writing and the level of interest wanes, and Paul talks almost entirely about his struggle to get his business off the ground and make ends meet (he buys a Car Care franchise, and later tries to set up a rehearsal studio for local bands). While this is probably useful to those who try to start similar businesses, the book becomes less about trying to start a new life in a different country, and instead heads down the path of a 50-page whine about the fact that no one is signing up for the services he offers and that money is tight. It seems like a dozen or more times that he writes something along the lines of: 'I kept thinking it wasn't worth it and we should just give up and go back to the UK'. The point is well made; in fact, he beats the reader mercilessly with it, over and over again.

One thing that I would have found interesting would have been some discussion about his experience or understanding of Maori culture after having lived in New Zealand for a year. Yet he barely even mentions New Zealand's Indigenous population, and instead dismisses it by saying that he hasn't 'had any time to look into it'. I find this surprising given that he moves to Tauranga and takes a couple of jobs in Rotorua, both of which are small cities in the Bay of Plenty, an area with a huge concentration of Maori people. The influence of Maori culture is just about inescapable in much of New Zealand, but especially here. He even visits the Te Papa museum in Wellington and, instead of talking about anything to do with Maori history or culture (one of the museum's primary areas of focus), he talks about earthquakes. Apparently the most amazing thing about the museum to him is that it's free.

For such a short book (120 pages), I really think that only about half of what he says would be of any interest to someone wanting to either emigrate or travel to New Zealand. There are some useful tips, such as knowing the relative cost of living, a bit about crime rates, politics, road rules, and the Kiwi sense of humour, but ultimately it's a dry read. I read it in one sitting, mostly because there's little to engage with. He does list a considerable number of resources and organisations that one might find helpful, though.

The final point I have to make is that the book really could have done with a good editor. Many readers, of course, will neither notice nor care about grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, but if you're a stickler like me, you'll identify with the frustration of seeing apostrophes where they shouldn't be, dashes and commas in the wrong place and misspelt words ('addmission' and 'Antartic' are the two that spring to mind!) Yes, we see this sort of shoddy writing all the time in everyday life, but it really isn't acceptable in the publishing world.

Bottom line: If you're seeking to move to New Zealand, there may be some useful hints to be found here, but perhaps try to borrow rather than buy. If you're going for a holiday and want to read about the country in something other than a guidebook, I'd give this one a miss (although you may like Kate Llewellyn's 'Lilies, Feathers & Frangipani', for an altogether more insightful and better-written exploration of New Zealand).
