5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need!.......2007-09-09

No matter what size or variation of the Irish Chain you're hoping to make, this book has all the instructions and lots of beautiful inspirational quilts.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent method book.......2006-03-27

I am a longtime quilter and have a VAST library of quilting books, some I bought just to look at the pictures. (You other quilters know what I mean.) But this book is one I come back to time after time. It is well thought out, logical in presentation, gives the quilt maker a variety of sizes of blocks to choose from and a variety of sizes to make. It is a must have for any beginner. I bet I've made at least 10 single and double irish chain quilts just using this book. I have taught classes using this book and recommended it to my students to purchase. It is the one book in my library I'll never be sorry I bought.

4 out of 5 stars Time for a Chain: The Irish Chain Updated.......2006-02-25

I love this quilt pattern. The end results look like it was difficult to do. This is the first quilt I ever made and it turned out great. I did a king size single chain. The pressing instructions make this go together easy. If you can straight line stitch, and know how to assemble a quilt you can do this. I had instruction on how to assemble and "quilt" mine. I plan to make more quilts with this pattern and already have the material for my next, a triple chain king size.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Basic Book.......2005-09-28

This is one of my all-time favorite quilt manuals. It provides detailed purchasing and cutting instructions for single, double, and triple Irish Chain quilt styles in three block sizes and for three finished quilt sizes. You do need to know already how to construct a quilt. Pictures show basic Irish Chain quilts as well as variations. This is a must-have for fans of the Irish Chain pattern in an advanced beginner level.

3 out of 5 stars An incomplete book..........2003-12-04

I bought this book because I was desperately trying to find the single irish chain pattern. After reading VERY carefully, you can decipher the instructions as they are spread out throughout the book. While there are many photos of beautiful quilts in the book, the instructions do not tell you how to many ANY of them in particular. This book only tells you how to complete the quilt top and I feel that makes it incomplete as it should tell you how to complete the entire quilt (including batting, backing and binding). The only good thing was that it told you how to make the quilt top with 3 different size blocks. I ended up returning the book because I could not phathom making another quilt from this book's instructions.

Book Description

In recent years, mid-century modern furniture, glass, ceramics, and textiles have become hugely popular among those who appreciate the stylish contribution these pieces make to the contemporary home. Modern Retro will inspire you to create a look that combines modern classics by such visionaries as the Eameses, Bertoia, and Aalto with thrift-store finds and the best contemporary design. Created by modern classics dealer Andrew Weaving and design commentator Neil Bingham, with photography by Andrew Wood, Modern Retro is not about slavishly recreating a period feel. Instead, it shows how to take the best designs of the 1920s through 1970s and use them throughout your home in a relaxed and individual way, allowing you to make the most of the gloriously eclectic forms, colors, and patterns available.

3 out of 5 stars Inspiring and accessible.......2002-06-14

Since I already have a few 50-60's modern pieces in my home, I purchased this book to give me a better idea of what other items were out there. The designs have great style, but seem totally achievable. Using this book as a guide and source of inspiration you could decorate your home in a comfortable yet stylish manner. Some of the pieces they show are pricey, while others are probably inexpensive flea market finds. The author gives you enough information that you could go out into the flea markets and antique/second hand shops and make some sound purchase. It is a shame the book is less than 200 pages. I would have loved to see more.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive style without the costs!.......2001-12-30

This book is amazing. It teaches you to create a contemporary looking home, without the outrageous costs of designer furnishings. It tells you what to look for at thrift stores, and how to use what you already have. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone even just a little bit interested in design! It's truly great.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational book.......2000-11-15

For a book on home furnishings, this book certainly contains enough good pictures to get you inspired. It is also well researched and written and actually covers quite a lot of ground inspite of its rather small size at 144 pages. In fact, this book is so good, I only wish there was a bigger version of it, with even more wonderful examples of lovely interiors filled with retro furniture. This book covers interior styles from the Art Deco period to the 1970s. It does mention a little of the famous designers such as Noguchi, Eames, Nelson, etc., but its primary purpose is to teach you about how to achieve the modern retro look, with discussions on living rooms, kitchens, work rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, furniture, lighting and accessories. What I find particularly useful is the list of retailers specializing in original pieces of furniture, a list of retailers and manufacturers of modern re-issues, and a list of architects and designers whose work had been featured in the book. Be warned though, that the list consists mostly of companies in the United Kingdom. This book is definitely a good buy for enthusiasts of retro furniture.

    Book Description

Nothing can keep the 1950s housewife down—not dirt, not disappointment, not life! With a smile and a little elbow grease, she tackles the cranky husband after work, calms rowdy children with a snack, and erases that stubborn bathtub ring. Add the improvements of "modern" technology, and she's got time to do even more. Dancing across the floor, mop in hand and makeup in place, RETRO HOUSEWIFE is a tongue-in-cheek presentation of the role of the 1950s housewife. Vintage product advertisements trumpet the man as head of household and woman as keeper of the home, with special instructions for women on how to be an attentive wife, efficient homemaker, and supermom. Kitschy and fun, this look back at how far we've come makes a perfect gift for your favorite female phenomenon.

3 out of 5 stars Photos and descriptions & text don't always match.......2007-08-25

This is a cute coffee table book with reprints of ads from the late 1940's and 1950's.

The main thing that I found frustrating with this book is that the photos did not match the descriptions (or the text/narratives) ! I counted, and only 2 photos matched the descriptions even remotely.
I'm not sure why the author decided to write her book in this manner, but it was so frustrating ....for me.

So, if you are buying this book for the kitschy photos, then this book will delight. But when reading the text, you will have to use your imagination. Good luck.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the coffee table, but not for serious info.......2007-04-16

This book was fun to flip through. I love the colorful ads. And though I do not clean house in a dress and heals, I appreciate those days that seemed to encourage "clean" and "neat" now that we have a nation of slobs and packrats. Seriously. I get so grossed out when I go to other people's houses... it's like no one teaches hygeine and sanitation anymore.

I have two complaints about the book. One is that the ads never match the text on the page. I was reading thinking, "Now this text belongs with the ad on page..." It was like ads were just stuck in wherever there was room. Also, more text on the day-to-day housewifing would have been nice.

    Still, it's a fun-to-peruse book.

    5 out of 5 stars I Loved It!.......2007-01-01

There was a time when people lived like this. I know it's gone now, and I know we are supposed to be more 'with it.' And it should be mentioned that nowadays in this nation, it is almost impossible for a middle class family to get by on one salary.

But that doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with this period of time in history. It's just the way it was. The best thing about this are the fabulous, color-illustrations. The fifties advertisements had flair, boldness, and connoted happiness in everyday situations. Life moved at a slower pace and there was more 'one on one' interaction with family and friends. The advertisements mirrored that fact.

We are way past those times today. In fact the advertisements of today can't hold a candle to their predecessors; Everything has to be 'in your face shocking.' Unfortunately there is a supreme lack of imagination in today's advertisements, which make some of us look back fondly at a time when people treated each other better, were more considerate and yes, life was really in color.

5 out of 5 stars Fun coffee table book.......2006-06-20

This book was lots of fun! It is mostly a picture book, but there are descriptions and commentary as well mixed in. This book would be a fun wedding shower gift and would make a great coffee table book.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2005-05-26

Do you love clip-art!!! No? ok well then this is not the book for you. When I ordered this book I was hoping for some insight to the things that were being taught to the housewives, and future housewives in the 50's. Sadly this wasn't what was in the book, instead the whole thing consisted of old ads advertising everything from washers to steak and drawings from books of that era, along with a fact or statistic. For example page 72 shows drawings of 50's women in various outfits and reads "In 1957, supermarkets welcomed frozen pizza to thier inventory." The next page shows a drawing from an advertisment for an oven and the text reads, "Diner's club issued the first credit card in 1951 to 200 customers for use in 27 restaraunts. Card holders could only use the card for meal payments." And this goes on and on for a whopping 127 pages. I was hoping for some text from home economics books of the era, or magazine articles. Something a bit more meaty. The book doesn't deliver anything more than pictures and factoids...which in my mind fail to deliver on the "a salute to the suburban superwoman" promise. Oh well there's always Donna Reed re-runs!

With roots in prewar Germany, modernism leapt to popularity in postwar America. Advocated by architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius (who fled the encroaching Nazi movement and settled in the U.S.), modernism blended functionality with frugality. Between 1945 and 1960, architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and designers like George Nelson revolutionized the home landscape. Today, modernism is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Filled with incredible photographs of classic modern homes and beautifully spare rooms, Retro Modern is well researched and admirably demonstrates the intersection of history, society, and the arts.

The clean, cool lines of modern architecture was a direct rebuttal to the neoclassical styles that came before. Rooms flowed into one another and often included floor-to-ceiling glass walls to open the house to the natural world. "The new structures placed emphasis on efficiency and function, as well as informality and comfort," says author Lisa Skolnik. Inside, bold, spare furnishings like low-slung sofas and ovoid glass coffee tables were arranged with minimum clutter and often featured built-in furniture to keep the space open and airy. Clocks, lamps, and glassware took on asymmetrical and free-form shapes; most popularly, kidneys, amoebas, and boomerangs. That lime-green Egg chair of grandma's--which you thought hideous as a child--would now be snapped up in a second by a savvy collector.

A paean to midcentury America and Europe, a nod to designers and architects whose influence is still felt today, and an inspiration to aficionados, Retro Modern is as clear and streamlined as the movement it celebrates. --Dana Van Nest

5 out of 5 stars I love this book but be aware it's mostly pictures........2002-06-14

I picked this book up on a whim at a local book store, so I had an opportunity to look through it before buying. You should be aware that it's mostly pictures, with relatively little text aside from the captions. However, if what you want is a book of photos of Modern architecture and furniture, it's superb.

There is a seemingly endless series of photos showing various diverse interpretations of the Modern style, with excellent captions explaining the details of architecture, furniture, and decoration. It both looks at rooms as a whole and at details in specific, in separate sections of the book. The rooms shown are almost universally stylish and inspiring to the budding home decorator. The book shows furniture and design from throughout the Modern period, ranging from the 1920's through the 1970's, and also shows how Modern pieces can be blended smoothly with Contemporary designs of today.

As it is largely a photo book, I should comment that the paper and printing quality are excellent, with superb color, fine detail, and gorgeous glossy pages.

If you like the modern style and are looking for some inspiration on how to decorate your home, this is a wonderful book to have, and in my opinion [inexpensive] for its quality. If you're looking for a reference book with long discussions of the style and its influences, this is not the book you're looking for.

2 out of 5 stars Nice picture book, but really lacks documentation.......2002-05-27

I purchased this book thinking I could use it as a reference book for my Master's thesis paper on Art Nouveau's influence on the De Stijl and Bauhaus movements. I was wrong. This book contains a lot of really nice photos, but there is very little description about the photos. It even lacks identification of many of the subjects in the photos. If you're looking for a "pretty book" this is it, if you want an informative book look for Stephen Escritt's "Art Nouveau."

5 out of 5 stars Great photos and styling..........2001-06-01

Not much substance for anyone looking to use this as a reference (I recommend Taschen's series for this) but the layouts and photography are superb. There is a wide range of furniture and accessories illustrated with many of the "famous" designs being shown in quite interesting arrangements.

Definitely for the afficianado, this is something you flip through for inspiration when trying to decide how to reupholster that old Danish chair you found at a yard sale.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures, Poor Projects.......2003-06-02

The historical information and pictures of classic furniture are useful and can serve as some inspiration when putting together your own 50s look. The projects in the book, however, seem like a lot of work for not a lot result, time consuming, perhaps more expensive than an equivalent purchase, and in one instance (a wall hanging from a CD sleeve) downright tacky. There are way better books on this subject (see, Pad).

    2 out of 5 stars A dated little book.......2002-11-26

Giving a house today a 1950's look is a dated idea. The cool thing now is creating your own look. What isn't cool or very creative is just sort of buying a lot of 1950's things and attempting to create that look instead of mixing things up. What we and our friends are doing is mixing all styles. I mean, like, we're not the Jetsons. This is 2002. Almost 2003.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Ideas.......2000-08-28

This book has many helpful ideas about turning modern items into retro-looking pieces. A definite help if you're in the market for something and just can't find it you can do it yourself.

As we reach the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century, our passion for retro style shows no signs of fading. From the cerebral elegance of mid-century modern to the flamboyant opulence of the 1970s, retro interiors still have enormous appeal. In Living Retro, Andrew Weaving celebrates retro style in all its guises. It’s a multifaceted look embracing many different decorative styles, but it has at its heart a passion for vintage furniture and an understanding of the very best twentieth-century design. The interiors featured are varied in style, ranging from a slick, minimalist loft in London to an eclectic Parisian home full of found objects and a New York apartment that’s a cocktail of color and pattern. These diverse interiors all have one thing in common—they put their own unique spin on retro style. • A welcome successor to the highly acclaimed Modern Retro, also by Andrew Weaving, which has sold more than 70,000 copies. • Sumptuous photography by Andrew Wood.

            Book Description

Retro Home is a nostalgic look at 20th-century house style, taking you on a magic interior design trip. Starting in 1910 and ending in the 1990s, it's a decade-by-decade exploration of chic design style. Remember your parents' corner sofas and the patterned carpet? The oh-so-daring conversation pits and shag pile carpets? You will see all those and more in this unique sourcebook of retro design.

This is the first book to show you how to create the retro look. Each era features a guide to the trends of the times, followed by advice on re-creating the look. In addition, each chapter offers a glimpse into the homes of people whose authentic interiors encapsulate that era today.

Choose from the arty bohemia of the 1910s, the chic 20s of the flappers, the elegant Art Deco styles of the 30s and 40s, or the modernism of the 50s. Those who prefer a more modern look can choose between the dazzling Pop Art of the 60s, the penthouse cosmopolitan 70s, the Post-modern eclectic 80s, or 90s loft living. Whatever your style, there is a scheme for you among this revealing collection of stunning retro homes.
