            1 out of 5 stars tired.......2007-06-08

This book is old and tired. I'm very sorry I bought this and the Centennial book. I tested recipes for California Fresh over 20 years ago and they remain superior to this collection.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets for general use cook books........2002-03-21

I bought this a year ago for my wife for her birthday on the recommendation of a friend. It has proven to be one of the hest gifts I've given her in the 27 years we've been together.

The Junior Leagues individual chapters have published about a zillion individual chapter versions of their cookbook. This represents a sort of "best of" version.

            It's excellent for several reasons:

--It includes recopies from all regions of the country, giving it both a national as well as a regional flair.

--It contains more than four hundred recipes, ranging from classic dishes to contemporary fare that have never before been gathered into one volume.

--It includes many original essays on regional cooking and foodways which are both informative and entertaining.

--It provides dozens of sample menus that make planning and organizing meals a breeze.

--It's printed on sturdy, water resistant stock in a spiral binding making it a good choice for family cooking where the kid's are "helping" you with the meal.

Over the past year my wife has used this more than all her other cookbooks combined. She's enjoyed using it immensely--and I've enjoyed the fruits of her labor immensely.

For down home family cooking success, this is as good as it gets!

5 out of 5 stars AJLI has done it again...excellent job!.......2001-06-08

Once again Junior League has produced another fabulous cookbook. These cookbooks make such great hostess gifts!

            5 out of 5 stars A New Favorite!.......2001-05-05

This cookbook has rapidly become my new favorite! Every recipe I've tried has been outstanding. I highly recommend it.

Also included are descriptions of community programs sponsored by various local Junior Leagues. Funds from cookbook sales go toward supporting these important efforts.

            5 out of 5 stars Once Again.......2000-12-13

Once Again, a masterpiece has been created! For years, the best cookbooks have come from the Junior Leagues - so, what could be better than the "best of the best?" This is the second of AJLI's compilation cookbooks, hitting a home run a couple of years ago with the Centennial Cookbook and doing it again with this one - the Celebration Cookbook. They haven't been around for 100 years for nothin'!

            Book Description

From the organization that brought us The Black Family Reunion cookbooks comes The Historical Cookbook of the American Negro, a fun, richly brewed collection of recipes, historical facts, photos, and personal anecdotes. First published in 1958 by the National Council of Negro Women, it includes contributions from members in thirty-six states plus the District of Columbia and offers exceptional insight into American history and the African-American community at the time of its publication. As John Hope Franklin (whose own family owns a copy of the book) points out, much of the cultural information in the cookbook has never been passed down to successive generations. Arranged according to the calendar year, the cookbook opens with a cake to be baked in celebration of both New Year's Day and the Emancipation Proclamation. Scattered among the recipes one finds excerpts from documents such as the Gettysburg Address and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Tributes to well-known figures like Harriet Tubman, Phillis Wheatley, and Booker T. Washington appear alongside brief bios and recipes in celebration of important but obscured figures. This delightful collection of delicious recipes helps us commemorate African-American history throughout the year.

            5 out of 5 stars Historical Jewel.......2005-10-22

I love this book for the history and recipe authenticity. To capture the true flavor, sometimes you need to start with an original recipe and modernize to one's tastes rather than work with some of the neo-soulfood recipes.

Some of these recipes are from the 1800s. What a treasure!

            4 out of 5 stars A cookbook worth having.......2001-08-21

It's not so much for the recipes that I am buying this cookbook. There are some fabulous recipes in here - the waterwhip pie crust, corn pancakes, glorified shrimp- but many of the preparations are not to modern taste or use ingredients that are dated (suet, lard, palm oil). No, the fascinating part of this little treasure is the history that binds it together. Not only is it snapshot of the 1950's, with its aspics and community suppers, and surprising reliance on convenience products of the time, but the African American history it preserves is precious in its own right. The pages on Robert Smalls alone are worth owning this book. The index needs work and the user guide recipe updates for modern use should have been included at the end of every recipe instead of burying them in a chapter at the back of the book, but after reading thru this once as a novel, I am ready to use it as an actual cookbook. But as a record of Black history thru the year, it is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic, exotic, and a welcome resource.......2001-03-03

The Historical Cookbook Of The American Negro was originally published in 1958 as a community cookbook. A memorable compendium of recipes, facts, bios, documents, illustrations, documents, and anecdotes tracing the lost history of the African-American community and culture, Beacon Press has reissued this American culinary classic with all 132 mouth watering recipes which pay special tribute to African-American pioneers. From Emancipation Proclamation Breakfast Cake, Sliced Potato Pie, and A Nut Cake to Israel, to New England Suet Pudding, Brussel Sprouts with Paprika Sour Cream, and Yam Pork Chop Skillet, The Historical Cookbook Of The American Negro is nostalgic, exotic, and a welcome resource for any contemporary meal planner menu.

            2 out of 5 stars Missing Flavor.......2007-04-04

I made a few dishes for passover, a lot of the recipes are missing flavor. Some recipes do not have clear instructions, Roasted Chicken has instructions to bake instead of roasting. I am Jewish and my grandma's dishes are way better then Grandma Doralee's dishes, except my grandma cannot seem to give me recipes because she does not measure anything, so every time I follow her directions, the dish turns into a mess. I also did not like that 12 pages of the book are reviews and praises from other people. The book is small as it is, I don't need to spend money on praises. I would not recommend this book. I have to say one thing, her chicken soup is good, but how can you mess that up.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best!.......2005-05-29

Doralee Patinkin's cookbooks are two of my all-time favorites (and I'm not Jewish, so they should appeal to everyone with taste buds). Every recipe I've tried has been absolutely wonderful. Directions are clear, and each recipe is preceded by a brief description of why it is a favorite. The forward is by actor Mandy Patinkin, and the comments about some recipes include his passion for him. These books are very warmly written, and filled with tried-and-true family favorites which will be just as successful in the readers's homes. Absolutely wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars More than one reason to own a cookbook..........2000-06-23

I tend to collect cookbooks that are fun to read, have interesting graphics, and have recipes that don't require days to prepare. This book is one of them. In addition, in the introduction, Mandy Patinkin (the author's son) writes: "Please try some of my ma's holiday treats and share some of my memories." Who could resist? Not me!

            Book Description

Modern furniture, with its clean lines and pure shapes, has its own cachet. Dating from the 1920s to the mid-1960s, it represents several stages and sources of development: Marcel Breuer, who created tubular steel for chairs, tables, stools, and sofas in the 1920s; Gilbert Rhode and Russel Wright, who designed maple and birch furniture with sweeping, aerodynamic lines for Heywood-Wakefield in the 1930s; Bruno Mathsson and Alvar Aalto, who used blond birch plywood and heat-molding techniques to produce graceful furniture in the late 1930s; and architects and industrial designers who made goods with molded plastics, laminates, aluminum, and stainless-steel after World War II. By profiling the interiors of 14 homeowners, New Classic Style shows how to mix these pieces with traditional furnishings. Strategies include combining shapes to achieve harmony, using color to unify diverse furnishings, and contrasting the old and new. The results are dramatic, exciting, and comfortable. The book also explains key furniture shapes and important figures from each period in design history.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book for novice decorators........2004-08-21

This is a great book if you are looking for new ideas for your home and you don't want to spend a fortune. Also a great book if you want to NOT do what everyone else is doing!

5 out of 5 stars An exciting book.......2003-03-20

I can't think when a new decorating book excited me as much as this one. I buy a lot of decorating books, but New Classic Style is so chic yet so helpful all at the same time. The premise, which is carried out stylishly by the photos, involves mixing classic furnishings from all eras and genres to create "personal" style. The book is so what I'm all about and what I see my friends doing. I've never seen a book on how to create your own mix before.
