Book Description
Color has always played an important role in interior design, from the earth-toned halls of ancient Cretan palaces to the bright surfaces of modern homes. Yet most people are largely unaware of the way in which color affects their surroundings. In this comprehensive introduction, readers discover the impact that color has on the way they see the world and learn how to effectively use color to beautify their environment.
With a wealth of information and images, the book is divided into three parts: a history of interiors from the perspective of color systems, an easy-to-understand outline of color theory and its underlying science, and a practical guide to using color to enhance interior settings and create specific effects. From James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room in Washington D.C., to Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye in provincial France, to a Prairie-style interior by Frank Lloyd Wright, Ethel Rompilla shows how color creates the world in which we live. This lavishly illustrated volume is an indispensable and accessible guide for the professional and amateur decorator alike. AUTHOR BIO: Ethel Rompilla is a professor of color theory at the New York School of Interior Design in Manhattan, as well as a highly regarded interior designer. She lives in New York City. The New York School of Interior Design is an accredited school of interior design offering programs leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees in interior design. The school is located in New York City.

Very nice, but more of a textbook........2007-10-01
This book has some lovely interiors and color combination ideas, but it's more of a textbook and has many pages devoted to color spectrum charts and the science of color. I read about it in a well-known home decorating magazine which described it as one of the best books for decorating with color, but I really found it a little too technical. If you are a design student, it would probably be more appropriate.
A good beginner's handbook.......2006-04-04
This book is good for those who have limited background in color theory and want a concise history of color. Most of the book discusses color from cave to modern and contemporary periods culminating with applications to decorating. The color plates are good examples of the content being presented. Certainly a good handbook for a beginner.
Book Description
With almost 200,000 copies sold, The Color Book has proven itself the must-have color manual for the home decorator. Now completely revised and updated, and featuring all-new colors in fresh and contemporary palettes, this new edition invigorates the best-selling classic. Professional designers and decorators know what effect a change in color will have, but for many of us, choosing paint still feels like a bit of a gamble. We may love that deep rose color on the paint chip, but what will it actually look like on the wall, against oak flooring and a cream ceiling? With The New Color Book, anyone can instantly see what colors will work, and what colors won't. Ninety-six pages, each cut horizontally into three sections -- floor, walls, and ceiling -- can be flipped separately to instantly mix-and-match a vast array of colors. Covering the bathroom, bedroom, living room, and kitchen, The New Color Book visually demonstrates 45,000 different color combinations, offering near endless inspiration and tangible assistance in selecting the perfect color scheme for every room. The accompanying text presents an accessible guide to choosing and mixing colors, while a color key and practical directory offer additional resources. Decorators will like using the unique mix-and-match method to help clients make smart choices, while the do-it-yourself crowd can use it to identify the best color combinations for every room, without resorting to the expense and frustration of trial and error.

Interesting to flip through, but not very useful.......2007-03-09
This is a fun book. Kind of like the flip books where you make funny cartoon characters. But this is colors for walls, ceilings, and floors.
It's neat to see how different a room (same furniture) looks with pink walls and yellow ceiling as opposed to blue walls, green ceiling.
But while it's kind of neat to play with, I don't see how it is very useful. There are sections for living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Each section has two different rooms - one more country-style decorated, the other a little more modern.
The furniture pieces in the living rooms and bedrooms are very neutral. Both bedrooms and both living rooms however feature light colored furniture, I would have prefered one option to show darker woods since that is mainly what I have in my house.
The floor color choices are not that great either. Not enough neutrals for the floor choices, since most people would be working with what they already have on the floor, and using this mainly to choose a wall color.
One of the bathrooms features a grayish-green counter and tilework. One kitchen has white cabinets, one kitchen has yellow cabinets. Those colors really affect how you see the other colors in the room. Great if you have that color already in your house and are trying to work around it, but not so great if you are trying to actually choose colors for your house.
So if you can get a used copy for not much, it is fun to look through. Not worth full price, unless you have a houseful of very light colored furniture or are completely starting from scratch.
Not Wha I Expected.......2005-09-19
This book may be good for looking at changing your paint color, but was not helpful in picking out a new color pallet for a newly constructed home.
How color affects space and existing conditions!.......2005-05-14
I love how this book shows how different colors can change a layout without having to change major items (i.e. your furniture). They say paint is the cheapest way to change a room and this book shows how. It definantely pays for itself, trust me. I had a darker colored room and flipped through this book and saw all the possibilities for making it a warmer more spacious place. I chose an orange-peach color (close to one of the colors I saw in the book) and I got a whole new room! It feels much more like home. I'm so glad I found this book, otherwise I may have never been bold enough to paint it that color. Excellent buy, well worth the price, it's a steal!!!
Boring.......2005-03-01
I really expected more versatility out of this book with the title. I suggest reviewing it in person before purchase, to see if this is what you're looking for. The color combinations I found to be very muted.

Love this book! .......2007-09-26
I highly recommend this book! This is by far one of the best decorating books that I have purchased. Lots of iedeas in many decorating styles, all done with class.
It's the same as the 2003 book, with newlywed pages added.......2007-04-22
There are 72 pages added at the front, aimed for newlyweds, with chapters such as "your first home", "your first living room", etc. Then you will find the 432 pages from the BHG New Decorating Book copyrighted in 2003, which was and still is a nice book. But, if you already own the 2003 book, you probably wouldn't need to buy this "newlywed" New Decorating Book.
Not Much New.......2006-11-07
I bought this for my wife. She thinks that the pictures reflect decor that is a bit dated.
Dreadful...Outdated design even for 10 years ago..........2006-06-14
The interior design featured in this book was absolutely horrid. Even though this book is almost 10 years old I find it hard to beleive that garish clashing floral prints and variations of plaid were all the rage in 1997. Judging by the quality of BHG's magazines I expected so much more. Thank goodness I got it used for $1.59...
Inspiring and informative.......2006-05-18
The pictures alone are beautiful and inspriring. You can get so many ideas just from looking at them. Add the text and you have a book full of ideas, advice and suggestions for all styles. It even inlcudes organization tips. I will definitely refer to this often. It's hard to find a book that has both excellent info and pictures - this one's got it all!
Book Description
This remarkably moving picture book follows first-grader Hassan through his first few days at school. Hassan has only recently arrived in the United States after he and his family were forced to flee Somalia, and he deeply misses the colorful landscape of his former home in Africa. But with the help of his parents, an understanding teacher, and a school art project, Hassan finds that by painting a picture of his old home and sharing his story, his homesickness and the trauma of leaving a war-torn country are lessened. And he finds that there are many things to like about his new home in America. The colorful, impressionistic illustrations are a perfect complement to the wonderful text by Mary Hoffman, author of the highly acclaimed Amazing Grace. Together art and text make this poignant story accessible and affecting for a young audience.

Crimson, gold, and lavender.......2005-01-24
When I lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota I found that the community included a large Somalian population. Intrigued by this I tried to seek out children's books that spoke about the Somalian experience and that would be useful to our library collection. I guess I wasn't too shocked to find that there wasn't an abundance of books on the subject, but I was a bit disappointed. Then, in the course of my work, I heard about Mary Hoffman's, "The Color of Home". A beautiful picture book written by the author of the supremely popular, "Amazing Grace", I was both relieved and delighted to find the story exactly what I was hoping for. Better still, "The Color of Home" speaks to any child that has ever left a violent country and moved to America. Combining the slow acceptance of the new and different with an understanding of how talking about things can be therapeutic, this is one of those rare deeply moving picture books.
Hassan is unhappy. Having left bright colorful warm Somalia for cold colorless unfamiliar America depresses him. Though his teacher and fellow students are nice enough, Hassan has to deal with language differences and his own personal history. One day, his teacher asks him to draw a picture. He does, but fills it with the images of the blood and violence he left behind. Through the intervention of a friendly translator and talking about what he's been through, Hassan starts to feel a little better about his experiences. Slowly, he learns to adjust.
Yeah. It's a tearjerker. Mary Hoffman, aided by illustrator Karin Littlewood, kinda goes for your throat with this one. The moment it really got me was when Hassan talks about having to leave his cat behind. You see him, one moment, crouching under the bed as the boots of a soldier pass by, his hand clasping the cat to his chest in fear. The next he's leaving, reaching for the cat that's standing all alone while the family leaves. But this is not to say that the story panders with cheap emotions. If nothing else, Hoffman is entirely respectful of her subject. It's true that the book ends on a happier note. The family is now filling their house with color and Hassan is learning some new words and feeling better about everything. But it's obviously not a perfect situation. Just a better one.
The illustrations are lovely as well. Using broad watercolors, Littlewood draws realistic characters with bright cheerful colors. She's also rather good at drawing Hassan's personal paintings. They're childlike but also, at times, horrific. Combined with Hoffman's words, this book, as I said before, speaks to all kinds of children. Not just the one's escaping from brutality. It doesn't matter what your child's situation is. "The Color of Home" is one of those books that should be read to them so as to open their eyes to the world around them. It's a book that should be better known.

Sheila!.......2006-09-27
I am very touched by the events that the author of this book had to share. She is indeed a very strong person. The average person could not survive the various pitfalls and bouts of discouragement that she had to suffer. She was placed in foster care at very young age. Although she felt bitter, she later discovered that it was better then being with her real mother. This young lady searched and found her mother, by way of the grapevine network within the black community. To her disappointment she did not find a loving mother. She found a discouraging woman living in confusion and poverty.
This was not the stopping point for the young lady in the book. She pushed herself. She even worked and saved her money. With the help of a kind social worker, she was able to go to college. I'm so proud of her.
The foster care system, is often one void of real love. As a parent and one who loves children, I take the care of children personally. Any child placed in my home for whatever reason is my child. I feel like it's up to me to love and protect that child. The elements of life are harsh enough. Children have day to day challanges just like adults. Foster parents your young charges need you. You are their guardians. LOVE THEM, PROTECT THEM, TREAT THEM LIKE YOUR OWN CHILDREN.
I was a bit surprised to find out how racially bias Buffalo, New York was. But the wonderful, wonderful thing is the good and positive life that the writer of this book is reaping. Hats Off to her. Keep On Pushing!
Understanding ALL the options.......2003-04-22
Theresa Cameron's difficult odyssey began when her biological mother did not make decisions with her daughter's best interests in mind. As difficult as it might have been for the mother to admit that adoption was the best route for her to follow, she simply abandoned a beautiful child and left her at the mercy of an inadequate system. As strong as Ms Cameron obviously is, as an unwilling participant in the foster care system, her childhood was unnecessarily harsh and often cruel. Rarely can we says such a story has meaning in all our lives. I recommend this book for all who face the irreversible decision of creating a child.
Must reading for foster care workers.......2003-04-05
This book reveals the emotional impact of life in the foster care system for a black girl who was bounced from one foster home to another from birth until the age of 18. Except for the nationally publicized case of Baby Jessica, who was forcibly removed from her adoptive family at the age of two to be reunited with her birth mother and father, it is rare that the public gets a glimpse of the emotional damage done to the child. This book should be MUST reading for everyone involved in foster care.
Foster Care Revealed.......2002-09-03
This is a heartfelt, painfully true story of how one child can be forgotten in the "system". Even the cover itself is revealing...the only photograph the author has from her childhood and it does not even show her face.
By far my favorite book of alltime. I recommend it to all socialworkers, teachers, counselors, mothers, fathers, ministers, politicians, EVERYONE! It is well-written and easy to read, although it caused me to lose sleep at night knowing children are out there--alone, forgotten by their caseworkers, and lacking the basic needs such as touch, hugs, encouragement, or even a smile from those whose care they are in.
How Ms.Cameron did what she did all alone is beyond me. She is simply amazing.
After reading this book I wanted to reach out and hug Ms. Cameron.
She has made me a better mother.

Great decor book.......2002-04-29
I love the décor in this the book. The rooms shown here tend to have clean and modern lines yet they are richly and elegantly decorated, rather than flowery, rustic or cluttered.
The book is arranged by color and includes a chapter for each of the primary and secondary colors as well as chapters on pastel and neutral color schemes. Each section first gives background information on the color including its characteristics. It then shows 5-6 example rooms with swatches of the colors used. There are designers' comments on the colors as well which I really enjoyed reading.
It was really nice to see rooms that use purple as their primary color. I personally love purple and it is such rarity to see it used well, without being overpowering. Though not a big fan of orange in past, seeing some of the rooms using it here has inspired me to take a second look at using it in my home. I found the chapter on setting mood with color to be very helpful.
It's great that a directory of designers and photographers is included as well. If you love color and want to see it expertly used this is the book for you.

Book Description
Color -- perhaps no other aspect of interior decorating is as exciting, affordable, expressive, or rewarding. Or intimidating. How many of us ever follow our impulse to paint the dining room bright blue, or to slipcover the sofa in a boldly patterned print?
This new volume from the editors of House Beautiful is filled with enough information, advice, and examples from designers, architects, and homeowners to inspire just thc right degree of decorating confidence.
The first step is understanding what color is and how it can be incorporated in every scheme, large and small, for every room of the house. More than 140 beautiful color photographs, profiling homes throughout the country, illustrate the full spectrum, from saturated jewel tones and the lovely pastel tints that can be derived from them, to the soft and soothing tones that take their cue from nature. The dramatic pairings of lights and darks that have become design classics are explored, as well as rooms done entirely in tones of white.
The second part of the book is devoted to ideas for using these colors and color combinations -- painted surfaces, fabrics, and those all-important finishing touches that truly bring a room to life, from pillows to lamps to personal collections.
House Beautiful Color will surely make you think and feel differently about color. It's a subject that never has to be daunting again.
