Not just for Boy Scout merit badges!.......2001-08-22
I never thought you could create so many attractive designs with a piece of string and variations on a single knot. Hensel has created an easy-to-follow guide to creating knotwork wall hangings and other artwork using nothing but rope, ingenuity, and a bit of patience.
Although some of the designs in the book are a bit dated (I honestly don't know anyone who would wear the tie-clip or women's jewelry featured in the book), the techniques are useful and easily mastered.
A terrific book for those looking for a new hobby.

Ev'rthg you wanted to know 'bout knots but afraid to ask!.......1998-05-28
One of the best. The hand drawn illustrations are classic. They clearly show how to tie the knot, somtimes more than one way to tie the knot is shown. The Japanese and oriental knots are unusual also. Most books on knots written at that time did not include them. Well worth the wait if you can even obtain it.
Book Description
Paul's life was never dull. First appearing in the New Testament as a violent enemy of Christ, Paul later went on to not only put his faith in the risen Lord but to pen thirteen letters of the New Testament--in the midst of being beaten, shipwrecked, snakebitten, imprisoned, and chased out of town. Let Charles Swindoll be your guide as you travel down the road to Damascus with Paul and discover the passion for Jesus that drove this hero of the faith.

Paul: A Man of Grit and Grace.......2007-02-16
Charles Swindoll, gives an exellent expose' of the man Saul of Tarsus. His conversion and the affect it had on him, that lasted for the rest of his life. The continual conflicts, trials, and troubles he endured.
Swindoll, also does a great job of filling in between the lines, from other text, and how we can learn from the examples of Pauls great, faith, strength and courage.
A Thoughtful Presentation of Paul .......2006-08-25
Chuck Swindoll is one of my favorite writers, though I am not in agreement with all of his theology. But this work on Paul is outstanding.
Before reading this work on Paul, I had read several other volumes on Paul, and Swindoll gave me another perspective on Paul that I have greatly appreciated--the devotional touch to this work. As a pastor, I find this work to be encouraging. Swindoll writes with a pastor's pen. And I love that.
I especially recommend this work to all conscientious pastors.
Yo, Dear consumer, Fellow.......2005-02-05
oh yeah, this book is wonderfull. Turned me into something like a Pauline. It gives great illustrations and its quite a good read; what I really got out of it was how Swindoll shows you a real person. Not just Paul the Apostle, not just him as one of the sons of judaism of that time, no beyond that. The man that we read about that filled his letters with so much understanding and knowledge, to be flesh. You read this book and I guarantee you, it will change how you look at him and Christ, and especially what kind of peoples Christ uses. from a man you read of in Acts through Philemon as a character into a man that struggled with his faith and had to take a shower at the end of the day just like all of us. Oh yes, it is really great, I encourage anyone to tear into this mug, and I hear its one of many books- so I really am encouraged to pick up one of Swindoll's other books. Hes a magnificent writer. 5 starsies all the way.
Paul: A Man of Grit and Grace.......2005-01-29
The author is probably a great guy personally, but his writing falls very short. The book does not even address Paul's views on the role of women, or on homosexuality--two areas where people of our times need guidance. It seems as if the author wanted to be "politically correct" and not offend anyone.
He doesn't even address, with any authority, the conflict between Paul and Barnabas over John Mark. He just basically says they should have worked it out. I was completely disappointed in the book.
Another Masterpiece by Swindoll!.......2004-07-08
Swindoll's book on the Apostle Paul is the 6th in a series of Bible characters and in my humble opinion, the best character study so far.
Among the important points Swindoll covers include:
1. Biblical examples of people who waited long period of time before being used greatly by God.
2. An independent spirit does not please God - He much prefers the humble and broken-hearted.
3. Exceptional work is preceded by extended waiting and 4 principles for trusting God while waiting in the shadows (this alone was worth the price of the book).
4. While boasting about our weakness is not popular in today's culture, life is about God, not us!
5. 3 perspectives to have when in a strong disagreement.
6. Sometimes turnmoil, hardship, and persecution means you are in the middle of God's will.
7. 4 excellent points to consider for powerful preaching.
8. Be careful of letting your subjective experiences be your ultimate guide in life - God's Word is much more reliable!
9. Effective ministry and opposition go hand in hand.
10. Patterns of behavior and observations about heroes who stand up while everyone sits down.
11. 4 anchors to hold on to during stormy times.
12. 7 exhortations for faithful service.
The points above are only a few of the many encouragements you will get from this gem of a book! Having read several of Swindoll's books, this one may be my personal favorite!
Read and be encouraged in the Lord and hang tough like the Apostle Paul did!
Highly recommended.
Book Description
How and why have women come to play a central role in the political project of Islamic revivalism and in the power struggles between Islamic and secular forces in Turkey? In this innovative book Ayse Saktanber rejects approaches to this issue that ask what Islam means for the position of women, or see Muslim women as the "reverse" or the "dark" side of modernity. Taking as her subject matter families who have come together to "live Islam" as "conscious Muslims" in a suburb of Ankara, she attempts instead to "render thinkable" the experiences of women who are not situated within the discourse of modernity, and to look at the ways in which they have become crucial agents in the effort to make Islam a living social practice in a secular order.

Book Description
Istanbul has been the capital of Roman emperors, Byzantine despots, and Turkish sultans. Stretching along both sides of the Bosporus from the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea, it occupies one of the most extraordinary geographical locations on earth. Vestiges of the diverse cultures that have flourished here-- Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman-- survive in modern Istanbul, where different quarters are still divided by what the Byzantine poet Procopius once called a 'garland of waters.'
In this superb volume, the authors reveal the unique lifestyle and hidden splendours of Istanbul, inciting us to discover an infinite variety of charming private homes, delicate wooden yalis, and magnificent palaces on the European and Asian shores of the Bosporus. These sumptuous dwellings-- whether modern or traditional, intimate or spectacular-- are imbued with the magic of the water and light, of copper and wood, and a sophisticated combination of Eastern and Western influences.
Plunging into the daily life of the bustling city, the exotic Covered Bazaar and celebrated Egyptian Market beckon, where, after sampling the delicious local products, tired visitors may pause for a refreshing glass of tea in a sidewalk café. In the hans-- former caravan depots which now serve as workshops for traditional craftsmen-- kilims, carpets, painted tiles, and other marvelous creations abound, and the sacred art of calligraphy is still practiced.
Stunning photographs by Jérôme Darblay, specially commissioned for this volume, unveil the secrets of this ancient city, while an extensive visitor's guide to hotels, restaurants, traditional shops, museums and other attractions provides information for the discriminating traveller to discover Istanbul's thousand-and-one delights.

Do not buy it from Amazon.com !.......2006-02-27
When i bought this item, estimated shipping time was 10-12 days. However, amazon changed the date several times at the date when they were supposed ship. They made me wait four months and at the end they've sent an e-mail saying that they can't obtain this item and they've cancelled my order. It was that easy for them ! Even now, despite that the book is unavailable, they listed the book as avaialbale in 2-3 weeks! Never buy this book from Amazon.com. I am planning to buy it from ecampus.com.
Even if just for the photos.......2005-07-02
Some of you may be looking for a book on this subject for more than good photos but I won't detail about the writing. I feel that the other review on this book has already done a good job on that. I just want to say it is a great book even if it is just for the photos. Very beautiful photographs - perfect for coffee tables, etc... I have visited Istanbul and the photos make me sick to visit again.
Not perfect but probably the best there is nowadays.......2000-06-18
For anyone under a spell of Istanbul, this is a book to have and behold. The photography is excellent if also typical of glossy coffee table books: romantised and beautiful, very - yet the images chosen cover a wide range and offer interesting and evocative - or inspiring, if you like - insights into the life in Istanbul and its settings. Visually, then, the book is a little gem (far better than another recent one, "Living in Turkey"). There are several essays included whichare of varying quality. The preface by an Ottoman princess is - on a second reading - not too bad and rather charming, while her attitude - both nostalgic and protective is as expected as, perhaps, it is befitting, too; a diary by a Turkish writer leaves one with mixed feelings and somewhat at loss as to what is at stake in it (in my opinion, it is the weakest of the essays in the book). "A Day in Istanbul" is rather matter of fact description of the city by and what there is to be seen. "Interiors" is probably what most people would expect to find in a book like this - after all, it leans heavily on interior decoration; the selection of interiors is, as expected, very biased: focusing on yalis or the more contemporary residences of the fashionable Istanbulites, Turkish or foreign - but then, most interior books do the same and this is not to say it is not pleasant to behold, only that at times the text seems little bit selfindulgent in terms of the people whose homes are shown - of course, as long as we don't know these people and their names mean nothing to us, it doesn't really matter, but I can imagine that people, say, in Istanbul might read and view the book rather differently... (also, it might be noted that the books is written by people who mostly reside someplace else than Istanbul). The only section where the text surpasses the pictures is the one about the palaces, or I felt so, as they don't really give you a sense of the buildings nor the interiors - it is a very personal selection and quite small one at that, too. The following section on "Traditions" saves much of the book anew: only, minor, drawback is that the relevant text and pictures don't manage to keep pace but are separated, at times afew pages apart. Finally, the "Rendezvous" is a pleasant, casual and intimate, retake on the city as to what to do and where to go, especially if you don't have a home in Istanbul and you have to experience the "living in Istanbul" through cafes, bars and restaurants. The last part, "Visitors guide" would have been best left out: not only does it start to turn the book - ambiguously and dissapointingly - into a guidebook, but it will also date it - no doubt, when first published, it was useful and it will be nostalgic in a hundred years' time, but in between it is bit of a letdown. Yet, in spite of its drawbacks, it still remains the best book I've found currently available on life and interiors in Istanbul. And some of my friends who know the city better than me, agree. I myself borrowed the book from a library, kept it for a month, extended it for another and then bought my own copy...

Right On the Mark.......2007-10-07
I was quite pleased with the information that was in Pat Yale's book. I moved to Turkey in 1990 and it would have been very helpful to have had it at that time. She covers all the bases. I highly recommend it to anyone considering living in Turkey. She had a very gentle way of stating the difficulties that lie in getting things done in Turkey that are very different from what we experience here in the US. I recommend it for those who know people living in Turkey. It will give you a very good picture of life there.

Customer Reviews:
not bad-not great.......2003-05-16
I like that I can read the words along with the CD, however there is more english speaking than Turkish. This is a short CD and I doubt that most people could learn more than Hello and a question or two while "in-flight". I should have spent my money on a more in-depth CD. One definatly needs to try to learn before departing and use more than this book/CD set.
Not a good learning tool.......2003-01-15
I put this away after 10 minutes and won't use it again. The English narration is too distracting and the Turkish phrases are spoken in a way that it's hard to retain them or develop your own pronunciation. The words and phrases presented are random and do not build on each other.
Audio courses in a language lab have a 'repeat' button so you can jump back repeatedly until your pronunciation matches the audio. A language cd like this one, which of course doesn't have this feature, should compensate with more repetition. And the repetition should not be intermixed with English so that the phrase you are learning remains in your mental ear. As it is, I did not find myself retaining anything from this audio course.
If there is a better cd audio course for Turkish out there, please let me know.
4 Stars for Comprehending the Spoken Language.......2001-11-29
This CD is very helpful if you're trying to learn to speak Turkish. However, by itself it simply isn't enough.
I learned to say some basic phrases by listening to the male and female speakers. Hello, Good-bye, Good Evening, Please, Thank You, It's Nice to Meet You, My Name is -- and I can count to 100 without too much cheating.
However, what I was doing was simply memorizing and repeating phrases I'd heard -- trying to say them as much like the people on the CD were saying them, without any comprehension of the language structure.
In short, this CD alone will NOT teach you to speak or understand Turkish. Consider it a supplement to other books (see my other review of Elementary Turkish).
The sounds of this beautiful language are ones we English speakers don't often hear, ones we'll find difficult to emulate. It is complex, but not impossible (you'll need to learn to say "Please speak slowly!" or "Please repeat that!"
To understand the language you'll need to listen to someone speaking Turkish, slowly and repeatedly. This CD gives you that, clearly, repetitively and quite slowly.
Get this CD along with whatever elementary language book you choose, and you'll be a step closer to understanding and speaking Turkish.

Book Description
The fourth century was pivotal in the evolution of the feasts and fasts of late antique Christian communities. While earlier scholars have focused on developments in Jerusalem, Rome, and the Gallican West, the liturgical year in Cappadocia remains largely uncharted territory. Aspects of the Litturgical Year in Cappadocia 325 to 430 fills that gap, relying primarily on the liturgical year homilies of the Cappadocian Fathers in order to provide for the first time a comprehensive study of liturgical calendars from Cappadocia and environs during the period between the Councils of Nicaea and Ephesus. This volume is a valuable resource for students of liturgical time, the Cappadocians, and fourth-century doctrinal controversies.
