Natural Dyeing for the Chemically Inclined.......2007-04-10
This book is geared more toward precise recipes and reproducibility. It does not discuss the growing of dye plants, but is aimed at those using purchased dyestuffs. The recipes are organized by color instead of by plant, with some interesting discussion of historical colors (the author is involved in historical reenactments). A few color plates are relegated to the middle of the book. Getting an idea of the finished product for a given recipe required a lot of hunting around and digging through captions. I did appreciate the historical and biochemical information given for many of the plant dyes, though. Although this book was less enjoyable to leaf through than other natural dyeing books, it seems very well-researched and practical.
astonishing work.......2000-08-21
This is one of the most amazing books I have ever come across. The amount of information on this all but forgotton craft is astonishing, and a tribute to the dogged diligence of the author. As to the dye recipes, every color of the rainbow is brought forth - and the concoctions made solely from nature for producing them - including information on dyeing hard to dye cottons and linens. An amazing guide from this master of natural dyeing.
Best Ever Book on Natural Dyeing!.......1999-12-20
I have read all the current and out-of-print books on natural dyeing that are available, and I have tried a large number of the "recipes". This is the only book I would recommend. The information is factual, as opposed to annecdotal--a fault most of the others suffer from--and you actually get the colours given, if you follow the steps accurately. It is definitely the best book if you are interested in the classic natural dyes, such as indigo and madder, and it is the only one I have found that gives you a good procedure for Turkey Red! If you use this book, you won't need any others (although they are fun to read!).
The DISSERTATION on Natural Dyeing.... whew!.......1999-08-03
Although packed with a vast amount of information on natural dye history and formulas, this book reads like a dissertation. It's lengthy and exacting on all accounts. If preparing and using natural dyes sounds like something "fun" to do, this book may just leach all the excitement right out of you.
The ULTIMATE reference book for the Serious Natural Dyer.......1998-06-17
This book is a must for anyone studying the history and techniques of natural dyeing. I study as well as teach techniques for historical dyes and this is the only reference that helped me with difficult questions. For example, Liles covers how the roots of the Madder plant can dye orange, red, or brown depending on the temperature of the dye bath, which he provides in great detail. I could never have consistently achiedved that red red without it. Liles give an excellent overview of the evolution of natural dyes from ancient times to modern day. He inludes excellent tables for chemical names, and his advise on disposal of chemicals is excellent and very much appreciated. Liles thoroughly explains the nature of dyes on various fibers and his recipies are fiber specific, although because the recipies are chaptered by color/fiber you sometimes have to look in several different sections to find out everything you may want to know about a specific dye. For natural dyers in the Society for Creative Anachronism and other historical research groups, this book is a must.

Book Description
More than ever, the currents of consumerism are generating a clear tendency to convert natural, daily activities into authentic rituals -- a phenomenon illuminated by the innovative interior designs of today's bars and restaurants. Whether classical or modern, experimental or traditional, today's architects are faced with the same challenging task of creating new dining spaces that satisfy the public's revitalized hunger for entertainment.
New Bars & Restaurants takes us on a trip around the world, exploring the newest dining spaces in countries that range from France to Australia. What ties all of these projects together, however, is their original solutions to the venerable problem of dining design. An imaginative lighting system and the symbolic use of color, for example, are just two of the many design solutions that uncover universes of fantasy in a space where the focus is usually placed on the kitchen. With its detailed design comments and more than 500 full-color photographs,
New Bars & Restaurants will serve as an indispensable resource for the storeowner and architect alike.

An enticing armchair tour.......2003-10-16
Readers whose idea of a French café is (like mine was) little more than the cliché of black coffee and Le Monde at little round sidewalk tables will be very pleasantly surprised by variety revealed in this neat little book by Marie-France Boyer and photographer Eric Morin. From Paris haunts much like the stereotype, to rustic village cafes far outside the metropolis, to the retreats of artists or tradesmen, author and photographer demonstrate that the café is more than a place, but rather an intimate expression of the French lifestyle.
The beautiful photos are by far the most engrossing part of this book. But the writing is valuable too, describing the golden age of French cafes, the rise of important establishments like Momus, Les Deux Garçons in Aix-en-Provence, or the Marly, and the influence of the cafes on French art and culture. And though the book's almost a decade old now, the Guide at the end should still be useful in tracking down many of the cafes featured in photo and text.
In all, whether you're an experienced boulevardier, a traveler with fond memories, or just someone looking to experience French culture vicariously, "The French Café" should inspire many happy thoughts.
You should buy one of these cafés........2000-05-12
You can plan a trip accross France with this book as your only guide. Walking from "bistro" to café from Nice to Paris, Loire-valley to Nantes and Mont-Saint-Michel. Most of the places mentioned here are typically french. No stranger ever thought of pushing the doors. Eric Morin, photographer, knows well this subject. He lives in the Bastille district of Paris. He knows well the most hidden and most fashionable places. Because he spent some happy week-ends in Château du Verger in Anjou (close to Nantes), he collected great pictures from La Cigale and Trentemoult fishing harbour of Nantes. Did you ever dream of becoming a café tender in rural France? would you like to become the "manager" of a warm café where french workers will start the day drinking a Muscadet at 7 am? Marie-France Boyer, as usual, gives practical advices together with inspiring pictures. She will tell you how and where to buy cafés in France, what are "listed historic monuments" in France (some cafés are). A lot of cafés names and addresses are given at the end of this joyful and useful guide to real France. If you really love cafés, you should also buy "The cafés of Paris" asin:1566562783 and "Literary cafés of Paris".

Customer Reviews:
good resource but pricey.......2004-06-06
This book is a good resource but some pictures are not very good quality. I don't know why this book is so expensive compared to other restaurant books. I have "Cafes and Restaurants" by Laura Andreini and "Contemporary Japanese Restaurant Design" by Motoko Jitsukawa. I find myself going to those 2 books more often than I do with this one.
A MUST HAVE...........2003-10-09
You cant start a new restaurant before you check what exists around the world. You will not see only the pictures of the places but the bluprints as well.
