Book Description
This award-winning quilter demonstrates her novel, simplified technique, Take Away Applique. Step-by-step color photographs illustrate this new technique along with simple directions. Her unique way of quilting without a frame or hoop will surprise you. Sheer graphic impact, diversity of blue-ribbon quilt designs, insights into the creative process, and technical hints for improving one's next quilt are included. Wonderful patterns and easy-to-follow directions are sure to inspire you to applique Suzanne's way. AUTHORBIO: Suzanne Marshall traces her development as a quilter to a library book and her collection of fabric scraps, gathered through many years of making clothes. Her first quilts were utilitarian, increasing in size with the growth of her children. Only in the mid-1980s did this self-taught quilter begin to design decorative quilts. She entered the first local contest in 1985 and her first national competition in 1988. Recognition came rapidly after that. REVIEW: At first glance, the striking appliqued quilt on this book's cover speaks to beautiful traditional symmetry. Then you notice that some of the quilt's carefully appliqued motifs are actually insects, clever additions to a work appropriately titled Don't Bug Me! A self-taught quilter, Marshall uses her own 'take-away applique' technique for accurate placing of applique pieces. Here she leads the reader through this technique in step-by-step fashion....

Bitten by Suzanne's bugs!!.......1998-06-15
I am cursed!!! This morning at 5:30 I am up working on an applique piece consisting of "bugs". Suzanne's book is marvelous. I am so inspired to try all of her suggestions. Quilting pox is bad enough, but now I have insect pox also. Suzanne has given me the freedom to do my own thing. I have hidden my work before because it wasn't done by traditional quilting standards. Bah, Hum"bug" to that! I treasure my autographed copy of Take-Away Applique as not only a techniques guideline, but also as an insight into a healing exercise. All artists will appreciate the diary form of this book as Suzanne progresses through each piece.
Book Description
Lofts, by definition, are former commercial spaces that have been converted for residential use and living/working environments. But lofts, by design, are vast silent expanses, soaring arches, stalwart steel girders, massive beams, and all the powerful drama of a curtain-time stage set. The importance of urban loft design for the architectural and design world is highlighted in this collection of the finest, most dramatic of these transformed spaces.
Features six categories-minimalist, fifties revival, modernist, deconstructionalist, multi-purpose, and post-industrialist-from six major international cities-New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, London, Paris, and Tokyo

Rather excellent.......2001-03-11
I have only really studied 3 loft books and this would be my second favorite.
The author looks at Manhattan lofts exclusively for one half of the book and uses the other half for projects all over the world. All in all, her selection is good in that the reader gets a fair sense of what is currently happening in the design of these spaces (lofts). You usually get about 3-4 color photos per loft, a short description and floor plan.
Overall, a great book and source of inspiration if you find yourself with an abandoned, urban space and about a million dollars.
Nothing new here.......2000-10-26
The good thing about this book is that it does show pictures of lofts....that's about it. It showcased some lofts that have been pictured in other books before, and the picture quality is not always the best(at times the photographs look as though they were taken twenty years ago or with bad film). I usually read my design books but after about halfway through, I just looked at the pictures. Save your money for something else.
Lofts New Designs for Urban Living.......2000-03-14
I bought this book on the strong recommendation of the other reviewers and was disappointed. I have bought 8 books on the subject of lofts and this is my least favorate. The photos are generic architect shots, the layout bland and the printing is flat and sometimes fuzzy, and just unappealing.
Check out Living in Space and the International Book of Lofts.
I have to wonder if the other reviewers are friends of the author...
(Just my opinion, your milage may vary...)

well worth the money.......2000-01-09
the author, Felicia Eisenberg Molnar, mirrors the clean minimalist sense of design in some the photographed loft spaces in her text. ms. molnar's words explain the realized mission of architect, designer, and client devoid of the fuzziness and fussiness of many books on interior design. the reader is walked and talked through converted industrial spaces and shown how they have been transformed for the humans fortunate to inhabit them.
Book Description
Today, the loft blueprint exerts a powerful influence on the design of our homes, both in terms of space planning and the use of materials. Lofts come in all shapes and sizes and a host of interior styles. what makes a loft a loft is no longer dependent on size and the presence of industrial details, but has to do with fundamental qualities of planning and design that are equally applicable in more conventional livings spaces. Written by leading interior writer Elizabeth Wilhide, New Loft Living presents the latest take on the loft ideal, with a selection of new and innovative converted spaced by some of the most highly regarded architects and designers in Europe and the USA.
Part 1: Space Planning examines structural ways to exploit volume, and looks at ways to balance open areas and private enclosures with the use of pods and screens.
Part 2: Decor & Design assesses materials and furnishings--eveyrthing from glass, wood, and metal to plastic, rubber, and stone--and illustrates how loft spaces allow you to break free from the constraints of conventional decorating with the use of contemporary and sometimes unexpected materials. It also shows how devices such as lighting and photomurals can be employed to great effect.
Part 3: Zones explains how to optimize the space at your disposal. Clever storage frees up space, while ingenious transformable fittings allow you to it for different needs. There are also solutions for creating a flexible flow of activities within a single space, integrating work areas within the home and making the most of outside spaces.
Interspersed throughout are 14 case studies, complete with the architect's plan, which tell the fulls stories of the best examples of innovative architecture and design and offer insight into different spacial arrangements.
Definitive, aspirational, practical, and authoritative, New Loft Living illustrates how, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, loft living has truly come of age.

ordinary.......2006-06-26
Nothing special.
Just one among many others similar choices.
If you are an architect, looking for a good source book and innovative ideas, that's not the best choice. Just an ordinary book...
Lots of Photograhs.......2006-01-01
I really like this book - it is very inspirational as you see everything from architectural point of view. Photograhs quality is good and there are lots of them, most of them taken from almost empty rooms but even without furniture on some photos, you are simply just amazed of apartments this book holds. If you love interior decorating and modern living this book might be nice inspirational source for your next project - as it was to me!
Beautiful Ideals.......2005-04-29
It's a goreous book. Usually the people that live in these spaces are in cities that you can not afford to buy a house, but because of career choices, or location must live in limited spaces in a major international city. It's more of a coffee table book for the reader "to dream" that you can live in one of these studios for a summer.
Basically, if you live in a studio, and want to remodel your apartment into one these units, it will take a lot of creative resources to pay to transform a unit into one of the studios' seen in the pages of this book.
If you have some money to transform your studio apartment, I have one word for you..murphy bed...and please shop around....
The author besides focusing on international locations around the world, outlines the furniture used in these units (multi-functional), and the use of every inch of wall space-to help the dweller survive living in a small space.

Lofts : Living and Working Spaces.......2000-03-31
An excellent resource for a design and non design individual, especially for those that intend to live in loft spaces. Great photographs that have been professionally presented, Exquisite use of space in their design samples.
Book Description
This book exposes the meeting of art and real estate markets, the happy meeting between artists' demand for housing and city officials and homeowners who wanted to 'upgrade' their neighborhoods by private market means--and how those artists were used and abandoned by real estate developers and investors who were banking on rising property values.
Customer Reviews:
A Necessary Book.......2006-03-19
I thought it was going to be more about the adventures in loft living (or something like that), but it was about economics, politics, and class/race. At times, it was dry. However, I know it's a fairly classic text and an important read.
Author's comments: what LOFT LIVING tells us about cities.......1999-04-21
When I wrote this book about the transformation of lower Manhattan a number of years ago, SoHo was already recognized as an artists' and a landmark loft district. Because of the many modern art galleries and the neighborhood's general ambiance of being "discovered," it also became a tourist destination. I wanted to explain the process of discovery--how derelict loft spaces attracted artists in the 1960s and 1970s, and through them, provided a cultural core for the commercial redevelopment of the central city. Did I predict that the art galleries would flee to another neighborhood, and be replaced by clothing stores and shoe boutiques? That rents would rise and struggling artists would be replaced by rock stars and rich people? LOFT LIVING lays the groundwork for these developments, exposing the connections between chic urban lifestyle, media hype, and real estate developers. This book was fun to write and, I think, prescient.
Book Description
The lofts in this book provide a good example of just how far the renovation and design of these far-from-typical dwellings has progressed. A compilation of the best lofts found in four trend-setting cities should not, however, be understood as a mere catalog. Quite the opposite, it represents a unique opportunity to get an insight into another way of living. Despite obvious differences, these lofts share common features such as space, natural light, and the importance of quality over quantity. With all their excesses and all their limitations, one can only conclude that there is something more-between intangible and magical-to these spaces that draws certain people to live and work in them.

Loft Living looks at the modern dwelling phenomenon that is "the ultimate in cool contemporary living." Peggy Vance considers 15 loft apartments that vary in style from "urban apartments in converted industrial buildings to a rural idyll in a former barn" in this attractive coffee-table book. Vance begins with the history of loft apartments, from Andy Warhol's New York, where starving artists were forced to sleep in their studios to save money, to modern, architect-designed warehouses worth millions. She goes on to showcase lofts, including a derelict New York power station turned family home, a minimalist converted school in South London, and an Italian former factory that now has a sumptuous antiques-filled interior.
The book covers styles from baroque to ultramodern and investigates features such as a cinema kitchen, a colorful shower pod, and a glass mezzanine. The tales of these conversions are all the more appealing for their human element. Vance comments on what each space is like to live in and why its owners have chosen particular features. For example, the style of New York architect William Chatham's home had to change when he needed to include children in his metropolitan loft.
Interestingly, the book includes a historical perspective on each area and building included, and Vance points out architectural features that make particular buildings suitable for loft conversion. For example, a former printworks in London's Clerkenwell, which was in such a state of disrepair that it was almost demolished, was saved by its concrete frame structure and huge metal-framed windows, which made it an ideal candidate for renovation. Accompanied by high-quality photographs that give the book a glossy feel, Loft Living is an inspiration for anyone who is thinking of, or just dreaming about, open-plan living. --Karen Homer
