Snazaroo Zoo: A Great Book for Great Costumes.......2000-03-13
As an amateur makeup artist and face painter, I'm always on the lookout for books with new and creative ideas for characters. This is especially true of animals. The stock characters of cat, mouse and rabbit can become rather worn out over time. The book "Snazaroo Zoo" fulfills this need for new ideas. Sponsored by the Snazaroo face paint company, this book contains detailed, step-by-step face painting instructions for 18 different animals. This includes the standard mammals, but adds such creatures as a turtle, an owl, a vampire bat and even a stegosaurus! In addition to the face paint hints, "Snazaroo Zoo" also contains costume instructions for each animal, as well as general information regarding transfering basic patterns and sewing. This large, well-photographed book would be a welcome addition to the library of face painters and parents alike.
Book Description
Country living and style permeates every aspect of our culture- we yearn for the simplicity and comfort of country style living as seen in the pages of popular publications like Country Living Magazine and in Shabby Chic décor. There are many shades of country to match your personal style and Shades of Country, written by Chippy Irvine, masterfully presents some of America’s most beautiful, charming and fascinating country houses. Chippy introduces six unique country styles; Farmhouse, Grand Country, Cottage, Rusticator, Clean and Simple, and Urban Arcadia; enrich a home with warmth, texture, color and beauty. Shades of Country shows how you can mix and match styles or create a unified look while helping you enjoy the comfort of living in country style.

So So.......2007-06-11
This book was a bit disapointing. The disappointment comes from the intrepetation of Country style or English country style, as shown the the photographs, as being lots of clutter and in some cases not the best of taste. I have many other style books that show how charming Country style, antiques and hodge podge collections can be, but somehow many of the examples in this book miss the mark. Maybe the author's take on Country style is just not my cup of country tea, so to speak. Many photos are from the author's own home and I felt that narrowed the scope of the book somewhat.
inspiration for your dream home.......2007-02-28
I can seldom resist a good décor book, especially one on Country Style. My current excuse is that I'm looking for ideas I can use in my own country house which I've been renovating for the past 5 years.
Shades of Country is perfect for the amateur decorator and it's reasonably priced too. It is profusely illustrated with a wealth of examples of actual American homes -- including the author's own country retreat -- which are not only beautiful but emphasize comfort & practicality. Some of them are derived from European country styles, but most are what we think of as typically American - east coast farmhouses, Shaker simplicity, Montana ranch and rustic Adirondack cabin.
There is something for every taste here; cosy bedrooms with iron beds & antique bureaus & old quilts in muted pastels; walls painted, wallpapered, wainscotted or of varnished logs; walls hung with blue and white platters, old portraits or prints or ornate mirrors; a stair rail made from a birch tree; support posts disguised as palm trees; kitchens with open shelves of china bowls or glassware, and red-painted iron pots hanging from overhead beams; staircases plain or classic; toile's and stripes and rose-bouquet chintzes; floral cushions on a jade green slip-covered sofa; cobalt blue cushions on spruce-green wicker chairs on a white-painted verandah; a window box on a country out-house, and bookshelves - which I seldom see in American decor magazines - including one converted from a fireplace hole-in-the-wall (I guess I'm not the first to think of doing that) and fluted pilasters high-lighting an otherwise plain bookshelf .
Whether you are renovating your home; or still dreaming of that someday home in the country; updating a tired décor or looking for ideas for colour schemes or a knick-knack shelf, this book will inspire you.
Beautiful Country Homes.......2007-01-16
This may not break any new ground in decorating, but I never fail to enjoy browsing one more book on the topic of country style. This shows use of fabrics, accessories, paint and furniture that makes country style what it is. It also defines some sub-genres of country; Farmhouse, Grand Country, Cottage, Rusticator, Clean and Simple, and Urban Arcadia.
If you like Country Living magazine or enjoy the Shabby Chic trend, then you'll find pleasure in this book.
Ho-hum.......2006-12-30
In my opinion, this book did not "live up to" it's cover. Too many of the rooms looked very dated. I love the idea of collecting over time but many of these rooms were very lackluster and boring. I requested it as a Christmas gift and wish I could un-request it!
Just another potpourri book..........2006-10-20
I love interior decorating books, especially Colonial, Regency and Victorian or English Country Style. But this book covers too much territory. A few pictures of each, as well as others styles like Ranch, or French. If you are having trouble deciding on a style, this book might help you. It has lovely illustrations, but again, as it is trying to cover many different styles falling under the broad title of "Country" your information is limited. There are too many books coming out like this. Specialty books are much better. Look to Rizzoli for the best in interior decorating books, or if you want some kind of country, best buy a book that covers that one particular style. I browsed through this at the store, hoping it might make a good Christmas present for me, but it ended up back on the shelf.
Book Description
This beautiful book focuses on Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. Beginning in 1902, Tiffany (1848–1933) designed every aspect of the immense home, which had eighty-four rooms and eight levels, and extensive grounds into which the house was carefully integrated. Tiffany’s residential masterpiece was also a quasi-museum, for he filled it with his own works—windows, glassware, pottery, enamels, lamps, oil paintings, and watercolors—as well as with objects from his collections of Islamic, Asian, and Native American art.
Laurelton Hall burned down in 1957, but about ten years earlier most of its contents had been removed and sold. Every aspect of the estate is examined and re-created in this volume: its terraced gardens with fountains and pools; the many outbuildings; and Tiffany’s life there. The interior decoration of Laurelton Hall, a particular focus of the book, is represented by both numerous period photographs and newly commissioned color photography of surviving artworks and salvaged architectural components from the estate. For all who admire Tiffany and his work, this book presents a unique portrait of his remarkable home.

This is an excellent and scholarly book filled with incredible photos and descriptions of LCT's home, Laurelton Hall. The author has written a series of fine chapters that look at all aspects of this magnificent residence. What the fire at Laurelton destroyed, this book restores with words and photos. For all of you who love Tiffany's artistry, this book is not to be missed!

Through down-home storytelling, Reba McEntire offers her fans a glimpse into her personal life, as well as a healthy dose of traditional, God-lovin' values. Like a quilt, McEntire's book of country comfort is stitched from real-life material--little scraps of wisdom that miraculously piece together into a heartfelt mosaic.
Right from the start McEntire establishes herself as a "modern country woman," able to explore a spider's web with her son as deftly as she can explore the World Wide Web. Herein lies the strength of McEntire's writing, her ability to apply the old, country traditions to the more contemporary values that her readers are likely to identify with. Chapter titles such as "Tougher Than You Think," "A Mama's Way," and "Let a Smile be Your Umbrella ... but Don't Forget Your Raincoat" all allude to the grit and honey texture of this loving book of back porch inspiration. --Gail Hudson

Comfort from a Country Quilt.......2006-08-26
I found myself reading with Reba's voice in my head. Very good reading.
It really is like a quilt ..........2006-01-18
Warm and snuggly -- like the woman herself. I'm glad Reba found the time to write this book. It's as though she's watching my family from outside in the bushes. Which I think would be illegal, so I hope she's not. Anyway, thank you Reba for changing my life, by changing the way I use blankets. You're No. 1 in my book and your book's No. 1 with me.
reba at it again.......2003-06-19
there is no doubt that reba has a great writing style and many stories to tell. ifyou thought that reba:my story was good then you will love this book too. comfort from a country quilt is a must have for any reba fan or anyone interested in a good book.

Customer Reviews:
Never judge a book by its cover..........2004-02-21
Just because the title of a book has the word "Cottage" in it, does not mean it is a book about Cottage Design. Who the author is, has a great deal of bearing on what you will find inside the pages of said book. Any one who would pick up a book by Lynette Jensen would realize she is a quilter and "Designer" of quilts. Ms.Jensen is a very well known and talented designer. If "Cottage" design isn't your style...then neither is this book. I happen to love her work, the book is a pleasure to look at, to gather ideas or improvise your own from hers. I enjoy looking at it over and over.
Great book for Quilters.......2003-01-25
Lynette Jensen is very well known by those who quilt. Her books contain mainly quilting patterns or ideas for decorating and entertaining with quilts and accessories. For those of you who quilt this book will not be a dissappointment. It delivers all of the great quilting patterns, tips and hints that her books are so well known for. This is a great book for a quilter.
Pretty Picture book.......2002-11-14
This book would make a lovely coffeetable book. If you are looking for a book about quilting then this is not for you. I found this book to mostly showcase what the author's accomplishments rather than teach others. I love Jensen's quilts but feel like I've been cheated with this book.
Delightful and Informative.......2002-07-13
Lynette Jensen has given us an information packed, beautiful book here. She has lovingly decorated her newly married daughter's starter home in tipical Lynette style. There are how to's for a lovely Bridal Shower,a Garden Party,Fourth of July picnic and much more! There are vintage postcards to copy, great decoupage ideas and many wonderful recipes, gifts, not to mention lovely quilts (including a fabulous yo-yo quilt!) I don't see how you could expect any more from a book. It's just wonderful!
Can you tell I love this book?
A big disappointment.......2002-01-11
Gives cottage style a bad name. Not good decorating. Very cutesy. Junky. Dated. Busy. Sorry I bought it. Settings look more like bad crafts shops than the kinds of home I'd want to live in. I read after I got this that this person is not a designer but a crafter, which explains why this is so junky.

Book Description
In the last decade the use of non-governmental agencies (NGOs) to promote development and reduce poverty and hunger has become a major feature of development policy. Donors have poured funds into NGOs, governments have allocated them major responsibilities and their number and size has grown. Has this popularity helped them to solve the problems of poverty or has it changed them so that they are now part of the 'development industry' that they used to criticize? This book provides the most detailed study available of the ways in which NGO-State-Donor relationships have changed the role that NGOs play in development. Its papers are introduced by two international experts on the topic and the contributors are leading academics and senior practitioners. The picture that emerges from the general reviews and detailed case studies of African, Asian and Latin American NGOs, is a complex one. However, the authors conclude that there is much evidence that NGOs are 'losing their roots' - getting closer to donors and governments and more distant to the poor and disempowered who they seek to assist.

A Gem of a Book.......2003-01-04
A perfect title. Great recipes AND extra little stories about the recipe's history or special ingredient. It's what makes a good recipe beloved. You can almost see Ruth Allman in her kitchen making her sourdough soft ginger cookies with the wind howling outside. It makes me think these recipes were handed down within my own family. Focus is on ingredients that travel and store well and those that suit Alaska's climate: lemons, cranberries, prunes, and pumpkin in winter and oh those fresh berries in summer.
I received this cookbook from a friend several years ago and it has been in continual use since then. The recipe selection is not exhaustive, and that's the good part. You don't get lost in all the recipes, but this book contains some gems. The Vagabond Blues Blueberry Coffee Cake is one of my favorites with its satisfying lemon-ricotta cheese filling. The author includes some basic recipes (e.g., rhubarb pie, lemon meringe pie, and lemon squares) that are the best I've tried. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves baked goods. Ms. Eppenbach, I wish you would write another.

Decorating Inspiration.......2000-04-03
I've truly enjoyed owning and using this book and pull it out of my bookcase frequently for ideas and inspiration. It's long on pictures and short on writing but that's okay. Almost every other page contains a full page, expertly photographed, picture of a room, close-up portion of a room or setting that enables readers to see the details. This makes it all the easier to adapt the wealth of ideas in one's own home. My decorating is done on a very tight budget so I'm always looking for examples that depend more on creativity than expensive furnishings and this book fits my needs very well. The different sections cover each room of the house, with additional chapters on outdoor settings like porches and gardens and, my favorite, Christmas and collectibles. While the photos are the main elements, the narration is both concise and useful. Each two-page spread of photographs contains a paragraph that describes a different element of the country style, helping the reader to see why those particular photo examples were grouped together. In addition, every photograph is accompanied by a sentence or two that directs readers to the details of the example. "The Comforts of Country" also includes a one page index at the end, which I always appreciate in almost any non-fiction book. Not only is this book beautiful to read but it's also useful and the index makes it even more useable.
