Book Description

The colorful and charming decorations on French Quimper pottery (pronounced Kem-pair) have made it a popular ware for over 300 years. Brightly clad men and women, many in the traditional clothing of Brittany, and other designs, reflect the Celtic heritage of Breton culture: its rolling green countryside, grazing animals, and small fishing villages. Over the years, a tremendous amount has been exported to North America and England. Quimper faience has been produced by three primary factories in the French town of Quimper, and this book explains, compares and contrasts the factories and their products. Today old Quimper ware is collected avidly here and abroad and the new ware is cherished. 290 clear color photographs, makers' marks, and the useful, newly updated price guide make this a necessary reference for all who are interested in ceramics.

A useful compact book to carry around with you while in France. The price guide dated 1998 needs updating.

3 out of 5 stars Quimper Poiery by Anne Marie O'Neill.......2001-09-19

This is a slim volume with fewer than 20 pages of hstory and description of Quimper pottery. It is far from exhaustive, concentrating on one factory to the exclusion of all else. There are some fine pictures which make up the other 134 pages in the book. Captions are full and informative. It gives a good graphic introduction to the faience but is not for the serious collector.

4 out of 5 stars Quimper First Visited.......2007-05-14

As a more recent collector of Quimper I needed to purchase a good guide on the earlier and more expensive wares. I found the history of the origins, styles and values most interesting and useful. The book was well illustrated covering the various styles and the all important section on the Factory Marks complemented the volume at the end.

The History of the people andpottery of Provenc includes much pottery of the region, but particularly the development of Quimper. The pictures are lovely and the values listed are valid.

A valuable book in this field. Better and fuller text than most Quimper books. Along with the average color photos, there is a broad and useful appendix of many small b&w photos. A good addition to any faience library, but -- it is too expensive, even through Amazon.com! Publisher, get real!

              Book Description

Beginning with studio practices and safety rules, this information-packed handbook is appropriate for both newcomers and experienced dyers but assumes that readers have a serious interest in textile design. An overview of dyeing starts with fibers and fabrics and discusses all aspects of the dyes favored by textile studios—fiber reactive, acid, vat, and disperse—before explaining discharging, screen printing, monoprinting, stamping, stenciling, resist dyeing, dévoré, and painting. Would-be fabric artists are advised along the way to identify a personal approach to dyeing—free spirit? rule-follower?—and color photographs of work by today's top fiber artists elucidate prevailing styles. Recipes and techniques are accompanied by step-by-step instructions with photographs, and a concealed spiral binding allows the book to lie flat. Ten appendices include a worksheet for recording chemicals, procedures, and costs for all projects; a guide to washing fabric; descriptions of stock solutions, thickeners, and steaming; a metric conversion table; and a guide to water temperatures.

Others have already related the key points about this book. I just want to further confirm for everyone looking to buy it that this author really did an EXCELLENT job. She obviously is a art and TECHNICAL expert in this field. She could've taken less time and put out a book that would've gotten her a solid 4.5-star rating. Instead she obviously put in twice the time and ended up with a 10-star book. She gives you all the details that people serious about trying complicated crafts look for but rarely find without studying in the studio of a professional. I just picked this up from the NEW BOOKS rack at the library because I am generally interested in the subjected. Like the one person so far who has given her a lower rating, it did make me think that this is probably too difficult for me. But on the other hand, she has many photos showing the possibilities of what I might be able to accomplish if I did try and it's very seductive. Nothing very special worth accomplishing comes easily and that seems to also apply to fabric art. I also appreciate the thoughtfulness of her making the binding a spiral so the pages lay perfectly flat for easy reference while you follow the directions. If I decide to seriously try this craft, it will be this book that I buy and I doubt I'd even need to buy another one ever.

5 out of 5 stars Throw away your notes - this is all you need!.......2007-09-04

This book has enabled me to recycle ALL of my class and workshop notes and just use this book - it's all there and in great detail. (now I have space for MORE books)

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2007-07-18

Holly Brackmann's new book The Surface Designer's Handbook is long over-due and I have ordered it as the textbook for all my fibers classes. As soon as it arrived my students all wanted their own personal copy so several of them purchased it outright just on sight alone. The spiral binding is excellent and the extent of the techniques covered is wonderful. I teach both beginners and advanced fibers students and this book has everything we need as a textbook.

I use it myself for my own work and find it very helpful, well organized and thorough. The information about making color cards with diluted MX dye on watercolor paper is worth the selling price all by itself. It is a technique I knew nothing about and I am thrilled to learn about it. It has saved hours and hours of dye testing time.

In my classes we had been using Kate Wells' book Fabric Dyeing and Printing and prior to that, Proctor and Lew's Surface Design for Fabric. Now, 16 years later, Holly's excellent book has arrived and is the handbook of the hour. It is up to date, comprehensive and thorough, and should be in everyone's library that works with dyes, textile paints and cloth. It improves on and surpasses every handbook published to date and encompasses a massive amount of information.

I look forward to using it in my classes for many years to come and I salute Holly for the enormous amount of work that went into creating this book. She has provided a gift for the entire surface design community both here and abroad.

This book is so complete that you nearly do not need any other books for working with surface design, dyeing and all processes related to fibre arts.

Congratualtions to the author, Holly Brackman for putting together the most comprehensive manual ever.

3 out of 5 stars too much to digest.......2007-06-30

I had hoped for a book that had practical suggestions for using surface design in mixed media and art quilt work. So much of this book is devoted to very technical dye processes that I find only a small portion of it is actually of help to me. If I wasn't already a bit afraid of dying my own fabric, I certainly am now!

              Book Description

Early textile dyers signed oaths that they would not reveal any of the process. Fortunately, author Carolyn Dahl openly shares the secrets of dyeing, painting, and patterning beautiful cloth she has gleaned in art schools. This guide is the next best thing to having a master artist in the studio.

Entertaining stories awaken memories of childhood coloring books, leaf prints, iron-on designs, and the tie-dyed T-shirts most of us experienced at some point in our lives. Readers will be inspired as they follow step-by-step photographs and instructions full of hints and secrets for using luminous color to transform white cloth into artistic masterpieces. Connoisseurs of the decorative arts and those who are merely curious about the fabrics they wear and use in everyday life will find much to interest them.

              * Produce successful results without an instructor * Author relates own experiences, telling why a technique is done, giving more control to the dyer * Contains lots of fresh ideas

5 out of 5 stars CLEAR and PRECISE.......2007-09-03

I think it is the clarity and precision with which the author presents her ideas. Very good resource material for my daughter. She uses it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Addition to My Fabric Painting Resource Library.......2006-03-30

I've already collected a number of painting/dyeing/surface design books for working with fabric, and this makes an excellent addition. I don't think it could stand alone as the be-all and end-all, but it is comprehensive in the sense that the author presents all kinds of ideas and inspiration, as well as photographs and instructions/resources. The one thing I might have found more helpful would be greater detail in the steps she took to achieve certain results. Although she does offer descriptions, it seems that sometimes steps and/or details of the process are missing.

              4 out of 5 stars Explains why.......2006-01-08

This book is particularly strong on explaining the theories behind the different fabric types and why they react as they do to dyes and paints. Some of the instructions are very clear and good photos of stamps and other printing techniques. I found the finished items and cloth a bit messy - not really my style. But a good addition to the library.

              4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2005-10-05

This book is wonderfully comprehensive of the latest methods for embellishing with dyes and inks. I would have liked to have seen other artists results with her techniques, but I find the technical information more than compensates.

              5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-09-22

I have read many "how to books" that are advertisments for their
products or books bragging about their wonderful artwork but this book tells all! It is very easy to understand and tells
exactly how to get the results wanted. What a refreshing change!

                5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Stuff!.......2001-06-10

I borrowed this book from my local library to look up information on how to turn dye into printing ink...Having found that information quickly, the book was impossible to put down. Each section captured my interest in turn and the great illustrations made me want to try most of the other techniques, and as soon as possible. This book would suit anyone from a textile beginner to the most advanced student at university level...perhaps even the textile practitioner, wishing to try new techniqes. It is clearly written but best of all, in reading it, you feel it is more than possible to try --and achieve--an exciting result. Thanks, Kate.

If you are looking for specific instruction on how to get started in these crafts, or you are trying to enhance your technique, this book is not for you. It is highly historical and gives scanty direction. Judging by other books I have read, the history isn't even that good.

This Singer series book is quite nice. However, it turns out to be a shorter version of another book, Exploring Textile Arts, published two years later by the same publisher. Nowhere does either book indicate this relationship, but the text and illustrations for the various techniques described are identical. Buy one or the other, but not both!

As an artist who works with both fabrics and paint; as well as various other media I was very impressed and pleased. The book features step by step instructions; great illustrations and photography. All in all a beautiful and very useful tool for an artist; home decorator; fashion decorator; designer; fiber art major; textile artist; and anyone fascinated by creating cool works of art or fashion! a great reference book covering many aspects of dyeing. Gives plenty of detail and recipes.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for novice or master textile lover........2003-01-09

If you are the least bit interested in the how to and how not to aspects of dying fabrics of all types this book will be one you will want to add to your home library. Even though I have been doing textile art for ages, even I learned a few things from the book.

The book will be one that novice or master should enjoy and pretty much covers all types of fabrics from knobby to smooth as well as why some dyes set up well on one type of texture and not so well on another.

If you love to sew or have a streak of clothing adventure check the book out and discover the pleasures of making some special clothes for yourself. And the price is excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to many dyeing techniques, great dye mixology.......2001-04-30

This book presents a great introduction to many different dyeing techniques using either fiber-reactive or acid dyes. The numerous galleries throughout the book will help inspire you.

The book starts out with a great explanation of the types of dyes, paints and pigments available. It then covers techniques and tools including good safety advice and fabric preparation. Tips for over-dyeing, stitching and direct application are here too.

Next, thickened dyes, gutta and watercolor techniques are used to create painterly effects. Tied-resists follow including finger-pleated silk and nouveau shibori. Then batik, block- printing and marbling are taught. The instructions are excellent with detailed step-by-step processes accompanied by photos. However, be aware the projects here teach techniques. There are no templates or the like so it would be nearly impossible to create an item identical to the ones in the book.

The best part of the book is the chapter on color theory and dye mixology. It thoroughly explains the cryptic instructions that come with dyes and how to create your own recipe card.

The galleries are awesome. There is one for each section and each includes at least eight different artists displaying their work with the basic techniques used. A directory of all the artists including phone numbers is included in the appendix along with lists of supplies, schools that have degree textile programs and a glossary of terms.
