5 out of 5 stars Book 3 (Nature Aquarium World.......2007-05-31

This really is a fantastic book. Try to understand the Japanese culture and you'll understand the way mr. Takashi Amano disigns his aquariums.
The use of simplicity is amazing but not easy to realize. For every aquarist is the whole serie 1,2,3 a must. Fantastic. Good written and very nice taken photos as well.

4 out of 5 stars If you love the first two you will love this one too!.......2007-01-19

the first two books were great with my personal fave being Nature Aquarium World 1 but this one was beautifully designed and illistrated. Not only are the illistrations wounderful but the "about takashi" section of the book made for some brief and enlighting reading.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures but horrible for information.......2003-02-10

I got this book and I was suprized to find out that it had very little information whatsoever as to how his tanks were set up and the techniques he uses. I would not recommend this book for anything other then something nice to look at and wish that you hand the time to put into making your own tanks look like that.

4 out of 5 stars Obviously part III.......2002-05-29

Important to note this is part III in the series. If you own part one, this is a nice addition. If you don't own part one, get it first. It's the best of Amano's photo books. Yes, these are well photographed coffee table books, not manuals to "do it yourself," although they do give you a lot of good info to work with.

The plant names don't correspond with Western plant names. You'll have to ID things yourself based on the photographs.

A great book of inspiration once you know the essentials of aquatic plantscaping & fishkeeping.

Amano's tanks are a living work of art. If you're already into freshwater planted fishtanks, get this book! After you've bought book one, Nature Aquarium World, of course

4 out of 5 stars Nature Aquarium World : Book 3.......2000-02-07

Its important to note that this book is a series of photographs. There is not very much information to read except how the author looks after the tanks. The photographs are awe inspiring and its worth a place on anyone's bookshelf. The author works WITH nature to set up these tanks and the results are stunning.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Misleadingly quoted title of the book.......2006-05-03

As mentioned in the other customer reviews, this book is good in the large amount of big photos and is not for thorough information for each kind of fish included.

The number of species mentioned in the book, which is therefore critical for its value, is wrongly quoted both in the heading of this webpage and in the editor review as 800 species instead of the true 650 species as printed clearly on the book cover.

I think it should be corrected and not to mislead other to buy this valuable book disappointedly.

3 out of 5 stars Needs more detail.......2002-12-25

This book isn't bad but it is really only useful for identifying species. If you need more information on the care and compatibility with other species look somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars A bit of everything in living color.......2000-01-11

This is my favorite book for browsing about species from not only the fish that I keep (ie African Cichlids), but also consider all the others. While the information isn't very deep, it certainly piques your interest because of the beautiful pictures. You can see many rare and exotic species captured here.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent publication.......1999-06-11

This is a really well produced book that is full of beautiful photographs. The double page layout of similar species really helps when comparing closely related species. The text is informative but concise which is probably the book's only weak point. It only takes you a few seconds to read through the text for a species leaving you wanting to know more information.

5 out of 5 stars REALLY top notch book!!.......1998-12-17

This book was a major motivating factor in my even becoming an Aquarist! Great, up to date information- Nice photos- Super-accurate descriptions of fish! Really nicely done!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars one of the best inspirational aquascaping books.......2007-05-22

One buys this book for the pictures. They deserve five stars. I am using this book for inspiration as to what can be achieved with nano and micro tanks.

The shortcomings of this book are only to blame this book for being what it is not and what it does not claim to be. It does not claim to be a 'how to' book, though I believe many readers (me included) wish it WAS a 'how to' book. As such, one can continue moaning about how inaccurate the scientific names of plants are; how little information there is on planting, propagating and maintaining the plants; what the mineral contents of the substrate and fertilizers are; what the light spectrum and intensity is; etcetera...

So, although I love the book. I'm going to minus one star for the lousy reason that it isn't what I want it to be.

3 out of 5 stars Great picturebook, but not a very good "Educational"........2007-05-21

I, really think it was a good book for beginners like me, but it wasn't what I was looking for. It had great photography, but it was very unclear how to make a beautiful, planted aquarium grow. It's very good in somethings and lacks in others.

4 out of 5 stars Great as usual.......2006-02-22

As usually with Takashi Amano's work it has superb aquascapes and pictures. Although, they have changed the paper used to a cheaper kind and not the glossy type of the earlier editions. It also states some of the tank's data like temp and the species of plants and fishes used in the setup. However, if your planning to buy this book to learn to how to take care and maintain aquatic plants, you will be disappointed. This is not for aquatic plant reference, this book is more on inspiring you to make good aquascapes. If you want a better reference on the care and maintenance of aquatic plants maybe Pablo Teepot's book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars spectacular.......2006-01-19

This book is a fantastic coffee table book. If you are looking for aquascaping inspiration BUY THIS BOOK!!. However if you are looking for instruction on how to aquascape it does not give you this. The only gripe is that Takashi Amano hasen't named any of the wonderful flora or fauna used. In my opinion it is the best book out of the three 'Nature Aquarium World' series although his other two go into more detail. Buy it and you won't be able to put it down. Beautifully enchanting, a true work of art.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-10-25

I realy engoy it It is amazing to view how you can do art with aquarium plants, inclusive in little space.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive, but hard to read........2006-09-15

This book is very comprehensive. It covers over 870 species of fishes. The fishes are arranged in alphabetical order of their scientific names. In my opinion, this is not a very way to present the fishes. There is no organization at all. Who can memorize the scientific names? I would rather see all the tetras in one section, and all the cichlids in another. If you want a book mainly for fish identification, the mini-atlas or the full atlas may be better choices. Some of the photos are in poor quality. If you are a beginner, many other books may be more suitable.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for..........2006-04-23

but perhaps I was hoping for too much. A paragraph on each of a thousand fish, plus a hundred pages on plants and another hundred on tank setup/upkeep was not was I was expecting. That is what you'll get here, however.
I was looking for a little more on each fish, it's compatibility with others and some idea of it's behaviour in the tank.
Oh well.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Book.......2006-02-01

I thought this was a good book, but not great by any means, and certainly a lot of money for what you get. If this is the Bible of Aquarium species, there is a gap in this particular market.

The section on fish species is comprehensive in its coverage, but not in the detail on each fish, ie: behaviour, territories and compatibilities. The layout is not easy to view at a glance, and annoyingly the photos are not next to the text, although usually somewhere on the same page.

The photos are often poorly executed and in many cases just plain 'honest'. None of the clever lighting highlighting potential colours in fish, just the dull colour of each fish you'd expect with no aquarium lighting or in their infancy. Usually only one photo per species, rather than showing differences in sexes and ages. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as hobbyists may be disappointed with fish selections from other 'glossier' books.

The plant section is just plain hard to read. You have to read it end to end, rather than use it as a quick reference. There is no cross-reference with common plant names. It is not even vaguely comprehensive of this gigantum subject - just a curtesy really. Again the photos, whilst pretty, do not always show the most characteristic features of each species.

My final complaint is the spelling mistakes throughout the book. Although, they don't usually preclude understanding of the sentence.

Once again, this is a good book - definitely worth borrowing from a library, but not worth spending your hard-earned money on.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and helpful book.......2005-10-28

-This is one of the best aquarium books i have seen for this price. It is well worth spending a few dollars for it. The book has everything you need to set up and maintain an aquarium as well as over 700 pages of different species of fish.

-Each page has a picture of a fish or two, then underneath the photo is information about the fish(name, size, temperature, compatibility, diet, etc...)and a couple of paragraphs explaining the fish.

-Then in the rest of the book is sections about taking care of an aquarium(tank set up, feeding, breeding different species of fish, health concerns/diseases, and a index of fish.)as well as about 100 pages on plants and how to take care of them.

-My suggestion is that if you are looking to buy a book that has information about lots of fish for a cheap price then buy this book because you are getting a lot for your money considering its over 1000 pages. But if you want a book about maintaining an aquarium then you should buy one that is focased on that more.I recomend this book over dr.axelrods mini atlas because that book is just photos and dosnt have a lot of info and isnt very helpful. but if you are willing to spend the money then i suggest encyclopedia of exotic tropical fish because it is much more indepth and is very well put togeather. So dont wait another minute and buy this book.

3 out of 5 stars All time classic.......2005-10-08

A true classic reference book from one of the real masters in the field. Personally I find the small print a bit difficult to read but the amount of information packed into the pages is amazing. Would have been good if there were more details on aquarium set up.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory for any killifish hobbyist.......1998-04-11

This book was the standard reference for identifying killifish back when it was new and is still a good reference text today. Scheel briefly described the maintenance, feeding & breeding of old world killifish, then proceeds to discuss how the species differ from each other in detail. He wrote about the scale and pigment patterns, chromosome number and shape, hemoglobin patterns, and the results of hybrid crossing experiments between different species. He also reviewed the known information about each old world killifish--some new species were described and many old species reclassified. All of this information is definitely worth having if you're a serious killifish breeder. While this book only briefly discusses how to keep and breed killies, the pictures alone are worth many times the price.

This is a nice little handbook of fish that is handy to take to the pet store when shopping. It has chapters of basic fishkeeping information, and sections on the habitats of various types of fish. It tells you how large they get, where the fish are from, and tells you how aggressive they are. It is well organized and easy to use. Many of the photos, however, show fish with very little color. Many of them seem to be photos of immature fish. All in all, this book is nice to have as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Good step-by-step guide for nursery decor.......2005-08-22

I have only made the fitted crib sheet from this book so far, but plan to make other items. I have read through the directions for each item, and they all seem to be very appropriate for raw beginners as well as more experienced sewers. I like the fact that the directions for the crib sheet include directions for making a sheet to fit a non-standard sized mattress. I have used these guidelines to make fitted sheets for a pack-n-play with great results. The sheets are fast and easy, and they work up great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2004-08-27

I am a beginner, when it comes to sewing, I have not made anything from this book yet, but I have read through it, and I foune the instructions easy to follow, and all the basics for decorating a nursery are in here. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to make their own nursery decor.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginning sewers.......2003-02-03

This book really is quite good for beginner sewers. The directions are clear and pictures are good to help you along. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to learn more about sewing and make some nice things for a nursery.

      4 out of 5 stars Sew Easy.......2000-03-30

This book is an excellent tool to use in decorating a baby's room. I used it for our first baby's room because I was dissatisfied with the quality of items on the market for crib sets, in particular. As the name implies, it is for beginners, taking you through the steps one at a time, with illustrations along the way. The color pictures come in very handy while sewing and to gather ideas for your nursery.
