Book Description

In this pioneering publication, Winterthur's renowned quilt collection is presented through dazzling color photographs that showcase rich fabrics and skillful needlework techniques. The letters of twenty-three-year-old Mary Remington, a dedicated quilt maker, and the extraordinary whitework quilt she made in 1815—the only known example of an American quilted coat of arms—provide themes for the book, which looks at the quilts through the lives of their makers. Among the reproductions included—many are being seen here for the first time—are quilts that express religious faith or commemorate marriages and other family connections; quilts in support of political candidates, made by women who could not vote; quilted bedspreads with matching quilted valances and dressing-table covers pictured in room settings; and much more.

This exquisite presentation provides a rare opportunity to view the strengths of the Winterthur quilt collection—highlighting examples from the period of the early American republic—and to understand how the economics and politics of the time affected quilt materials and design in the early nineteenth century.

4 out of 5 stars Historical perspective on quilting focusing on the collection of H. F. DuPont @ Winterthur.......2007-06-05

My wife is a "quilter". While I was on the East Coast attending a family reunion, one of my cousins, with whom I was staying, asked if I wanted to join her in a tour of Winterthur, close to where she lives. I accepted the invitation and totally enjoyed it especially the quilt collection there. I am not a quilter myself - there are some males interested in and "artists" in this art form, but I have become acquainted with it through my wife's interest in it. When I saw this book, examined it and checked out other's reviews of it, I decided it would make a nice birthday gift for my wife. I liked the fact that it dealt with the history of this art form here in the US, the quilt makers of particular quilts, and the progression of technique in "constructing" them. To me it would appeal to my wife's knowledge of this art form through the collection of the H. F. DuPont family.

5 out of 5 stars A Chance to See Magnificent Quilts from the Winterthur Collection.......2007-03-17

"Quilts from a material world" is a long-awaited opportunity to view some of the finest quilts in Winterthur's collections, but also to have them expertly placed in social, economic, mercantile, and political context by Linda Eaton's well-researched and readable narrative. This book is a must for quilt and fabric historians, American history buffs, and members of the general reading public who are interested in knowing more about American material culture (in both senses of the word "material"). It is an excellent contribution to the study of fabrics and quilts.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and fascinating.......2007-01-26

i have barely had time to savour this book. there is so much to interest quilters and non-quilters that it is hard to know where to start to review.

the photographs of the quilts are wonderful, with lots of details. the textile history is thorough and accurate, including a fascinating section on the different techniques of putting pattern on cloth. the history of the quilters is, yes, fascinating, including letters written by one quilter to her fiance and later husband in the early part of the 19th century.

anyone interested in early america, early manufacturing, and the lives of our forebears will enjoy this book as much as any quilter.

In my opinion this is the BEST book out on making Crazy Quilts. I have four others but this is my favorite. You'll love it.

4 out of 5 stars Good crazy quilting resource.......2007-05-13

Good comprehensive book on crazy quilting -- from basic construction of crazy quilt blocks to stitch diagrams and materials suggestions. Also includes drawings of how stitches would be used in crazy quilt blocks.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Quilting.......2007-04-11

I found this book very helpful in deciding what stitches to embellish my crazy quilt. I thought the books drawings made it easier to visualize how the stitches would look on my pieces. I am new to Crazy quilting and just did'nt know where to start. The book solves that dilemma with useful diagrams and helpful information. This is a most for all serious quilters. My work is getting raves and it is so easy!!! Buy the book, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars a taste of everything!.......2006-05-25

this book has a taste of everything, see what gets your attention. From hand embroidery to marble dying of fabric. I've read this book with almost everything getting my interest.
the only bad part about the book, not enought examples for some of the hand embroidery sections. Other than that, I'll keep going back to this book again and again.

i was disappointed with this book...i was hoping for more designs for which i could use continuous line machine quilting...i do, however, think this is a good book for hand quilting designs.

5 out of 5 stars THE MOST CONCISE, WELL-LAID-OUT QUILTING DESIGN BOOK.......2003-09-13

I have ever encountered. A large 14" x 11", which allows for small, large and cornered designs of various categories including borders, backgrounds, traditional, special shapes, designs from different countries, holiday designs, and much more! The designs are printed ON ONE SIDE ONLY which is extremely helpful when one wishes to use a page on a lightbox, as only one design shows through. The spiraled binding is a superb plus since it enables the pages to be laid out separately for scan or lightbox use. So easy to use, scores of designs to choose from, ECONOMICALLY PRICED (so much more for the money than any other book I have researched).....Ms. Emery has done all of the work to make it easy for us. Thank you, Linda Goodmon Emery, for providing a fine product for quilters.

She breaks down her patterns into chapters based on themes, and she covers it all from mini quilts, to seasonal, or babies, or masculine, or ethnic themes (just to name a few) Additionally the book is spiral bound, larger than normal size AND the patterns are all only on one side of the page. You can't lose with this book!!

5 out of 5 stars the most quilting designs ever in one book.......2002-09-26

I have never seen so many quilting designs in one book, let alone the fact that they are so beautiful. There are designs for every occasion.I love that this book is spiral bound for tracing or copying. There are even measurements for every design which takes out the guesswork of which designs will fit your paticular space. The borders are exceptional and each has a least one center block design to go with it,some have several. If you only bought one design book this one could be the only one you would ever need.

    5 out of 5 stars Quilting designs.......2002-04-17

This is a great book to take you beyond basic quilt designs. All of the borders have the corners drawn out for you, which really makes it easier. The designs are drawn to fit in typical-sized blocks and borders, but I haven't found it quite as useful for whole-cloth quilts. There are lots of patterns for different themes, and I liked the different designs for background and filler quilting. My favorite has to be the birds and worms. I highly recommend this book.

From page one the reader is engaged in the creative process that brings us to the 'look' of quilts that has evaded us. Not only does Ms. Marston identify the character of quilting that has drawn so many of us to the art and, until now, been miising from our quilts.....she invites us into and through the process. Amazingly simple techniques are reviewed and once implemented, make 'nice' quilts.....'remarkable' quilts. This one is for any quilter out there who's quilts need "something" or is contemplating their first heirloom quilt. It has redefined my craft and creativity.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY, a book that understands the hand quilter!.......1998-09-18

From one hand quilter to another, "Quilting With Style" by Gwen Marston and Joe Cunningham is fantastic! It's concise, down to earth, and LOTS of information on the actual hand quilting Designs! It's about time!! They emphasis the importance of the quilting being as beautiful as the piecing or applique of the top itself. What brings a quilt 'to life' and how to choose your designs to accent your quilt top. It's a MUST READ! Karen Bush, Professional Hand Quilter

5 out of 5 stars A must for the art quilter.......2003-06-07

This book is a classic study in taking the leap thinking outside the box (or pattern in this case) while creating quilts. Nancy's book shows how to use your environment to find and create design ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Great book...really shows her influences.......2000-10-15

I think that this book is great for anyone who is interested in Nancy Crow's work...it primarily shows her 80's work but is still good for visuals...the back section shows her influences which will be inspiring for those looking to find something else other than quilts for an influence within their work...worth a peak.
