Product Description

The basis of every reef aquarium is living coral, which depend on symbiotic algae in their tissues. The home coral reef is a careful balance of water and light conditions that nurture beneficial algae, starve noxious algae, and allow myriad other coral reef creatures to flourish. This manual advises on maintaining coral and the creatures that thrive in its environment: sponges, echinoderms, molluscs, crustaceans, and fishes, all of which can be included in a mini-reef aquarium. Many full-color photos. Paperback / 180 Pages / / 1997

2 out of 5 stars Way too technical.......2006-05-11

This book was thoroughly disappointing. Provided OK information, but was entirely too technical in its approach. If you do not have a Ph.D. in biology then do not bother with this book, you will not understand it.

4 out of 5 stars compact reef guide.......2003-11-18

It should be rated at 5 stars but I give only 4 stars because of its technical nature and my beginner's comprehension. After that, it is a compact guide full of useful, hands-on info that helps the hobbyist create their own ideal aquarium environment.

3 out of 5 stars No common name references.......2002-03-23

Don't get me wrong, this book is good, however... while reading the book, it uses mostly the scientific names for everything. It would be nice if after the scientific name, it has a common name in parenthesis, you know, using the names the fish stores use. Other than that, it is a decent book.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars?.......2001-03-27

Yes, 5 stars! Pound for pound (and dollar for dollar) this is one of the best books on marine reef keeping you can buy.

I own several reef and aquarium books. They range from the brilliant, to the not-so-swift-waste-of-money types. The "Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook" by Robert J. Goldstein ranks waaaay up the list, kept from the top only because of its brevity.

This book touches on a LOT of topics, and it covers them in enough detail to really help you understand and apply what you need to keep your reef (or any aquarium) running well. Due to its (somewhat) small size, it does not cover topics in great detail. Depending on what you want, that may or may not be a good thing. There is however, enough information, written in plain English, for any aquarium keeper--from rank beginner, to the Old Man in the Sea--to learn something new.

No, this book doesn't contain the depth of information that one of those $80 marine reef books does. But it contains a wealth of information and will send you well on your way to starting up a reef or maintaining your current reef. Even if you're just looking for an interesting read, you can't go wrong with the "Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook" by Robert J. Goldstein.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2001-01-17

I like the pictures & the info is good for a reef beginner like me. I've had freshwater tanks for years, so the basic salt intro was what I needed & this fits the bill.

You cannot live without this photo album if you observe inshore zooplankton. The black and white photographs are stunning, especially the Crustacea. It is a steal for the price. Every plankton lab. should have a copy. I particularly liked the ovigerous Evadne.

I've always wanted to know what I was seeing when I went to the beach - especially when I began to bring a microscope with me. This book is a good start for people who are curious about the environment around them and want to put names to what they see.

5 out of 5 stars New edition out soon.......2006-10-11

The much awaited new edition of this book should be out by the summer of 2007. The old edition's taxonomy has gotten rather dated. This new edition will be a must for serious marine biologists who want to identify California's wonderfully diverse marine invertebrate fauna.

4 out of 5 stars Great information, a must have for the west coast naturalist.......2000-05-04

Even though the latest edition was published in 1975, Light's manual is still a "must have" for the west coast naturalist. This book contains taxonomic keys and information about the majority of intertidal invertebrate animals that live along the California Coast.

The keys have supplementary illustrations that help the reader figure out what animal is in their bucket, or in the tide pool at their feet.

There are entries that are unavoidably out of date due to the publication date. The reliability and usefulness of the taxonomic keys and supporting information in this book, however, still ring true.

A wonderful reference book to the invertebrates of California.

The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars was that its publication year (1975) is causing its contents to slip out of date.

Anyone up for putting together a new edition?

    Book Description

The Fourth Edition of The Light and Smith Manual continues a sixty-five-year tradition of providing to both students and professionals an indispensable, comprehensive, and authoritative guide to Pacific coast marine invertebrates of coastal waters, rocky shores, sandy beaches, tidal mud flats, salt marshes, and floats and docks. This classic and unparalleled reference has been newly expanded to include all common and many rare species from Point Conception, California, to the Columbia River, one of the most studied areas in the world for marine invertebrates. In addition, although focused on the central and northern California and Oregon coasts, this encyclopedic source is useful for anyone working in North American coastal ecosystems, from Alaska to Mexico.
More than one hundred scholars have provided new keys, illustrations, and annotated species lists for over 3,500 species of intertidal and many shallow water marine organisms ranging from protozoans to sea squirts. This expanded volume covers sponges, sea anemones, hydroids, jellyfish, flatworms, polychaetes, amphipods, crabs, insects, snails, clams, chitons, and scores of other important groups. The Fourth Edition also features introductory chapters on marine habitats and biogeography, interstitial marine life, and intertidal parasites, as well as expanded treatments of common planktonic organisms likely to be encountered in near-to-shore shallow waters.

From large travel bags to small roll-style purses, these 20 patterns include all the carryall styles a quilter could desire. They range from traditional to shabby chic, from retro to contemporary. Most important, each one showcases the exquisite workmanship and close attention to detail that are the hallmarks of designer and best-selling author Mary Jo Hiney. She offers instruction on how to make pockets, both inside and out; how to put in zippers; how to attach handles; and how to add liners and bindings for the perfect finish. Among the standouts: a brocade bag to hold knitting supplies, a 60's-style piecework bucket bag, a clutch with traditional quilt block appliqué, and a small wool dachshund-shaped purse that uses Mary Jo's signature "quiltagami" technique. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.

                  3 out of 5 stars I love purses.......2007-06-02

This is not a book for beginners. The instructions are for experienced quilters or sewers. I love all the ideas and I am going to try to make each bag. I bought this book without reading the reviews or else I might have had second thoughts on purchasing this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful Designs - NO In-Process PHOTOS!.......2007-02-27

The bags are very beautiful, and the photos of the finished bags clear. The finished photos show front, back, inside, and side gussets well. However, a warning is necessary. THERE ARE NO - NONE - PHOTOS OF IN-PROCESS BAGS. This makes the instructions really difficult to understand. The short instructions for special techniques (applique's various methods, beading, and hand embroidery stitches) are also too short for a first time introduction. Most of the bags have medium to simple construction methods. An experienced sewer should not have much trouble figuring it out, even though the instruction are hard to follow.

An exception is the bag on the cover, which uses about 20 applique pieces. It is the most complex bag in the book. I think making a pattern first using typing paper or muslin would be a REALLY good idea for this bag. Some of the patterns are for the back-side of the fabric. Some of the patterns are on a fold (half sized). The patterns use different seam allowances. I think it would be IMPOSSIBLE NOT to make several mistakes if you were cutting the fabric first. Make sure the patterns are marked with seam allowances and the color of the fabric as well as front or back-side labeled. Glue or tape the pattern pices together to make sure the seam allowances will work. This pattern calls for silk and velvet or microfiber, which are rather expensive, and aggrevates the problem if the cut pieces do not fit together.

I still gave this book 5 stars because, I am not sure if the complex designs of certain bags COULD have been explained simply (short of including full-sized, correctly labeled patterns), and because the workmanship of the bags in the photos are excellent. The color choices and materials are also well thought out. You can just copy the fabric choices as is and get a great bag out of it. For most books on bags, I have to substitute the fabrics on many of the bags because the color choices are bad or the fabrics are too weak for the size and use of the bag.

                  1 out of 5 stars Horrible directions!.......2006-10-22

I am not surprised to see the last person's opinion. I am an intermediate to advanced sewer and just wasted $40 in fabric on one of her patterns. I just left a class at the local quilt shop today where we were working on one of Hiney's purse patterns. The teacher and 2 other quilt shop staff present couldn't figure out her instructions for certain elements of the purse. They had caught mulitple other errors in the instructions though and noted them for the class. Don't waste your money on such a sloppy pattern designer and writer.

                  1 out of 5 stars VERY disappointed.......2006-10-20

I'm an accomplished quilter and belong to a bag of the month class consisting of 18 people. We have made 7 bags from this book and all but 1 have major problems with the directions, i.e. wrong measurements, etc. The quilt shop owner contacted the author who blamed the publisher. I would not recommend this book nor will I ever buy another book from this author.

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas for creative purses........2006-03-11

I haven't actually made any of the bags yet but I have read over the patterns and instructions and it looks like Mary Jo has done a good job in designing these bags. The book is very pretty to look at and makes you want to jump in and use up some of those quilting scraps to make a new purse.
