Best how-to cabinet making book........2003-07-20
If you are new to cabinet making, this is the one book you should have to learn how to make frameless cabinets.
Levine has a system which may not be for everyone, but it is easy to understand, and he explains things with a clarity that is hard to find in the woodworking world. Here is what I like:
1) He explains basic dimensions and layouts for kitchen cabinets. There are no plans, but there are lots of photos and illustrations.
2) His coverage of European hinges (Grass) and Accuride drawer slides will be invaluable if are just learning how to install this hardware.
3) Ditto for plastic laminate.
4) In the field of woodworking, I think Levine is just about unparalleled at taking complex information and explaining it with great clarity.

Not a very good book at all.......2000-08-17
I found the book to be very outdated and full of useless information. The book does not even give you any useable plans for constructing your own cabinets. The material choices and assembly procedures are so out dated that an extreamly large amout of wood and money would be wasted. I would not recomend this book to anyone.
Great Euro style cabinets.......2000-04-03
After checking out all of the kitchen cabinet making books I could find from local libraries, I found this one to give me the simplest foolproof way of making cabinets. I am planning to use this book to make my kitchen cabinets. It is based on the Euro style cabinets, ones without face frames. He also has an accompianing video which is also very good.

Perfect for ideas.......2001-01-19
This little book is well worth every penny. The pictures are gorgeous, and the breadth of ideas is incredible. Even if you just need occasional "help" in deciding what to wear or how to spice up an outfit, Chic Simple Accessories will help.
Outstanding! One of the best accessory books available........2000-11-20
At first glance, this may seem like merely a pretty picture book, but if you take the time to look closer, you will find advice for building a classic, comfortable, versatile wardrobe through the wise use of accessories.
My favorite part of this book is when the authors take one outfit (say, white blouse and black pants) and show it with different accessories. This tactic really illustrates what a difference accessories can make. It also makes me look at my own wardrobe and think how I can achieve different "looks" with accessories rather than buying different clothes.
The other gem of this book is the accessory checklist at the back of the book, divided into categories: basic gear, ornamentation, work, evening, summer, and winter. These two pages are worth the price of the book alone.
Accessories for the Librarian.......1997-06-25
I had been wanting for some time to break out of the dowdy Librarian mode. I decided to start my transformation with a book on the basics on accessories and Accessories (Chic Simple) fit the bill perfectly. It has wonderful pictures which enhance the copy making it more understandable and interesting. It also has information about where to purchase every item in the book and how to maintain the items after purchase. It tries to stay with the classics and tells you how to handle the trends. After reading this book, I feel ready to make accessory purchases that will make me look and feel confident

Storage.......2007-01-21
Storage is not a step-by-step how-to book. It will not give a to do list of things to make one's storage problems suddenly vanish. Instead it is a small set of suggestions divided up my topic (either by storage device or by room). Most often the book gives multiple suggestions for a type of storage problem instead of one correct way. I liked this approach to the problem; it is okay to be different when tackling storage problems.
Storage for all its gloss and full color photography does have some practical advice about storage and de cluttering. What I liked best about the book is how it gives many different options to accomplish a storage problem without pushing one option over another.
Could have been better.......2000-05-12
I was looking foward to reading this little book but was somewhat disappointed. While the pictures, quotes, and interesting diaglog were amusing as usual with Chic simple books, it didnt' give absolute information about the best ways to store things.

pedestrian interior design book.......2000-08-30
This book is ideal in affirming what we already know about interior design. It talked about suitability, proportion, textures, light, & other components that form the backbone of modern interior design. It also talked about coffee table, chairs, lighting, & other items that play pivotal role in our home decorations. As the book progressed, it wandered into sideline areas such as future technolgy that is growing in popularity in shaping our home. I would prefer the author not covering this point but expanding into other areas that mattered more to interior design enthusiasts. What I'm finding this book enjoyable to read, however, would be quotations from famous architects & designers but why Candice Bergen?? I also enjoyed reading the origin of various types of coffee tables, the rule of thumb for the height of various chairs, & so forth. Examples illustrated thru the mean of pictures are nowhere sufficient but then again, readers should be reminded that this book is merely 190 pages with big fonts & overblown pictures at times. It is indeed an easy book to read & readers are recommended to loan it from library to read it rather than buying it as you are better off spending the money on other better interior design books.
Good effort but falls short.......2000-08-20
I have generally enjoyed the Chic Simple series, but was disappointed with this book. It attempt to cover a very broad range of topics, from space and light, through furnishings, to technology and environmentalism. Trying to be comprehensive in 175 pages leads to shallow treatment.
On the plus side, "Home" introduces basic sylistic principles, succinctly lays out the evolution of interior design through the 20th Century, and sums up all the elements you should consider when laying out a space: form, color, texture, function, light, etc. On the minus, the succinctness is carried into discussions of chairs, tables, beds and hardware--two pages on each, chairs getting a bit more. While other Chic Simple books enumerate alternatives, here only basic principles are given ("If the room allows, there should always be one oversize table.") The section on "Smart House" technology has not aged well, and the "Whole House" environmental section doesn't fit with the overall style-oriented emphasis of the book.
Still, for someone like myself who has not thought systematically about how to decorate their house and is looking for an overview of the basic elements that will shape the decision, this is a reasonable introduction. Little jewels of examples are tucked in most photos, and quotations from reknowned architects and designers help put the reader in the right frame of mind to make decorating choices. Worth borrowing from a friend and spending a few hours with.

But not the worst book ever!
As a former interior designer, I still have a fondness for books about decorating and design. But this book will not be a keeper on my shelf.
Nicely packaged as to be expected of the Chic line. But so sterile, bare, boring--who says stylish has to be so basic?
In their wonder bread world, the Chic people forgot that the chicest looks of all revolve around creativty, texture, color--take a risk! Unless you live in a loft somewhere, there is nothing homey or comfortable about this house. It is like a museum--look but don't touch. Just fill your eyes with more visual candy and run, don't walk to grab the latest issue of House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens or Architectural Digest. They are sure to be more idea-inspiring.
Disappointing!.......1999-12-18
I own several of the Chic Simple books and am a big fan of them for their practicality and relevance. However, I was not at all impressed with "Home". I found the photographs to be boring, abstract and impractical. Many of the styles shown are very bare, almost forbidding. Additionally, too much of the content focuses on bizarre styles completely impractical for most people. If you need ideas on how decorating your home (as I do), this is not the book with which to start.
Intelligient, insightful and indispensable........1999-03-07
As an interior designer I found Chic Simple to be one of the most important books in my library. Their information is inspirational, giving the reader an outline to color in with their own personal brush. The book is a unique approach to design and decorating.

Excellent book on packing.......2002-08-06
As with all Chic Simple books, this little book is filled with good advice, beautiful pictures, interesting quotes and a nice attitude. It addresses questions such as what should I bring, how much should I bring and why should I bring anything at all? It also discusses different kinds of bags, and when they are appropriate. Not only is this book about packing for travels - it is about how to pack to commute to work or going to the gym as well.
Details about how to pack clothes and how to build a travel wardrobe are also included, plus some very good lists to use as starting points, as well as a packing chart to personalize.

This little book is packed with useful information.It contains tips a traveller can really use- from selecting the right bag,to avoiding wrinkles. The photos selected are a visual treat, and the book is beautifully designed.

Not a lot of substance but very entertainng.......2000-03-10
Like many of the other Chic Simple Books (I own 6 or 7 now - some wonderfully helpful, some just fun to look at) this one is filled with witty quotes, fashionable observations and pretty pictures. However, for those of you seeking advice on how to deal with the mess your desk may be, this is not the book for you. There are fine descriptions of the origin of the word "credenza", instructions on how to make your own paper, facts, figures, statistics & even a history of the evolution of paper. But in fact, no real instructions for dealing with the real issue: your desk. I love these books for their design quotient, the facts are interesting (reminding you to take special note when setting up a filing system in China, as they have no alphabet...this is important in my life-NOT), and the quotes add spice to my day, but if you are looking for real solutions you might be better off with the other condescending, no price tag is too high in the sake of style Diva, Martha, than with this book. The Chic Simple "Components" as they call them are attractive, and appeal to a rather impulsive urge, but are really just pretty ways to seperate you and your money. Try their books on clothing & wardrobes, they are VERY helpful.

A great coffee table or bedside table book.......2000-01-05
Pretty pictures, excellent photography, lots of neat things to look at, visually stimulating--this is a great book to leave out as a conversation piece. Or to thumb through before bed, very relaxing!
But as far as the knowledge dispersed, it is nothing new. Or maybe I just know my percales and thread counts and different fill fibers better than the average shopper?
Like the average shopper even cares?
If you want a how to guide...this ain't it! If you want eye candy, feast your eyes on this!

Chic and simple as always ..........2002-08-05
This is a Chic Simple component which deals with kitchen equipment. What do you really need, and how do you use it? The book covers such questions as how you find the perfect knife, the perfect measuring cups and so on.
As with any Chic Simple book, it does also have interesting quotes and miscellaneous facts in the margin and elsewhere (with headlines such as "Cinema Cuisine"). The book includes some recipes and "how to"-instructions, too. However, this is very basic, and you probably will not need this book if you have a good cookbook. On the other hand, it does have the delightful attitude that permeates all other Chic Simple books that I have (and I have almost all), so if you like that, this could be a worthwile addition to your collection of Chic Simple books.

Hmm...is this really necessary?.......2000-01-05
A pretty book in the Chic tradition--the ultimate bathroom book, a great gift for a housewarming or bridal shower, more eye candy to display, but as far as usefulnes...? Who doesn't know the difference between soap and bath gel? Or what to stock up on or bring when traveling...kind of common sense don't ya think?
And minus the photos it would be one boring book. Pretty pointless.
If you are a sucker for cool pictures like I am, and love the glossy style the Chic series is noted for, then this is a great addition to your growing library. If not? Pass on it!
