How to Do Wreaths If You Think You Can't (How to Arrange Florals If You Think You Can't) (How to Arrange Florals If You Think You Can't)
ASIN: 0517887762
Release Date: 1996-11-05 |
Book Description
Both a how-to craft book and a decorating guide, Wreaths offers 51 projects for delightful wreaths--complete with step-by-step instructions--honoring the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Designed for use throughout the year, these wreaths are made from materials inspired by their locations: i.e. an oak leaf and acorn wreath as a homage to the nation's capital; cranberries for Massachusetts; and golden wheat to symbolize Oklahoma. Full color.
Customer Reviews:
best book on wreaths.......2006-08-17
I bought 4 other books on wreaths by other authors, and this one is the most inspirational one with clear directions. Not fussy. We turn to it every year when it is time to decorate the house for Christmas.
Beauty!.......2005-06-28
I am not from the United States and still adored this book. The photographs are amazing and the ideas are astonishing and so symbolic. Martha and one of her staff members embarked to create a wreath for each of the states, and each wreath reflects some natural element of the state in question. Whether it's wheat, moss, succulents, palm leaves, pinecones, tumble weeds, sunflowers, grasses, pine branches or sea shells the ideas will inspire you. Martha's introduction shows a photo of Martha on the balcony of the White House where she writes about her exhilerating experience decorating the White House with Hilary Clinton for Christmas one year and how that very American event inspired the idea for the series of wreaths and the book. This is a must-have for any Martha fan!!
Great American Wreaths: The Best of Martha Stewart Living.......2000-10-14
Just as Martha's magazine is a joy of visual delights, this book get's the creative juices flowing. Divided into wreath making by types: wire wreaths, living wreaths, gathered wreaths etc. it is also written with a focus of wreaths presented by the 50 States with the bounties of each state proudly displayed in stunning wreath form. Maybe because it is fall and the beautiful changing leaves in Minnesota make me feel all homey, I am stirred to actual creation. Unlike some of Martha's projects when I say to myself, "yeah, sure...." I truly believe I can do these! This would make a wonderful birthday or Holiday gift to anyone who loves visual delight or poking in nature. "It's a good thing."
Gorgeous, easy to make ideas for every season!.......1999-08-25
This book is the easiest I have ever read on wreath making! They have several gorgeous wreaths that are truly amazing! I recommend this book to anyone who loves wreaths, Martha, or easy crafts.

Wreaths come in many varieties; they certainly need not be limited to Christmastime or to front doors. Handmade Wreaths is filled with fetching projects appropriate to every season and every room. Welcome the spring with a rosebud heart or a swag of pussy willow; usher in the summer with a circle of living herbs or a cloud of artemisia; celebrate the harvest with an array of Indian corn or country wheat; ring in the holidays with a wreath of jingle bells or ivy and pomegranates. The 28 projects are easy and good-looking, all crafted from readily available supplies. Some even pass up plant materials in favor of seashells, buttons, or gingerbread cookies. --Amy Handy

Customer Reviews:
Great book for beginners.......2001-08-14
I have never made wreaths before, so I enjoyed that this book gave great basic tools for starting and explanations of the wreath elements. The book has wonderful ideas and explains clearly how to make each wreath.
From easy to difficult, these wreaths will please you!.......2000-10-25
I love this wreath book! The instructions are well written and easy to understand, but the photos - ah - the photos! The photos elegantly, yet simplistically illustrate each and every wreath in the book. The book also adds in variations you could do to some of the wreaths. It's a keeper!

Book Description
A cutting-edge design book for small apartments, Studio Apartments: Big Ideas for Small Spaces introduces the reader to the joys of small space living, whether in simple studios, tiny one-bedrooms, or more complex arrangements where two small rooms or studios are joined to form a larger but still compact living area.
Studio Apartments examines in detail how more than twenty architects have created remarkably refined and varied living spaces within small confines. A master bedroom can be carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then concealed behind a frosted-glass wall. A kitchen can evolve from a closet. A single long room with windows only at its end can become a warm and inviting living space. Here are some of the freshest, most original approaches to creating a real home within spaces smaller than 1,000 square feet, and in some cases less than 500 square feet.
The twenty-four beautifully photographed apartments are presented complete with floor plans, gorgeous before and after photographs, and clear text that leads the reader through the design process and highlights the "big idea" that makes each apartment distinctive.
With Studio Apartments, an apartment dweller with an eye for style can transform their dreams into reality. In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. With photos and case studies including floor plans of more than twenty studios under 800 square feet each, readers are shown solutions to the typical problems architects are asked to solve: creating sleeping alcoves, efficient kitchens, appealing bath and dressing areas, adequate storage, and work and entertainment areas.
Actual projects show how architects and interior designers extract maximum style and usage from small, urban apartments: a master bedroom is carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then hidden behind a frosted glass wall; a closet becomes a cook's kitchen, and a single long room with windows at one end is transformed into a warm and inviting living room. The "big idea" that makes each apartment special is highlighted in designs ranging from traditional to casual modern to cutting edge.In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. Customer Reviews:
Very Modern.......2005-08-24
All of the spaces shown except one(Which also happens to be the only one under 800 sq ft) are very modern. Over all the pictures and layouts were nice, but to me kind of cold. I think it mentions casual modern, didn't see too much of that! If you like looking at ultra modern and expensive, larger than 1000 sq ft lofts, then buy this book!
Modern ideas for small and nice spaces.......2005-02-12
I thought the styles and ideas are wonderful, if you have modern taste with creative resources to pay for the remodeling of your studio apartment. Granted, most the apartments displayed were from individual that could afford to spend a good sum of money to remodel, however, I was able to get good ideas to re-decorate my studio apartment in South Beach (Miami Beach, Florida). The benefit to buying this book was that I did not have to buy 10-20 Architecture magazines in order to acquire ideas. I was able to duplicate a bath room in this book, without "breaking the bank"-if you have the time to research and compare costs.
For example, I shopped on E-bay(vessels sinks/best prices for modern fixtures and sinks: www.aquaimports.com), Home Depot(only the bath tub)and "leg work" for the bathroom tiles (Modern little colorful tiles) (Spanish Tiles Corp, located in Miami, Fl)-called many contractors. Please remember before starting any project, check with your buildings and local zoning requirements, to under-go the projects seen in this book. If you are wondering, no I am not rich, but I did "cash in" my 401K in order to buy the apartment and remodel it, it was better than leaving it in the "stock market."
A book for guys...........2002-02-17
Okay, maybe I'm biased or old-fashioned or both, but I don't find the apartments shown in BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL SPACES-STUDIO APARTMENTS attractive. The authors are both men with a great deal of knowledge about design, and I am sure their ideas will appeal mostly to men.
The examples shown are minimalist, modern, angular, and seem to belong to hard-working types who drop in only to sleep. For the most part these apartments are lacking in color which is the single most important element in decorating as far as I am concerned. Although the authors show some colorful ideas in their section on "cozy" apartments, for the most part their idea of making a place more homey seems to be adding books on shelves, chunky ashtrays, and sports trophies. In addition to cold, angular furniture and clunky "knickknacks", the minimalist rooms are often without curtains and/or have walls that are downright stark. One idea of "lightening" shows a curtain with a "porthole" in it that allows one to "look out" at the view.
If you're a guy looking for a book on how to decorate an appartment with a modernist "masculine" look this may be the book for you. One other note: the book was printed in China and the photographs looks like those in 1950s era books even though the publication date is 2000.
Beautiful and creative.......2001-10-17
This is one of my favorite design books. I notice some other reviewers have complained that the apartments shown in this book are beyond their budget (alas, mine too). However, the concepts can be applied with less spendy solutions, and let's face it: a book filled with photos of ordinary spaces would lack the magic that this book possesses and would inspire fewer people (if any) to dream about their own space.
Inspirational.......2001-10-16
Excellent combinations of photos and drawings to show off the features of these fantastic units. Before and after plans illustrate how design potentials can be optimized and achieved...

Book Description
In the academic year 2000-2001, Yale professor and New York City based architect Peggy Deamer led two innovative courses: first, a focused seminar on the state of contemporary residential design; second, a creative studio offering house designs that drew on the discoveries of the seminar. This book, the second in a series documenting work at the Yale School of Architecture, combines work from both courses in a thoughtful and provocative study of the state of the house at the turn of the millennium.
Deamer introduces the volume with an essay on three issues vital to a discussion of millennial design: newness, uniqueness, and design innovation. Designs of visiting seminar critics -- Steven Holl, Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, William McDonough, LOT/EK, Winy Maas, and Jacques Herzog -- are showcased along with descriptive and analytical texts. Work from the studio course is divided into various themes explored by the students: image, standardization and modularity, networks and diagrams. The hybrid quality of this volume -- designs by practicing architects and students; observation and interpretation -- reflects debates and issues at the heart of early-twenty-first-century architecture.

Book Description
From the founder of Rental Decorating Digest Tammy Jo Schoppet( http://www.RentalDecorating.com ), "A simple down to earth, crash course in interior design..." From a personal color scheme to working within the 3 Phases of Decorating, this do-it-yourself book is a "must read" for every first time renter! Perfect for both new and seasoned renters who are looking to create a temporary, stylish living space while staying within rental guidelines!
Customer Reviews:
It works for me!.......2004-04-29
This book worked for me. I must say it is perfect for renters who don't know where to begin with a decorating project. Myself being one of those people, I was able to read through the book quickly (which I am thankful for...who needs another college book to read)and impliment the suggestions. Since the book was short and to the point, I actually took the time to DO what it said. Even though this book lacked colorful pictures ( it refers you to their Rental Decorating Digest website), I felt the instructions where far more than enough to guide me through my decorating project.
My practical application: I drew a floor plan, arranged my furniture, added modern style, matched colors (using a pillow) & chose window treatments...the best part, I didn't spend a fortune. That alone is a thumbs up for me.
Readability : Quick & Easy
Usability: Straight forward & do-able
Documenting the obvious.......2004-04-12
Unless you're a 19 year old living alone for the first time, this book won't help you. First of all, it's tiny (like a skinny flip book)....it took me about 45 minutes to read cover to cover. $25.00 is way too much money for a something the size of of a brochure. Secondly almost everything in it is common sense or something you could discover by reading the labels on things at Sears. There were no useful suggestions on style or picking out furninshings and only a few real guidelines for dealing with all the little things that you can't change in a rental unit, like paint, hanging pictures, ugly carpet etc.
If you don't know the names of common things designed to go into your house, like "curtain rod" or "drapery" you might want to get this book as a very basic primer on where to begin. Otherwise this book is a complete waste of time.
