For the truly dedicated crafter, a complete course book........2002-11-18

The first thing you should know before buying this book is that this is not one of those ready-made, quick 'n' easy project books: you will be making your boxes entirely from scratch, section by section. Obviously a lot of work for something that you may only intend as the holder for a "real" present, but that is the point. These lavish, artistically crafted containers ARE worthy gifts in themselves, and showpieces of your skills from more than one area of crafting.
The author starts with lists of basic necessities for cardboard box crafting, detailing types of cardboard needed for various parts of boxes and glues, tools, etc. Next, there is a Techniques section, with step-by-step illustrations of the various steps in boxmaking, such as batting, wrapping, assembling, and lining strips. A similar section on ribbon embroidery techniques and other embellishments follows. These instructions are basic enough to serve as valuable references, and someone who has never attempted ribbon embroidery before can conceivably do a decent job if he/she pays careful attention.

The "real" fun comes in the largest section, the projects lavishly photographed and laid out in two-page spreads. These boxes are arranged from beginners skill level at the beginning, to the advanced crafter level at the end. Each project uses new box building skills that build upon the skills practiced in the last project.

I know this all sounds extremely complicated and exhausting; but I have found it to be worth it due to the fabulous results. There are scalloped, diamond shaped, and heart-shaped boxes of various sizes at the introductory level alone. If you decided to stop there, you would already have some beautiful victorian-inspired treasures that are totally unique from any prefabricated craft store box, many with hinged and fitted lids, lined in velvet or silky materials and padded sumptuously for a feminine feel -- and you would not have to spend more than an hour or so of total work. But mere boxes are just a starting point. Further along are a pincusion shelf with two drawers, a teapot, a crescent moon, a 12 inch doll's travel wardrobe case, and more.

If I had to nitpick some cons I could mention that it was a little inconvenient to have to spend time at the copiers enlarging the box patterns. The only other drawback is the time you will spend shopping for just the right fabrics and notions to decorate your finished products -- which, after all, is one of those drawbacks that plagues many other crafts as well, including quilting and making clothes. So, if you are already involved in some other area of crafting, you may have some of what you need already lying about.

Because of the involved and time consuming nature of this discipline, I have sadly had time to devote to learning only a few of the beginner's boxes and one more advanced project, a romantic keepsakes box with a drawstring pouch for a top instead of a lid. This particular box has been variously enlarged and reduced to fit the size of intended birthday, shower and Christmas gifts, changing color schemes and notions to reflect the occasion. It has become a favorite of mine and the recipients often treasure these containers long after they have eaten the chocolates or dried fruit that was inside. So I believe that if you only find one favorite as I have, it will become like a special signature gift that you will learn to make quickly as you practice it.

In a nutshell, this is a great book for those who wish to put time and care into something original and beautiful that will be used as gifts and keepsakes.

Missing directions.......2006-08-26

If you're looking for directions on how to make the beautiful boxes shown here, beware. In several places there are whole missing sections. For example, the list of pieces to make for one box contains 19 items, but only ten of them are shown in the lone diagram. You're on your own to figure out how the others go together.

Also, the writing is often muddy. Some explanations are clumsily written.

But the pictures are pretty.

The boxes in this book are quite attractive. Construction technique is a little iffy (ie squareness is not assured through joinery, just by clamping it together and fiddling with it), but acceptable. However, the box that I built from it had incorrect dimensions in the cutting list, so the carefully grainmatched drawer pieces were too small for the hole. Not cool. There were other examples where it's clear that no-one made the boxes from the descriptions to confirm the instructions.
I would recommend the book more for the concepts than the details.

The Art of Making Elegant Wooden Boxes.......2000-04-08

I found this book to very good on explaning how to make different kinds of joints, hinges, and box desings. It gives you many good desings to work off of and shows you how to use your tools properly. One thing that I did not like about the book was that it just shows you how make these boxes by just using power tools, but never tells you how to make them by just using hand tools, even though they do encourage it.

Great presentation, weak content.......2002-08-13

This book is full of exceptinal work! Unfortunately, it is not as technical as I thought it would be. In my opinion, it was written more as a showcase of the work it presented. It did very little in the way of explaining such fundamentals as how to select the wood for your project, or guide the reader in honing their own design and technique. If you are interested in learning the art of box making this is not the book for you. I would suggest Box-Making Basics: Design, Technique, Projects by David M. Freedman, which I purchased along with this book.

There's no denying that Lydgate knows how to put together a gorgeous book. The jewelry boxes (all of them the work of other artists) are absolutely stunning - just don't try to follow the directions.

For John Russell's "Multi-Part Cross Box" the _entire_ instructions are as follows:

* The bodies of the central cross-shaped structure and the four corner boxes are all made from 1/4" pine. Glue together using simple butt joints.
* Glue squares of 1/8"-thick plywood across the entire dimension to serve as lid liners and bottoms. Because the exterior surfaces will be veneered, the seams will not be visible.
* Glue and veneer the body and lid of each segment as a single unit. Slice apart.
* Thin sheets of pine inside each box hold the lid snugly in place. Line with ultrasuede. Finish box with spray lacquer.

Gee whiz, is that all I have to do? As I said, these are the directions in full, verbatim. I did not leave anything out, or put anything into my own words. If you can build something from those sketchy instructions, buddy, you don't need the book in the first place.

Bottom line: this is an elegant coffee-table book, loaded with gorgeous photos of other people's art. But it will not show you how to make anything.

A showcase of beautiful woods made into beautiful boxes.......1998-07-19

Tony Lydgate presents us with a gallery of fine art. The book comprises a ten page introduction to making wooden jewelry boxes, then the art begins.

The bulk of the book is made up of photos and construction details of 30 boxes from 25 woodworkers. The boxes range from classic simplicity, to the curving organic, to the highly complicated. They are all lovely to look upon and to wonder at.

The third section is a gallery of 10 artworks but without the instructional graphics of the main section. These boxes reflect a higher level of constructional difficulty and imagination. They range from serenely beautiful to outrageous.

I just bought this book by mail at a closeout. I haven't tried any of the patterns, but the designs disappointed me. They look like they are from the 1970's. There is not one box in the book that inspired me enough to read the whole description or even consider going to the trouble of making it. I'm glad it was only five bucks.

Confidence Building Directions, Inspiring Work.......2000-02-04

Excellent woodworking comes from doing things in the proper sequence with the proper materials and tools. Andrew Crawford creates boxes of incredible perfection and beauty. These jem-quality pieces are inspiring, especially when he deconstructs his methods and makes them understandable. Step-by-step books can be tiresome and limiting but Crawford's brief, yet complete, directions accompanied by good photographs and clear drawings build confidence in the reader.
