Book Description
Ralph and Terry Kovel, America's foremost antiques experts, have written a book with a difference about our most popular pastime -- collecting. Whether it is a shelf lined with old toys or a houseful of Art Deco furniture, everyone has a favorite collection.
Kovels' Know Your Collectibles is the ultimate guide to "young antiques" -- collectibles less than one hundred years old.
With hundreds of photographs and line drawings, in-depth text, several glossaries, and an extensive subject-by-subject bibliography, this book provides important information you can't find anywhere else. Each chapter of
Kovels' Know Your Collectibles begins with general advice on how to locate, preserve, and protect your collectibles. The chapters cover a wide variety of objects, including ceramics, dinnerware and art pottery, furniture, glass, jewelry, metal, lamps, clocks, toys, paper, tins, advertising material, and old store collectibles.
The Kovels tell you how to recognize the value and improve the condition of your collectibles. They provide a wealth of information about individual manufacturers and designers, patterns, styles, artists' marks, and historic curiosities. Whether they are talking about common household objects or rare pieces of recognized value, the Kovels tell both beginning and experienced collectors what they want to know about their most cherished collectibles.

Just ordered another one........2003-04-14
I just ordered another copy of this book for a friend who keeps borrowing mine. Well read, and well liked, especially by our friends who are just starting to collect and furnish thier own homes.
Good introduction to the world of collectibles.......2000-10-26
The Kovels are well known in the antiquing and collectible field for their annual price guides. In this book they present an introduction to the world of collectibles including chapters on recognizing furniture styles and periods, pottery, dinnerware, glassware, porcelains, jewelry, lamps, clocks, toys, as well as other miscellaneous items. This is a good generalized grounding in all of these topics, although I felt the book concentrated a little on pottery and porcelains. The book occasionally uses terms before defining them, and as an introductory text could have benefited from the presence of a glossary. However, it has a fairly comprehensive index and the reader is able to find the required definition if they are willing to do a little extra page turning. Manufacturers marks are excellently documented making it a useful reference even beyond the first read-through. The photographs are profuse and of good quality, although all are in black and white and a couple would have done well to have been in color. Over-all this is in my view the best introductory text on modern collectibles (collectibles less than 100 years old) and makes and excellent companion to "Kovels known your antiques".

A well-rounded, complete starting point for antiques........1997-04-29
This is an excellent summary of the wide world of antiques -- from needlework to American Art Pottery, nails and screws to Carnival glass. This is not a price guide; rather, this volume summarizes the whats, whens, wheres, and hows of the material culture of our past. Especially noteworthy is that the information included deals both with American and Canadian objects. The book is organized by material: silver, pewter, needlework, toys, etc. Throughout, quick "expert tips" are printed in all capital letters, making them stand out. Extensive information on changes in style over time, as well as makers' marks, are included.Drawbacks: The book is somewhat dated, in that it covers primarily items popular to collectors in 1973 (the date of the volume reviewed). Missing is information on items such as razors, thimbles, needle cases, etc. Also missing is any information on ivory, bone, and tortoiseshell objects, to name a few. Regardless of these minor shortcomings, this volume will be a valuable addition to the library of antique collectors, historical archaeologists, and any others interested in material culture.

General Info.......2004-06-26
Good general info, but not enough entries or detail. Photos are bad.
Covers a lot of territory.......2003-06-12
Antiques and collectibles covers such a vast array of knowledge, that no one book could ever cover it all. This book is an excellent resource for someone like myself who wants to get his feet wet. I covers a lot of topics lightly. They include: Pottery and Porcelain, Glass, Bottles, Furniture and furniture construction, Lighting Devices, Silver, Pewter, Tinware and Toleware, Clocks, Needlework, Jewelry, Prints, Paintings, and Pictures to Hang, Paper Antiques, Store stuff (that is what they called that chapter), Books, Music, Toys, and other collectible items.
I was interested in learning more about French Provincial furniture, and several other furniture types were covered-briefly. I learned that if you want to get a good deal of information about any one type of item, it is best to consult a book that specializes in that area. A short paragraph, or page or two about something really scratches the surface. Most likely the specific piece you have in mind will not be covered.
This is a great book for general education. After all, you never know what you will stumble on that is of great value, and is ready to be given away. I think collecting is a matter of, if you really like it, then it is for you. It is just as well to know how much it is worth, and where it came from, and how old it is. In a general sense, this book will give that all to you. A nice read for someone like myself who is not seasoned in antiquity.
A lot of museums, historical societies, and collectors helped to provide the information that is in this book. Highly recommended.
Well organized and informative........1998-07-26
This book offers excellent and basic information on a cross-section of antiques as well as odds and ends. It is well organized and easy to read. I started to just scan it but found each section I would begin, too interesting, so I would finish reading that particular section. Worthwhile for the novice and those who are open to picking up some new information.

Good for all levels.......2006-06-30
This book takes you step-by-step of every project. Good and easy to follow pictures and explanation. Couple of the projects even have templates to work with. Outcome always nice and fancy, 100% surprised by the results. Very excited to get the book!

Not just another Idea book.......2007-03-09
This isn't just another idea book-- it's an art primer. It goes beyond rubber stamping, although there are some very good instructions for rubber stamping. You can also explore plastic wrap prints, fabric and salt prints, and marbling to name a few. There's even a section on creative card lettering! This is for exploring many types of art media in card making endeavors. I highly recommend it.
Fabulous Ideas and Presentation.......2005-04-26
I just got this book and it is wonderful! This book is well laid out, with step by step instructions, and lots of pictures. These are not cards for your kids to make. These are cards adults or older children will make that the recipient will keep as treasured keepsakes. Techniques such as marbling, crayon batik, bleach stamping, embossing, teabag folded cards, pop-up cards and calligraphy. Unfortunately that list doesn't do justice to the variety and beauty of the examples and explanations shown in the book.
Book Description
There's something undeniably heartwarming in the old-fashioned and thoughtful gesture of creating and sending a personal note, a romantic card, or a handwritten thank you.
For readers who like receiving such notes as well as sending them, this book is for you. It offers more than 100 unique ideas for creating personalized stationery featuring traditional media, such as using stamps, paint, punches, needle and thread, as well as using the computer to generate monograms, borders and trims, clip art, photographs, and much more.
The stationery examples are simple, yet elegant, and feature a beautiful, fun, and sophisticated range of styles that appeal to everyone, not just skilled crafters. Designs can be made quickly, and can be executed assembly-line style, so that it's easy to make 10 or 20 sheets in one sitting. Most of all, the graceful handcrafted designs will delight the receiver.

clever & crafty card ideas.......2006-09-21
This book had some lovely and unique ideas for stationary and invitations that would be adaptable to most any situation. Some of the ideas are very clever, like the Go Ahead, Pull My Tongue Stationary, in which you pull out a cute dog's tongue to read a message. Others are elegant, and some are just plain fun. There are a projects for the novice, and also for the experienced crafter. Some of the cards use computer graphics and templates, but they can all be downloaded for free. I would definately recommend this book!
Dissapointing.......2006-07-02
This book is very basic with many of the cards looking homemade rather than hand crafted.
I use my computer alongside traditional crafting techniques and was hoping for some original and inspiring ideas. I was dissapointed.
Looking for the plus points. There are some ideas that could be used to a good effect when working with children. Theres a nice envelope design and a clever idea working with fresh flowers.
The idea for the book is excellent however I am afraid I feel it has missed the mark. Sorry.

Once you've poured your creativity into producing a wonderful gift, you can't just use store-bought wrapping--you have to conjure up some glorious packaging to make your presentation truly memorable. And when it's the thought that counts, classy wrapping can make even the most mundane of presents seem like something really special; in fact, sometimes the package becomes a gift in itself.
This idea-filled guide demonstrates wonderful ways to turn all sorts of papers (butcher, specialty, handmade, foil, watercolor, even pretty mass-produced gift wrap), fabrics, paints, and trimmings (ribbons, wire, pipe cleaners, rickrack, natural materials, assorted found objects) into unusual and inventive packaging. Sometimes the supplies make the look with little other involvement needed: simple coppery tissue paper tied with metallic ribbon and bedecked with a satin rose, for instance. Other times the paper itself is the field for creativity--a whole chapter is devoted to painting, texturing, stamping, and even stitching to make eye-catching papers. Still other packages boast imaginative gift tags and package toppers, such as wooden fish, beaded snowflakes, Christmas light bulbs, and a scarf wrapped around glittery white paper adorned with three buttons to suggest a snowman. Directions are good and photos are clear and colorful. It may be more time-consuming to create your own wrappings, but Jill Williams Grover shows us that it's certainly worthwhile. --Amy Handy

please save your money and your talent.......2004-07-25
I have been working in the design field for over 10 years now and I have yet to see a worse ripp off then this author not only are there no directions to her projects, but who would want to engage them selves in anything that turned out so chic and cheesey. I have personally met the author and her family I knew them for quite a while infact and never did I find that she could creatively enhance a project. she has some small skill in putting together junk so it doesn't look so much like junk. butlets face it - it's still junk. not something I would put in my house nor in my clients homes.
I'm disappointed........2003-11-13
This book does have pictures of beautifully and cleverly wrapped gifts. Unfortunately, the directions are sparse and incomplete. Many ideas will take considerable time to complete. Not a beginner's book and not really worth the money. It does have a few simple, pretty, easy suggestions, but if you want ideas for a huge pile of Christmas gifts, buy another book.
This book is great!.......2002-05-12
I can't believe people gave 1 and 2 stars to this book! I own the hardcover edition - it was a bit pricey, but after browsing through it a few times in a bookstore I decided I wanted it for my birthday present - it's so good!
There are a lot of great ideas in the book. They are also inspiring - by looking at the photos I get many ideas of my own. And not all the projects there are difficult to make as some reviewers said.
I own about a dozen books on gift wrapping and gift giving and this one is definitely among the top five.
In a word, this book STINKS.......2002-01-01
I should've heeded the advice of other reviewers. "Beginners" nothing! This book is wonderful if you have a degree in commercial arts, apparently as much money to spend on gift wrap as the gift, and near infinite time to spend wrapping the presents.
The book opens with three pages on how to wrap an ordinary rectangular gift in ordinary fashion. After that, you're on your own for instructions as this book whizzes by at the speed of light! It shows you pretty pictures and offers perhaps four sentences each on how to duplicate them.
One gift actually suggestes pliars and wire cutters to wrap thick wire around the present. How is the recipient supposed to OPEN the darn thing?!
There are two good projects described in here, and I'll describe them both. Get a paint pen and write the recipient's name on an old fashioned large Christmas bulb. Wrap pipe cleaner around the metal end of the bulb and make a curly-q out of it. Looks cute! Second project: Just make the curly-q's out of the pipe cleaner in lots of colors.
If you have extensive resources of money, time, patience, and nothing better to do than spend several hours wrapping one present, this book is for you... in which case I've got a lovely mint condition used copy waiting for you. But if you're looking for clever ideas for gift wrap and some solid instructions, pass up this book in favor of its monetary equivilent in wrapping supplies to experiment with on your own.
Few new ideas.......2000-04-28
Sorry, but I do not agree with the reviews of the other two customers (I chose the book due to these comments!). I received this title last week and I want to sent it back now. I do no find new ideas there. Morever, the instructons are not clear (so beginners, avoid it!) I have bought other books with line-drawings (or photos) explaining the techniques. This book has no more than 6 (perhaps fewer?) line-drawings. There's a part of the book, the one of stamping, that is more interesting than the others, but naturally, I have not bought the book for just one chapter. It does not worth it. I have other books as "Card Crafting", "Greeting Cards with Priscilla Presley", Origami, which are really useful.
