5 out of 5 stars Full of everything you need to know about Jeeps.......2007-05-14

This book has help me with basically everything related to my Jeep. It even introduced me to concepts I never knew about before. Great buy for those interested in Jeeps.

1 out of 5 stars Useless book.......2006-08-17

Just about the most useLESS book I have ever bought. The coverage is way too broad and general. There are little to NO specific areas covered. Just general information that can be obtained in the owners manual that comes with the vehicle. All in all, not even worth taking to the throne room.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, a must have for Jeep owners.......2006-06-09

A great book! Once I started reading it, I just couldn't put it down. Everything you need to know about Jeep performance, history, upgrades, regular maintanence - simply a Jeep hoss of a book. As a mechanic, I enjoyed the book thoroughly. I read it cover to cover in about a week once I actually got my hands on it. A++ I would recommend it to any Jeep enthusiast.

2 out of 5 stars shameless Jeep/Mopar brand promo.......2006-04-15

Not worth your money. It reads like a paid advertisement. Spends way too much time talking about how great the new Jeep vehicles are and how important it is to use geniune mopar parts. Very little actual reference material for the DIY enthusiast or wannabe serious Jeeper. What little reference there is, is for CJs. Seems like something they would hand out at a Jeep dealership.

I don't agree with a lot of what this guy says. What's this about only needing 33" tires at the largest? For me, bigger, sloppier obstacles = more fun = need more traction and clearance = bigger tires.

Take my advice - aftermarket parts are almost always the way to go for price, warranty length, and reliability - don't get your parts or accessories through Chrysler/Mopar if you can help it.

I recommend Jim Allen's books, such as the Jeep 4x4 Performance Handbook. Much better intro to Jeepin'.

2 out of 5 stars More CJ than YJ or TJ.......2006-01-10

The title and cover of this particular book leads one to believe that it really does cover information for the TJ. That is somewhat incorrect. The majority of the book is geared towards the CJ. Not really a problem, just understand that if you have a TJ, this is probably not the book for you.

It is also written with heavy praise for Mopar parts and accessories.

A Chilton's Manual would probably be a better purchase.

this is a good book for learning how to build from a small shed on your property to a barn. gives you all the information and materials.

5 out of 5 stars Top to bottom, inside and out coverage........2007-06-19

This book comprehensively covers all aspects of building a barn, shed or outbuilding yourself; it would also help someone who was planning on having one built for them. It covers everything from top to bottom and inside and out: siting, foundation, framing, roofing, weatherproofing, finishing, electrical and plumbing. It is easy to read and the illustrations are instructive, not merely decoration. Since many of the techniques are used in homebuilding, the book would be of interest to home owners as well.

5 out of 5 stars Provides everything to know bout adding a new barn, shed or garage to a property.......2005-09-05

Co-authors John D. Wagner and Clayton DeKorne's Barns, Sheds And Outbuildings: Plan, Design, Build provides everything to know bout adding a new barn, shed or garage to a property. Over 800 photos and illustrations aid in the process, from choosing an appropriate design for needs and placement to step-by-step photos of the actual construction process. Competing titles focus on options more than construction techniques and tips.

5 out of 5 stars Barns and Sheds and Outbuildings.......2005-09-03

Even though I have been a "do it yourselfer" for many years and have done many refinishing projects in houses I have never built a structure as large as a 14 foot X 18 foot x 11 foot high Saltbox machine shed from basic lumber. The sections on Basic Framing, Roof Framing, and Closing In contained enough detail to be very helpful. I also looked at the Wiring and Plumbing section even though I have completely wired a new house and partially wired other houses. While I would want other sources with more detail I thought the section had some good tips.

Overall, this is a really good book and would use it in conjunction with other more specific Creative Homeowner books such as House Framing, Plumbing, and Wiring.

      5 out of 5 stars A superb, well-illustrated, well-written book.......2002-05-24

This book isn't just about barns and shed; it's about proper building and framing practices for any type building. Sure, you can use what you learn here to build barns and shed-- and there are very complete plans for some lovely projects in the back of the book-- but you could just as easily use this book as a guide to building an addition on your house, or for framing a roof. The illustrations are fantastic; clear, concise, with good captions. The writing overall is very clear and understandable. I recommend this book highly to anyone doing any type of building.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLE STEPS TO STRAIGHTEN YOUR BARN.......2007-09-09

Excellent book on how to tackle serious structural deficiencies of your barn from foundation up to the roof.I think you could use this usefull information on other types of buildings such as older homes and garages. In fact this book will show you how to replace rotted out logs in a log cabin. Many simple pictures and diagrams on how to get it done. Also good basics on how to run water and electric utilities once you square up your building.

5 out of 5 stars not more architectual fluff.......2006-02-22

if you are looking for good, solid, usable information on restoring old barns and the mechanics of their structure, this book is the bible on it. quite detailed and good instructions. the author doesn't just tell you it can be done, but how to do it as well. this book won't help trendy city folk, with no building skills, pick out carpet samples for turning a barn into a home, but it is the number one resource on the structure of barns and making them solid and usable again before changing their purpose. I highly recommend this book.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-02-17

We just purchased a property with an old barn and this book was recommended to us as an initial resource. It has provided a good overview of barn history and guidance for restoration.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on renovating barns!.......2001-10-19

It's easy to say that this is the best book on renovating barns - it's the only one that I know of. But, this book is very, very good. I'm lucky enough to be able to spend much of my time designing new barns and helping clients restore old ones. I'm amazed and embarrassed by how much I learned from this book. Nick Engler presents a good primer on barn design, and then goes to work, explaining in detail how to repair each and every common problem with old barns. If your barn is leaning, if the stone foundation is buckled, if your pole-barn posts are rotting, if your timbers have splintered, if your roof sways, you'll learn what to do to fix the problem and to keep it from happening again.

4 out of 5 stars Just What I Was Looking For.......2000-07-05

This book was just what I was looking for to find plans for a horse barn. It's a resource tool, not a picture book. It would be useful to someone who knows what size and type of structure they want to build and don't know where to find the plans. The authors give a good synopsis of the framing options that a homeowner has when considering building, and pros and cons of each. Also, I reccommend reading the paragraphs about laying out your farmstead.

2 out of 5 stars Looks pretty, but this is NOT a very useful book.......2003-06-03

      [Just over 1.5 stars]

"Building Backyard Structures" is a deceptively good-looking book. Alas, nice color pictures won't help you design and build the shed or other small building you need in your backyard. A more accurate title would be "Plans for Seven Backyard Structures". If you want ANYTHING other than these exact seven plans you'll need to look elsewhere.

The deception starts right at the beginning. The chapters are:
      1. Building Materials
      2. Planning Your Project
      3. Foundations
      4. Framing
      5. Roofing
      6. Siding
      7. Doors and Windows
      8. Utility Shed
      9. Pole Barn
      10. Woodshed
      11. Garbage House
      12. Pool or Patio Shed
      13. Gazebo
      14. Children's Playhouse/Outdoor Toy Storage Shed
and you'd reasonably expect that the first seven chapters would provide a useful framework for creating your own small backyard project. You would be wrong, however.

In Chapter 3 the book illustrates five types of foundations. Unfortunately, the text then only discusses how to work with two of them; if you've got a wooden post or concrete slab project in mind, for instance, you're out of luck.

Chapter 4 is even more disappointing. Rather than tell you what you need to know to frame a shed wall, it merely states that "Local codes and the structure's design will dictate the stud spacing". The chapter goes through the steps of framing in numbered order, but again doesn't tell you enough to know what you're doing. Another quote: "Step 12: Add the Bracing. Walls with plywood sheathing or siding generally do not require additional bracing." There's no further explanation about when this "generally" applies, or why. Moving on to roof framing, the authors once again fall back to "Local building codes and the structure's design are going to dictate the size and spacing of the rafters" -- again, without telling you enough to create or even modify an existing design. Finally, they tell you how to create only bird's-mouth rafters, but then later in the book the plans for two smaller projects use straight rafters and mitered studs, instead.

Chapter 5 talks about five types of roofing materials, but then only discusses how to use two of them -- neither of which are suitable for shallow-pitched roofs -- but then the book doesn't tell you about THAT pitfall, either.

Moving into the specific projects doesn't provide much greater clarity. Each project has a "Materials List", but in the Quantity column the information is often labeled "as required", meaning multiple trips to the building supply store for you. And don't forget that in addition to the "Materials List", there's also "Miscellaneous Materials"; you need all the materials on both lists, plus the materials they've forgotten to put on EITHER list. Completely missing is any list of tools required; you'll have to read the complete chapter for that.

I won't go into all the projects. I'll just mention a few problems, and hope that provides enough insight into this book's suitability for your purposes. Do note, though, that NONE of the seven projects tell you how or why the structure's design will dictate foundation choice, stud spacing, rafter configuration, or roofing material selection. They just present each plan as if all these questions had already been answered.

In the Pole Barn project the illustration shows a door made with 2x4 battens without diagonal bracing, and the text then says "Refer to Chapter 7 for information on making and hanging a board-and-batten door." But Chapter 7 only shows how to make a door with 1x4 battens with diagonal bracing, and only how to install a pre-hung door.

In the Garbage House project, you'll need a router and four different router bits. No other part of the book mentions a router, how to use it, or why it might be required for a backyard structure. This project also requires you to assemble lattice from scratch, conveniently failing to mention that you can buy the stuff, pre-made, at any home center.

Finally, the Pool Shed project includes a tile top, and just has three paragraphs that literally say "install the tile" and very little else. There's no information about what tools are required other than a tile cutter. Nor do the components (tiles, cement backer board, thinset mortar) show up on either the "Materials List" or "Miscellaneous Materials" for this project. (The cement backer board and thinset mortar are my additions; the text doesn't mention them at all.)

      Color me VERY disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......1999-01-19

This is the best book of this type I have seen. Separate chapters cover all the basics, such as foundations, roofing, siding, doors & windows, etc. Good hand-drawn plans and drawings and lots of pictures make it easy to visualize how to proceed. The book includes step-by-step plans on how to build 7 different structures, but it's the background "how-to" stuff that I found really helpful.

      Book Description

Although it harks from a time before power tools, electricity, and gasoline, this book abounds in simple ideas that rural householders still find useful today.Barns, poultry houses, piggeries, corn cribs, ice houses, spring houses, granaries, smokehouses, root cellars and even kennels and birdhouses are included in this fascinating compendium from days gone by.

5 out of 5 stars An American classic.......2000-04-26

This is a direct reprint of an 1881 classic, with an informative new forward by Castle Freeman. Halstead selected some of the most popular published designs from over two decades of the farm journal, The American Agriculturist. Designs include barns, stables, carriage houses, animal shelters, corn cribs, ice houses, spring houses, dog houses and bird houses. This book is still an inspiration for country builders.

      3 out of 5 stars Good "old-timer" building book.......2000-04-04

Although this book was quite informative it was not what I was looking for as it is lacking the tecnological side of building barns, sheds etc. It is written with reference to a previous time period--I did not find this book very useful for today's building and planning of such structures.

        Book Description

Brimming with 257 illustrations, this ecologically aware manual was written in 1881 with the farmer in mind. Its earthy, barn-building theories extend to dog- and bird-houses and are based upon principles that still shine brightly today: light and air, space, cost, beauty, and convenience.
