Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

The Cat and the Human Imagination is a fascinating historical survey of the changing cultural attitudes towards cats and the myriad ways that they have been depicted in literature and art. Feline images have permeated civilization since the time of the ancient Egyptians, and during this time the status of the cat has changed dramatically. The book examines the changing images-- fertility goddess, sly little predator, agent of Satan, avenging witness, aristocrat, friend, spirit of the home, bloodthirsty killer, seductive female--and relates them to the contexts in which they arose. It also analyzes how human attitudes towards cats seem to have evolved in parallel with attitudes towards animals, towards authority, and towards gender.
Western literature and visual art have reflected this change, developing from bare sketches to richly varied expressions of feline personality and human interaction with cats. Katharine M. Rogers seeks out the cats who make appearances in an impressive range of literary and artistic works, providing the first critical look at the symbolic functioning of cat characters in Poe's "The Black Cat," Dickens's Bleak House, and Zola's Therese Raquin, among other literary works. The historical and artistic range covered is impressive, creating a rich compendium that is the ideal book for the cat lover seeking a refreshingly substantial and scholarly work about this fascinating animal.
"This book is a classic-- something every cat-loving intellectual will have to own. (No one, of course, ever really owns a cat--but everyone should own this book.) It's the kind of book you want to quote from at the vet's, or cocktail parties, or whenever you get the urge to convert a dog lover to the true faith." --Emily Toth, Louisiana State University
Katharine M. Rogers is Professor Emerita of English, City University of New York. Her previous books include Feminism in Eighteenth-Century England and Frances Burney: The World of "Female Difficulties."

5 out of 5 stars Cat and the Human Imagination.......2004-06-05

"God made the cat to give man the pleasure of caressing the tiger."
So said Fernand Mery, and so it is. The cat has shared our home since the age of the pharaohs. In that span of time she has been the subject of artists and poets, cartoonists and fabulists. By turns she has been depicted as either self-absorbed or self-possessed, maliciously rebellious or innocently mischievous, incorrigibly wild or something like Mery's tiger.
In The Cat and the Human Imagination Katharine Brown offers a fascinating overview of our changing perception of the cat. Brown analyzes the works of artists from Lorenzo Lotto, whose 16th The Annunciation includes a sinister, almost rat-like cat which seems intent on fleeing the holy scene to Pierre-Auguste Renoir, whose paintings of young women with cats were studies in languid sensuality. It's a pity there are so few paintings included in this book.
The writers who have felt motivated to write about the cat are too numerous to mention. Baudelaire evoked the cat's "physical beauty and grace" in his mid-19th century poem "The Cat" and shocked bourgeois society with his decadent tastes. The Bronte sisters made cats the mainstay in the well-ordered household and so pleased Victorian society. Poe stressed their mystery....
My favorite is Rudyard Kipling's "The Cat That Walked by Himself," the best of his Just So Stories. As Brown writes: "We not only tolerate the cat's resistance to human authority and take vicarious pleasure in its freedom from the conventions that inhibit us-we idealize its independence. Rudyard Kipling wrote the classic tribute to the cat's quiet insistence on keeping true to himself in the brilliant fable "The Cat That Walked by Himself." After Woman has domesticated Man, Dog, and Horse, Cat smells warm milk and presents himself at the cave. He persuades her to admit him by amusing the baby, putting it to sleep by purring, and killing a mouse in the cave - all of which he would have done anyway to please himself. Thus he wins his point without making any concessions: "still I am the Cat who walks by himself."
After reading The Cat and the Human Imagination it occurs to me that we need something akin to a quantum theory to account for our various perceptions of the cat. Is it a merciless predator or an epitome of solicitous motherhood? Is it the companion of haggard old crones or sensuous young women? Is it affectionate or aloof?
Physicist asked whether light was a wave or a particle and decided that the answer depended on who asked the question. Maybe it's so with the cat as well.

4 out of 5 stars Broad ranging,entertaining,work by a scholarly cat admirer.......1998-07-30

The comprehensive scope and depth of Rogers' work reflects her long standing personal regard for and civilized society's varied view of the domestic cat over the centuries. Rogers' earlier studies of women in literature are woven into this work in insightful but possibly controversial ways which challenge and interest the reader. There are dozens of references to art and literature that provoke one's interest in learning more, and do not bore the reader. This is a work for adults, a gem that anyone at all interested in the societal history of the domestic cat will admire and return to.

I'd only read Get Shorty before this compendium,
and I wanted to further explore Leonard's work (I
saw the movie before I read Get Shorty, so I felt
I'd tainted the experience). This collection turned out to
be just what I needed.

Leonard's characters sneak up on you from the edge of the
page. It's quite a feeling to realize that your
preconceptions about character development are
being ground under Leonard's bootheel. I guess my
next step is buying three more Leonard tales and
supergluing them together to regain that
back-to-back, slug-in-the-gut feeling. Thanks,

    Book Description

In The Cat and the Fiddle, Jeremy Barlow explores 700 years of musical humor, a topsy-turvy world in which monkeys fiddle and pigs play the bagpipes. It is a vision of chaos and devilry as depicted in a variety of sources—the illuminated borders of medieval manuscripts, eighteenth-century prints of urban life, and even the illustrations of children's books.
Barlow reveals the shifting meanings behind such images, as they were often symptomatic of larger cultural trend such as rapid industrialization and urbanization, an emerging class system, and the moral movements of the late nineteenth century. As he compellingly argues, the development of the printing press, the popular spectacle of public concerts, and the rise of new political uses for music all played a critical role in musical history and were distinctly evident in images of musical humor.
The archives of Oxford's Bodleian Library provided a rich supply of previously unpublished material for Barlow's research. With full-color images throughout, The Cat and the Fiddle will be a delight for scholars of art and political history as well as lovers of music everywhere.

                5 out of 5 stars Very pleasing.......2007-07-26

Tony 'Baldrick' Robinson's 'Amateur Wind Instrument Maker' is an excellent guide to the craft of instrument building. As a semi-professional Pan-pipe player, I have often been disappointed with the timbre of mass-produced instruments. To achieve results here one requires a good degree of competence in various skills, but they are worth the effort. Doreen assures me that my rendition of 'Apache' now comes across far more effectively than on any factory-made instrument. This is a marvellous pre-cursor to his later book 'Amateur Grand Piano Maker'.

4 out of 5 stars A great book, but with some details lacking........2006-01-30

I would recomend this book to anyone that is seriously considering the crafting of woodwind instruments. The book provides basic plans for an eclectic mix of instruments and helped point out some of the problems that I was having in my own wood working adventures.
However, there were many areas that I felt were incomplete. The book had brief descriptions of techniques that I felt should have been expanded further and some of the plans should have had views from different aspects and in higher detail.
What I appreciate about this books the techniques for making your own tapered reamers and links to organizations that will help me to further and expand my knowledge on instrument craft.

this book did not cover what i had hoped that it would so was a waste of effort

5 out of 5 stars It's woth it for the plans........2003-01-27

Any where you go the price of even a poorly made fife is around 40$ Then you have things like crumhorns and racketts. Racketts list from 250 on up and good luck even finding a Tenor recorder for less than 300 (U.S.) So just on a plans basis the book is a good investment.
It's not a shop how-to manual. The book assumes you allready have and know how to use your tools. The author provides the needed information to make simple (Renassance-ish time period) wood wind instruments. It's exactly what it says is, an amature guide and from the stand point, it's an excellant book and an excellant buy

5 out of 5 stars The best reference on the subject.......1999-04-16

I purchased this volume about two years ago and finally had the chance to make some instruments based upon it. Overall the book is extremely good and it appears to be the only reference of its sort. I enjoy broswing the book and reading Robinson's informative essays on each instrument. It is an enjoyable book even if you never actually make any of the instruments in it.

I have looked for other references, but this seems to be the only one of its kind. Although there is a need for a more detailed construction-oriented manual of this type, I was able to make a quite satisfactory tenor cornamuse and a slightly less satisfactory tenor racket from Robinson's instructions.

If you intend to make instruments I would recommend that you find examples of the instrument you wish to make since there are many details that no description could adequately deal with.

My two major complaints are as follows. First, the instrument dimensions are given in metric units but the grid upon which the drawings are placed is in inches. A consistent use of one system or the other would make the drawings much easier to follow. Second, the drawings are vary highly in their quality. The baroque rackett, for example, is very clean and easy to follow, but the oboe and shawm drawings are of much lower quality.

The best thing would be a second, expanded edition of the book with better drawings.

(As one last note, if you are trying to find the "shell auger" mentioned in the book you will need to search for it from a wood turning catalogue as a "lamp auger")
