I took a two-day class from Harriet Hargrave. This is the next best thing. Her book is a book you want to read carefully and study. It's not a quick read. It's informative and well worth the time. It is a great resource.

Customer Reviews:
Great reading and project inspiration.......2007-01-10
Easy to follow directions and good illustrations help make this book a good tool for those who already have some experience with machine quilting. It is not a "primer" for those who are at the novice stages of machine quilting. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will certainly have a place for it in my quilting books library, but it will take a bit more time for it to have any practical use for me.
It was exciting to see all of the heirloom quality projects that are possible with machine quilting! It will certainly provide incentive and inspiration for future projects.
Recommended for advanced quilters wanting to branch out.......2005-08-07
Elegant Machine Quilting: Innovative Heirloom Quilting Using Any Sewing Machine teaches the basics of heirloom machine quilting, from choosing appropriate fabrics to customizing designs. Color photos accompany tips on pattern alternation, sizing choices, and finishes. Both are especially recommended for advanced quilters wanting to branch out.

Light on substance.......2000-11-15
A pretty book, but I didn't find the content very insightful -- it reads more like a glossy, extended brochure. Also, I don't know why they chose those particular projects. Oh well. I returned my copy.
Excellant book, must have for any quilter.......1999-10-13
The wait for this book has been well worth it. Not only is the book very educational but offers beautiful quilt projects as well. It is obvious that a lot of effort and planning went into this publication. Definitely a valuable addition to any quilter's library!
Customer Reviews:
the newer fourth edition is even better.......2005-10-29
harriet hargrave is a master, and continues to become even more amazing. if you are interested in machine quilting, get the next edition of this work--it includes her most recent tips, discoveries, etc.
As good as all the other reviewers said it was........2005-09-15
From the outset, learning why some things are done this way rather than that, I wanted to gather and destroy the five quilts I've made because they don't even approach "good" quality (forget heirloom quality). Getting past that, there was really useful information that made completing the quilt I was currently working on much easier and showed why some of my earlier ones are in the shape they are (sigh - if only I knew then...). The information on batting was comprehensive and very helpful. I still prefer polyester for its economy and fluff, but am going to try cotton and now know what the differences are (besides price). I am not a total beginner but quilts are only one part of my sewing. I consider myself a "hacker" rather than a serious quilter. I have read other machine quilting books which were very good, but I would have to say this is the best, with the most practical information. Note: there are no patterns for quilts, though there are quilt photos throughout the book. There are quilting line patterns to copy, however, with directional arrows to guide your machine quilting.
One of the bibles.......2005-01-08
This book is one of the bibles for machine quilting...Extremely well written, easy to follow and has a wealth of info...Great book!
The BEST.......2004-06-06
The first book you need on machine quilting. There is no better. The rest just supplement this one.
The Book I Have Been Waiting to Find.......2004-03-18
When I started to quilt a few months ago, I bought many "how to quilt" books. None of them really addressed what to do once you conquered piecing a top unless you wanted to hand-stitch it. This book covers what you need to know to to finish your quilt in style. The patterns are beautiful and just what I wanted. If I had found this book earlier, I would have saved myself from buying all of those useless other books!
This book is good for everyone from beginner to seasoned quilter.
Book Description
Crazy quilts are back, and they are more popular than ever! Through examination of several vintage crazy quilts, the author reveals the love and care with which the makers imbued their handiwork, as expressed in embroidered initials, dates, illustrated scenes, souvenir ribbons, and other mementos.
Customer Reviews:
I think it is a lovely book.......2006-12-09
I enjoyed seeing the beautiful antique quilts and reading about the makers. There are some nice close up of them as well so you can enjoy examining the details of the embellishments. Also included is instruction on how to make your own Crazy Quilt the old fashioned way.
Good how-to.......1999-06-18
Good photos & how-to. A detailed pattern for the crazy quilt in the movie "How to Make an American Quilt" is included. The text reads rather like a museum catalogue. There's also a fan quilt that was inherited by the author, but it isn't a crazy quilt so its inclusion here as a feature quilt is inappropriate. Like another reviewer I think Patty McCormick should have been acknowledged.
limited interest.......1999-05-31
it is unfortunate ms. dabbs did not list patty mccormick as the author of "pieces of an american quilt" when she listed the book as a reference source in the back of her book.
Book Description

Historical background blends with pricing information and details on how auction house quilts .......2006-05-27
Kathy Prochnow is a regular contributor to Traditional Quilter and has long provided insight into the quilt auction marketplace and how it works; so it's a logical transition from column to book, gathering her knowledge in QUILTS SOLD! A GUIDE TO HEIRLOOM AND ANTIQUE QUILTS. Historical background blends with pricing information and details on how auction house quilts work to provide quilters with the most thorough coverage in print. Her researcher husband contributes his expertise to gather a comprehensive price list of auctioned quilts, making this a real winner.

Customer Reviews:
This book should be free.......2007-02-27
It is my own fault for not reading the entire description of this book, but it is not what I first thought it was. This book simply has different layouts for stock cabinets your could buy (for example at Home Depot). I should think that manufacturers of these cabinets could give you a book like this for free to help you decide layouts. So, you have a book of hundreds of different arrangements of cabinets, and you'll probably find 1 or 2 that you actually like or need. It does seem to leave a lot of the figuring, ie measuring to fit, to you. If not free, this book should be like $9. I gave 3 stars because if you want lots of ideas on how to arrange cabinets for all areas of the house, this book serves its purpose. However, if I really rated its value to me, I'd say 1 star, maybe half. Can I return this??
Almost meaningless.......2007-02-14
This book seemed meaningless to me. As others have noted, it is basically a very long sequence of rather poor line drawings and very little else. Very few low quality pictures are included; that is a pity because they could help provide some inspiration or guide your design. And fairly little know-how information is provided for do-it-yourself folks - the author recommends using professional installers. For most people, cabinet manufacturer websites and/or a visit to your local Home Depot or Lowe's kitchen design center will be much more useful than this book.
Expected more photographs and instructions.......2006-11-05
This book contains almost no photographs of finished projects. There are hardly any diagrams of the intermediate steps, and the instructions are minimalistic at best. This book assumes a reasonable knowledge of cabinet installation techniques; however, persons who possess such skills would largely find this book unnecessary. What you do get in this book is lots of line drawings of how to stack and arrange cabinets in different configurations, but these drawings are much like the ones you can get through the design services that are provided by Lowe's, Home Depot, and other major home supply stores.
A better choice would be "Built-In Furniture: A Gallery of Design Ideas".
Wonderful ideas!.......2005-11-29
500 pages of cabinet designes in line drawing format! If you get one idea from this book it is worth the price, and believe me, there are many ideas you can use. I have been designing cabinets for a year now and this book has added to my ability to generate good designs for my clients.
Do not confuse illustrations with photographs........2005-10-21
The only color photograph is on the cover. This is a big book with 500 pages, hundreds of drawings depicting many layouts and a clear list of cabinets needed along with additional materials required to complete each layout. Each of the twelve chapters focuses on a specific area such as bedrooms, baths, beverage centers, entertainment centers and utility areas. The author offers many design variations for each area.
The strength of this book is the huge variety of designs shown for each project area. The author illustrates many clever ways to use stock cabinets to create a variety of custom looks. The weakness for me is the lack of any color photographs to help visualize the results in a finished projects. This is a great resource of concepts for professional designers or decorators who have the imagination to know how drawings translate to finished results.
