Book Description
Widely regarded as the definitive work on the design and fitting of gun stocks, the first edition covered the subject practically and theoretically, in terms of shooting vision and eye dominance, stocks for game and clay shooting, and pattern plates and the try-gun. Historical material explores how the modern gun stock evolved from the poles and planks of the first handheld firearms to the highly sophisticated designs of the modern era. The second edition includes fitting rifles, recoil, and making and finishing a gun stock.
Book Description
The third in a popular series by professional gunsmith Patrick Sweeney, Gunsmithing: Shotguns offers detailed step-by-step instructions for those who want to repair or upgrade their own shotguns.

Following in the footsteps of his other books on handguns and rifles, Sweeney also tells readers when to call a professional for help and what questions to ask before a professional gunsmith starts working on their shotgun. This is a valuable reference that will save the reader time and money on shotgun repairs.

-Step-by-step instructions with photos.

Add this book to your library.......2006-10-04
This is a very good book to read on shotguns and shooting. Mr. McIntosh is an excellent writer. His style of mixing technique with short stories and antidotes made for a pleasant, educational and entertaining read. Add this book to your library.
Michael 's The Man.......2004-07-02
Combination of magazine articles for lovers of fine shotguns.
Basic information about guns, loads, and especially good section on shooting techniques. Jack O'Conner wrote a lot about rifles, but McIntosh's speciality is the sxs shotgun. However, he has taken over the position that O'Conner once held.
You are what you read, and for the last several years I have been reading Michael's work in "Sporting Classics". I have been mainly a rifle guy for the past 25 years, but have now started back with shotguns. I blame Michael for this.
Not really anything new in this book; just more McIntosh. But in his case, more is better. I especially like his lead-ins to the chapters. Classy!! Classy guy !!
Bedside Reader.......2001-12-11
I have never had a book, which I keep by my bed and read ever night, it keeps giving me more and more information. This is a wonderful book full of good common-sense gun knowledge.
Among the Finest Out There.......1999-10-09
I absolutely loved this book ! It interested me in the subject of fine shotguns and now I am hooked. This author conveys a great deal of informations about shotguns and shooting, but the reason I will re-read it time and again is that you can sense his deep passion for the subject. That enthusiasm is contagious. I am definitely ordering its sequel.
All you ever wanted to know about shotguns but were................1998-11-27
Michael McIntosh is rapidly becoming an Emeritus Professor of Shotguns. "Shotguns & Shooting" is a collection of previously published articles on technical aspects of shotguns and shooting. The book easily talks readers through a miriade of technials details from chokes to trigger pull weights, from shots size to home loads. If you own a shotgun, you will enjoy this book.
For wingshooters - take a look at McIntoshes chapter on shooting technique, he has some simple but effective footwork advice. On a sporting layout I went from regular 18/25 to 22/25 in three weeks of practice.

Dated content and lacking in focus.......1999-02-06
Like many of Gun Digest's titles, this book appears to collect a series of previously published articles that do not have a clear, progressive relationship. I am not a gunsmith, but was hoping to learn about the basics of shotgun functioning. This book was either much too simple -- outlining differences between SxS, O/U, and Autos -- or way too complex -- converting an old rifle barrel into a sleeve for a pump gun. Worst of all, the references to popular models are so dated (maybe 20 years) that they're almost useless. If "Gunsmithing" weren't in the title, I might feel differently; but Brister would still be the superior book on gun dynamics.

Amazon Book Purchase.......2007-05-24
A good little book with a lot of information at a very good price.
This is a keeper!.......2006-03-26
This book along with, "The Gun Digest Book of Exploded Gun Drawings" was given as a gift to my son who, with his brother, is a novice hunter, with a beginning interest in gunsmithing. They have acquired a number of shot guns and rifles and found this book matched their needs exactly. They found this book fascinating and were so excited. Clear, helpful, detailed and would appear to be valuable for both the beginner and serious firearm enthusiasts. They have put it to practical use - so easy to use! These books have not been relegated to the library or reference shelf yet and as reluctant as I am to say it, they remain in the bathroom, so are read and reviewed almost daily and I don't see that changing anytime soon. They can't say enough good things about the book -
THIS IS A KEEPER!
Good Shotgun reading.......2005-10-07
Yet another good reading for the beginner, or for someone who specifically onws one of the shotguns in the book. As I have said in another review, I would like to see Gun Digest publish another volume with newer production shotguns in addition to this book. All in all, very good, worth reading.
The Gun Digest Book of Firearms Assembly/Disassembly.......2005-09-25
This reference book contained the information I was looking for and will be a book that I can rely on for many years. The only problem I found was that some pages were almost to dark to see breakdown components. A better breakdown sequence would be helpful. All in all the book was helpful and I was able to realize the problem I was having in reassembling a Winchester Automatic 12ga, shotgun.
"magnum" opus.......2004-10-18
There are a LOT of shotguns described in this book. If you need a bench reference on how to disassemble a BROAD variety of guns this is the book for you. A non-gunsmith myself, I would have prefered something with more tips/tricks or theory that would allow more expression for my own mechanical aptitudes, hopefully resulting in the better functioning of my shotgun. This is not the book for the discussion of why your gun does not feed consistently, nor why you use so many barrel seals. Instead this is more of a no frills, paint by the numbers, race through taking apart and putting together a myriad number of dissimilar models (with an index of other guns that are similar, or variants) that cover the entire spectrum of shotgunnery. I gave it five stars because the pictures are quite clear and if you are stuck half way through the reassembly of an unusual shotgun, your answer may well be in here.

Filled with all the critical facts that American owners of British guns need, this book is the outgrowth of Boothroyd's many articles for Shooting Times. A complete reference source that is unparalleled.
Customer Reviews:
Rather Disappointing.......2000-08-23
While information on this subject is hard to find and nearly any book is a welcome addition to it this one just misses the point. Having several old english muzzleloaders I was disappointed to find no information on them. What information there was was slim to say the least. Though British shotguns were so popular in early America there was little to add to our knowledge of our collections. Even the famous Ketland and Whatly and Barnett makers were hardly mentioned. Too bad...
Sidelocks & Boxlocks by Boothroyd.......2000-06-29
Anyone wishing to use this book to help research and decide which English guns to consider for purchase, will be disappointed. I expected a book detailing strengths and weakness of the various English makers and their products, past and present. Unfortunately, this is not the case. This book is a litany of English makers, but little attempt is made to discuss their respective strengths and weaknesses, nor to categorize them into quality divisions. Pictures are disappointing; no color plates are included. The problem this book had meeting my expectations (misconceived or not) may be due to the multitude of makers and limited existing records. Much is made of company history when available, and readers who contributed information to the author. One would expect a noteworthy English author with over 40 years of exposure to the various maker's products to provide more comparison and analysis, and in the process, help those wishing to expand their knowledge of British double guns. Worth adding to your bookshelf if you have everything else on your list, but not as a first book. I have not read any other books by this author and was greatly disappointed based upon his reputation. Worth the Amazon.com price of $24.95, but not worth #35.95.

Wonderful refurence book.......2007-05-16
I peticularly enjoyed the parts on the early shotguns, especially the works of John Moses Browning and the refurence to Spencer's Pump Action shotgun. Nicely written. Wonderful pictures. Very well put together.
No library on firearms should be without this book.
Great Reference.......2007-04-11
Great book on Winchester Shotguns. Interesting read with great pictures of most models.
Book Description
Boys and girls love woodworking projects! But most kids (and most parents) lack woodworking skills. That's where Kids' Building Workshop steps in. Craig Robertson, a master carpenter and renowned designer and builder of furniture, and Barbara Robertson, an art educator who specializes in teaching children, have developed an inspired method for teaching kids and their parents the basics of woodworking.
In this lively, fully photographed and illustrated book, the Robertsons present fun projects that teach essential woodworking skills. For example, the Spider-Web String Art project teaches kids how to wield a hammer, and the Drilled Name Plaque project teaches kids the safe and proper way to use a drill.
Building on these basic skills, the book moves on to intermediate-level projects. Kids learn how to make a sawhorse, a tool box, a step stool--all things that every carpenter must have to build bigger and more elaborate projects.
Finally, the kids are ready to take on seriously hip projects: a cricket cage, a book house, a dollhouse (and dollhouse furniture!), a lemonade stand, and a kids' play table.
The Kids' Building Workshop is a great primer that passes the hammer to a new generation of woodworking kids (and their parents).

Nailing Down a Holiday Present.......2006-12-16
NAILING DOWN A HOLIDAY PRESENT FOR THE YOUNG CARPENTER ON YOUR LIST
A family partnership has waved a magic wand over how-to books and brought out a present not only for the holiday season, but for all year long -- "The Kids' Building Workshop: 15 Woodworking Projects for Kids & Parents to Build Together."
"We hope to share enough tips, give enough good advice, and create enough enthusiasm to allow parents and children to develop basic carpentry skills," Barbara Robertson, former director of education at the Williams College Museum of Art, said of her book.
With her husband J. Craig, an experienced carpenter, and her daughters Camille and Allegra, the family has come up with projects to help children master basic woodworking, beginning at age six with adult supervision.
"Most kids can learn to hammer at age six and our kids could use saws by age seven. Eight-year-olds can do a beautiful job with simple power tools like drills, as long as a parent is right there working with them," she said in an interview with The Sacramento Bee.
While some parents don't allow children to use tools, hoping to avoid blackened fingernails and Band-Aids, this also means that many children don't get to master the use of simple tools at a young age.
The first section of the book, "Setting up Shop: Getting to Know Your Tools," introduces beginners to basic woodworking. Robertson covers hammering to block planing, and introduces simple projects to reinforce those skills.
The second section, "Down to Business: Building Your Own Projects," offers 12 kid-friendly projects from simplest to most challenging. Burgeoning carpenters begin with string art, a project that builds nailing technique, and progress to full-size lemonade stands and puppet theaters.
The book is written in clear, precise language that is accessible to both children and adults.
Robertson's upbeat instructions are interspersed with tips addressed to parents. Robertson's daughter Camille addresses her tips to kids. There is an emphasis on safety, creativity, and experimentation.
"Everything gets nailed backward the first time. The trick is knowing how to take a nail out and start over again," Robertson says. "Mistakes are part of the learning process. Making them helps kids learn that mistakes are OK as long as you don't give up."
"The Kids' Building Workshop: 15 Woodworking Projects for Kids and Parents to Build Together" is published by Storey Kids. It is available on amazon.com.
Robertson directed the Williams College Museum of Art's education department for more than a decade. She coordinated hands-on workshops, community outreach programs, museum tours, and installations. Under her leadership, the museum was recognized with the 2000 Distinguished Cultural Institution Award from the Massachusetts Alliance for Arts Education for its "instructional excellence and innovative approaches to art education."
