Right On!.......2007-05-10
You know, the more I read him, the more I am convinced that Tom Wolfe is the world's greatest living writer. In fact I'm getting to the stage that if he wrote out his back shopping lists and released it on Amazon I'd probably buy it. Is Radical Chic the greatest work under about 60pages in the English language? You'll never think of Leonard Bernsteen (Bern - stein!) again without smirking.......
Funny funny and highly enjoyable.......2007-04-29
I read this years ago and rereading it now I am reminded of what a hilariously funny writer Wolfe is. Wolfe 's description of the super- in-radical chic crowd as they patronize and entertain the guntoting Black Panthers is ferociously clever. Wolfe analyzes what he calls 'nostalgie de boue' the 'nostalgia for the mud' and gives a brief course in the history of High Society in America. The old money always holds its nose as the new money until it it is replaced by it.
Wolfe is especially funny when he takes off on accents. Here is a small sample," Otto Preminger speaks up from the sofa where he's sitting, also just a couple of feet from (Black Panther) Cox. "He used one important word" then he looks at Cox'"you said zis is de most repressive country in de world. I don't beleef zat"
Wolfe gives us a blow- by - blow account of the famous party at the Bernstein's residence. He also tells of the aftemath when Charlotte Curtis gives her New York Times Report and the radical chic crowd is astonished to find themselves abandoned by the key institution of American liberalism, the 'New York Times Editorial Page'.
In the second essay Wolfe goes to the West Coast and describes the white liberal establishment encountering the newly militant minorities angered at the bureaucracy of the poverty program.
This is a funny funny and highly enjoyable book.
Fiction and Journalism.......2006-06-14
The cringing white liberal and the self-serving bureaucrat, the sychophantic Jewish silver-spoon socialist and the cunning black race-baiting political opportunist -- these are the types of characters that Tom Wolfe elucidates with wicked satire in his stories, which are a titillating admixture of acid fiction and scathing journalism. The types in this book, moreover, seem to be a fixture of the contemorary world, and their elucidation by Wolfe amounts to a humorous education in past forms. One cannot help but note that militant Islam receives the same perverted reception from several quarters as did the likes of the Black Panther movement of yore.
Off the Bus Wolfe Becomes Social Critic, Timeless Insights .......2006-02-19
Radical Chic is timeless and as relevant today as when Wolfe put his politically incorrect observations down in writing. Wolfe is like a mirror of inescapable truth to those blinded by their sense of personal wisdom and charity.
Mau-Mauing the Flack Catchers captures the tidal pond where government and neighborhood activists interact.
Wolfe has the eye of a reporter mixed with the sense of story to chronicle events in a way that needs little narration.
Both should be required reading in every school of journalism and by every public official in the land.
Absolutely Delightful........2004-11-05
I can't believe it took me this long to get around to reading this book. Here we see the rich and famous cavorting with violent anti-white, anti-American, and anti-Semitic criminals during the 1960s. It's hard to say who these pampered masochistic high society types hated more; themselves or their own people. Wolfe's recounting of Leonard Bernstein's "ode to the Panthers" party is outstanding. It's great journatlism. Heck, you know a situation is surreal when Barbara Walters is a voice of reason at a social gathering.
As a writer, Wolfe, could not possibly have done a better job. The narrator is everywhere but is not himself a character in the proceedings. He may be a fly on the wall but he is a fly that takes copious notes. The details are magnificent and he has a savant's eye for great quotations. You'll laugh, you'll rage, the limousine liberals and champagne socialists will astound you. The book was written over 30 years ago but it is just as applicable today as one could replace The Black Panthers with a nineties fellon like Mumia Abu Jamal. The section on mau-mauing, or the fine art of the racial shakedown, is totally priceless. It too is as applicable to the present as to the past. Wolfe foreshadows the great future successes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson at coercing cash out of whites who willingly give it away to ease their politically correct minds. A magnificent effort and, at 10 bucks, the price isn't bad--a pity that he didn't write another 200 pages.

Great Food and Presentation.......2007-03-21
I love this cookbook! The foods that result from the recipes are wonderfully delicious and unique. I wish there was a recipe for puff pastry, as opposed to calling for this as an ingredient, but I found a recipe for it online.
I am a vegan and do notice how there is some recipes which call for omnivorous cheese (what some call lacto-ovo vegetarian), but there are plenty of recipes that rely on only plant-based goodness, and, further, many people now have available to them truly vegetarian/no animal product cream cheese and other cheeses.
Do try the toovar dhal with cilantro and lime dumplings and the coconut & lime panna cotta!
Very Cafe Chic.......2007-01-10
I just recieved this book in the mail and flipped through each glossy page on my train ride to work this morning. The photography is just stunning. I think that when you have more adventurous recipes pictures are very helpful in the way that I'm more inclined to try it out if I know what it's meant to look like.
There are so many wonderful combinations of foods I've never thought about, Elliot gives great ideas on how to offer the dishes with great presentation. My only minor complaint would be that I wouldn't know where to buy many of the ingredients in the recipes. I supposed I had better start looking for a fine foods shop now!
My usual complaint with cookbooks is that they don't offer much in the way of bistro-style recipes -- this one hits it right on the dot.

It is better than some..........2007-03-02
The author's home is beautiful and it did contain some great ideas. Overall I wasn't impressed. I find more good stuff in my everyday magazines than this. Wasn't worth the $$$.
Cute, but disappointing.......2003-12-04
There were some great ideas, and I do appreciate the tools listings, but overall I was a little disappointed. It just didn't seem to be as in-depth as I had hoped. I hope that she expands on her texts in the future.
I love this book!!.......2003-09-19
Whenever I'm thinking of doing a project around the house, I always refer to my copy of Junk Chic. Kathy has great modern ideas that are easy to do, don't cost much, and look great when you're done. If you like to decorate, you need to add Junk Chic to your book shelf!!
I don't have much money but these ideas are great!!!.......2003-06-24
I have always wanted to have a home that looked this beautiful, but never have had a lot of money. I have so enjoyed both the satisfaction of doing these unique and very affordable projects and then sitting back and seeing what I have created. I would recommend this book to anyone. I have seen the "Junk Chic", Kathryn Elliott on the local TV morning show (as a quest) - she is inspiring to say the least.
Very informative.......2003-06-24
This is a one-of-a-kind book with lots of fun projects.

She offers the bottom line on wardrobe basics, fabrics, color, design, handbags, and hairdos, and shows you that what you lack in capital you can make up for with savvy, imagination, resourcefulness, and a winning spirit.
Customer Reviews:
More of the same.......2007-01-10
I have read three of Leah's books now and the advice appears to be the same in each. Whilst on the one hand this means the author is consistent in her advice on what constitutes style and how to attain it affordably, on the other hand there is little new material to pick up from each new book.
Taught me a lot about how to dress.......2005-08-16
I bought this book as a young teenager and used it for many years as a reference guide for how to dress for occasions where I was unsure how to look. I came from a less-than-privileged background (we weren't poor, but my parents were teachers and there wasn't a lot of money) but many of my friends were from affluent families. My grandmothers and mother are very classy people and they did their best to teach me about how to dress, but they had no experience with, say, dressing for a golf tournament dinner or for a day on a sailboat.
Over the years, through college and my professional career, I would refer back to this book a lot. Yes, the drawings are dated; yes, some of the advice is dated. But there are some great tips in this book about how to buy basics for your wardrobe that will last for years, how to recognize quality fabrics and workmanship, how to combine high-end and low-end items for a complete polished look, what looks always work and what will always be questionable, etc. If you come from a working-class background, but because of your job or your spouse's social status you need to socialize with affluent people, it is great to have a guide telling you what works and what doesn't, and how not to make a fool out of yourself. That is what this book did for me. Over the years I have used the advice in the book over and over, to build a classic, conservative, professional wardrobe that helps me whether I am going to an important meeting at work or a black-tie charity function.
There are some sections of the book that you have to take with a grain of salt, especially since now this book is over 20 years old. But if you are totally at a loss about what to wear to a given social event, or you feel you're at a disadvantage because you socialize with people who can afford much better clothes than you can, this book is a great primer about what to wear. It's a classic, and the advice is still as relevant today as it was back when the book was written.
Get Your Hands on a Copy ASAP!.......2004-03-02
I have read all of Leah Feldon's books, and Dressing Rich is my all-time favourite. Yes, some of the information is dated, such as references to former First Ladies, etc, but the underlying principles still apply. If you put into practice the principles in this book, trust me, everyone will think you're loaded, even if you're far from it.
Very Dated.......2003-02-01
I really enoyed Leah Feldon's book, "Does This Make Me Look Fat" and wanted to read some more of her work. Based on the good reviews this book received and the interesting chapter titles, I ordered it sight unseen.
Be warned-this book is from 1982. Nancy Reagen is often held up as a rich dressing woman to emulate. (What?!)Most of the fashion drawings show very heavily padded shoulders and wide belt styles a la 1980s. But worst of all, the 1980 advice often contradicts Leah Feldon's 2000 advice. For example: 2000 advice: wear dark colors-author's wardrobe is mostly black & dark colors-looks richer.1980 advice:off white jackets and slacks are "fashion essentials." (Miami Vice?) Even the cover is a contradiction-in the book the author states that long hair never looks elegant hanging loose, yet the cover shows a woman with a mane of hot-rollered slightly frizzy long hair hanging loose.
Sure the book covers basic concepts like cashmere makes for a rich sweater, and the fashion "types" in the first chapter are interesting. Had I been able to see this book in person though, I would have immediately dismissed it as dated. Buy instead, her new book from this decade.
Still valuable after 14 years.......2002-12-11
I bought this book in 1988, just out of college, and I still keep it handy. It's very useful for special events, business situations, you name it. Also fun to read, and helpful in planning "investment" purchases. This book has saved me lots of money, and has helped me figure out how to use things I already have. Just a terrific book.
Book Description
Music and fashion: the deep connection between these two expressive worlds is firmly entrenched. Yet little attention has been paid to the association of sound and style in the early twentieth century--a period of remarkable and often parallel developments in both high fashion and the arts, including music. This beautifully written book, lavishly illustrated with fashion plates and photographs, explores the relationship between music and fashion, elegantly charting the importance of these arts to the rise of transatlantic modernism. Focusing on the emergence of the movement known as Neoclassicism, Mary E. Davis demonstrates that new aesthetic approaches were related to fashion in a manner that was perfectly attuned to the tastes of jazz-age sophisticates. Looking in particular at three couturiers--Paul Poiret, Germaine Bongard, and Coco Chanel--and three breakthrough fashion magazines--La Gazette du Bon Ton, Vanity Fair, and Vogue--Davis illuminates for the first time the ways in which fashion's imperatives of originality and constant change influenced composers such as Erik Satie, Igor Stravinsky, and Les Six. She also considers the role played by the Ballets Russes, and explores the contributions of artists including costume and set designer Léon Bakst, writer and director Jean Cocteau, Amédée Ozenfant, and Pablo Picasso. The first study to situate music in this rich context, Classic Chic demonstrates the profound importance of the linked endeavors of composition and couture to modernist thought. In addition to its innovative approach to this important moment in history, Davis's focus on the social aspects of the story makes the book a tremendously engaging read.

Customer Reviews:
I was never Aware How Many Ways Country could be Described........2004-01-15
I would call chic country,a place that is relaxing,
renewing and comfortable,as the author shows in so many
different ways.
First is,Blue and White Country. These are ageless
colors that represent the sky, water and purity. This
can be attained without a beach house purchase.Combine
blue and white on a shelf.Whitewash old bricks.Keep
areas with blue and white pristine clean and they will
be a comfort.
Second, Patriotic Country. It is very popular now and
old fashioned toys, flags, and pewter all reflect God
and Country, and a certain sense of individulism. Not
for everybody but attractive,nontheless.
Cottages by the sea, look stunning with minimal blue
and white.Wicker chairs in brown or white, this is the
third choice.
Next,Formal Country,a type rarely seen.This appeared
to be Spanish or Western, with hand carved furniture
and dark beamed ceilings.A close relative of mine
built a summer home in the 1920's.It had carved Vic-
torian furniture and imported candlesticks. It was a
combo of Tudor-Spanish with Jacobean furniture and heavy
lead paned windows. As with many families,it became the permanent
dwelling after the Depression.
Next,a change with Eclectic Country, drawn from many good
sources, especially Collector Style. It tends to balance us in our
high-tech civilazation. The best is usually drawn and compatable.
Harmonious groupings of ironstone dishes mixed with unique
quilt squares.Rustic Country,is what most people have in mind,
when you say Country.Birdhouses, recycled items, weathered wood
and vintage items.Very likeable section,Collectors Style.
I personally liked the arragement of the Family photos on one
wall. All in different frames they tell a family history, instead
of the new all black frames so popular now.
It also show how to group them with effect. Many other retro
collections are shown to advantage.
Lastly,is decorating with White, where you can never go wrong.White rooms with cedar brown beamed ceilings that lift the eye.Vintage white iron headboard and nostalgic birds and
birdhouses.Plain white mirrors in a bathroom. And of course lace pearls and strewn white roses.Who could co wrong with this.
Every time, I look at this book I find more examples of what
I missed. In its' own way, this book tells a history of my
America.
Not so chic...............2003-08-08
For a book with this title, I'm surprised that all of the decor shown is basically just typical country. I was looking for country with a more contemporary feel, but that is not how "chic" is defined for this book. Otherwise it's not a bad country decorating book per se, I just think it should have a different title.
