Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars By golly those other reviewers are right.......2007-02-26

I actually was thinking of buying this book, based on one sweater shown in one of my knitting catalogs. However the other reviewers held me back from buying it. At the same time, I wondered if they were being just too fussy.

No, they were not. They were right on the button.

I have just returned from two days at the Stitches West Convention where I saw this book. I looked through the entire book. There were only two sweaters I would have made in the whole book (that's why it gets 2 stars). The rest were not my taste at all.

Another reviewer complained about the book having too many designs for fat people in the book. A lot of the models wearing the sweaters were on the plump side but so am I (in the olden days, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, it was called a matronly figure). I still would not wear the sweaters they were modeling.

Just because I am plump and older does not mean I want to look dowdy or out of date. However I also do not want to look silly dressing in something that really only looks good on young women or those who have had extensive comestic surgery so they look like a young woman. In the dinosaur days, it was called "mutton dressed as lamb."

So pretty much everything in this book was unappealing to me. I could not even think of ways to alter the patterns to make then more appealing.

After having seen it, I am definitely NOT buying it.

3 out of 5 stars Not extrordinary but might fit the bill.......2007-01-04

Got this one at Amazon's latest clearance for a fraction of cover price, and that mitigates for me in favor of ownership. Only a few patterns in here that I might make, but I agree that it's nice to see a pattern book that swings more towards sizes more common for grownup women. "Fat sizes"? I'd say the most common in the book are 36-40 inches, although yes, there's more here in the way of "big girl" 52" bust sizes than "human coathanger" 28".

Some interesting uses of variagated yarns, if you have some of those to use up. Otherwise unremarkable, but the patterns are simple and clearly diagramed so as to be a joy for those interested in simple templates to incorporate some element or accomodate a different gauge yarn. It's a tough market for knitting books these days - so many amazing free patterns out there, that you really have to be "well above average". By that standard, Ms. Noble's book is fun, but no "must have".

5 out of 5 stars A great knitting book.......2006-06-16

I must differ with the previous review. The styles are classic and nicely done. I like all of the designs, except for the design for a gansey with elongated ribbing at the bottom. Everything else is wearable, and sized for _real_ women. Most designs will fit at least a 1x.
There is a nice shawl pattern and an everyday cardigan as well as the beautiful top pictured here. Yarns used range from worsted to bulky, although the shawl is laceweight. There is a beautiful sleeveless top, with very pretty lace on the bottom.
This book is a great purchase for anyone that wants classic designs, especially for real sized women.

1 out of 5 stars Classic Knits for Women.......2006-06-04

I had to return this book immediately.

There was nothing I would want to make or wear, most of the sweaters were for fat sizes and the styling was ordinary. I guess classic means ordinary in this context.

The lace panel at the bottom of a "Hawaiian" sleeveless blue variagated top was chaotic.

The picture in the illustration for this book is the only acceptably stylish sweater in the book, but not good enough for me to keep the book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great source of inspiration!.......2007-08-02

My husband and I are turning our uninspired 1968 tract home into a 2 story Mediterranean. We bought the Kitchen & Bath collection to help us in the design phase. These are not "do it yourself" books. Instead, they help you focus on how to design a kitchen or bath that will work for you. They discuss types of flooring, counters, cabinets, lighting, and how to design a space that "works" for your lifestyle and that "flows" well within your floorplan. We have lots of other books with lots of pretty pictures of designer kitchens & baths but these books were the most useful when we finally sat down with our architect. Without them, we would have never thought to include a lot of the little touches that helped to maximize our kitchen space for the way we cook (canning, cake decorating, candy making, entertaining) or how to make the best use of our bathroom space (extra storage and accessibility) since I have a disability. You might think that your architect would help you with all these things but don't count on it. The clearer your ideas are and the better you are able to articulate those ideas to your architect, the better your design is going to fit your lifestyle and the happier you will be when the project is finished.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-05-10

What an excellent book this is! It is truly impressive to peruse a decorating book where attention to detail is evident. This book features page after page of lovely bathrooms, in every style conceivable. This is not "House Beautiful" or "Metropolitan Home" where every room is stripped bare and void of any sign of life. This book shows modern bathrooms, country bathrooms, bathrooms for kids, 1950's bathrooms with tourquoise tile, etc. It is a feast for the eyes and worthy of owning. It is without a doubt, the best bathroom book I've ever seen, (and I've seen dozens) and gave me some great ideas for our renovation.

    Book Description

The bathroom today is getting more attention than ever from homeowners, as they realize its value as a personal retreat and resale enhancer. Gone are the days of garish tile and fuzzy toilet seat covers: now, bathrooms are as much about taste and style as the rest of the house. People want them to be both beautiful and functional, and manufacturers have responded with many more choices in materials and fixtures. This book covers them all, with ideas for tiny half-baths, medium-size his-and-hers, and large, luxurious home spas. Specifics on ventilation, waterproofing, faucets, showers, tubs, and more give readers the knowledge they need to create the bathroom they've always wanted. Taunton's New Bathroom Idea Book gives homeowners hundreds of ideas about how to make one of the most necessary rooms in the house one of the most enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Not for step-by-step building, but good ideas & photos.......2006-06-24

I couldn't decide online and went to the store and bought this book and Better Homes and Garden Bathroom Idea File after flipping through everything in stock. I disagree with the previous reviewer; they do offer suggestions for small baths and modern baths. I was particularly interested in bathroom design ideas for awkward roof angles for the second floor of my bungalow. If you are looking for a how-to book, this isn't it, but it's a good book for dog-earing pages early in the design process.

3 out of 5 stars Very good for large bathrooms and styles tend to be more traditional.......2005-10-27

This book doesn't cater for smaller bathrooms. The pictures shown here are mostly for master bathrooms and doesn't give much focus to guests bathrooms. I find that the styles shown here are very traditional and classic in design. Not much coverage on more modern approaches for bathrooms. Very little coverage for Asian type of bathrooms, you'll find lots of emphasis on the bathtubs instead of shower cubicles.

The bathroom, any bathroom, begs to be designed as a space for both relaxing comfort and complete privacy--at once a utilitarian space of functionality and a peaceful oasis. The Bathroom Planner is full of practical advice and handy tools that will help readers looking to update their bathroom--or completely remodel it--find the perfect design.

The book begins with a useful section on assessing needs and includes informational charts aimed at singles, couples, families, and those with special needs. Each of these charts offers helpful tips and advice for designing for small, large, budget, and awkwardly spaced bathrooms. The "Bathroom Styles" chapter uses a clever split-page design that allows readers to mix and match walls, cabinets, fixtures, and floors by flipping back and forth until they find a combination that suits their needs and taste. "Bathroom Planning" guides readers through the process of figuring out what fixtures and other furniture they require and how to fit them into the space they have in a way that is functional and comfortable to use. "Bathroom Basics" walks readers through the principles of bathroom ergonomics and reviews the available styles of storage, bathtubs, showers, sinks, toilets, bidets, faucets and fixtures, and accessories. "Bathroom Elements" helps readers choose appropriate materials for floors, walls, countertops, windows, and more. "Quick Fixes" is ideal for those who simply want to improve or update their bathrooms without completely remodeling.

The reusable stickers and floor-layout grid in the back of the book are indispensable tools in planning a new bathroom, and the handy checklists take readers step by step through the process without missing a beat. Full-color photographs of bathrooms ranging from Asian-inspired spare rooms suitable for peaceful meditation to sleek contemporary meccas of glass and steel will surely inspire readers to find a style that suits their own needs, taste, and home. --Robin Donovan

    2 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment.......2002-10-24

I had high hopes for this book as a resource in redesigning the bathroom in my newly-acquired house. Alas, for anyone who's had anything to do with bathroom remodelling, this book is way more cute than it is substantive.

It's got cute little split pages so you can play bathroom dress-up and determine your style. They're fun, but they don't give you much of an idea of anything, really. More of a kid's game than a design aide.

It's also got cute little press-out baths and sinks and loos that you can stick on squared paper so you can allegedly develop alternative layouts. The problem is, the cute little press-outs are far from comprehensive, and lack images of smaller-than-average tubs, or petite toilets or corner sinks. The text mentions items like soaking tubs and specialty sinks that aren't included in the stick-on figures

    4 out of 5 stars Cute workbook.......2002-04-27

This is a hands-on design book. Great for those that are starting to design or redesign their bathroom (daydreamers too). Included is a split page design that allows you to mix and match wall, cabinets, and fixtures. It also comes with reusable stickers and layout girds in the front and back of the book.It is jam packed with information to help you solve all of your design dilemmas. A

          it is so bad

i hate it because i cant find certin things

2 out of 5 stars not very creative.......2002-12-15

With the word creative in the title I was expecting a more original style of decorating, or at least a broader range of styles. Instead, the style of this book is primarily tradional/cosmopolitan. I do not like that style, so that is probably why I don't like this book. I found it rather boring. The photos are not too bad, but nothing special. I have to admit I was too turned off by the photos to bother reading much of the text, so perhaps the written information would be more useful to people, but I doubt it. Two other definitely more useful books would be The Kitchen Planner and Better Homes and Gardens Complete Kitchens. I reccomend that you skip this book.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Home Design: Rooms for Everyday Living.......2000-06-27

This book is a wonderful design book. The photos are inspiring and show a broad range of modern and welcoming styles. The text accompanying them is very straightforward and details what limitations or problems the design overcame. It is difficult to imagine that the rooms will become dated - they appear to be very fresh, sensuous and appealing. I was able to take some ideas from various rooms and incorporate into my place. This book is very inspirational and allows one to view work of top designers and architects not readily accessible to the public.
