Dr Pitcairns natural health.......2007-10-05
This is absolutely a must book. Giving dogs prescribed medications often involves side affects which shorten their lives. Being able to find out about natural products that can help them is great. It can not only lenghten their lives, but also cost less in the long run. I highly reccomend this book to all dog owners.
great resource.......2007-10-01
this is a great resource book. It has lots of background info on dog foods and so much info on great supplements. It could be made easier with breakdowns or charts to guide you for quicker reference, because I find myself having to flip back and forth a lot. There is definitely lots of info and it has to be read more than once. I think the recipes are sound and easy to make. Although I can't cook for my dogs all the time, at least I can do it whenever they are ill or recovering from some ailment or surgery to ensure that their bodies are strong when they need to heal. This book makes it manageable to do that.
A great resource.......2007-09-23
This book is a great resource for pet owners. I find the health-care section of the book very useful. I have modified the recipes to accomodate the inherited allery issues my dog has. Modifying the recipes is a very involved process as the substituion of products recommended and appropriate amounts required for balanced nutrition can be a hassle to figure out, especially, if one's pet was allergic to multiple products.
This is a great book for pet owners who want to try homemade cooking and alternative medicine for their pets.
Excellent overall but diet not suited for all .......2007-09-01
There is more than one way to feed a healthy, non-commercial diet. I recommend buying both Dr. Pitcairn's book and Andi Brown's book, The Whole Piet Diet, to see which diet your animal(s) prefer. I have three pets, two 13-yr. old cats and one 1 1/2-yr old terrier. The cats had been eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some canned Friskies. The terrier was eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some raw meat, veggies, yogurt, etc. I recently learned that dry food is difficult for pets to digest and is terribly drying and causes digestive problems like vomiting, dandruff, etc. The Friskies is just plain junk food so I decided that I was going to feed healthier fare and bought both books (Dr. Pitcairn wrote the foreword in Andi's book). While Dr. Pitcairn promotes primarily raw meats with cooked whole grains, Andi Brown promotes cooked stews (grains included for dogs only, not cats). After experimentation, I found that my dog and one cat prefer Dr. Pitcairn's recipes and my second cat prefers Spot's Stew (from Andi's book). When I made the switch, I only started feeding the recipes without supplements to the cats. It took 15 days for them to eat consistently, then I started adding the supplements in small amounts and gradually built up to the daily recommended amounts. Tip: my cats preferred Andi's supplements over Dr. Pitcairn's (especially the essential fatty acids in the form of oils). All of my pets are doing very well on the diets but only because I was persistent in finding what worked best for each pet. I will never feed dry food again!
It's a shame..........2007-08-29
...that an obviously experienced and well researched vetrinarian would recommend a diet that includes grain as one of the staples of the diet. Anyone who does even a minor amount of research about the special diet needs of a dog would easily find that dogs do not possess the proper enzymes to break down grain properly and can lead to either minor or serious allergic reactions. Dogs should not eat any type of grain at any time. Anyone who reads this book, do not take it as gospel. Please do more in-depth research before you make any solid decisions on your dogs diet.
Besides that fault, there are only a few recipies included in this rather long book. I heard very good things about this book before I bought it and was thoroughly disappointed after I read it. Its hard to give this book anything else but a negative review.

Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16
The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.
If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.
A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14
Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!
Exellent Book.......2007-05-11
Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.
Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27
This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.
This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.
The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.
Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04
This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

underwhelmed.......2007-02-06
I was expecting more of this little book. It certainly tells you how to make bagels and I guess there's only so much you can say about boiled bread dough . I wanted more about process and less filler than this book supplied. Still I think it would do just fine for someone with a passing interest in a little novelty baking, as its recipes are workable and fun.
bagels galore.......2006-06-25
I just received this book in the mail and cannot wait to get started on my first batch of bagels! The author has a great variety of recipes (much more than I was expecting!), plus a great selection of normal to unique spreads for your bagels. I am particulary excited about the recipe for curing my own lox, which is next to impossible to get (especially decent lox) in the small town that I live in. With what appear to be nicely detailed instructions, including a trouble-shooting section, I think this book is going to be getting quite a bit of use!
The best bagels are made at home.......2000-03-12
One of my favorite books. The recipes are great .Now without a bagel store just around the corner I can bake my own homemade bagels. Donna is right, the best bagels are really made at home. Freshly baked and lukewarm eaten is one of the best things of life.

I've tried recipes in other bagel books and they were all more like Easter bread. These taste like store-bought bagels only better

Here is ample opportunity to rediscover the satisfactionof saying "I made it myself"
Really great Wedding Gift.......2001-02-26
This book was one of the best wedding gifts that I received. In the grand tradition of Reader's Digest, this book distills several sweeping topics into small bites -- just the highlights. It begins with a section on cooking (canning, preserving, condiments, desserts, and a sumptuously generous section on ice cream!).
The book then forays into projects for "around the home" offering a crash course in design/decorating for your home as well as useful techniques to use in decorating your home. Selected projects involve decorative techniques for painting walls, refinishing furniture ("reviving") with paint, window treatments, making decorative touches such as throw pillows and braided rugs, and many more. This chapter emphasizes using existing pieces of furniture, revamping them to give them a new look, while not costing a great deal of money. Some of the projects are simple, and some are more advanced, but the book takes you through each one step by step. Also included in this chapter is a very useful section on natural cleaners with recipes for more than thirty household cleaners.
We then move into the beauty and body-care section, in which many more recipes for bath and body products are given. Most of these use easily attainable ingredients, however, most will only last a short period of time and must be whipped up every time you wish to use one. Examples of recipes: hand cream, herbal deodorant, summer body splash, soaps, cold cream, lip gloss, face masks, toothpaste, men's cologne & aftershave, shampoos, perfumes, and natural home remedies.
Pets and wildlife receive treatment in the next chapter, which showcases projects that benefit our animal friends. Think dog houses & beds, coats, cat seats & perches, fancy collars, birdhouses & birdbaths, as well as butterfly and bat houses. The next chapter continues in the same vein with yard and garden projects. Instructions abound for gardens: kitchen, herb, raised bed, even the home orchard. Other more unusual topics are addressed, with the section on topiary, ponds, paths and edgings, compost, and garden trimmings (lanterns, homemade pots, repainted pots & pot stands).
The last chapter is a general crafts section, with instructions on making stamps, quilting, sewing, knitting, drying & arranging flowers, basket-making, and many other techniques. The book also includes short sections on decorating for Christmas, gift card making, and gift wrapping.
All-in-all, this is a great survey book, and will give a reader enough to pique his/her interest in many different areas. It doesn't go too in depth in any subject, but if you do find something you are really interested in, there are always other books.
Home Made Best Made: Hundreds of Ways to Make All Kinds of U.......2000-04-15
I love this book! No, I probably won't make my own toothpaste, but there are recipes for it! Plus sauces from scratch, easy to follow instructions on making jams and jellies, chicken stock, fish stock, fish sauce, lollipops (on a stick!), syrups, eggnog, punch, sorbet, ice cream recipes to die for. Then there are chapters on floor painting, stenciling, appliquing, recovering chaircushions, making picture frames, birdhouses, plant your garden of flowers and herbs, make kids' magnets, knit a sweater, decorate your house. I could go on and on - the reading is interesting and there are many projects to do with kids or grandkids or by yourself. I recommend this for anyone wanting some simplicity in projects and making things from scratch - wanting to do something different - and you don't have to be an expert at any of it. There are even recipes for cosmetics, lip balm, etc. Great gift for the other women in your life like daughters and daughters-in-law and best friends too!
One of the Best and Easiest.......1999-05-25
Thought this would be another artsy-craftsy thing. Great reference. Great projects. Love the cosmetics !

Good coffee table book..........2007-05-03
What it lacks in substance, it makes up for with pretty pictures. For historical zealots (such as myself) this book will leave you hungry for more information about Colonial homes and their historical roots, but for what it is, it's pretty decent. This book has good artwork, clean pictures and an interesting array of different Colonial styles.
That being said, I was profoundly disappointed in the book's lack of images and information on the ubiquitous Colonial Revival. That was my reason for buying this book, as I wanted to learn more about that style of housing. "Colonial Style" had very little on this incredibly popular genre (and derivation) of domestic architecture.
Then again, I am a purist. If you want some decorating ideas and like to look at pretty pictures of old Williamsburg-era Colonials, you'll love it.
Excellent, taken as a whole.......2007-02-19
This is a book which explores (mostly) middle class home interiors of the 18th and early 19th century. Yes, there are some odd digressions, but by and large it's a fine work brimming with great photos and ideas, mostly taken from original homes. This book is a solid effort, showing what appropriate 18th century interiors should look like when cleaned up in a modern restored house, or a recreated one. Those who like authentic interiors will like this book. Those who do not want an authentic interior, but want to mix and match taking a bit of this and a bit of that, but still want to call it colonial, will possibly find these interiors "dark and provincial". Well - news flash: 18th century middle class and lower class interiors in North America were, by their very nature, both dark (candle light, small windows, soot, dark paint) and provincial (being the colonies, after all). The word colonial has its own cachet, and many people insist on applying it to their house, no matter what kind of eclectic mish mash it is.
too rustic for my taste.......2005-07-04
This book has pretty pictures, but focuses on a more rustic colonial home. Think charming, yet squeeky, New England Inn. I was hoping for some pictures and ideas for a more "updated" Colonial with larger rooms. A little less "shabby chic" and more "classic decorating".
I only write this review to guide others. The book is nice and is perfect for that person who likes the older, historic-feeling home.
Great ideas and inspiration.......2005-06-19
As proud new owners of an antique home in Marblehead, MA -- built circa 1720 -- we were thrilled to find Treena Crochet's "Colonial Style." It helped greatly in getting our creative juices in motion. And the author even took time to respond to my e-mail inquiry about a ceiling issue which had us stumped. The book is a real pleasure to own -- just like our antique home! Ann and Mike
Good for some ideas........2005-05-19
I'm a traditionalist in the sense that I want to preserve the integrity of my old house 1765, and I'm looking at options with regards to bringing some of the old feel within a newer addition.
I actually thought this book had more actual period interiors, but they're a combination of some old with more new construction approximating the look of old with varying degrees of success.
What I feel is successful is retaining period color and contruction to mimic the period. I'm all for modernization where appropriate but not at the expense of destroying the fabric of history for modern convenience. To haphazardly mimic a style becomes mere embelishment which is fine in new construction but unconscionable distruction to an actual historic property.
18th century or 17th century structures didn't use bright colors and lighting. Part of the charm in an actual period home is viewing the environment as it was ment to be viewed. Much like the distain people have for colorized films, so goes bright overhead lights in a 18th century colonial keeping room.
The warm glow of candlelight or there aproximating that allows the room to feel as it was. (why and where blue, red, green etc. were or were not used and why).
On the otherhand, juxtaposing contemporary modern convieniences within an attached modern structure (relatively speaking) or renovation a disintigrating section, while intergating and leaving the old as art and accent from old can be a wonderful contrast in texture and environment.
This book is more along the lines of renovation, maybe restoration is a stretch but you might get some helpful photos. It's definitly not in the preservation category.
Overall I've gotten some descent ideas for my renovation project.
