When her English teacher, Mrs. Dunphrey, announces that she will require everyone to keep a journal, Tish Bonner sighs and fidgets. She's one of those girls with big hair who sits in the back of the classroom, giggling and passing notes to friends instead of paying attention. Frankly, school is a waste of time for Tish. She would rather be working to help support herself and her younger brother. (Goodness knows her mother never lifts a finger to help them.) Mrs. Dunphrey says that she won't read any student's entry marked "DO NOT READ." Should Tish believe her? Much to Tish's surprise, journal writing becomes a welcome--yet frightening--outlet for the increasing stress she feels about life at home. Should she write about everything she's feeling? Will Mrs. Dunphrey really respect her privacy? This novel offers teens a realistic view of a young woman's life spinning out of control. Tish has real heart, and the way she faces her problems will inspire readers.
Book Description
Things are so bad, I feel like I'm going to explode if I don't do something...
Everyone has to keep a journal in Mrs. Dunphrey's English class, but the teacher has promised she won't read any entry marked "Do not read this." It's the kind of assignment Tish Bonner, one of the girls with big hair who sit in the back row, usually wouldn't take very seriously. But right now, Tish desperately needs someone to talk to, even if it's only a notebook she doesn't dare let anyone read.
As Tish's life spins out of control, the entries in her journal become more and more private...and dangerous. Is she risking everything that matters to her by putting the truth on paper? And is she risking more by keeping silent?
Customer Reviews:
A non-stop reader........2007-09-17
I liked this book overall, but I didn't like that the girl in it didn't really interact with anyone else much. The other good part is that the journal entries were short which made me, also, not want to stop reading.
Still thinking...........2007-09-05
I just finished this novel and I'm very unsure about what I think. I am a language arts teacher who believes that journaling is very important. I don't believe I could offer my students the option to write, turn it in, and not read the material. My heart broke for Tish as I read the story as my heart breaks for some of the students I have. As a teenager I think I would love the novel, as a teacher I'm not sure Mrs. Dunphrey met her legal obligations by not reading the journal.
Family in Crisis.......2007-02-23
An English teacher, teaching high-school sophomores, requires her students to keep a weekly journal and write in it at least four times over the course of the week. She has said that if students write "do not read this" on any entry, she will not read it; she will simply make sure they have written something and give them credit.
This book is the journal of Tish, a student in this class. Tish is living with a mother who is mentally ill and a brother who is eight years younger than she is. Her abusive father left a couple of years ago. Tish is initially reluctant to write anything meaningful or personal in this journal, but after she tests her teacher and makes sure that she really isn't reading the entries marked "do not read," Tish begins to let her feelings show in her writing.
Through these journal entries, we get the full story of Tish's life and her struggle to be the adult in her family, to take care of her mom and brother. When Tish's father shows up after being gone for two years, Tish's journal entries get scarier and scarier, and it is increasingly disturbing to see that she is not sharing these stories of her life with anyone who could help her.
I liked the journal format of this story, and I felt like we got a good idea of what the other characters were like just by reading Tish's point of view. I felt sad for Tish and her brother, and I was disturbed that nobody realized what was going on in their lives.
The Journal.......2007-02-17
This book is about a teenage girl who takes care of her bother. Her mom is still there; she just works a lot. She had a good life until her dad came along and ruined it. Now she is writing in a journal that her teacher assigned her. One year later her mom finds him driving around the road. So she invites him to the house, and ruins her life. Would she live?
I love this book because it shows me how other people think and what their life is like. It also makes people want to think twice about things and how they are blessed that their mom and dad love them. Another thing I like about this book is it's a journal and it's a good way to keep your secrets in because its in your brain. Writing is a good way to let it out because you can let your mind be free, but you don't have to write secrets that you don't have to share. I think I would give it a five!

Easter Eggs by Matthew.......2007-07-14
I was very disappointed in Matthew Mead's book. I was looking forward to it because I enjoy all of his ideas and have used several of his ideas myself. But don't waste your money on this one. I didn't feel inspired at all !

The Art of Decorating Eggs.......1999-12-26
Not your usual egg decoration book, but an excellent addition to the egg decorator's library. This book has many interesting techniques but some require drawing skills.
This is a wonderful book.......1999-09-01
I love just looking at this book, the photographs are so beautiful. The only problem is that they look as if you will never be able to recreate them! There are some unusual techniques I had never seen before, such as using vinegar to make holes in the egg, and everything is explained very clearly. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in decorated eggs - it's a great place to start if you want to have a go yourself, and if you just like looking at beautiful objects, there are some on every page.

Book Description
With more than 70 amazingly easy decorating techniques, there’s no “egg-scuse” for letting any egg go naked again, or waiting until Easter, because here are designs that work all year-round. Not one of the crafting skills is beyond a beginner’s grasp: if you can cut, paste, and paint, you can adorn an egg, whether it’s the real thing, or one made from plastic, pâpier-maché, styrofoam, or even wood. Découpage an egg with paper napkins, and finish it with a clear varnish to re-create the look of fine china. Need an attractive door display? Try threading specked quail eggs on silk ribbon along the edge of a charming rustic wreath. From subdued elegance to fabulous funk, there is a wide range of styles to suit every taste.

Exquisite Eggs!.......2006-03-24
A beautiful book! I checked this out from my library, and liked it so much, I bought it here on Amazon. It has so many great ideas for decorating eggs, ranging from the simple, to fairly difficult. My kids and I plan on making some this weekend. And even if we get busy and NEVER make a project from this book, it is so pretty you can leave it on your coffee table during the spring/Easter season. If you like "pretty" books, buy this one today!
VERY disappointing!.......2005-05-24
This was a huge disappointment! I wish I'd bought it from Amazon so I could return it. It does include many variations (albeit not necessarily good ones) - but with VERY sketchy, insufficient directions. Don't waste your money!
Eggstraordinary!.......2004-03-26
Using sometimes as little as two materials, Terry Taylor has prepared a collection of amazing eggs. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of the eggs on the cover; other projects inside include eggs beautiful and elegant enough to grace even the fussiest Easter basket or most formal Easter dinner table. With more than 70 different designs and ideas, there's truly something for everyone in this book. Get it as soon as you can!

Still unsurpassed!.......2005-05-09
This was the first book I ever on this exquisite art, and I bought it waaaaaaaaay back when I was a teenager. I now own many books, magazines, and CDs about this art, belong to both the guild and the mailing list, etc. -- but this remains my personal favorite. The eggs shown are gorgeous and widely varied, and the directions are very clear. You can't go wrong with this book; although a fraction of the cost of most books on the subject, it remains without peer.
The Splendid Art of Decorating Eggs is Splendid.......2005-01-10
I found this book to be an excellent source of inspiration and instuction in the art of egg decoratiing. I am a rank beginner and I found this book to be extremely helpful. Ms. Disney explains in detail all phases of decorating. Whether you are interested in doing detailed carving, or simple embleshment you will find this book helpful and informative. I only wish there were more color photos.
Book Description
This book shows how the simple egg can be transformed into Christmas tree decorations, christening gifts, flowers, jewellery boxes and photograph albums.
Product Description
This is the first book of a series of previously unpublished patterns for the reader to recreate and enjoy. By breaking down the design to its simplest form, you will discover that you can create very complicated and magnificent patterns. As we describe each egg from beginning pencil lines to the final dye bath, the symbolism and color meanings will also be explained.
Customer Reviews:
good patterns, but you'll need more than this.......2004-02-22
If you are a beginner to the art of pysanky, as I am, this book will not be enough to get you started. It gives brief directions and gets straight to the patterns, which are after all the point of this book. The cover has color photos of all the egg designs presented in the book, the inside cover has black-and-white pictures of the sides of the eggs; the pages of the book contain only black and white line drawings of the patterns. The patterns are given step-by-step with a line drawing for each step, but as a beginner I still find some of them a bit confusing. However, they are lovely designs and for more experienced decorators (which I hope to be very soon) I'm sure the patterns and instructions are adequate. Throughout the book, where a certain pattern is used, its symbolism is briefly explained. So, if you are a beginner, get a good starter book - I am finding Jane Pollak's Decorating Eggs to be an excellent learning and inspiration resource.
Book Description
An illustrated guide to every phase of traditional egg decoration: how to select, empty, mark, cut, hinge, paint, sand, and apply decoupage, plus 8 progressively complex projects, from an exquisite Christmas tree ornament to an elegant silk-lined jewel box and a delicate musical bell. Full instructions. 74 line illustrations. 6 photos.
Customer Reviews:
Hopelessly obsolete! Don't waste your money........2005-08-14
This may have been okay in its day, but calls for materials no longer being made (e.g., Royal Egg Sheen), and ignores those available today. There are many excellent books for stark beginners, as well as wonderful mailing lists (see YahooGroups.com). Don't waste your money on this garbage.
excellent beginner book.......2003-11-27
This book is all you need to get started with egg decorating - at least it was for me. Its short (less than 50 pgs)but jamm-packed with what you need to know to get going. The chapters are as follows:
- History (1/2 pg)
- Points to consider (these are just 9 points to kind of encourage you - since eggs will break when youdon't want them to)
- The Egg itself (discusses different types of eggs and shows their sizes)
- Tools (good photographs albeit B/W showing the different tool, describing what each one is - separated into beginners tools and more advanced tools)
- Glues & decorative finishes (talks about all sorts of neat ideas like crackle finishes, powders, stains, epoxy etc)
- Emptying the Egg (talks to two methods - blowing and using an egg blower if you have one and cutting)
- Marking the Egg (using templates, freehand, etc)
- Cutting (using dremel tools, razor blades etc)
- Hinging (for making eggs that open)
- Lining the Egg
- Miscellaneous tips (this is a collection of tips/solutions to issues you might encounter - ex:"Emptying Holes - What to do with them")
- Projects (the last 25 pgs or so covers different sample projects- 8 of them ranging from the single opening egg on a stand to the toothpick holder to the beaded jewel box, I haven't tried the projects - I'm still plaing around with just making decorated eggs that don't open - so I can't comment on the projects per se but the instructions look pretty clear & step-wise)
Overall great book, very straight forward. I wish there were a few more pictures in it and some in color would be nice but its a good book.
If you're a beginning egg artist, this book is for you........2000-05-29
Susan Byrd takes you step by step through eight egg-decorating projects. By the time you've finished the last one, you're no longer a beginner. Her techniques and trouble-shooting ideas really work. A lot of today's egg artists began with Susan Byrd.
Book Description
These eye-catching homemade ornaments, shown in beautiful color photographs, follow in the tradition of Fabergé’s beautifully decorated eggs. “Real goose eggs are cut, hinged, and elegantly embellished...Mounted on miniature stands, the finished eggs are quite exquisite....The results will be heirlooms. Recommended for all public library crafts collections.”—Library Journal.
