    5 out of 5 stars Charming!.......2006-11-22

I do a lot of crafting so don't need a lot of directions, just incredible thought provoking, inspiring, make you feel like you are there breathing the country air, romantic. So... this is one of those books I sift through over and over again, love the book covers with the ties, love the fabrics and the country prints and the sigh...pillows! Absolutely adore this book, so glad I purchased in spite of the reviews. It is trully one of my very favorites what to sew, make with fabric books. Don't be fooled by the 'crafting vintage style, charming projects for home and garden' title, this is all fabric projects, not beeswax candles or other neat ones, but all dreamy blue flowers on white linen, pin stripe, country fabrics that dreams are made of.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, could be better.......2005-08-21

This book has some really nice pictures, and I do love the fabrics she uses throughout.(Cabbages & Roses, out of England.)The book could have been more creative with it's project ideas, and DEFINATELY could have used better "instructions". All that said, I LOVED the ideas for covering sturdy boxes with pretty fabric and for covering books with pretty fabric.

1 out of 5 stars This book is not worth purchasing........2003-05-17

A few pretty pictures and little substance. I purchased this book and her "Decorating Vintage Style". Very few ideas in either book - pretty cover, a few pictures, very little text. Neither are worth the purchase price. If you are looking for a vintage decorating or craft book, any other than these would be a better investment. For example, in the craft book, she shows, with very limited instructions and a picture or two, how to make a duvet cover. Then you use the exact same technique to make a pillow cover. For your next craft, you use the exact same technique to make an herbal slumber pillow. At 92 pages and just a few "crafts", you really are loosing when she spends a quarter of the book "teaching" (very loose definition here) you to use the same technique over and over. I think she was just using filler to get a book out. I was extremely disappointed in both of her books.

You are also given "instructions" on how to make a celebration skirt. Later in the book you find the exact same instructions on how to make a summer skirt. She did the same thing with a few blankets, too. You will not glean any new ideas from this book, I'm quite sure. And if you are a complete beginner at sewing, her instructions are not sufficient. If you are an experienced sewist or crafts person, you've probably already made everything in the book.

The book contains "30 stunning projects that will make a room loving and warm". They are:
Scalloped shelf edging, simple slipcovers, summer curtain, basin skirt (using velcro hang gathered fabric from sink), heart shape cushion (cut a heart shape - stuff), beaded pot cover (trim a piece of fabric with lace and beads - hang over a pot), storage boxes (purchased boxes covered with your fabric), fabric covered basket, greeting cards (fold a piece of cardstock - decorate - my children do this all the time), cozy cushions (instructions repeated throughout book on different projects), clothespin board (nail clothespins to a board), dog blanket, dog bowl mat (cover board with some oilcloth), herbal slumber pillow (same techniques as cushions), duvet cover (basically same technique as cushions), summer skirt, scented sachets - sew a tube, tie with a ribbon, laundry bags (sew a sack - insert a cord)), plaid teddy bear (cut out teddy bear shape - stuff - my children thought it was kind of ugly), celebration skirt (same as summer skirt but embroider with running stitches Merry Christmas (or something else) along hem), tab headed curtains (same as summer curtains basically), fabric roses (strips of unhemmed fabrics gathered into a "rose", gardener's apron (you make your own pattern from looking at her picture), linen-covered journal, frayed napkins (edge stitch pieces of linen and fray. She does not tell you to pull a thread to get these on grain as it will not turn out if you don't), lined picnic basket (using your own pattern cut fabric to line your wire or wicker basket), child's play tent (edge finish some fabric and hang over a clothesline), beach rug (edge finish some fabric). That's it. The same techniques repeated.

Any of my children's crafts books are cheaper and contain much more in the way of ideas and instructions.

    Good points:
The photos are nice, as the author used to be a stylist for magazines. Her fabrics are pretty too. She owns Cabbages and Roses and uses her products throughout the book.

    Book Description

The exquisite and everyday beautiful linens and lace photographed for this book represent collectible household styles made in Europe and North America during the 20th century. Both rare and commonly found examples are included so that readers can learn to differentiate between the two groups. The chapters are organized by types of work, including Appenzell, Battenberg, Bobbin lace, chemical and other machine laces, crochet, cutwork, embroidery, linen damask, explained with origins and copies liberally discussed. The photographs are breathtaking, from over-all room settings to minute details. This is a visually exciting book. The price guide is a valuable tool for this expanding field of collectibles which seem to be undervalued when the quality and supply of fine examples are considered.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative reference book........2000-07-16

I found this book to be extremely helpful in identifying popular linen styles and items for a collector. The pictures were clear and the descriptions sufficient for my needs. This is a good addition to a collector's library.

3 out of 5 stars Musings from thelinenlady on '20th Century Lace and Linens'.......2000-03-24

As a long time linen lover and now professional dealer I find this tombe to be a wonderful 'picture' book ~ but when it comes to actual informative content I feel that there are better sources ~ the information given is helpfull for the beginning to intermediate collector and the pictures are exquisite but somehow the lack of detail in the narrative portions undermines the supossed purpose of the book. To its credit the book is nicely arranged by subject but lacks a comprehensive glossary. Overall, not a bad place to start whet your appetite for knowledge about vintage linens, but if you want detailed informtion supported by anyting more than cursory research you will put the book down hungry. ~ Sincerly, Ann Christine ~ thelinenlady

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Photos and Information.......1999-04-15

As a valuable addition to any lace collector or lace historian's library, this book fits right inbetween Earnshaw's Lace Identification and Elizabeth's smaller simpler volume "A Pocket Guide to Lace and Linens."

The macro photographs of each lace are clear and sharp making it possible to count the number of twists in a particular stitch and identify exactly which features are the identifiable characteristic of each lace. Elizabeth's valuation system for the monetary value and collectability of each type of lace is informative and well reasoned.

For the would be collector, this book along with Earnshaw's are the ones to have at home while the pocket guide is the one to take with you to the flea markets and antique fairs. Not only will you be able to knowledgably indentify what you have, but you will be able to discern how difficult the stitches and techniques are, when and where the lace was probably made and its relative value on today's market.

5 out of 5 stars The very best Lace identification book I've found!.......1999-02-23

This book has one or more pages describing each type of lace. The varieties are extensive. It is so clear and easy to understand what makes each lace unique. The first book I reccomend for those wanting to know about lace!!

    Book Description

Domestic bliss is to be found in a well-stocked linen closet Linens and Lace is about stocking that closet -- and then using its contents to bring comfort and elegance into your home. Tricia Foley, author of the best-selling Having Tea and an expert on fine linens, tells us how to find and evaluate vintage household linens -- the most intimate of antiques. We learn how to judge the age of a piece of fabric, how to spot dams and mends, how to tell machine-made lace from handmade. We learn how to care for our treasures: how to wash, iron, and store even the most delicate scraps of lace. Most of all, we learn, through Lilo Raymond's exquisite photographs, how to use lace and linens at home: An old tablecloth makes a wonderful filigreed curtain against the sun; a star-shaped doily softens the line of a bathroom shelf; a heap of plump little pillows invites us to linger in bed. Every image gives us another inventive and easy way to bring some romance to bed, bath, or table, and a thorough source guide tells us where to find the pieces we'll need (even where to find good contemporary reproductions when antique linens are impractical -- or just too expensive).

For those of us whose fantasy of grown-up life include snowy tablecloths set for dinner, swagged curtains at mullioned windows, and padded clothes hangers trimmed with lace ribbons, Linens and Lace is an essential guidebook.

A must book have for a collector of linens and lace. Rarely, do I find a book with such beautiful photographs, but valuable information from distinquishing manufactured from reproductions, types of lace and choosing a good reproduction. I especially liked the ideas of how to display the linens and lace rather than just tuck them in a drawer. My favorite idea is the use of linens and lace for window treatments. If you love linens and lace, buy this book for yourself and one for a friend. Linens and Lace makes a great gift.

    5 out of 5 stars Thanks Darlene!.......2006-04-08

Ordered this book the first day available. Well written, lots of great pictures, very easy to follow and understand - like Darlene's presentations on HSN. This is pretty basic stuff but since Darlene could sell me sand by the truckload (insofar as sewing) in the middle of the Sahara, well, 'nuff said. Cannot wait until she gets a DVD ready for sale. I just always wonder why, as personable, friendly, helpful, and knowledgable as she is, she stays with this terrible line of products (Euro-Pro) when she could easily speak for any of the top of the line machine companies. Just as good as I hoped for, but be advised - pretty basic stuff. As always, thanks Darlene, and keep those tips coming!

1 out of 5 stars old lace and linens including crochet.......2000-11-10

I MUST AGREE WITH THE FIRST TWO REVIEWS 100%. BUT I BOUGHT IT ANYWAY, TO ADD TO MY MANY OTHER BOOKS. THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT WAS THE PHOTOS. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE UNLESS THEY JUST WANT TO SKIM OVER IT AND ADD IT TO A COLLECTION THEY MAY HAVE.

2 out of 5 stars Small and thus easy to carry for a ready reference........1999-03-05

That the author loves linens is obvious from her narratives. There are some tips on care and history that are worthwhile. Many of the identifications are misleading, and the prices quoted are most frequently inaccurate. The descriptions, although vague, may be a useful starting point for the novice or casual collector, I would not refer this to anyone as a definitive work, but it is useful as an entry level reference.

2 out of 5 stars Bevy of examples covering many styles but inaccurate prices........1999-01-10

First 28 pages are well-written, lyrical descriptions but not terribly historically informative. While there is an extremely wide range of items shown, many photos are reproductions which lose much in the process.

Identification of types is very spotty with even the obvious (hardanger and filet) listed only as drawn work or 'beautifully crocheted corners'. Dating of items seemed fairly accurate but pricing was "not of this earth". Most dollar amounts could easily be halved and one collar on page 43 listed at $55-60 I purchased for $8 from a knowledgable dealer.

This book is useful as an addendum to the library of a serious collector. It is however, of little value to the novice or student because it lacks identifying criteria and the pictures are not high enough quality to decipher detail.

    Book Description

The retrospective of lingerie through the ages offers the admirer and wearer fashion tips by example for making these bare essentials look great so you can feel great. Lingerie is part icon, part turn-on, and an international symbol of feminine mystique.

Author and former fashion stylist Catherine Bardey takes a tasteful and entertaining look at the history, iconography and appeal of women's underwear, from bloomers and emancipation and the evolution of underwear. From the confining corsets of the Edwardian era to the conical shaped bras of the 1950s to the sheer, supportive shapes of today's lingerie, styles have changed dramatically through the decades, influenced by cultural changes as well as sports and the entertainment industry.

Lingerie is lavishly illustrated with over 100 photographs, illustrations, advertisements and ephemera.

1 out of 5 stars star for illustrations only.......2005-03-13

This book's text is dreadful. Incredibly wrong information, ridiculously mislabeled pictures including these "gems":

1)mid 1880's Fashion illustrations captioned as "Fashions from the 1850's as portrayed in Godey's Lady Book" (Having access to Godey's I can also vouch they are most certainly not from Godey's as well. They appear instead to be French- the high quality color printing gives that away.)

2)A Fashion illustration from the later 1820's is captioned "In the 14th century belts and sashes served as waist restraints, prefiguring the more severe cinching that would follow."

3)A circa 1750 fashion illustration is captioned "The 15th century farthingale was so restrictive it disappeared from Europe by the early 1600's"

2 out of 5 stars Great pictures but..........2004-12-24

Unfortunatly the elaborate descriptions and lack of reference to photo's make it difficult to "see" what the author talks about. The pictures in this are all very nice and most importantly I did learn. Thanks

    3 out of 5 stars A nice light read.......2003-03-15

This history is a pleasant little coffee table book, very light to read, and lots of photographs which people might refer to as "tasteful." I don't know how much I really learned about lingerie from reading this book, but I definitely enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the history of fashion!.......2002-09-23

"1900-20: Linen & Lace" is great not only for younger readers, but older readers, as well. Great pictures and facts about this era of clothing. A must for fashion lovers. The rest of the "20th Century Fashion" series is just as good as this book. I recommend.
