The stripes and plaids really add zip to col weather quilts.
The applique placements are spot on and make it very easy. The colour coordination is lovely. I really enjoyed this book; and found it very inspirational. Remy.

This book is a practical handbook for making quilts. It lays out each project with clarity and order. Projects are broken down into sizes, materials needed and also variations in color. The colorful pictures of the quilts help the quilter envision the end product. The templates in the back are useful for creating your own quilt. The book is simply laid out and easy to follow.

Great Reference Book .......2006-01-20
I ordered this book because I was out of ideas and needed some help with slipcovers. I have been sewing for more years than I can count, however, never to old to learn a few new tricks. I found this book to be very helpful, very simple instructions, step-by-step, they assume you are new at sewing, and take each step of the process & add photos so you can see what it is suppose to look like to keep you on track. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to improve their sewing skills and/or new sewers or just looking for good ideas.

Its a good book for beginners, I am a beginner. ALOT of the projects in this book seem like they are from the early 80's (yuck) even though it was published in 2000. If looking for a how-to book this one is good with tips only. MOST of the projects are pillows and window treatments, with only a hand full of other projects. NOT a good book for the younger crowd looking for tips and projects for decorating their home. Or anyone looking for something modern. I personally was very disappointed, and there are book out there that are SO much better.

Very good book, with easy to follow instructions. My only reason for not giving it a 5-star rating was because I would have liked to see a few more curtain/drapery styles than were offered. Lots of really good tips in this book.
Comprehensive Step-by-Step Instructions.......2004-01-29
I wish I had seen this book first! This one reference combines numerous topics in one. What I like best are the step-by-step instructions - with photos! I am new at sewing and being able to see what the steps should look like is extremely helpful. Also, the book covered every type of curtain I could think up does such a thorough job with pillow descriptions that I think of the slipcovers section as an added bonus. If you want to decorate your home with neat and professional looking work, get this book!
Good on Pillows and Windows.......2002-12-25
I love this book , the instructions for pillows are just what I needed and the photos and inspiration for windows are perfect. More attention is paid to other types of decorating though than window treatments. Still this is among my top 5 favorite home decorating books.

More of an Idea Book and there are better ones out there .......2005-12-07
I am reviewing an older edition "The Smart Approach to Window Decor" which I did not find on Amazon site, I guess because there is a new edition out.
I was expecting a book that included many how-to's since this is part of the Creative Homeowner series, but alas, there were few. There is a chapter called "Make Your Own Curtains", but it was only 7 pages. This chapter showed illustrations of:
~how to sew a corner of a curtain
~what the different tops of curtain look like (rod pocket, bow tie, tab, button top) but NO photographs or illustrations on how to make them, just brief text.
~how to make a rosette but no details of tips of integrating it into the valance.
There is a photo of a scarf valance with a rosette, but there is no info on how to attach the one they illustrated to the scarf seamlessly. The photo shown seems to be a rosette that was created with one length of fabric, not two separate pieces.
The pictures were nice, but some of the treatments were quite unattractive. For example, on page 144 there is a dormer window where the illustration shows floor length curtains. The top is on a rod above the window and another curtain rod is at the base of the short window ACROSS the middle of the curtain! On page 140, there is an illustration of a circular window and a straight swag was hung above it! UGLY.
Hopefully, there are improved suggestions for odd-shaped windows in the "New" edition of this book. I am so glad I borrowed it from the library and did not purchase it. I did give it 3 stars because some of the windows were very nice.
Great Photo Reference.......2004-09-25
This is a great book if you need ideas for what kind of window treatment you want. It has beautiful photos of all different types of living spaces and treatments. However, if you are looking for a book that tells you how to make the curtains that you see, this not the book for you. There are not how to instructions provided. This is purely a photo book with brief descriptions - but worth having to get ideas!

You look through some craft books and there might be a couple things you would try... This book has tons of great ideas, and lots of variety. I can't wait to try them all out!

Given the wealth of new books published every year on choosing and making window treatments--curtains, blinds, and so on--there's no reason to invest in Window Decor. For the trouble of stumbling through the book's haphazard layout and sloppy directions (was it even proofread?), readers will be rewarded with projects of curiously dated design. (Notes to Prolific Impressions, producers of the book: Might try being less prolific. Might also try hiring a copyeditor--one who can fix those places where, for example, picture numbers are referred to in the instructions but the pictures themselves aren't numbered. Making a curtain isn't rocket science, but neither is making a book.)
Lots of space in this slim volume is given over to instructions for making padded faux cornices from cornice kits (though these kits come with their own instructions, I imagine) and silly-looking painted plywood window inserts in the shapes of sitting cat, pot of geraniums, picket fence, chickens, that kind of thing--you'll either love them or loathe them. Templates for the painted designs, should you want to use them (the finished projects resemble high-school play stage sets), can be photocopied from the pages.
Thankfully, the quality of the projects is uneven. There are some classic treatments--full-length pleated velvet drapes, swag-and-poufs, gauzy layered curtains--with which you could hardly go wrong. And several of the more unusual ones--rough tree branches tied with leather lacing, pretty tea towels with large buttonholes for the curtain rod, sheer curtains printed with a dragonfly stamp--might inspire you to look beyond chintz, beyond chickens even, for your window treatments. --Liana Fredley

I found this book to be a very useful resource for creating distinctive window treatments. It is extremely comprehensive and covers just about every topic imaginable. It's also well organized and easy to read. There are beautiful photographs on almost every page and plenty of sidebars with useful tips and information. It gave me great ideas not only for windows, but for home decorating in general.
