great book.......2007-09-10
I love this book you will not need to buy another. Its a must have full of info. Love it!!!
Best Breed Specific All Around Manual for Everyone who Loves Cavaliers.......2007-01-10
I found that this book was very correct in most everything it said. Being a breeder myself I am always looking for a good book to send home with my new puppy owner's. I have found it in this book. Every puppy gets this book in their care package and their owner's just love it. The lineage chart is absolutely wonderful. This book has so much information in it that most books do not. All in all this in an excellent book. I give it five stars, more if I could.

Want to start a Cavalier Club for the greater Dallas area.......2006-06-08
I have been searching for a Cavalier Club in the Dallas area and was unable to find one. I'd like to start a club for All the Cavi owners in Dallas. If interested in joining email me at madihabeg@gmail.com. If you know of an existing club in this area, I would appreciate contact info.
And this is a great book for new owners.
syringohydromyelia in Cavaliers--important.......2006-02-08
Please note that this may have been a great book when it was written in 1999, but how any review in 2005 can recommend this book with four stars is beyond me. A very serious genetic disorder in Cavaliers has become TOO common and is found in all bloodlines. This disease, which did not become widely identified in Cavaliers until 2003, should be thoroughly researched by anyone interested in acquiring a Cavalier. It is not in this book. Go into this with your eyes wide open. We love our Cavalier and would not trade him for anything. But he has had major brain surgery at a prestigious university vet hospital, pre- and post-surgical MRI's, and is on expensive medication 3 times daily. He cannot be walked on a leash because of pain, even with the medication. If you want "cutesy" information, buy a book. If you want real information, go on-line.
Added from Cavalier Health on 9/13/2006: "Researchers conservatively estimate that at least 50% of CKCSs have occipital hypoplasia (or caudal occipital malformation syndrome -- COMS), the skull bone malformation believed to cause syringomyelia."
Best general introduction to the breed.......2005-10-16
A good all-round book that covers all the basics on breed history and ownership, with some lovely pictures and a generally encouraging, cheerful tone. The section on first aid is very useful, as are the lists of what a puppy buyer needs to have before the new arrival comes home. Before I got my two cavaliers I read and reread this book with great pleasure and anticipation. Now that I have enjoyed the companionship of my own dogs, have read more of the historical breed books, and generally spent more time around lots of cavaliers, I know the breed and health issues etc forth fairly well -- and on that basis, can confirm that Coile's book remains the best introductory guide for a cavalier owner or prospective owner. While she does get the color inheritence mixed up as noted by another reviewer, this does not reflect on any lack off knowledge of the breed in the rest of the book (I know plenty of breeders who have a hard time remembering color genetics (and anyway, anyone even *thinking* of breeding -- the only point at which this really is important -- should be mentored by a good, experienced breeder and be reading widely on health, pedigrees, etc -- not using a pet owner's guide as a manual!). [...] But this book merits a space on any cavalier owner's bookshelf.

Loved this book!.......2005-08-23
I will soon be an owner of a Cavalier - and I thought this was a very helpful book! I recommend it!
Breeder's Vanity Book.......2004-10-12
This is a typical breeder's vanity book. It has some valuable information, but it is downplays the very important health issues. Cavaliers suffer from major hereditary diseases, such as mitral valve heart disease, the leading killer of the breed, which afflicts over half of all Cavaliers by age 5 years and nearly all Cavaliers by age 10 years, and hip dysplasia, which afflicts over 20% of all Cavaliers and can cause terrible pain and debilitation, and syringomyelia, which causes severe head and neck pain and paralysis to a growing number of Cavaliers. www.CavalierHealth.org
Good introductory book to the breed.......2001-10-15
For those only wanting an introduction to the breed, the book is useful. If you already know a great deal about CKCS, skip this book--it lacks depth.
A Great Little Book.......2001-02-02
I think this book is a must have for anyone interested in this breed and wanting more information. She talks about the history, the health, the care and lots of cute pictures. My mate and I both read it cover to cover and found it very informative and helpful.
Liked it, helpful.......2001-01-24
Helpful in explaining our dog to us. The housetraining part did the trick for us. We were having trouble and now no more accidents.Good advice on alot of stuff. We love our little cav.

Wonderful book with lots of great Cavalier pictures. Good grooming guide. Tells about the temperment of the breed and history. Also includes a very helpful section on potty training. A must have for Cavalier lovers!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very helpful book!.......2007-01-11
This is a very helpful book for learning about your puppy. It's written in a practical way and is easy reading.
Top Quality.......2006-05-10
Norma Moffat, a breeder with a wealth of experience and knowledge, has written a small book full of excellent information not only about the history and temperament of the Cavalier, but also about the realistic work of finding a qualified breeder and caring for the dog from puppyhood. She includes detailed information about preparing for the puppy's arrival, feeding the Cavalier quality food at every age, grooming, avoiding diseases, training, housetraining, caring for a senior dog, and finding more resources for educating yourself. Moffat's writing makes for a quick and useful read, with enough specifics to make her book something of an instruction manual on how to be the pet owner Cavaliers so richly deserve.

Good for Those Thinking of Purchasing a Cav.......2003-04-21
I found a lot of interesting information in this book, but it seemed to be more about dogs in general than the specific breed. In fact, the second half of the book has pictures of other breeds. Overall, I think this book is a nice introduction to the breed but not very informative for those who already are well acquainted with the breed.
I'M SMARTER NOW............2001-11-02
I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH. I DO KNOW A GREAT DEAL ABOUT THIS BREED AND FOUND IT ONE I COULD RECOMMEND TO NEW PUPPY OWNERS AS REQUIRED READING. THE AUTHOR WAS INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING. THE DOGS ILLUSTRATED WERE LOVELY. I AM IN LOVE WITH THE DOG ON THE COVER.....HE IS A REAL "KEEPER."
I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE DISCUSSION ON A RAW DIET AND MANY OTHER TOPICS NOT USUALLY COVERED IN AN INTRODUCTORY BOOK.
Not what I was looking for.......2001-01-24
This started out good, but then strayed from the king charles. I did get some good info. I liked the pictures.
Switched Dogs in the Middle.......2000-05-29
The first half of the book is devoted to material about CKCS, the remainder on training, habits shows other dogs. It is a little disconcerting when you buy a book about a specific dog, and end up reading about the training of other canines.
A Reader/Cavalier Owner from San Diego, California.......2000-05-28
This wonderfully written book, contains all the information on could possibly want on this marvelous little dog. Since, all breed differ somewhat, it's very helpful to have details on the behavior, health as well as details of all facets of this dog. This book will be a reference for years to come.
Book Description
One of the world's most popular and beloved toy breeds, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a lively, sporting little dog with the confidence and personality of a dog many times his size. A refined pure-bred, the Cavalier boasts a long, silky coat in four traditional color varieties and a pleasing personality that makes him ideal for almost every owner. Whether you live on a farm or on the 44th floor in a city high rise, the Cavalier makes a terrific choice for a companion dog.
British dog authority and author, Juliette Cunliffe has authored a most informative and entertaining guide, providing all you need to know about the Cavalier's history in England and the US, the breed's character and standard, as well as puppy selection, feeding, training, preventative health care and behavior. New owners will welcome the author's insight on housebreaking, puppy-proofing and preventing and solving puppy problems. In addition to an authoritative, comprehensive text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive.

Not worth it!!!.......2006-08-02
It states potential house-breaking problems but not how to address them. It is not helpfull at all. Out-dated. You're better off getting a cheaper guide book than this one!!!
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.......2006-01-30
I thouht this book was very well written and informative. John Evans, an Englishman is very well versued regarding Cavalier King Charles. He gives you some great ideas that he has used regarding homoeopathic applications that can help keep your Cavalier healthy and not have to run to the Vet for every minor problem. I highly recommend this book to pet and show people alike!
This book is wonderful, full of common sense & warmth........1999-11-26
This is THE book to read if you own a Cav. or are thinking of buying one. The author writes with warmth and a sound knowledge of the breed, gained through years of successful showing and breeding of these lovely dogs. The chapters on breeding and puppy raising are a must for anyone contemplating this avenue. Of particular appeal is the chapter on natural remedies for just about any ailment your dog may suffer from. Whether your Cav. is a pet or a show dog, I cannot recommend this book highly enough, it's wonderful.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Book.......2006-02-07
I found the pictures in this book one of the best features. Also, it's ONLY about Cavs, which I also liked. A lot of books today have a "general" guide to training and raising a puppy (of any breed). This book focuses just on Cavs. The BEST part about this book is the information it gives on breeding. It's not included in many guide books these days. If you're interested in breeding your Cav, this book has a good start for you on information you'll need to know. Five stars.
down to earth information.......2003-08-27
Covers just about everything you would need to know about a Cavalier. I highly recommend it if you are considering adopting one. It is easy to read and understand.

good book, but with room for improvement. .......2007-03-09
I recently started learning ImagOn to make etchings based on my photos. Keith is probably the most knowledgeable person regarding this medium, and I'm signed up to take a workshop with him in May. I got this book in anticipation of the workshop.
The book has very useful information, especially about making plates, doing test exposures and development, and how to work with Akua Inks. I immediately learned a great deal that I think will improve my printmaking (such as not soaking paper for long when using Akua and also how to properly ink and wipe down a plate).
The place where I found the book less useful and less clear is in making photo transparencies using photoshop and an inkjet printer--which is the technique I'm most interested in. There are methods shown using two different printers, but since I don't have either of these, I'm at a bit of a loss as how to proceed.
What would be helpful would be an explanation of what you're trying to achieve (for example, is it a certain grain pattern or density, or level of opacity in my transparencies?) so that it could be more universally applied regardless of which printer you're using. But the book jumps right in to the technique without any explanation. There are other sections about making plates for 4-color prints which offers some info, but overall I didn't find this topic clearly presented.
I, like others, also found numerous typos and errors, and the layout inconsistent. For example, at one point, I found an 'o' spelled with a zero, which is pretty tacky. There are also some typos where I find myself guessing at what the real meaning is, and though I'm probably right, its still leaves you feeling a bit confused.
In summary, some very good material here, and I hope that any future versions will fix the obvious flaws. I'm still looking forward to learning much more from Keith in a workshop, but I really had hoped the book would have gotten me further along before that.
David.
Good ideas, bad writing.......2006-04-11
This book has tons of great ideas and techniques, but is terribly written, organized and edited. Surprisingly, this is the second version of this text, and the first ("Non-toxic Intaglio Printmaking") is far superior. This version needs to be totally reworked to make it readable and useable. Look for the first version or another book...
High degree of useful, excellent information, but some flaws.......2006-04-01
Howard's book contains much information on this subject which you will not find (at least readily) anywhere else. The methods are presented very clearly, "almost as if he expected you to be able to do them, also" -- cynicism intended -- as it is indeed clear that he is trying to teach and have you learn.
There is no substitute for this book currently available.
Howard is personally responsible for much of the advance of the state-of-the-art in non-toxic printmaking, for which we should be grateful. However, that leads to one of the flaws of the book: Things are presented in rather absolute terms, implying that "this way, my way, is the only way". I realize that Howard invented a number of these methods, but, as an inventor myself, I have long since become accustomed to the fact that just because I invented something new, which no one else was able to get to work previously, I have definitely not proven that the thing I invented was either the "only", let alone the "best" method. Far from it! Being the first to get something "to work" means that you are about to see a flood of improvements and variations, of which you would never have thought.
Another flaw is this: It is clear that companies like Olec helped Howard out quite a bit in his experimentation over the years. And the book, for example, in places, almost reads like an ad brochure for Olec equipment. That doesn't mean that the Olec equipment is not fine equipment; rather, the opposite: it is indeed fine equipment. But it is not the *only* suitable equipment available; Howard almost makes it sound as if the equipment he recommends is the only equipment which will work.
Another flaw: the editing is absolutely substandard. I don't understand how anyone successfully got the MS out of microsoft word. There are *very* many mis-spellings, etc., which should have been caught.
Another flaw: The writing throughout is very much in the first person. I do understand how that is unavoidable in some places. But I do not understand why that "style" -- in my opinion, inappropriate for a monograph -- was allowed to continue through the entire volume. I would guess that this is not the author's fault, but is a case of poor editing.
