Reviews the scientific methods used to examine artifacts and art objects in order to accurately assess their condition and prescribe care, exhibition and storage. The volume discusses the aging of natural and synthetic polymers such as wool, cotton, silk, paper, wood and polymers used in sculptures, photographs, film and other media. Important analytical methods such as size exclusion, chromatography, viscometry, and gel electrophoresis, are described in assessing damage in silk textiles. Microchemical manipulation, light microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy techniques are described in the analysis of historic cotton fibers, including those from a marine environment. This text also introduces laser surface profilometry as a novel technique for the examination of polymer surfaces. Also included is a comparison of natural and artificial aging effects of cellulose acetate artifacts as followed by FTIR spectroscopy and ion chromatography, and the applications of light microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy to distinguish between oil and acrylic painting media. All the information provided can be taken straight to the workplace and will be and extremely useful book for those working in the preservation of historic objects.

It has few really nice photos to view over and over again but that's about it and after you flip thru some actual lamp pages you begin to wonder... I don't see any plans or projects offered by this book as it has only photograhs of rooms with lights on. Don't waste your money on this.

A good over view of how watercolor caught on in America and rose to the standard of English work in that medium. Worth getting for the chapter on William Trost Richards, who really ought to be part of an American Watercolor Triumverate, along with Homer and Sargent. There are out of print monographs on Richards but this seems to be the best place to see examples of his work if you can't get your hands on them.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Use of the National Ignition Facility with green light as the laser output is an intriguing option for advanced applications ranging from inertial fusion to production of compact x-ray sources. Particular attention is given to the potential use of 0.53 micrometers light to produce a high-energy x-ray source. This application requires the efficient generation of high-energy electrons which can subsequently produce high-energy x-rays as they transport into gold or other high Z wall. One- and two-dimensional computer simulations are used to explore high-energy electron generation by intense 0.53 micrometers laser light in a plasma with density near one-quarter the critical density. Significant absorption is shown to occur into high-energy electrons with an effective temperature which is reduced by the development of ion fluctuations. The results compare favorably with some recent experiments using 0.53 micrometers light.
