The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
A big happy frog, a plump purple cat, a handsome blue horse, and a soft yellow duck-- all parade across the pages of this delightful book. Children will immediately respond to Eric Carle's flat, boldly colored collages. Combined with Bill Martin's singsong text, they create unforgettable images of these endearing animals.

A+.......2007-09-30
I've used this book (the hard cover version) to teach English to my Kindergarten English Language Learners. They like it! I also give this as a gift to my friends' pre-schoolers. It's a keeper.
Addicting!.......2007-09-27
From the day we purchased this book, my daughter asks for it EVERYTIME she lies down for a nap or bedtime. I quickly learned it by heart so I could tell her the story in the dark (many times she will fall asleep before I finish). My husband however just changes the story a little bit. My daughter can now read it to us (only 21 months old) and does so often. This book has really helped her learn her animals and colors. I will be giving this book for a shower gift from now on.
Eric Carle.......2007-09-23
Anything by Eric Carle is excellent. This is my son's favorite book. He's 3 and know every animal before we get to the page.
Wonderful for 12mo olds!.......2007-09-20
We bought this for our daughter for her first birthday. The text is simple, teaching colors and animals. The illustrations are, of course, beautiful. She loves this book!
Inspires reading.......2007-09-09
My 3-year-old granddaughter found this book easy to memorize. She loved being able to anticipate which animal would be next, along with its color. This, in turn, gave her the feeling of being able to read, and I believe it was this book that inspired her to learn how to read "for real" in the next few months. I'd recommend it for younger children as well.

The Little Fur Family.......2007-08-23
This is the sweetest little childrens book I have ever seen. I have bought several of them for my grandchildren and friend's grandhildren. And although I'm 81 I'm not ashamed to say that when I'm feeling sort of low I read it myself, too, and it just makes me feel better all over.
A Childhood Favorite.......2007-05-09
This is a biased review because I absolutely loved this book as a child. I purchased the Little Fur Family Deluxe Edition to give to my child because I love the story and I love the illustrations. This is an endearing little tale and the illustrations are sure to appeal to any child.
not what I was expecting.......2007-04-19
I thought I was buying the really tiny one (which I love) but this is a larger furry version. It is nice. I am going to give it as a gift. But the little one is more special and I wish they had the size in the description. I ended up getting the correct size where I could see it... But this is wonderful story for little kids. They really like the furry cover (but so did my dog, so make sure you keep it out of reach if you have a dog that likes to chew) and the story is very calming. A good bedtime story.
Perfect Furry Little Story.......2007-03-23
I read this story to my niece and nephew and now I read it to my daughter. It's a sweet little story about a little fur family (duh!) but what makes this edition so special is the faux fur cover! It's soft and fuzzy and pocket sized ... making it a perfectly little cozy story to read at bedtime! Like all of Margaret Wise Brown's books, it's a quiet tale, full of love.
Warm as toast, smaller than most...........2007-01-10
This is a little known gem from Margaret Wise Brown, of 'Goodnight Moon' fame. It is a small furry book that tells the story of a day in the life of a little fur child who lives in the wild wood with his mother and father and not too far from his grandpa. The little fur child explores his surroundings and the other animals that live in the wild wood, and then, as the darkness gets a little too dark, he heads for home to the warmth and safety of his parents. I love the melodic quality of the prose, and I often give it as a gift to new parents. The furry cover, the story and the wonderful lyric quality make it a perfect snuggle time reading choice!
Book Description
Bear is very big, very brown, and very busy. His tree house could use a little sprucing up, so Bear heads up the ladder with a plan and a bucket of paint. But Little Bear has a plan, too--including a little mischief that brings Bear (and his blue paint tumbling down to earth. With gentle rhymes and humor, award-winning author and illustrator David McPhail creates a cheery and bumptious bear hug of a story.
Customer Reviews:
brown bear is now blue.......2007-02-15
Big Brown Bear climbs up the ladder to do some painting. Down below Little Bear is busy playing. An accident happens when the ball hits Big Brown Bear and he falls down. So does the paint! Now Brown Bear is no longer brown. Now he's covered in blue paint!
The book was quick and easy to read. Young readers will enjoy the cute illustrations. The text is written in English as well as Spanish.
I would recommend this book to kids 5-8. It is part of the "Green Light Reader" series.
Cute Reader with A Funny Story - a review of "Big Brown Bear".......2006-02-15
Big Brown Bear is getting ready for something, but what? He has a can of blue paint and a ladder and he is going somewhere, but where? Oh, he is going to paint his little bear's tree house, but watch out!
Paint goes everywhere in this silly story where little bear seems to have a penchant for surprising Big Brown Bear at the wrong moment. And my son (just turned four) thinks it is hysterical.
Four Stars. Excellent artwork. Fun story as judged by one boy and one girl - 4 and almost 6 respectively. Text is just right for beginning readers with a little experience under their belts. An example of text follows so you can judge for yourself.
Bear gets paint.
The paint is blue.
Bear goes up.
The paint goes, too.
Little Bear is playing.
She has a bat.
Oh no! Little Bear!
Do not do that!
Big Brown Bear (Green Light Readers).......2000-09-02
This is a great beginning book. Ny first grader really enjoyed it. He was able to manage most of the words in the book, yet it was not too easy. He thought it was funny and enjoyed predicting what the bear would do next. He summed it up at the end by saying "this book was really cool!"

Customer Reviews:
This is the most informative book about bears ever!.......1999-08-17
Anyone who is ever remotely interested in bears should read this book. It is suitible for all ages. I found it to be very informative and easy to understand. Anything you want to know about bears is in this book!
Book Description
A spectacular journey into the heart of bear country, with more than 175 full-colour photographs, from the authors of
Grizzly Heart. The moments of unexpected communion they’ve captured on film will change the way you think about bears forever.
What if the thought of encountering a grizzly bear filled you with anticipation and wonder? What if you knew a bear her whole life, and the bear treated you as a welcome friend whenever you visited? What if bears themselves could be free to live as they were meant to, enjoying nature’s splendour and not fearful of gun-bearing humans?
Not everyone can live the dream, but at least two people (and many more bears) have. For seven years, renowned naturalist Charlie Russell and his partner, artist Maureen Enns, have spent summers in the remote wilderness of Kamchatka, Russia. Home to the densest population of brown bears in the world, the region is also home to Russell and Enns’s unprecedented first-hand study of the kinds of relationships that can exist between bears and humans.
The authors’ first book together,
Grizzly Heart, told the unforgettable story of their work with Kamchatka’s brown bears. Now comes
Grizzly Seasons, a stunning array of photographs of these captivating and elusive creatures. Central to their project are three bear cubs -- rescued by Russell and Enns from a squalid Russian zoo -- who are reintroduced to the wild and allowed to grow into the wild animals they were meant to be. We also meet other bears face-to-face, who over the years have come to accept, and at times even embrace, the couple’s presence.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading Title.......2006-04-03
This is not a book about bears, this is a book about the authors, their problems and emotions--and about Mr. Russell's plane... What they have to say about the bears they set free would barely fill one chapter in all.
If you really want to know what it's like to raise orphan cubs in the wild, if you want to know about bear behavior, bear biology, and how to teach people to coexist peacefully with bears, read Benjamin Kilham's book "Among the Bears".
With beautiful color photos.......2004-01-09
Charlie Russell and Maureen Enns' Grizzly Seasons portrays the summers spent by the authors in Russia's wilderness. Here is the densest population of brown bears in the world - and here is an exciting, captivating account of the authors' observations, paired with beautiful color photos by Enns.

Book Description
At its height British toymaking was a significant industry, with famous names such as Britains and Meccano known throughout the world. While in essence a specialised form of small-scale engineering, its products and market have always been unique, reflecting the current priorities of both parents and children. Yet, while individual toys and marques have been catalogued extensively, no previous history of toymaking as a whole exists. The British Toy Business provides a fascinating example of the development of a specific industry. Many early early toys were home-made. From the eighteenth century, with its growing recognition of children as something other than small adults, date the beginnings of specialised toys, usually produced by small workshops and sold by street-sellers. The nineteenth century, with its industrial growth and middle-class prosperity, saw an expansion of toymaking. The 1960s and 1970s were the most successful years of British toymaking, with companies like Lesney making record profits. Yet British toy makers failed to solve a number of fundamental problems. Following an unexpected sudden downturn in sales at a time of high interest rates, the major names in British toy making, Lesney, Airfix, Mettoy and Dunbee Combex Marx, all collapsed between 1979 and 1985, leaving the business to be dominated largely by importers.

Customer Reviews:
If you have never hunted bear, how do you write the book?.......2007-02-01
I try to consider myself an open minded person. When Isaw that this book was written by a female author I was a bit intrigued by the prospect of reading a book about hunting my favorite game written from the point of view of a female hunter. The author's biography page says of Kathy Etling, "...she is also a longtime, seasoned bear hunter who pursues her quarry throughout North America." Then in the text of the book she makes the disclaimer that she has NEVER hunted bear.
Otherwise the book is OK. It is generally information culled from other sources. It is more of an undergraduate research paper than an authoritative guide for a beginning bear hunter, much less a seasoned bear hunter.
I give it 2 stars because it could have been worse, but it could have been much, much better.
Excellent and Comprehensive!.......2003-12-12
Etling knows large predators, that much is certain. I've read her two-volume work "Bear Attacks" and also "Cougar Attacks: Encounters of the Worst Kind." She is an excellent researcher and has left no stone unturned in order to find the best information for the bear hunter and then to report it in the fewest words possible. In other words, she cuts through the crap.
Her sources are extraordinary, too. From reading her books on bear and cougar attacks it's clear that she has gleaned her information from every notable large predator biologist in North America, as well as famous bear hunters like Warren Parker, the former leader of SCI.
From biology to evolutionary behaviors to tactics, reading sign, choosing the right gun or bow, hiring an outfitter, hunting from a float plane, skinning your trophy, and preparing it for the table, Etling's covered it all, and yet the book sells for a reasonable price.
I've hunted bears all over the world and I know I was impressed. Reading Etling's book just makes me want to book yet another bear hunt.
Cut and paste job.......2003-09-25
I just have doubts about a book which claims to be a comprehensive guide to bear hunting written by a hunter who has never, EVER hunted bear... I mean why don't I write the book, I'm no expert, but at least I've been bear hunting a couple of times. While I'm at it I'll write the "comprehensive guide to Safari hunting for lions" or even Tigers!!! Who cares if I haven't hunted them (or ever will in the case of tigers) I can write a book about it.
The only thing redeming abou the book is that much of it is a cut and past excepts from other bear hunting books and articles by other writers, covered with a bad intro like, Dr. Ken Nordburg says .... That information is good and solid, but why do you need this book to say it? I mean why don't I just buy the other books. Needless to say I returned it...
Book Description
Readers will learn to re-create the unmistakable style of 16th and 17th century needlework with this collection of Elizabethan-inspired cross stitch designs.
Talented cross-stitch designer Barbara Hammet has carefully researched and re-worked the look of the embroidery of the period to offer:
* 25 traditionally inspired designs skillfully brought up-to-date for today's stitcher
* Metallics, beads and other decorative techniques incorporated into several projects
* A 10-page motif library that provides additional inspiration
* Easy-to-follow color symbol charts for each design
* The historical inspiration behind each piece of work
Designs feature the elaborate depiction of flowers, plants and animals, and the intricate scroll- and latticework favored at the time. Much inspiration has been derived from the textiles, clothes and accessories of the day, while further decorative touches such as pearl beads and blackwork add hints of authenticity.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Cross-sticth book.......2007-01-11
I like the patterns, they are easy to read and follow. The pictures/diagrams are lovely and they gave you other ideas on using parts of the patterns.
Whether experienced or a beginner, this is a great book........2006-12-22
It seems that I am one of those folks who just can not seem to sit idly by. Most of the time when I am watching television, I will be found with some crocheting in hand, a pasttime that helps to make me feel like I am not wasting so much time. And then there is counted cross stitch. Over the years I've collected many books on the topic, and completed more projects than I can remember.
So what is it about Barbara Hammet's book, Elizabethan Cross Stitch that makes me recommend it so heartily?
Hammet begins with an introduction, discussing how the Elizabethans (the late Renaissance in England, about 1550 to 1600) used various forms of embroidery on clothing, cushions, and wall-hangings.
Then she moves on to the designs themselves, begining with one of the more beautiful designs in the book. These are arrangements of heartsease -- or what are known now as pansies. Starting with a bookcover with a knotwork pattern and purple and gold patterns, Hammet then breaks up the design to create simpler designs that can be adapted for card inserts, a jar cover -- and from there, the stitcher can let their imagination work to create new ideas. With each project, a complete materials list is given, along with a chart listing three different manufacturers of embroidery thread -- DMC, Anchor and Madeira -- with how many skeins will be needed to complete the project. There is a full colour gridded chart showing the design to be stitched, as well as a photograph showing the final result. Along with the instructions, most of the designs in the book are easily contained on one page, and the layout and design are laid out with enough care that not only is it nice to look at, but very easy to follow.
Along with the heartsease bookcover, there are projects inspired by tapestries, samplers -- which beginning needleworkers would use to explore new techniques and stitches without committing to an entire project, a set of four pillows that use the four seasons as inspiration, box-covers that have blackwork -- a form of counted stitching worked with just black thread on a white surface, a set of freeform designs that incorporate birds, flowers and insects (These I didn't care much for, but the individual elements were nice), a firescreen, and a selection of small bags that can be used to hold gifts, or use as evening bags.
Finally, there is a motif library, with nearly a dozen pages that has various flowers, fanciful creatures, and even a mermaid, charted out for the reader. This is the most innovative part of the book. Presented with clear, large patterns, it is here that the stitcher can let their imagination roam to make their own designs. While suggestions for colours are pretty much left to the stitcher to decide, with a bit of work, some truly beautiful ideas can be come up with.
The last section of the book covers suggestions for materials, techniques and stitches, with plenty of alternates given. One part I really enjoyed with this was the section on finishing projects, something that far too many books leave entirely up to chance, with the instructions on how to use interfacing, framing work and mounting it up for display, going from making bell-pulls and book covers right on down to such humble items as pincushions and tassels. Along with acknowledgements, an author bio, there is a bibliography and index. One of the best parts is a list of suppliers, with not just surface and telephone contacts, but websites as well, which make this book very valuable indeed.
It's not a very big book either, just about 105 pages, but with so many designs, information and ideas, this is one of the best books I have ever come across on this type of embroidery, and one that I can heartily recommend for any skill level.
So whether you are an experienced or a novice at counted cross stitch embroidery, this is an excellent book to start from. The designs are simple and small enough for a beginner to complete and follow without being intimidated. For the more experienced stitcher out there, the use of metallic threads and seed beads give a new way to add dimension and texture to their work.
What I enjoyed best of all was the section in the back where ideas for new designs, and adaptations of actual designs found in English Elizabethan needlework was added. For anyone who has wondered if they could create their own designs it's a wonderful starting point.
Overall, this has proved to be an invaluable addition to my collection of needlework books, and I intend to keep my eyes out for more works by Barbara Hammet to add to my bookshelves. Five solid stars.
Highly recommended.
