Bf 109 Defence of the Reich Aces (Aircraft of the Aces)

Undoubtedly one of the most recognizable fighter aircraft in history alongside the Supermarine Spitfire and the P-51 Mustang, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 is as popular in plastic as in real life. There are almost certainly more kits and accessories of the Bf 109 across the full range of popular scales than any other modeling subject.

This second Bf 109 title in the Osprey Modeling series focuses on the Messerschmitt Bf 109F and early G models, the workhorses of the German Luftwaffe during mid World War II.

The Bf 109 F, Friedrich, was introduced in late 1940 to counter the increasing dominance of the Spitfire, and formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe during the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The Bf 109G, Gustav, was introduced in early 1942, and became the most numerous of all the 109 variants, as well as arguably the most streamlined.

Detailing six different builds across the scales from 1/44 to 1/24, and featuring aircraft in camouflage schemes and markings from the Western Desert to the Russian Steppes, this book is an excellent source of reference for both the beginner and expert modeler, on one of the most effective killing machines of World War II.

With around 32000 aircraft produced, continuous improvement to performance and modification for differing combat requirements meant that identifying a particular variant or sub-type often meant hours of research. This study sets out to describe and portray the differences of all known production variants, revealing myths and anomalies in the process.

This magnificent aircraft first saw action in the Spanish Civil War and by the time of the major German offensives in 1939-40 it was the Luftwaffe's principal fighter. During the Battle of Britain it provided the RAF's Spitfires and Hurricanes with their major opposition. The airplane was notoriously difficult to land because of its narrow undercarriage but during its long service career many models were developed for different theatres of operation. Over 33,000 Bf 109s were built between 1937 and 1945. They saw service on both the Western and Eastern fronts in World War II and dominated the skies over North Africa in 1941.Many air forces continued to fly them after the war, notably Spain. This is the perfect introductory book for the general reader, enthusiast and modeler alike wishing to find a succinct yet detailed introduction to the design and history of the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Why was the aircraft conceived? What was it like to fly on a mission? Who were the people who designed it and became famous for flying it? What were its virtues and vices? These and many more questions are answered here, plus a host of illustrations that show variations of color schemes used in different operational theatres and rare photographs taken when the heat was on.

All I can say is - wow. This book well exceeded my expectations. It has an incredibly detailed 16-page textual history of the Bf109, from its conception in 1934, through its final flights with the Luftwaffe in 1945, followed by almost 40 pages of full-color photographs of some restored 109s both on the ground and in the air. There is a close-up photo of the 109's cockpit, which really helped me to appreciate the cockpit I see all the time in my flight sim. There are several photos of a gentleman dressed out in typical Luftwaffe flight gear, going through the pre-flight checklist and taking off. Very cool.

Incidentally, this is No.5 in the "Living History" series of books. Other aircraft featured are the P51 Mustang, P47 Thunderbolt, the Spitfire, and the B-17, B-24 and Lancaster bombers. Based on the quality of this book, I plan on picking up the rest of the series.

"Bf109, Classic aircraft no. 2, their history and how to model them" (offers a wealth of information about the early Bf109's);
"Messerschmitt 0-nine gallery"(offers a wealth of information about the later Bf109's);
the three books in the Monogram close-up series (Gustav 1 and 2 and Bf109K) and
"The Ausburg Eagle, a documentary history",

but generally these books are bigger and therefore able to pack more information. This doesn't go up for the Monogram series, these are really much sought after!
