Book Description

For years, collecting antiques has been Barbara Ohrbach's favorite pastime. Cherchez, the elegant home furnishings shop she owned in New York City, reflected her exquisite taste and impeccable eye. In this very personal book, she gives practical advice about collecting and living with antique objects. As she says, all of these treasures from the past are what "give a room its personality and style and a house its soul.

"Antiques at Home is filled with more than 300 photographs of beautiful old objects and rooms, and provides a wonderful look at the world of collecting -- from flea markets to elegant stores. Ms. Ohrbach discusses many types of antiques, including ceramics, silver, and textiles. In each chapter, she interviews some of the most respected people in the antiques business and includes tips for what to look for when buying antiques and ideas on how to decorate with them. Each chapter ends with a special section on how to care for and preserve these objects.

Ms. Ohrbach shares her enthusiasm in searching for antiques and tells us where to find them in an international source guide that reveals her favorite antiques shops, fairs, markets, unusual museums, and historic homes. Decorative arts societies, reference books, decorating periodicals, and restorers are also listed.

Beautiful objects that were used and loved in everyday life in the past have become very special to us today. For everyone who has already discovered the warmth that old things bring to our homes, as well as for newcomers to collecting, this book will be a treasured guide.

5 out of 5 stars -Collecting, Living and Decorating with Antiques-.......2003-01-29

For anyone looking for a beautiful and useful book about antiques, this is it. Barbara Milo Ohrbach has a wonderful way with words and her enthusiasm about the world of antiques is charming.

I've owned this book for a number of years, and often refer to it when I want to know a specific terminology or when I'm checking out the care and treatment of a particular antique object. Because the author's writing style is so enjoyable, I always end up reading pages and pages of the book and learning more with each reading.

ANTIQUES AT HOME is divided into eight chapters on the following topics: Ceramics-Wood- Silver- Textiles- Glass- Paper- A Personal View and The Collector's World. The photographs are beautiful and I've borrowed some of Ohrbach's ideas about how to display different collections. Most of us can't collect everything, but the lure of old and beautiful objects is contagious and the author communicates that love in her book. She calls it "a personal view" of antiques.

5 out of 5 stars Living with antiques.......2001-07-13

"It is the loveliness of little things that imparts life to a room." This quote sums up the feeling of this wonderful book. It is filled with hints and tips on finding and caring for antiques and collectible. The joy of combing through flea markets looking for the next perfect addition to your collection is reflected in both text and pictures. The chapters cover ceramics, wood, silver, textiles, glass and paper. What ever makes your heart sing is covered in this book. A nice plus is an index listing of flea market and shop locations in both the United States and Europe. This is a book I go back to and read and look through time and time again, a keeper for your personal library.

This is a "must read" for all of us who love antiques. With every page there are new ideas for "old things." The photography is scrumptous and the text reads like poetry. This book envelopes you. I have been reading it for over a year.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Creative Cloth Doll Making.......2007-09-29

Wonderful book and the dolls are just beautiful. These dolls are unusual with the latest savvy! Not your usual Raggedy Ann's. Includes dolls made by many cloth dollmakers and their perspective of their design which is wonderful reading. Excellent patterns and ideas! I highly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner .......2007-09-27

I guess I wasn't paying enough attention, but I thought I was buying a book which would improve my rag doll making. These cloth dolls are NOT rag dolls, they are rather strange and exotic art/craft pieces. Like a previous reviewer, I am completely unable to find the materials used,so can't get to try the patterns to see if they are do-able. (OK, I do live in a very remote place, but so do lots of people who enjoy crafts.)

Having read the instructions closely several times, I find that a lot of techniques are not explained - there is an assumption that you have a sophisticated sewing machine and are familiar with a lot of sewing, dying and printng techniques. Explanations where they are made do not seem to me to be very clear.

I find most of the dolls rather creepy looking, and despite the fact they are made by many different people, they seem to me to be all stamped out of a similar mold. I guess this just wasn't the book I was looking for - but it is none the less beautfiully illustrated and I am sure that I will be able to use some of the ideas - for example, for designing faces - in my more humble rag doll making.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite as impressed as I'd hoped.......2007-08-13

The other reviews for this book were so glowing that I thought this was the end-all-beat-all of doll-making books. It's not that it's bad. The process is just a lot more complex than I hoped it would be. The dolls are beautiful, but I was hoping for more variety. The first doll--the beginner level doll--requires lots of dying of fabrics. Pima cotton--the basic ingredient of almost all the dolls--cannot be bought anywhere (the large fabric store I usually shop at didn't even know what it was) except online or at the referenced locations in the back of the book. I would have appreciated some alternatives. I'm in the process of making the beginner doll, but am making a lot of alternations to simplify the process. Maybe that's not a bad thing, but sometimes it's nice to have directions for a simple first project, with easily purchased materials, so that you can see if you want to continue.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Cloth Doll Making.......2007-05-15

Wait till you see this book! I'm now collecting all kinds of silky threads and materials for my dolls and theres so little you need to make these wonderful dolls from this book. You won"t be able to put it down till the end of the book. Just alittle lace goes a long way. And of course Amazon is the best place to get these books.

This is a wonderful book with so many beautiful ideas. Very informative with a lot of creativity.

        Book Description

Innovative ideas for creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces fill this fantastic new book that contains detailed instructions for making each of the 28 wound, twisted, coiled, glued, and trapped wire and fiber beads. Crafters learn to create "wibers" by combining fibers such as cotton embroidery floss and hand-dyed silk threads with a wide variety of thin gauge wires. These "wibers" can then be used to create simple beads and jewelry. Additionally, photos of jewelry pieces are featured to illustrate how easy it is to design beautiful and stunning jewelry with these self-crafted beads.

Lisa Vann has received formal training in various artistic fields, including abstract painting, interior design, textile/surface design, and metalsmithing. This is her second book.

        • Creative ideas for crafters and beaders of any skill level

        • Detailed instructions and helpful photographs to guide readers

5 out of 5 stars Fiber work for wire jewelry.......2005-07-02

My main interest is bead stringing and wire wrapping so I skimmed over this book for about a year. After a closer look, I bought it and wondered why I didn't do it sooner. It melds wire working technique with fiber arts. Basic wire working tools and skills are necessary for Fiber-Wire Beads Jewelry. The book doesn't teach it which is the only drawback but there are other books that do this. All Wired Up by Mark Lareau would be a perfect companion for this book.
The instructions are clear and encouraging. The photos of beads and finished jewelry are inspiring. Another plus is that it requires mimimal equipment and can be made with brass, copper or craft wire instead of the more expensive silver and gold wires.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but falls short.......2005-01-25

This book is interesting - but it seems to be lacking in it's ability to properly show the reader how to end one of these "wiber" beads. The descriptions on how to finish the beads leave me with the impression that these beads will not hold up through repeated wearings.

When I create jewelry, I like to think that my work might someday be passed from one generation to the next. I am just not seeing that this technique will create heirloom quality costume jewelry components.

        5 out of 5 stars Spectacular book.......2004-04-01

Man, whoever wrote the description for this book musn't even have cracked it open! Sure, there are instructions for 30 some odd (and I might add, wonderful) beads but that's the least of this book. The bulk of it is jam-packed with amazing wire and fiber jewelry that has nothing to do with fiber wire beads. You've got to take a look at this amazing stuff....for example, fabulous neckpieces using a simple method of winding wibers around ball chain and an entire chapter on crocheting with fiber and wire! Just gorgeous. This book has been seriously under rated, it's a wellspring of innovative and elegantly simple fiber and wire jewelry.

        5 out of 5 stars Fiber-Wire Beads &Jewelry.......2003-02-10

I found this to be informative for myself, a beginner. My work has been in textiles and beads separately, this is a very good intro to the combination of the two. There are precise, clear instructions for the interesting designs. I am pleased with the range of possiblities going forward with my own designs.

An interesting book based on woven ethnic type designs for jewellary, often major show pieces. Good pictures, lots of info on weaving threads and making up your own patterns, explantions easy to follow, very informative with plenty of detail - how to instructions and graphs to follow.

        5 out of 5 stars Unleashed Creativity!.......2005-11-24

"Beads & Threads', by Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Banes is a fantastic book. I have been beading for about 15 yrs, and wanted to try using a different medium with my beads and this book had so many wonderful ideas of using various threads and also even using other items that I wouldn't have thought of using in the neckpiece. They first show you a beautiful gallery of work, which also gives many ideas for my own neckpieces. What follows is directions on how to design my own necklace, and also how to weave it. I'm anxiously awaiting Helen Banes new book on the same subject. Thank-you for a fantastic book!

3 out of 5 stars Should be titled "Weaving necklaces with a few beads".......2005-10-13

This is really a beautiful well written book. It has wonderful ideas and great instructions if you want to learn one method of making woven jewelry and using some beads as you do this. I take nothing away from the authors or the artists who's work is featured in this book. However, any artist ready to take on this skill of weaving needs about half the pictures(or less) of projects to get the idea of how this jewelry looks. I was looking for SEVERAL ideas for using many different fibers in SEVERAL different styles of beaded jewelry. After reading the reviews, I was sure I had found something like what I wanted. I was disappointed that so few techniques were shown. I would definitely suggest that the publisher offer the option of searching inside the book. If they had, I wouldn't have had to pay the return postage.

5 out of 5 stars Showcases a new technique for making fiber jewelry.......2001-07-04

In Beads And Threads, Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Banes effectively collaborate to showcase a new technique for making fiber jewelry. Superbly illustrated throughout in full color, each project is clearly laid out, complete with a pattern suited to the needs of even the most novice of students. Beads And Threads is divided into four major chapters: A Gallery of Necklaces; Designing Your Own Necklace: Weaving Your Necklace; Patterns; and Finding or Making the Perfect Beads for Your Necklace. The informative and instructive text is enhanced further with appendices listing "Other Books and Publications"; "Bead Societies"; "Sources of Beads"; "Photo & Illustration Credits"; and a succinct index. If you are looking for a do-it-yourself weekend art, craft, or personal adornment project ideas, try browsing through Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Banes' Beads And Threads!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful new weaving and jewelry technique.......1999-01-26

This is a wonderful book that teaches the reader how to make fantastic beaded neckpieces. If you create and wear any of these pieces, people will stop you on the street to look at them! The instructions are clear and patterns are provided with which to get started. Its a craft technique that does not require a large investment in materials, mostly just interesting beads and pearl cotton.

            5 out of 5 stars Beads,Beads, and more Beads.......2006-07-03

Lark books has done it again with a very well written and photographed book on a cross section of media to make beads with. I will admit that I am already a big fan of Adams and Gollberg's work.

Having no interest at this time in felt or paper work. The sections were interesting reading in passing. The clay section has some nice touches. All things covered in this book are for the beginner or somebody that wants to get a handle on the hobby of beads/jewelry.
Yes in the glass beads there is torch work but how many homes today don't have a maap torch for plumbing. Same thing with the metal work Joanna gives it in two sections. The cold working and the hot working. So you can start out with a small investment or none if you have a handy type house.
The pictures are clear bright and show the area that the description tags cover, not work bench scenic shots.

The gallery's have an assortment of other peoples work for wider scope of styles than just the featured artists. I own it and use it

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Showing Varied Methods of Making Beads.......2002-11-16

This is a wonderful book for "how to's" on various methods of making beads including polymer clay, fiber, metal and glass. For any beadmaker or aspiring beadmaker, this book will provide inspiration and instructions for making beads. It gives a great overview of the various methods to wet your appetite! A must have book.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for the beginner or experienced........2002-11-13

I found this to be a great book. The photos were beautiful and the instructions were detailed. I enjoyed the section on polymer clay. The book has chapters on making beads of out felt, paper, metal, glass, & polymer clay. If you enjoy making beads or thinking of starting beadmaking, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational Bead Projects!.......2002-11-13

I love this book. This is a great book for the bead artist. The variety of projects and materials is great and many of the techniques for one medium can be translated to other mediums. The polymer clay section is especially good. Not the only book to own on making beads, but definitely full of excellent inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of different stuff!.......2002-11-13

I don't know if the previous reviewer is looking at the same book I am, but my copy of "Making Beautiful Beads" has a lot more than torches and glass in it. About a quarter of the book covers how to make glass beads with a torch. Another quarter gives you an intro to metal-smithing. Another covers polymer clay. The remaining section has some very unusual felted beads and cast paper beads.

This books covers a lot of ground, so if you are already experienced in several of these disciplines, then you may not need it. On the other hand, if you're curious about what it takes to get into torching your own glass beads or how to get started making beads with polymer clay, this is a great reference.

Each section gives you a good feel for what you'll need in the way of supplies and how to start with each medium. Lots of step-by-step photos and clear instructions.

The book is worth the price for the gallery sections, alone. I don't much care for fiber jewelry as a rule, but some of these hand-felted ornaments are beautiful! The polymer clay, glass and metal galleries are even more inspiring - gorgeous work from a variety of artists and crafters.

This is an excellent book if you want to expand your crocheting into working with beads. The instructions are clear and concise, the projects are lovely and it is well written.
The only thing bad I can say about this book is you will have to search for it - but if you crochet and want a helping hand to incorporate beading with your crocheting, this book is well worth the search.

This is a must-have book for all beaders and embellishers. I had not done much beadwork except for sewing on single beads, but this book inspired me to add some of Nancy's 3-D beaded dragonflies to my latest work. The directions are extremely clear and easy to follow and the pictures in the book are truly inspirational!
