Antique Trader Clocks Price Guide: Including All Types of Clocks - 17th through 20th Century (Antique Trade Clocks Price Guide).......2005-08-11
A brave title with "ALL Types of Clocks" and it disappointed as it did not include many (if any) small Boudoir Clocks. Few 20th Century clocks only 1 electric clock. Few mentions of swiss clocks of note. NO INDEX - what sort of book dose not have an index.
Like many American authors - if it does not happen in the USA it does not happen.
I would not recommend this book to those who collect clocks from "the world" as the world is greater than the USA.

Good pricing methods for woodworkers.......2006-08-20
This book does a very good job of helping woodworkers price their work. The method of determing a selling price is straight forward and clear. The one thing I would like to have seen is a bit more information on how the hourly rates were arrived at. Was it a survey, some govt. publication, or what? Regardless, this is a good book for those of us just opening our woodworking business. A good read and a good reference.
Great Book For All Woodworkers!.......2003-05-15
This is a must have for anyone selling (or thinking of selling) their own woodworking products. The book is very easy to understand and includes information on everything from pricing small craft products to high-end antique reproduction furniture. There is also a lot of information on record-keeping and forms that you can customize for your own business. If you are a woodworker, and have ever asked yourself "How much should I sell this for?" Or if you have a business, and you want to do everything you can to make it successful, this is the book for you!!
Good book for considering ALL of your woodworking costs.......2000-07-04
This book does a good job of making you think of all of the costs that you could incur to run a woodworking shop (even a very small one) and gives good ideas on where and how to sell your projects.

Plainly put good sense.......2007-09-04
The book makes a strong case for strategic and tactical planning rather than reactive, enervating games of "catch up." Too many woodworkers seem to regard our industry as existing outside the normal laws of business, time, and space. Norlin's book refutes this perspective, stressing that every facet of operations demands consideration and ongoing revision. Norlin's book stresses, clarity, accountability, and rigorous procedural review. A solid text for the working pro.
Fundamentals of Woodwork Business Practice.......2004-04-01
Bill is a long-time and loyal supporter of good business practices for fine woodworking. He has contributed to the success of many, many professional woodworkers. This book reminds all of us of the fundamentals of day-to-day operations, particularly if your workflow requires living in the "bidding" marketplace. Every professional woodworker should own this book and re-read it once a year to remain grounded in the basics of successful business.
Applicability of a Woodworking Book to Business.......2000-08-10
This book is one of the kind. It is nor a recipe of highly sophisticated concepts, but rather the experience of a Woodwork business owner passed on to the reader.
If You are a woodwork business owner or manager primarily in the architectutal, store fixtures and specialty cabinetry trades, wanting and needing to have a better structured business approach this book is a must for you.
From chapter 1, where the business operating cycle is defined as the spectrum of events, the book takes You in a simple manner through computers, marketing, with Norm's first rule"Don't sell something unless You know how to manufacture it" and if I may add, this is a very important principle in the ISO9000 standards.
The bidding process in chapter 4, has a realistic set of items and fundamentals to consider when You bid. The costing and pricing chapter, take the reader to close the sale. Other parts of the book, conduct the flow of the business process in a very practical fashion through the manufacturing process from the Order Entry, the Scheduling,Drafting,Purchasing,Plant Lay-Out,Supervision,Machinery,Operations,People,Accounting,Job Costing, cash Flow,Inventory,Machinery Purchase,Buying or Selling the Business and finally Make it happen.
I bought this book sometime ago and have read it and referred to it every now and then when lecturing younger people and lending it to them since the skilled people are scarce in this trade in México just as much as it is in the U.S.

Excellent Business Resource.......2004-01-20
I come from an art background, and I'm always a little worried about becoming the proverbial, "starving artist". This book provided me with a wealth of knowledge to get started on the right foot. I'm writing up my first year's business plan, creating a portfolio, and will begin marketing soon. This book is an excellent resource for anyone getting started.
An Essential "Business Tool" to own!.......2003-12-29
This was a Christmas gift to my son, our family handyman who loves to dabble in wordworking. Family and friends have encouraged him to quit his job as an Engineer and do this full-time. He has accumulated an impressive collection of carpentry tools and books on "How to build....." (You name it and he has a book on how to build it.) Of all his books, this is the only one that provided him with a thorough insight of the business aspect of woodworking. He said this book is the only one that gave him the proper "business tools" to decide whether or not to make a career change. He hasn't made a career change yet, but reading this book has helped him understand the industry a lot better and what he will have to do to turn his hobby into a viable business to support his family.
Perfect source to learn all aspects of going professional........1999-03-31
I found this book very informative with many professional examples. It gave me an insight into all the necessary steps to start my own woodworking business. Well worth the money!

Fun and nutritious!.......2002-11-01
This books is both useful and fun, but in an unusual way: It combines solid business planning information with a lot of information on how to set up your shop. I have read a number of woodworking/business books, and they are dull, not enough jigs and tool talk. Here you get both in an integrated way that makes each strand more useful: All the technology has a purpose.
Really a unique way of packaging a woodworking book. Of course the ultimate lesson is that you should drop all that woodworking nonsense and like Mr. Tolpin become a nationally recognized writer of coffee table books. They're good too, but I miss him.
Oh, by the way, the focus is a two car garage sized cabinet shop.
Do you yearn to be a woodworker.......1998-02-04
This book is an absolute must for anybody who wants to be a cabinetmaker or own a small shop. Of course you could work 20 years and get this information first hand, the hard way. Mr Tolpin --Hat's off--- Great job, Thank you very, very much

Customer Reviews:
It's a good overview of what must be considered...........2002-04-15
but it's not much help at finding the answers. Of course, that's kind of understandable, since "Woodworking" is such a broad area, and so different in different areas. The interviews with woodworkers currently in the business are interesting, but it's a real stretch to call them "Case Studies". I'm a graduate management student -- I know case studies -- these are NOT case studies. I only make that distinction because it's a shame that they really aren't case studies. This book is clearly written for the target audience of people who do woodworking as a hobby and want to turn it into a little business, maybe just something on the side. The book is VERY GOOD at bringing up all the issues that a woodworker-turning-small-business-owner needs to know about and what needs to be done. It's even pretty good at pointing one towards how to get those things done. Where it is weak is in helping one see the salient turning points in making the decisions: for example, it says the woodworker needs to choose between setting up business as a sole-proprietorship, partnership, S-corp, LLC, etc. -- that's important -- but it doesn't have enough on why any of those should be chosen over the others. Not enough to help a person decide. The "interviews"/case studies *would* have been a great place to ask questions like that - "why did you choose to set up an S-corp? How has it worked out for you?" -- and then back up those answers with responses from a business school graduate. This type of analysis would have made the book much more valuable. Still, I think it's worth reading to anyone considering hanging a shingle in front of their shop (so to speak). I give it a solid 3 stars, and closer to 4 than to 2.
A good insight to what it takes to earn some money from wood.......1999-03-14
This book will give you some insight as to what it takes to pursue woodworking either full or part-time. If you are a hobbyist and are considering pursuing this field full time, this book will make you become aware of issues that you may not have considered. In addition to exploring various business related issues, fifteen professional woodworkers are profiled to give you an example of how they entered the field and how they market their craft. I found some of these profiles a bit redundant but their marketing techniques interesting. Personally, I am a hobbyist when it comes to woodworking and have considered pursuing this full time. This book, however, made me think of some issues that I need to consider before "jumping in." Overall, an informative book.

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on polishes and creams for the maintenance of wooden furniture and floors and other woodwork excluding artificial and prepared waxes in United States face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying polishes and creams for the maintenance of wooden furniture and floors and other woodwork excluding artificial and prepared waxes to United States? How important is United States compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of polishes and creams for the maintenance of wooden furniture and floors and other woodwork excluding artificial and prepared waxes vary from one country of origin to another in United States? On the supply side, United States also exports polishes and creams for the maintenance of wooden furniture and floors and other woodwork excluding artificial and prepared waxes. Which countries receive the most exports from United States? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for polishes and creams for the maintenance of wooden furniture and floors and other woodwork excluding artificial and prepared waxes in United States. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for polishes and creams for the maintenance of wooden furniture and floors and other woodwork excluding artificial and prepared waxes for those countries serving United States via exports, or supplying from United States via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where United States fits into the world market for imported and exported polishes and creams for the maintenance of wooden furniture and floors and other woodwork excluding artificial and prepared waxes. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for United States in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that United States is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize United States compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.
