White Star A Dog on the Titanic, written by Mary Crisp, is about a boy named Sam Harris who is on his way to America to live with his mom and stepfather, and his friendships during the voyage of the Titanic. Sam's two best friends are Bucky and Star: Mr. J. Ismay's award winning Irish setter. Sam is quickly acquainted with all of the dogs aboard, though his favorite is still Star. Then in the morning on April 15th, Sam runs on deck to see that women and children are boarding the lifeboats. Sam's caretaker wants Sam to get into a lifeboat for the Titanic has struck an iceberg. Sam refuses and sprints to the dog kennel to get Star. Once back on deck, all life boats are loaded and Sam is pulled off the boat and into the water by Star. They are then rescued by lifeboat #4 and later picked up by the Carpathia. Sam then arrives in New York and is taken home by his mother, luckily with Star. I definitely recommend this novel for dog lovers and anyone who likes adventure.

The first reason why I recommend this exceptional novel was for the characters. They were real and/or very believable and you got to know them very well. For example, you know almost right away that Sam's father died of influenza, his mom moved and married a stranger (to Sam), and that he had to leave his grandparents. This makes you feel bad for Sam and so you want him to live or jump in a lifeboat when the Titanic sinks because you are "on his side." Another character you come to like is Robert Daniel, who automatically becomes friends with Sam and has a dog. He is a caring and clever man who was a real survivor of the Titanic! Because Mr. Daniel, Bucky, the kennel boy-Finn, and the dogs are nice to Sam, the reader is more concerned and interested in those characters.

I also really liked how this novel was arranged. For every chapter was a name, date, place, and time which did two things. First of all, it made the novel much more believable since the dates, places, and times were real, researched facts. Secondly, the titles on the chapters helped to summarize the chapter. For example, Chapter 8 was called "Not Without My Dog" (the Titanic was somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean) with the subtitle "Monday, April 15, 1912, 12:30 a.m." From the date and title you can tell that Sam wouldn't leave the Titanic without Star and that the Titanic had not sunk yet. Another chapter was called "On the Carpathia" which told the reader that the survivors were picked up by another ship and would survive to tell the story of the Titanic.

Another reason that I recommend this book is because after the wonderful, though fictional, story of Sam and Star, there are 14 pages of non-fiction material about the Titanic. The mini-information bank includes the map of the Titanic's voyage, a timeline for the massive ship, a four-page long diagram of the Titanic, facts, mysteries, survivors, and victims of the Titanic. The listed survivors and victims were characters in White Star who interacted with Sam. It was fascinating to read about those characters' actual lives and accounts. Also, the map of the Titanic itself helped me to better visualize where Sam, Star, and Bucky were on the ship.

In conclusion, because of many elements, this novel was exceptionally realistic. The characters were real and believable just like the plot, and the whole story was very well developed. This is a fairly easy read that is full of adventure, friendship, and dogs and is a very enjoyable book. I recommend it to anyone who likes dogs or a fast read about friendship and courage on the memorable voyage of the Titanic.

I liked this book because it had imagination for the main character Star. I also liked that the story was based on a real event - the sinking of the Titanic. The book was challenging but not too hard. Parts of the book were sad too. I would recommend the book because you really feel like you are experiencing everything Sam and Star are experiencing.

2 out of 5 stars No Updated Genetic Disease Information and Not Personable.......2007-01-03

This soft cover book is attractive in appearance but it lacks many things. It has no information on major genetic diseases and research being done in universities to catalog and eventually be able to control or do away with these serious diseases. Fortunately you can go on the American Kennel Website for this kind of information.

This book tells you about purchasing, caring for, nutrition, breeding, behavior and training, just like it says on the very first page.
I ordered this book hastily and mostly because there were only about one or two books on Irish Setters, I really had no choice and got this one out of desperation.

It has very few photographs.

It is the standard and boring book on dogs.

BUT ... in the chapter on "Raising Quality Irish Setters" it does have a very short information and warning. The author writes, "Study canine genetics and learn about dog breeding in depth." And the author continues, "You should have your dog's hips, eyes, and possibly other areas checked for any conditions that may be genetic in origin and thus could be passed along." Here the author could have gone into more details about these possible genetic diseases. But since this book is "A Complete Pet Owner's Manual", I suppose detailed information on genetic diseases is not supposed to be included in the book.

So be it, it is 2007 and thankfully we do have the internet where all this information is very available to us. I have never owned an Irish Setter and before I ever go out and get one, I want to know what I am getting into. I want to know if they get epilepsy for example, ... especially if I get the dog from a shelter! I won't know it's lineage or who bred it, I won't know what disease it could get.

With my husband Bruno's Doberman Pinschers, at least we know who bred them and what diseases their parent's died from, and we are "prepared" for these possibilities, having them routinely medically examined and participating in genetic testing.

The other thing that is lacking in this book is cute anecdotes of the daily pranks and ways of Irish Setters, probably because the author did not have his own dog while writing the book. Instead he consulted with three breeders for information on the dogs. Because of this, the book is in such need of personal accounts, heart warming accounts, making the book rather sterile.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2006-08-15

In preparation for adding an Irish Setter to our family - I found this book to be extremely helpful. Very up front on who and why you should get one of these beautiful dogs.

I would strongly recommend this book to anybody in love with Irish Setters, but particularly to the uniniciated future owner, like myself.

It covers all aspects involved in looking after this breed and explains in excellent detail all anyone needs to know from the puppy stage through to the mature pet.

In addition the book is illustrated with superb photographs plus an explanation of how healthy dogs should look and behave.

I can't wait to have my puppy home in a few weeks time!

Caitlin (Kate) O’Rourke is not your typical Irish-American lass. At six-one and one-hundred-seventy-eight pounds, with dark skin, raven-black hair, and a nose like an eagle, the MVP setter/middle blocker on the Italian Pro Volleyball circuit is a has-been in her late 20s, prematurely retired due to a blown-out knee. She’s bitter, dejected, and not sure of what to do with the rest of her life.

Kehough’s Irish Pub in Nashville, Tennessee, with its upstairs apartment, is home to Kate and, indirectly, provides a solution to her search.

File this first book in the series under “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished.” After Kate rescues a damsel in distress from a mugger, she gets roped into babysitting the woman until the locks are changed on the woman’s house. But when Kate’s charge is murdered on her watch, the former Irish step dancer, former star athlete, and now owner of a Nashville Irish pub sets out to find out who did it—and why.

Written by experienced playwright and scriptwriter Bill Stackhouse, Black-Irish Setter is an attention engaging mystery starring a most unlikely heroine. Caitlin O'Rourke is a former Italian professional volleyball player who prematurely retired due to a blown-out knee, is bitter, depressed, and rather unsure of her future. Caitlin rescues a damsel in distress only to have murder strikes down her charge. Caitlin burns with the determination to track down the killer and learn the motive. An unpredictable and original tale of suspense, Black-Irish Setter confirms Bill Stackhouse as a skilled and original writer -- and leave his readers waiting enthusiastically for his next Caitlin O'Rourke mystery!

5 out of 5 stars What does a has-been Itialian Pro Volleyball player do next.......2003-06-26

Caitlin (Kate) O'Rourke is trying to decide what to do with her life. She is 6'1" and 180 pounds, in her late 20s and has dark skin, black hair, and a nose like an eagle. She was a Italian Pro Volleyball setter/middle blocker until she blew out her knee. She was also a basketball player. She has been offered a coaching job and has a week to decide.

She owns Kehough's Irish Pub in Nashville, Tennessee, with her brother Pat (a policeman), brother Seamus, and sister-in-law Mary Grace. Seamus and Mary Grace took her in when her parents died while she was still in school. She now lives in the apartment above the pub.

She witnesses Junior Lee Thigpen steal Delane Denning's purse. She agrees to go with Delane to Cove Creek, their vacation home, for a few days. Delane is too afraid to return to their home because her husband Matt will be out of town. All her keys and ID were in her purse. Junior will know where they live and they can't get the locks changed until the next day. Kate enjoys living like the rich for a few days. But she is happy to be heading home. When she stops to drop Delane at home, a terrible accident happens. Delane is killed.

Detective Ozzie Osborn is a tall black woman. Her partner Detective Sykes is a white male. They are assigned to find her killer. They put out an APB on Junior. Kate tries to assist them but ends up alienating Detective Osborn on more than one occasion.

Eventually Kate ends up doing some investigating and helps solve the case. She still has to decide on what she'll do with her life.

This is a great first book in a new series. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more books with Caitlin O'Rourke. Bill's descriptions of her and the other assorted characters in this book were terrific. I could see each of them. They were very real. This included the relationships between the characters as well.

I must say that I had a good suspicion early as to who was behind it. But I didn't see all the twists that he put in place.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next.

Reviewing a book one has never read ..... it's like being a student in a high school English class again (and since I teach high school English, I am familiar with the symptoms). However, as a breeder of Gordon Setters who has shown in the breed ring under Luz Holvenstot, and who has lusted to own one of her wonderful setter scuptures - I feel compelled to comment that in "real life" she has an unfailing sense of sound structure and beauty in a setter. I can't imagine that her book would reflect anything less than that. I rate it a 7 on "spec" alone - and am eager to see a copy of it so that I can raise it's grade to what I am sure it deserves.
