A Different Sort of Travel Guide: Fascinating Park Trivia.......2007-05-19
This latest Uncle John publication proclaims on its back cover "It's time to hit the Trail!" Hit the history books is more like it. This wonderful little volume is full of fascinating trivia about the national parks and monuments found in the US and Canada. Each chapter is brief enough to be read during a single trip to the throne room of your house, and for the most part the prose is enjoyable enough to keep you coming back. Favorite stories for me were "The Great Pig War" in which the US and England nearly managed to go to war over a dead pig (San Juan Island National Historic Park) and the Mojave National Preserve's "lonely phonebooth."
For the most part the history and folklore seemed accurate enough, though the authors did slip a little when they wrote that Ansel Adams had saved King's Canyon with pictures of its Giant Sequoia Grove. There is no such grove in King's Canyon proper. General Grant Grove is now administered as a part of King's Canyon National Park, but it has been protected since 1890. In any event, King's Canyon was preserved because it so closely resembled Yosemite. On the other hand, virtually every other element of the book is accurate. Indeed, this is one of the few sources I have ever read that correctly notes Hot Springs Arkansas is the oldest National Park, dating back to 1835, long before the Yosemite Grant or the creation of Yellowstone National Park.
So, by all means get this rather unusual travel guide. It probably won't help much with actual trip planning, but it is nice for whiling away the time between trips: especially that portion of the time when you are otherwise preoccupied.
Uncle John is still producing.......2007-05-06
Interesting tid bits about National Parks. Suggest you read this before visiting the parks. You might decide to change your routings, in some cases.

Book Description
Anna Pigeon has fled New York and her memories to find work as a ranger in the country’s national parks. In the remote backcountry of West Texas, however, she discovers murder and violence. Fellow park ranger Sheila Drury is mysteriously killed, presumably by a mountain lion. But the deep claw marks Anna finds across Drury’s throat and the paw prints surrounding the body are too perfect to be real. This is the first time Track of the Cat is available on audio.

Murder in the Back Country.......2007-08-03
When the National Park Service puts a bounty on a killer mountain lion, it rubs National Park Ranger Anna Pigeon's fur the wrong way. It's a knee jerk reaction from the Park's leadership: Mountain Lion Attack! Kill the animal first, ask questions later. Or maybe no questions need to be asked at all. Something stinks at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and it's not just the brutal death of a fellow park ranger whose half eaten dead body was found by Anna in the back country. It's the naturalist vs. the politicians. The Park Service, neighboring cattle ranchers and developers all want the mountain lion disposed of. It seems Anna, suspicious of things that are a little too neat, is the only one taking the animal's side.
This is Nevada Barr's kick off novel, and a good one it is. Anna Pigeon, park ranger, is the hero. Unlike most, Anna is a law enforcement ranger. She didn't think there would be much law enforcement to do in this remote park in West Texas. Most enforcement types are stationed in parks close to urban areas where most crime takes place. Anna chose the law enforcement route because the Protective Division does not only the serious cop stuff, but Search and Rescue, where the real action is. When a mountain lion kills a human, it is not a crime, but when the humans make it look like it was done by an animal, yes, no matter if it is in the bedroom or on a city street or the back country, that is murder.
Because of the excellence of the writing, the natural world as a backdrop, and the character of Anna Pigeon, I've read several of Barr's books and have enjoyed them all.
What a start!.......2007-07-15
Nevada Barr begins her series of Anna Pigeon mysteries with this intriguing story set in Guadeloupe Mountains National Park (Texas). Having read A Superior Death first (the second novel in this series) and then Endangered Species and Deep South before going back to read the series in consecutive order of publication, I was wondering how I'd see Anna in Book No. 1. She's not an altogether sympathetic main character, but she grows on you. The intricacies of the plots in the novels seem to grow, but even that in "Track" is full of detail and enticement. For those who are "detailed" people, I'm sure they will find these mysteries alluring. I look forward to reading all 13 of the mysteries.
Another Winner.......2007-06-29
Nevada Barr tells a good tale with interesting characters and setting. I highly recommend her books.
Track of the Cat.......2007-05-15
Good beginning to the Anna Pigeon series. A couple of murders, mysterious only to Anna, but intriguing in their setting: the Guadeloupe Mountains in western Texas. Well written, not heavy, entertaining.
track of the cat.......2005-12-05
The starting of this book is very slow, then it turns into a book you can't put down. The main character in the book is Anna Pigeon, who is a park ranger in West Texas. She is hiking down in the walls of McKiirick Canyon and she find another park ranger dead. The ranger had cat scratches on her. Everone thinks a cat killed her but Anna just can't believe that a cat in West Texas would kill and not eat its prey. Anna start investigating on her own. She uncovers other clues. As she does many other deaths occur. The end of this story is a big surprise. Read it, it's very intertaining.

Love the book and the fast service. I love all of the books that Jonathan Scott has written. I just wish in the US that we could still see the Big Cat Diary Series.
Leopards rule and rock! No doubt about it! .......2005-07-18
I love this book! Leopards are my # 4 favorite animals of all time topped only by jaguars, tigers, and of course lions. I think they are both cool and beautiful. I loved all the ones in here, most definitely the female ones. They were the most cool and beautiful. The only bad part was any of them getting hurt or killed, but other than that this book rocked! The cubs were cute, also. And boy, did I ever learn a lot about lions and hyenas as well as leopards. Like I said, this is a terrific book. I own it at home and will own it until my dying day. I highly reccomend it to anyone over the age of 12. Man, oh man, Amazon.com, you keep up making books like this.

5th grade Teacher-My students love it!.......2007-07-28
Peg Kehret is a great author and once again has written an intriguing and captivating story. Once I shared it with my kids, they were dying to check it out. Most read it in one night! A great "Can't put it down" book.
The sad journey that ended!!!!!!!.......2006-09-13
My book is about a boy whs name is Spencer and he is 12.Him and his mom had to move because they couldn't pay rent anymore so they left at 3:ooAM in the morning so no one could see them, but Spencer couldn't find his cat but his mom made him leave anyway. Then he went back later that night to get his cat. There was two guys there painting already as he began to call his cats name he went in the garage to see if he could find him. When he found him as soon as he turned around a guy said hey come out or I am calling the cops.He began to run dowm the road and hid behind a bush for a bus, when the first one said no pets allowed he had to wait 2 more hours for the other one. When he got to his aunts where he was staying he fell fast asleep and in the morning he woke up to his mom and aunt screaming at him to take the cat to the pound or find another home for it.So when they left he decided he was going to run away to his dads in San Fransisco. This is a very good book and I would definatly read it again if I had time.
?¿SeArChInG fOr CaNdLeStIcK pArK¿?.......2005-03-17
This book was about a boy on a journey to find his dad in Candlestick Park. Early one morning, Spencer and his mom move to their aunt May's hose. Spencer is forced to leave his cat behind but he goes back to the house that night. Aunt May and Spencer's mom makes him find a new home for the cat. Spencer hates that so he runs away from home to find his dad in California. Spencer runs into some trouble along the way to California. Along the way he stays at a park and his cat (Foxy) gets chased by a dog. He also stayed with a guy that did wood carvings. When he came back to see him he had died. He also starts to steal and lie and he feels really bad. This book was a great book I liked it. If you like adventurous books, this is good. I would recommend it to you.
Searching for Candlestick Park.......2002-02-19
This book is about a boy named Spencer that is 12 years old. He had to move to Seattle with his mom to his Aunts house because his mom wasn't paying the rent.He has a cat that he brings but his aunt doesn't like the cat so Spencer runs away from home to go and find his dad in San Francisco. His dad is a big Giants fan. Spencer finds his dad but Spencer can't live with him because now his dad has a girl friend and there is not enough room for all of them. So Spencers dad buys him an airplane ticket to go home and now Spencer and his mom moved back to there old house because now they have enough money. This is a very good book!
An exciting runaway story with a happy ending!.......2001-08-17
At first I was bothered that Spencer was lying and stealing to run away from his aunt's Seattle area home, where he was living with his mother, so he could search for his father in San Francisco. But once I realized that he was keeping a list of all the things he "borrowed" from people so he could pay them back, I relaxed and found myself getting involved in this bicycle/hitch-hike/bus ride adventure. While it's easy to get the impression that "Searching for Candlestick Park" glamorizes running away, in the end it serves as a warning for how dangerous this can be.
We added this book to our school library at the insistent request of a sixth grader who had read it in another school. After we acquired several copies, it was constantly checked out, including one copy that this same boy read at least two more times!
Another good "on the road" adventure with a happy ending is "Bud, Not Buddy." Enjoy.
Book Description
Benson's COMPLETE is designed for a 2-semester A&P course. In addition to the dozens of effective exercises, this lab manual is unique in that students are asked to label many of the figures to reinforce concepts.
The cat is the primary dissection specimen in this manual. It is self-contained, detailed, and very logical in its approach. Because of its detailed content (textual material, line art, photos, and histology micrographs), it is generally not necessary to take the course textbook to the lab. The atlas of quality histology micrographs has always been a strong feature and makes it unnecessary to purchase an additional histology atlas.

This new edition works well with any textbook and includes complete explanations of essential information. Great Quilt Book.......2007-03-26

Quick and Easy Scrap Quilts.......2005-12-29
I love this book. I go back to it from time to time. A good book for a quilters library. I have made several quilts in the book.
It is a book I would give as a gift to a new quilter for sure!
Finally, a really excellent scrap quilt book!.......2005-09-23
I had been frustrated with previous scrap quilt and fat quarter quilt books that often called for significant yardage of certain fabrics, and then a few small pieces of fabric. I need something to do with all my bits and pieces--when I have lots of yardage, I'll go with a conventional pattern, thank you! This book is chock full of interesting quilts that truly utilize your scrap collection. I can easily pick out eight or ten quilts that I'd like to do from this book--usually it's hard to find more than five from any given publication that one actually wants to try. The book is well-laid out, too, and the patterns are easy to follow and able to be completed in a reasonable amount of time. I now grin gleefully whenever I get new scraps, because thanks to this book, I have plans for them!
Disappointed.......2005-07-20
I am a little disappointed by this book. There is nothing new or different, quite boring really.
Best Scrap Quilt book!.......2005-05-13
I just received this book and took the time to carefully look through it. Unbelievable! Beautiful quilt patterns with clear, concise, easy directions. Even includes up to 3 ideas per project for quilting. All of the quilts are pieced with a couple of Applique quilts thrown in for good measure. Just about every project is listed in 4 sizes. Sprinkled throughout the book are helpful hints to make quilting easier. I own other scrap quilt books and wish I'd seen this one first because I would Not have bought any others! Excellent book!!

A lovely collection of quilts.......2006-08-21
A very nice layout of 32 quilt projects accompanied by beautiful full color photos of the finished quilts, easy to understand instructions, hints & tips throughout. I'm happy I was able to get this in the hardcover edition for the durability factor, since I already know I'll be making quite a few of the quilts in it over time. Note: The title given here should read Quick and Easy Scrap Quilts to avoid confusion since it's exactly the same as the paperback version that follows. Also, the publish date should be corrected to read Aug. 1995 (ISBN#: 0-8487-1448-2)
