Book Description
Training in No Time supplies the training regimen today's busy lifestyles demand for both owners and their dogs. It makes good use of how dogs learn and explains how to use that knowledge to establish and maintain the responses every dog owner wants.
The Sneakaway is the foundation of this training method. Quite literally, you turn your back and sneak away whenever your dog stops paying attention to you. This method allows for easy teaching and effective problem solving by first focusing your dog’s undivided attention on you, even around the strongest distractions.
Then using daily, subtle clues you give your dog in everyday interactions, you can instill good habits The surest way to get permanent, positive results is to recognize and change the few big ambiguities that allowed problems to surface and to use daily, subtle clues to instill, not destroy, good habits. Behavior is being molded 24 hours a day. This results in consistent, socially acceptable behavior under all circumstances and a well-trained companion dog.

Simple, effective dog training.......2005-06-24
I took this book out of the local library and I found it so helpful I will be buying my own copy.
The text is very clear and simply expressed. It is possible to sit down and read the book from cover to cover without being overwhelmed, but if you want to just dip into it the chapter headings make it easy to find the information you need and there is also an index. The first part deals with general training of a new puppy and the later chapters deal with specific problems.
The authors give you an insight into dog psychology and their training philosophy makes a lot of sense.
The book has attractive and useful illustrations which help explain points made in the text.

Pleased with my book.......2007-09-16
We have been pleased with Amazon ordering books online. My college students purchase new and used books all the time. The review of the book is accurate, the shipping reasonable and the turnaround time for delivery is sufficient. I recently purchased a book on knitting and was very pleased with the product. No complaints so far.
Very Helpful for visual learners.......2007-07-18
If you learn best by reading and then visualizing concepts, then this book is for you. The directions and visuals are great and really appealed to the way that I learn things. I also like that there are many different stitches in this book and that all of them have been swatched so that you can see very clearly what they are supposed to look like in case yours is not the same. The photographs are incredible and so very helpful. This book goes beyond just being for beginners and is a great reference too.
Great Resource for a first-time knitter.......2007-06-06
I am definitely still a beginner and I still use this book as a wonderful resource for all of my questions and (oopsy) mistakes. I actually taught myself how to knit through the use of this book- it just makes sense in a way that all of the other books I used didn't. The frame by frame shots are especially helpful, as well as the explanations and photos. As I am still starting out and fairly bad at this new hobby, I am thankful that I was able to find such a helpful resource! I definitely refer to this each time I start a new project- you will not be disappointed!
TEACH YOURSELF VISUALLY KNITTING.......2007-05-31
I WAS HOPEING THIS WOULD OF BEEN A BIT MORE VISUAL ON SOME OF THE STICHES.
Knitting Encyclopedia.......2007-05-13
Love this book. It has actual full-color photographs of hands doing what you want to accomplish so when you look up a stitch or a method, it is very easy to follow along -- even for a lefty like me. If I were only allowed to have one book on techniques, this is the one I would select.
Book Description
There are lots of stylish knitting patterns out there, but sometimes you want to do your own thing. Maybe you've found a yarn that would make a beautiful hat, and all you need are basic directions for shaping. Or maybe you've had your eye on a cute sweater in a store window and know that you can make a better version yourself—if you could only figure out the measurements. This handy guide demystifies all that knitting math and shows you how to knit custom-fitted, one-of-a-kind fashions that express your style. Master patterns for hats, sweaters, scarves, shawls, bags, mittens, vests, and socks lay out the basic construction for each item in a range of sizes; you choose the yarn and decide which modifications and customizations you want to make.
Precise master patterns show you all the steps involved in constructing handknits
- Master patterns give instructions for multiple sizes and gauges
- A number of shaping, edgings, and stitch patterns accompany each master pattern
- Helpful tips provide additional guidance
- Tables take the work out of knitting math
- Step-by-step instructions accompany each photo
- Color photos, illustrations, and diagrams demonstrate important concepts
Customer Reviews:
I was shocked, it was done so poorly.......2007-07-07
This book is a little strange, it gives you some good info, and on the other hand, some weird things as well. For instance in the hats section, she only gives gauge for casting on as 2 sts per inch, 3 or 4, but gives up to seven per inch for yardage requirements, and decreasing.
The printing on my copy was quite bad, some pages were blurry, so blurry it hurts my eyes to look at them. A few of the pictures are also slightly blurry.
Lastly, I found the actual garments to show some horrid knitting errors, that really have me wondering who test knitted these things? The gloves are slightly bulbous on the fingertips, the mitten thumbs look like they were made for sausages, and there is a sweater that the sleeves were set in so badly I can't believe they put it in the book, several times. Many of the garments are knitted with uneven gauge, with tight rows of stitches and loose floppy rows. Some of the knitting just looks horrible, and I am rather disappointed at the quality. It appears to have some good stuff in it, but I'm a little afraid to cast on a sweater that has arm joins that are awful, with obvious blaring mistakes all over it. Most of them had some sort of mistake that I could see, and I usually can't see that stuff. I wouldn't pay too much for this book.
Hugs to you, Sharon!.......2007-03-15
I love this book. I used to search high and low for patterns that would suit particular yarns from my (huge) stash. Now I can sit down with yarn, needles, this book, and an idea of what I want to make, and I'm ready to go. Sharon Turner has done all the tedious math in this book so I can focus on the design.
I've made a number of garments with this book already: socks, hats, hand warmers, mittens, and even a sweater (which was a piece of cake!). As I've worked on these knitted items, I've begun to get a much better understanding of knitting (patterns aren't so mysterious after all), and I'm finding that I don't even need the book all the time when I want to create something new. On top of that, I've grown really frustrated with run-of-the-mill patterns because they're often so poorly written and buggy. Why struggle through that when I can use this clear, well-written book to create my own unique items?
Packed with Knitting Patterns.......2007-03-14
This book is an incredibly dense knitting resource. It is literally packed with knitting patterns, techniques and suggestions for individualizing other knitting patterns--written clearly and filled with color images on every page. It covers every possible thing you could want to knit (hats, scarves, mittens, gloves, sweaters, bags) but in every size from baby to adult male, and in several different gauges for each category! It breaks each thing down into steps so that you can choose one type of hem, brim or cuff, then choose another shaping style, and so on. All the math is right there. I didn't really realize how knit items could be interchanged in terms of parts like that, and I feel like I have a renewed understanding of how to approach all knitting projects. The only thing I wish it included is how to add a hood to a sweater. Other than that, everything's in this book. A great value.
Knitting and Fashion - Together at Last!.......2007-03-07
As a college student, I am always interested in the current trends. While I had heard for quite some time now that knitting was making a comeback, it seemed difficult to apply this trend to my everyday life. Though the idea of knitting a cute sweater or funky miniskirt always seemed appealing, I have often left knitting shops discouraged at the thought of spending hard-earned money and hours of time only to be left with a frumpy, unfashionable garment.
My mom sent me this book recently hoping it would solve my knitting dilemma, and to my amazement, it has! Though I am by no means the best knitter, this book makes it easy to make the image in my head correspond with the product that emerges from my needles. It is so fun to see a product in an expensive boutique and know that I could make it for half the cost, in a better color no less.
I own Sharon Turner's other two books, and therefore did not need any convincing to explore this latest one she has written. But for anyone who is not certain if this product will suit your needs, I encourage you to buy it and take a look. You won't be sorry!
Last knitting book you'll ever need.......2007-02-06
This is probably the last knitting book I'll ever have to buy. Yay! I spent hours last year searching for a cabled vest pattern and couldn't find exactly what I was envisioning. Then I got this book with directions for every kind of vest, sweater, scarf, bag, hats, mittens and shawls one could possible want. Not only are there all the elements to incorporate into creating one's own patterns for all these items, but Sharon Turner's directions are so clear that even a rather inexperienced knitter (me!) can easily follow them and create the pattern of one's dreams. Sharon even shows you varied stitch patterns. I sincerely recommend this book for every knitter from inexperienced to expert! Joan Parlin

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-09-08
This book had a lot of potential - great spinning teacher, big publisher, professional layout and photographer - but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The overall impression I had was that of a spinning class for beginners where the teacher says "Spinning is a great hobby, you can do this, and this, and this, and this, it's really great - well, sorry, I don't have the time to explain HOW you do it, but you'll figure it out". There's supposedly a little bit of everything, but for a beginner the explanations are just not detailed enough (and even for me, with some years of experience, the "rainbow pot" didn't work out). Now, that's just the general impression, but there's also a number of specific points to criticize.
First of all, pictures are not very good. The "closeup" shots of yarn and fibre are not close enough and the pictures don't always go very well with the text: The different types of spinning wheel (bobbin-lead, scotch tension, double drive) are illustrated with full frontal shots of the wheels - you can see pedals and drivewheel, but not even guess how drive band and brake band are running - which is the only important thing. The only picture (in this chapter) that does show the drive/brake band arrangement is that of a scotch tension wheel right next to the headline "bobbin-driven wheels". Page 77: "The hooks on most flyers are offset, which makes it easier to fill the bobbins evenly. You move the yarn from the hood on the right side to the hook on the left side, from one end of the flyer to the other" - for that to work the hooks need to be on opposite sides of the flyer arms (so that both rows of hooks are visible - or invisible - at the same time when the flyer is horizontal) and this is NOT the case on the wheel that's shown on this page. On page 140 we have a picture of a skein of angora yarn and the text says "Do you see how much bigger the yarn is now that it's fulled?" No, we don't - there's no "before" picture.
So, don't buy the book for the pictures. Well, normally I wouldn't anyway - but the title is "Teach yourself visually..." - and the motto "Read less - learn more". Which implies that you are supposed to learn from the pictures...
Textwise, the technical information on spinning wheels is unclear, incomplete or just plain wrong. Examples: Page 15: "A bobbin-driven wheel is the fastest of the wheel types, but it doesn't offer you much control" - what's that supposed to mean? Spinning wheel speed is a function of the transmission ratio between drive wheel and whorl (a concept that's never mentioned anywhere), and incidentally the bobbin-driven wheels I know are all on the slow side. Page 16: "You have more control on a double-drive wheel than you do on a bobbin-driven wheel, but less speed" and finally the flyer-driven wheel is "the slowest of the three types". What is that supposed to mean?
Then, what are we supposed to learn from sentences like this one: "If you have the wheel-maker's instructions, it should tell you how to replace the bobbin. If you do not have the instructions, every wheel should have some way to take the flyer off so that you can replace the bobbin" (page 70). By the way, nowhere is mentioned that the whorl on the double-drive wheel usually unscrews clockwise - that might have been a piece of useful information. Regarding information that's just plain wrong, here's one example: "Remember to put the drive band on the big end of the bobbin if you are using a scotch brake and on the small end if you are using a double drive" (page 71) - wrong! for scotch brake operation you put the drive band on the FLYER whorl and the brake band on the bobbin whorl!
Another peeve: Judith McKenzie McCuin mostly avoids traditional spinning terminology and anything that might make spinning seem technical. Instead of "drafting" she uses mostly "stretching", instead of "S- and Z-twist" "left and right twist (and I like her explanation with the thumb - but would it really have hurt to mention that other sources use S and Z?), there's no mention of spinning wheel ratios, twists per inch or wraps per inch...
I've given the two stars only because the book does seem nice, with an easy to read layout and lots of color pictures, and might create some interest in spinning - I just hope that beginning spinners will then take a class or get another book before being too discouraged by this one. Books I'd recommend are: For explaining how a spinning wheel works: Alden Amos Big Book of Handspinning. For learning how to spin: Lee Raven's Hands on Spinning (spindle and wheel) or Connie Delaney's Spindle Spinning from Novice to Expert, or Patsy Zawitoski's videos. For novelty yarns Diane Varney's Spinning Designer Yarns (includes a chapter on chemical dyeing) and/or Patsy Zawitoski's video, for natural dyeing Jenny Dean's Wild Color.
Excellent book!.......2007-09-06
This is the book that I will now be recommending for my spinning students. It has photos of every technique along with clear descriptions and explanations. It covers beginning spinning to a variety of more advanced novelty yarns, and shows how to work with a great variety of fibers including wool, silk, alpaca, and wild fibers. The photos are most helpful.
Teach yourself visually handspinning.......2007-06-14
I will enjoy using this book as a review. But some how I missed that it was a book, not a DVD.
Learn how to do it all.......2007-06-01
I've been a spinner for a couple of years now and yet learned quite a bit from Judith MacKenzie's book. It is as complete an introduction and review of handspinning as you can get in the written/photograhed medium. She ought to do a DVD as an accompaniment. Thanks Ms. MacKenzie.

Customer Reviews:
THE BEST beginning knitting book out there.......2005-10-27
This book is a fantastic book for a new knitter, or for a "lapsed" knitter who needs to review some basic skills. The book uses lots of excellent, close-up, high-contrast color photographs to illustrate every step of the knitting (and crocheting) process.
The book will show you how to cast-on, both a single cast-on method and two double cast-on methods. There are also photos of a wide variety of pattern stitches knitted using only the basic knit and purl stitches. Then the book moves onto more complicated techniques, such as increasing, decreasing, and knitting with double-pointed needles. Again, excellent photographs will guide you every step of the way.
Finally, the book includes clear, concise directions for a number of fun projects. And the projects are not all trivial, either. I especially recommend the design called "cozy knit socks", which yields an awesome pair of socks which any knitter would be proud to wear.
Whether you are a new or returning knitter, this is an essential reference book.
Simply the best.......2005-10-15
With its clear, color, step-by-step photographs and coverage of nearly every knitting technique a beginner or even an intermediate knitter might need, this book--which has now been reissued under a different title, Maran Illustrated Knitting and Crocheting--is simply the best knitting instruction book I have ever seen for those of us who learn how to do things by seeing rather than by reading. I've given multiple copies to fellow knitters, and I have two copies myself in case one actually falls apart from heavy use. It's an unassuming volume from a small family-run press that may well become the indispensable foundation of your knitting library. If you are a visual learner who wants to knit but haven't learned because you don't have someone to teach you in person, this book is the answer. Enjoy!
Excellent book.......2005-09-25
This is one of my favorite reference books. I'm a visual learner and the color photographs with contrasting yarn colors are wonderful! Lots of other books have ink illustrations and I find those difficult to translate sometimes. I also like the fact that it has crochet info in it too because some knitting patterns require basic crochet skills.
Great transaction.......2005-09-09
The book was as described and received in a timely manner. Thank you!
Just Wonderful.......2005-06-30
I purchased on the recommendation from one of the employees at my favorite yarn shop. She was right on the mark. I learned to knit back in the eighties, but hadn't kept up my skills. I really needed something that knows a beginner is just that; a beginner. The instructions and pictures really helped when my Vogue book left me clueless. I loved the book so much that I purchased a second one for my sister-in-law, mainly because of the pictures. Her second language is english and has difficulty with our written instructions. She's also thrilled with the book, since I can't pop overseas to help her with her knitting problems. If you want something that is clear and consise, this is the book for you.

KNITTING GOLD.....................2007-10-03
I'm a fairly new knitter - only 2 years but addicted. I bought this book because I wanted practical advice all in one place. The book looked good - I soon discovered it was GREAT. My copy is very used by now - there isn't a project I've done where I haven't referred to this book and found excellent clear instruction and advice. I love it - and you will too, I promise!
Perfect!.......2007-10-03
I love the size of this new book! I go away frequently and like to take my knitting with me but have found all the other books, good as they are, too big to take anywhere conveniently. Finally there's a book which answers all my questions in an easy to use format with a wonderfully compact size. This is one of the clearest instruction books on the market. Bravo, Sharon Turner!!
