Customer Reviews:
When civilizaton falls, I'll be ready!.......2007-07-14
This book is well written, easy to read and full of useful information on how to survive out in the wild places. Anyone planning for the end of civilization (or just a fun weekend camping in the woods) should read this book.
"A Treasure".......2007-04-20
when i say treasure i don't use that term lightly. i originally read this book in it's entirety and really enjoyed it, then put it down for awhile. However, I have spent numerous hours in the outdoors as of late and have found this as a guide to just about anything i want to do in the outdoors.
I have used it to guide me through making baskets and containers in the wilderness, (and an easter basket for my wife), for skinning a wild animal, for making knifes, arrows, etc. from flint and bone, for guiding me to some edible wild treats. I could go on and on about the uses for this book. And even if this book isn't complete on a particular subject it will guide you to a book that does. Whether it's to one of his books or another field guide series.
Good place to start.......2007-02-11
This book is a great place to start if you're interested in learning outdoor survival. Very practical, not just what to do, but how to think when you're if you're stuck in a survival situation. Clear directions, simple illustrations. Not as dry as, say, a Boy Scout manual.
Survival at it's best........2007-01-10
Tom Brown is a mastermind.I got this book read it,then got all of his field guides. Outdoor survival is my love and Tom Brown has taken me to a whole other level. BUY IT!
Keep this in your pack. .......2006-07-26
This book is the best starting place for those wishing to learn about wilderness survival. The book is well organized and a pleasure to read. The subject matter can be dry, but Mr. Brown does a good job of interlacing his personal experiences with the instructional material. There are two reasons I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. 1) I think it could use more diagrams and pictures. Without an instructor by your side it would be easy to misunderstand some of the more technical skills covered. 2) This book is mainly for temperate regions. While much of the material is useful for any climate, it is missing tropical and artic specific information. Mr. Brown's knowledge of survival and tracking techniques is second to none. His field guides should be on every outdoor enthusiast's book shelf, and this book should be in your pack with you at all times.
Product Description
This is a very funny book. From the Foreword entitled A Guide to Apportioning Blame throughout such insightful topics as the use of aids, equipment, history, costs of the sport and physical fitness required (none of which are presented in a manner that would be recognized by readers of any other book on dressage), the reader is in for a laugh-out-loud treat. Margaret Odgers has been there and what makes her material so screamingly funny is the core of Absolute Truth that runs through the book. Eva Sandor's charming cartoons alone are worth the purchase price.
Customer Reviews:
Laugh-out-loud funny!.......2006-05-13
Anyone who has ridden dressage will find this book hilarious. After I read it, I purchased three more for my trainer and two of my fellow "DQ's". We all talk about certain passages and the silly and sometimes sad truths of the typical dressage journey. A must read!
Great read for riders of all disciplines!.......2005-01-21
What a funny book! Ms. Odgers experiences trancend the world of dressage as her experiences contained universal truths that I am sure are felt across equine disciplines.
Highly recommend it for riders of all ilks. AND it makes a greate gift!

dissappointing.......2002-11-02
This book is really only a small bird species guide. It really doesn't tell how to care for birds much at all. If you want a small reference manual for caged bird species then this book is for you. If you want a bird care guide, look elsewhere.
Good one for the collection.......2002-10-05
Informative and a nice quick referance book to have, good value and well presented.
Good details with pictures.......2002-04-27
This book has easy to understand literature and has plenty of pictures.
A vast well of information on different bird species!.......1998-08-25
As a Veterinary Technician, bird breeder and bird enthusiast,I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in bird keeping. It is not limited to the normal birds as you might find in aviculture, as it has sections on wild birds, and birds of prey. It has 8 sections high-lighting the different families of birds, then breaks that down species by specie. It has a nice intro to bird keeping, housing, basic care and diet. I would have liked to see more info on manufactured parrot diets, but the author does have illistrations showing different seed diets available. In the birds section, this manual REALLY shines! it gives easy to understand symbols for at-a-glance comparisons to other birds. Some of these are: ease of care, size, noise level, aviary type, temperment, and basic breeding info. The photos of the birds are breath taking, and the book boasts over 200 of them! The last section deals with disease and first aid, a topic which would be a manual on its own, and the book gives good information in an easy to understand way. It's also a nice high quality soft cover book, that you can return to over and over. A must while at the bird show!

Customer Reviews:
a fun read.......2005-06-02
This book was entertaining. If you love Brittany's you will find this book to be a fun read. It was real life with Brittany's. It gave me a new appreciation and understanding for the Brittany I have lived with for the last year.
A Warm and touching journey.......2003-03-05
Mr.Buchanan made me laugh uncontrollably and cry as deeply. I read this book in one sitting and was so moved I proceeded to purchase several for friends. Anyone who has ever loved a pet - of any kind - will never forget this book. The author writes with acute sensitivity and extraordinary humor. One will never look at tomato juice in the same way after "Living With Brittanys".
Bravo....and 20 stars!!!
Fine Memoir.......2003-03-03
This book confirmed what I remember about Brittanys from childhood; they are mishievous, physically challenging, and personable. I especially enjoyed reading about the effect that the distinct personalities of three Brittanys had on the owners. The special attention that these two people gave to their dogs and the pain that they experienced when the first two died is particularly poignant. Humorous and in some cases hilarious incidents punctuate this fine memoir. I also found the description of beautiful wilderness areas compelling. This is an uplighting and inspirational book for troubled times.
High expectations, bitter disappointment.......2003-02-04
As a prospective Brittany owner I have been researching the breed for about 6 months and from the outside, "Living with Brittanys:A Survival Guide" seemed like it would provide me with the essential information I needed to decide whether the breed was right for me. Sadly, I was bitterly disappointed. "Living with Brittanys" is a frustratingly OVER-descriptive, self indulgent short story that actually made me angry in parts because of it's non-relevance to the subject matter. The story itself could have been about ANY dog and I learned all I needed to know in the last two pages through a bullet pointed list of common brittany traits. I wish I had saved both my money and time.
Living with Brittanys: A Survival Guide.......2001-02-21
Since I had the honor of meeting these three dogs, the descriptions of their lives with the two owners meant more to me than the average person; however I will attempt to be unbiased. This account will certainly give one the idea of what different personalities dogs have within the breed which can affect your choice of a dog that must suit your lifestyle and surroundings. Through semantic skill and vivid descriptions of the terrain, the reader will sense Bill's affection for the environment, the need to respect it, and our responsibility to take care of it. Most importantly the reader will learn the pitfalls, the pleasures, and the humor of owning a Brittany.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Holiday knitting fun.......2007-09-21
I really like that the projects are sorted according to how long it will take to complete them. I wish that there were patterns for bags and baby blankets.
Nice projects hard to find yarn.......2007-01-12
There were a few projects that I would like to do. However, most projects weren't too unique - I found similar ones in other books. There were a few that were odd and wouldn't do. When I decided to do one of the projects, I couldn't find the yarn recommended and spent a long time searching for a comparable one. In general they use high end, nice yarns.
Great book, but MANY of the patterns are available in magazines!.......2006-11-11
Right after I purchased this book, I started receiving the '06 holiday issues of all the knitting magazines I subscribe to. I was a little disappointed to see so many of the patterns re-printed (with the exact same photos so they were a easy to spot) in this season's magazines. I kind of feel like I paid for them twice! I should have just skipped the book.
But---the book is beautifully done and photographed. But in my opinion, many of the patterns are pretty time consuming (many with lots of finishing), so I'm not sure they will be very fast gift projects. And many of them are pretty advanced patterns.
Beautiful photos of knitting projects.......2006-11-10
The book is a good mix of moderate to advanced knitting projects that would make good gifts for any occasion. Some of the patterns focus on holidays, such as Christmas Stockings to hang at the fireplace, while others are all-purpose items such as afghans or mittens. The photography puts you in a holiday mood. The directions are clear and well organized, starting with quick projects and progressing to more time-intense challenges.
Excellent book...beware the toe up stocking.......2006-09-23
I love this book. The illustrations are beautiful and I look forward to making many of the projects. I am currently taking a "Christmas Stocking" class at my local yarn shop. I decided on the snowflake stocking pattern. The "toe up" method is wonderful once completed, however, the instructions were somewhat confusing. Having said this, I would still make this stocking again. My next project will be the felted ornaments and as a self-proclaimed "Christmas nut" I am sure there will be many gifts resulting from this book as well. Thanks so much.
Book Description
Focusing solely on patterns and techniques for knitting Christmas stockings, these 18 eclectic projects are simple enough for the beginner and unique enough to interest experienced knitters who want to go beyond the traditional holiday stocking. Each step-by-step lesson is shown in full color and includes instructions and charts. Easy-to-knit alphabets are provided along with knitters’ graph paper for personalizing and dating each sock. Also included are miniature sock patterns for decorating packages and holiday trees.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for all Knitters.......2007-07-14
This book is well done and the layout is perfect for knitters of all abilities. I loved all the different pattern styles - you are sure to find that special stocking for that someone special in your life.
Christmas Stockings: 18 Holiday Treasures to Knit.......2007-01-14
I like it! I'm knitting one of the stockings and plan to do more. I have also purchased a copy for a gift to my cousin...also a knitter!
Eh........2006-11-17
I purchased this book here in October. It took a month to receive it. A few days before receiving it in the mail I had stopped at a local bookstore to see if they had a copy (I was desperate and needed patterns for this years stockings). I wasn't that impressed, I've definitely seen better. Sure, there are a couple patterns that are nice but I don't think it's worth the $. So I returned the book. I'm glad I had a chance to look at it before it finally arrived.
I'm also surprised to see the promise of 2 day shipping. If you're intending on getting this for some last minute Christmas knits, don't count on it.
For that Something Special for Someone Special.......2006-03-16
I love to knit. My gift to new babies is a Christmas stocking. I think of it as a special blessing of this childs new life. While knitting on it I am thinking about all the love this child is going to have and the hopes for the child's future. This book has so many ideas. Everyone a winner. I can't wait to knit all of the stockings in the book.
A Great Project Book.......2005-12-18
I bought this book on clearance at a local craft store. So far I have only done the miniatures in the book (a mini-mitten and mini-stocking done on size 2 and 3 double-pointed needles and super thin yarn) which have been rewarding my patience for learning a new skill (double-pointed needles) by knitting up rather quickly (and attractively).
So a word of warning to anyone that's not a super-experienced knitter: most of the stockings in this book utilize advanced techniques, including Fair Isle and Intarsia color methods, cables (both simple and advanced patterns), and almost all of them are knit in the round (which means double-pointed needles are an absolute must). Luckily I can tell you that I have never knitted on double-pointed needles before and the little projects in here are a cute, easy foray into the world of knitting in the round.
All of the designs are adorable, and if they are too difficult (I don't knit in color yet) can be easily adapted to your skill level. The patterns include a variety of national styles, from Celtic to Victorian to Austrian, and are very beautiful. The editor has included some information on "design-your-own" though the instructions are pretty simplistic - but they do cover the gauges. Speaking of which, most of these are knit in worsted-weight (and they do suggest brands but don't fuss at you about substitutions), with at least one bulky-weight stocking and a couple of very lightweight stockings. My favorite is the Gansey stocking, the first in the book, which is knit from a solid color, smooth-ply yarn, and features snowflakes in a purl design - I plan to make these for my mantle someday. Also as I mentioned the little mittens and stockings knit in miniature are adorable and will make great gift tags with a little roll of parchment with the "To/From" written and folded inside.
A great buy! I definitely recommend this book, even if you're not a very advanced knitter. If you're a beginner, though, you're better off with something else.
Book Description
Shall I knit you a hat to keep your ears warm?A delightful tale of holiday giving When Mother Rabbit knits a cozy winter hat for Little Rabbit, he likes it very much. In fact, he likes it so much that he thinks all of his friends need hats for Christmas. And he has some very creative designs in mind. While Little Rabbit gets wrapped up in the joy of giving, everyone is reminded that friendship is the best gift of any season.
Customer Reviews:
Pleased on two counts!.......2006-04-09
I was pleased by this book on two counts. As a knitter I loved the creative and fanciful designs of mother rabbit's hats. I could totally relate to her knitting frenzy during the Christmas holiday.
Secondly, as a mother of three children, I was surprised at how enthralled my children were by the simple story. Well, my 10 year old son (Harry Potter fan that he is) was a little bored by the charming story, but both my 8 yo daughter and 6 yr old son loved the book and fought over who got to look at the pictures after I was finished reading the book out loud. They especially liked trying to figure out which hat was going to which animal when mother rabbit was knitting them. The illustrations are especially captivating and full of detail. Altogether I loved this book and it is sure to be a year-round favorite, not just at Christmas!
A wonderful addition to our Christmas collection.......2005-08-01
I received this book today and I was not disappointed. It's a lovely sweet story with an 'it's better to give than to receive moral'. The illustrations are beautiful and unusual. I know this will be a favourite in our Christmas collection. A must have.
Knitting Friendship.......2004-12-13
[This review was first published in the "Ephrata (Pa.) Review."]
A blizzard is blowing in but Little Rabbit is ready. His mother has knit him a cozy hat. Little Rabbit worries about his friends, however. He suggests they should receive hats for Christmas too, an idea Mother Rabbit seconds. Little Rabbit designs headgear appropriate to horse, goose, cat, dog, squirrel and deer. The friends aren't sure what to make of the quirky hats--until they see just how toasty the custom designs keep them. This snug story of friendship and mother-child love encapsulates the Christmas message that giving begets joy.
Adorable New Children's Book for the Holidays.......2004-09-22
Mother Rabbit decides to knit a wonderful winter hat for Little Rabbit to protect his long ears from the frosty cold weather, and to keep them nice and cozy. Little Rabbit adores the hat, and decides that it would be the perfect Christmas gift for all of their animal friends. After all, it would come in very handy for the horrible winter storms, and it's a present that would be cherished by all of them for years and years to come. Mother Rabbit thinks that this is a lovely idea, so, with the help of Little Rabbit, and his intrepid designs, and vivid imagination, she begins knitting, and has soon created wonderful gifts for everyone she and Little Rabbit know.
Kate Klise is known for her wonderful writing, and SHALL I KNIT YOU A HAT? is no exception. While it doesn't contain the normal page count of her many novels for middle readers, it contains a very enjoyable story, filled with adorable prose, and a wonderful message of thinking of others around the holiday season, that will be loved by young readers the world over, whether they are reading it at Christmastime, or in the middle of the summer. And, as usual, M. Sarah Klise, who is known for her descriptive illustrations has created a splendid collection of colorful, and vivid illustrations that will capture the heart of even the biggest grinch. If you are only purchasing one holiday children's book this year for your family, this is the one to get, as the whole family will be thrilled at the prospect of reading it together.
