It's every pet owner's nightmare: suddenly your four-legged friend isn't breathing. What to do? There is no 911 for pets, so it's up to you to save a life. The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats is a straightforward guide that covers both major problems--CPR, heat stroke, and strangulation--and minor ones, such as swollen tails, ingrown nails, and flea allergies. Beginning with simple tests and explanations of general care issues like dehydration examinations and triage, this guide then moves on to an alphabetical listing of every possible situation, from arrow wounds to worms.
The individual sections are good for both general reading and instant assistance. Each one starts with a notice of when to call the vet--immediately, the same day, or as needed. It also lists what items from your pet's medicine chest will be needed, which may include anything from corn syrup to towels and panty hose. The information that follows this simple checklist is divided into "do this now," "special situations," "follow-up care," and "the best approach." Whenever necessary, simple sketches are included to help show proper technique, such as fashioning an instant muzzle from a pair of nylons, or how to cover a dog's head in case of an ear-flap injury. Relying frequently on common household items like antihistamines, turkey basters, Gatorade, and plastic wrap, this guide assumes most of us won't have special medical training or supplies and focuses on very specific and simple methods of helping your pet achieve the best possible care. Even more importantly, many suggestions are included on prevention of accidents--isn't it easier to get that window screen repaired than to rush your kitty to the vet after a bad fall?--Jill Lightner

Superb !.......2007-09-06
This is a wonderful movie. Exquisitely executed in period costume, with a world class orchestra. It was delightfully free of uneccessary verbage and saturated with eroticism. Sandra
I found this book a must-have for pet professionals.......2007-07-12
I own Animal Companions pet sitting service in Houston, Texas, and I found this book a must-have for pet professionals. Laid out in a format similar to a Physician's Desk Reference, you may easily and quickly (and time is always of the essence with a sick pet!) look up information based on presenting symptoms.
It is an amazing supplement to hands-on first aid training. I immediately purchased a copy of this book for myself and each of my employees, to keep in our cars right next to our pet first aid kit. I also picked up a copy to keep at home, for my own furry loved ones.
An Outstanding Mini-Encyclopedia of Pet Care.......2007-07-03
There is so much useful information in just this one volume. What's more, there is a symptom finder, allowing a quick overview of possible causes of given symptoms among dogs and cats. There are two tables of poison hazards, including one which tells what human medications should never be given to cats (although veterinarians advise that no human medications should ever be given to animals without checking with them). The animal conditions that can be helped by first aid range from life-threatening situations to such usually-minor things as constipation in cats. There are many helpful diagrams. One of them shows how to make a homemade Elizabethan collar and another one shows how to restrain a seriously-injured animal for the trip to the vet.
Good reading, good addition to your medicine cabinet........2007-02-07
We had dogs bitten by a rattlesnake. I had a dog with an allergic reaction.
What do you do? Sure, you can google up an answer, but it's nice to have this book on hand for quick reference.
It is well written and you can actually just read it cover to cover. I learned a lot.
Excellent source.......2006-11-08
I got this book to better care for my adult and senior dogs. I love that the book not only focuses on First Aid but prevention as well as recommendations for when to call the vet. The injuries and illnesses section covers everything you can think of and provides lots of background information as well as treatment. My favorite feature is the recommended medicine chest as well as dosing.

An indispensable reference book for dog and cat owners.......2002-07-23
The second worst thing that can happen to your pet is for him to get sick or hurt; the truly worst thing is for you as the pet owner to be totally unprepared when accident or misfortune strikes. This book covers all the basics of first aid care for dogs and cats, from cuts and bee stings to convulsions, choking, and traumatic, life-threatening injuries. Steps to take in any given situation are laid out one at a time, and a number of very helpful illustrations make all of the information as direct and understandable as it can be. The book is arranged alphabetically by first aid topic, so you can always find the information you need quickly and easily. You really don't even have to read the book. Just having it close at hand when something happens to your pet can make a real difference; it can even help save your loyal companion's life. I would recommend reading the book, though, or at least glancing through it. You can learn important warning signs to watch for in your pet's behavior and help catch a problem in its early stages. In cases of real emergency, knowing what not to do can be just as important as knowing what you should do. You would do well to follow the precautionary suggestions the book describes--putting together a pet first aid kit, for example. By no means can or should this book take the place of professional veterinary care, a point which the text emphasizes, but it can help keep your pet healthy and happy.
A must have for any pet lover........1999-07-20
This book is a great help to me when my pets have any bumps or scratches. It is a wonderful source of first aid information that any pet lover should have.
Pet book is paws up.......1997-10-21
This book is so helpful. I think every dog and cat owner should have one. It is so easy to use and can save yourself a lot of money in Vet visits if you're like me and worry about every little thing that might be wrong with your 'baby." I like the glossary and illustrations. I'm getting one as a Christmas gift for all the dog owners in my family. You can't beat it for $8.
Fantastic reference volume by public health veterinarian.......1997-07-15
I couldn't agree more with the previous comment. I would only add that Dr. Bobbie Mammato, the author, conveys her wealth of experience in emergency veterinary care and public health, and makes this an extremely readable and useful text. In fact, why isn't Dr. Mammato credited as the author on your Web site
A must for every family with a cat or dog!.......1997-07-03
Would you know what to do if your cat or dog had an emergency?
I worked on the book so I'm biased, but...
"Pet First Aid" may help save your pet's life!
From the American Red Cross, the nation's largest humanitarian organization, and The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization. All proceeds support the efforts of both non-profit organizations.
Makes a great gift for everyone you know that owns a cat or dog.

Get back in print!.......2004-09-12
This is an incredible and easy to read resource on possible future inventions, jobs, technologies, houses, types of living structures (e.g., living houses, deep underground, floating cities, flying cities, space farms), space travel, how to live a more natural lifestyle, the type which might come back into vogue in the future, recycling, future languages, how to achieve world peace, you name it. It's for anyone who's interested in how life might be like in the future, whether you want the information for a story, book, or article you're writing or you're just interested in the information for its own sake. I know it got me fascinated enough to read other books on this very subject, and upset that we haven't yet got the majority of the things described, like the terraforming of Mars and the Moon, flying cities, and houses made entirely out of things like soda bottles and empty cartons of bleach. While it's still available in good libraries, it really needs to get back in print and to be updated; things have changed a lot since 1982!
An excellent book for kids, and all interested in the future.......1997-10-22
This is a fascinating book that outlines a myriad of different technologies and scenarios about the future. From housing, to food, longevity research, floating cities, robotics, space-travel, and colonization.
I've shown this to various futurist friends, and they all agree: This book should be re-published, and revised to include the latest in technological advances. It belongs on the shelf of every child, and anyone else who's concerned about the future.
Find a copy, if you can. It's great!

Best Kids CPR Book Available!.......2004-02-12
Craig Jones does a wonderful job of writing and illustrating this book. There need to be more activities these days that parents and kids can do together, and this is one of them. These books get kids interested in learning, and excited about it! As a bonus, you and your child can learn animal CPR, in the unlikely event anything happens to your beloved "family member." A recommended book for all!

Quick story: A few months ago I was driving and saw a dog running beside the road and when I was only a few feet from him, he was struck by a car. I rushed him to the vet hospital but sadly, he passed away. I went straight to the book store and picked up this book on pet first aid, learned about treating a pet who is going into shock and now keep an animal first aid kit,
blanket and copy of this book in the trunk of my car. This was the only book I could find that addressed the issue of helping an animal who is struck by a car. It is such important information and I was thankful to find it.

Helpful As Far As It Goes~~.......2002-02-24
Dr. Bamberger, like many veterinarian authors of care text, is rightly concerned that pet owners see experts as soon as possible. The text is clear, informative, and helpful, and has some good basic techniques. They are most helpful if you have on hand veterinary supplies (sterile gauze, Ace bandages, etc)--hopefully, in an emergency situation you'll be able to put your hand on such things! Also, an awful lot of the text seems to concentrate on what NOT to do--this is important, but owners would be better served with emphasis on what can be done. This is a complaint I have about nearly all the pet first aid books I've seen. Also, since the book was published in 1993, I also wonder how up-to-date information may be. ...
A "Must Have" Book for Every Cat Owner!.......2000-01-29
As a "multiple cat" household we have many books around our home on cat health care, but this one is a "must buy" and a "must read" book to help you and your family prepare for an emergency with your cat friend. Not only is the text clear and understandable, there are also excellent drawings to help you implement what may be required to save your cat's life. Although we hope to never have to use what we've learned, as with first aid for humans, it's a nice skill to have, "just in case". If you have cats, please keep them indoors and spay and neuter your animals! It will help them live long, happy and safe lives!

Customer Reviews:
Love the ideas..........2007-08-08
The book give a lot of great ideas for action cards... And those ideas can be manipulated for variations so easily.
DVD Rom Purchase.......2007-03-12
The product was exactly as advertised. It came in a timely manor. I would purchase from this Vendor again.
Need better examples and instructions........2006-11-20
I was disappointed in this book. I have been making my own Christmas cards for 25 years, am always looking for new ideas and I love pop-ups. I felt that the examples were, for the most part, uninspired, too contemporary, and not relevant to the biggest card-giving occasions. The instructions sometimes were too vague to complete the project. I really think the basics taught in Paul Jackson's "The Pop-Up Book" were much better even though he provides no patterns or specific instructions for the awesome examples he shows. I'm glad to see Jackson has put out another book WITH instructions. This book is okay if you want an inexpensive substitute but it really doesn't show the true depth of action cards nor provide any new ideas that impressed me. I want to look at examples and think "Wow! I can do that!".
would have liked clearer instructions.......2006-10-30
I have been crafting for about 40 years and felt the instructions for some of the ideas could have been a lot better. The ideas are great. Working through the instructions has often been very frustrating compared to other books I have.
Cards That Pop-Up, Fliip & Slide.......2006-03-10
Great book, although I found some of the instructions a bit tricky. Overall the book is very imformative on the different ways to make some interesting cards.
