A great insight into the mind of the Gordon Setter.......2004-04-27
After being owned by a Gordon for seven years and now re-reading the book, it is obvious how well the Sorbys know these dogs. They have great insight into the inner workings of the mind of the Gordon in how the dog deals with other dogs, training, field and confirmation competitions. I do not hunt but these are great dogs and the book is as close to an owner's manual as you can get. I wish children came with a book like this.
It's Ok, but..............2003-02-20
Remember, this book is written by one of the biggest breeders of Gordon Setters in the USA. That said, the book does have a number of valid points it makes, but then sometimes you have to wade through the propaganda.
That said, it's an interesting read and if you are a student of the Gordon Setter breed, it does belong on your bookshelf.
Make the most of your Hunting Companion........2000-02-15
Sue and Norm Sorby literally wrote the book on pointing dogs with this one. It not only tells you how to train a Gordon Setter (or any other pointing breed of the finest quality field stock), but also how to pick a pup, when to train, how to deal with different personalities (yours and the dogs), showing, field trialing, and breeding. In short the essential guide for anyone interested in getting the most from a great hunting dog. The book is written in such a way that even a first time bird dog owner can understand and come away with a "I can do this!" attitude. A must read for anyone considering the purchase of a "hunting companion." Thanks Sue and Norm!
Awesome guide to being owned by a Gordon Setter!.......1999-11-01
Having had several "pointing" dogs I thought that I knew everything. Then I purchased a Gordon Setter from the Author and WOW! The breed is peerless and the book is more than a "how to"" guide. The insights and training tips for the breed are excellent. The humor is great! I give it 4 paws up!
a must have guide to understanding and training your Gordon........1999-06-27
This is a very well written and very informative book. Written with some humor but matter of fact and covers every question that someone new to gordons would have. They cover a wide range of topics that touch every subject from pups starting in the field, the show ring, first aid, care of breeding stock etc.The amount of information is fabulous and I recommend it to any Gordon owner - beginner or seasoned vetran!!

Good Variety of Information for the Experienced Dog Owner.......2002-06-26
Contains information on various kennels in the US, and abroad. Has a small chapter on grooming for show, but is definitely geared towards someone who knows what they are doing. Beautiful photos of past champions, as well as good illustrations and photos to help you find a correct conformationed show dog. Highlights Gordons both as Show and Field Dogs. Nice coffee table book.
Very helpful book,Highlights the breed perfectly........1998-11-20
Jose has the knowledge of the breed and has very kindly passed it on to us in this very useful book. The information is priceless to those of us who are relatively new to the breed. I know it has helped me on many occasions. It takes pride of place on my book shelf.

ALL SETTERS: THEIR HISTORIES, REARING AND TRAINING. By Freeman Lloyd. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in the early 1930s, this extremely scarce work on Setters is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. Vintage Dog Books have republished it, using the original text and photographs as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a much respected dog man of his time. Terhune says of him, "I know of no other expert who has Lloyds's peculiarly complete equipment of blended education and genius, along all canine lines. With him dogs are an inspired life-study." Although he penned several important dog books, this is probably his best. The book's one hundred and twenty seven pages contain detailed chapters on: Setters of Yesterday and Today. - The Setter in Art. - Early Llewellin Setters in America. - English Laverack Setters in America. - A Glance at the Past. - Scenting Powers. - Various Paintings of Setters. - Training Setters as Gun Dogs. - Force Training Collars. - Temperament. - Rearing. - Reminiscences. - Irish Setters. - The Black and Tan or Gordon Setter. - Points of the Gordon, English, and Irish Setter. - Recent Setter Importations. All chapters are lavishly illustrated with vintage photos of famous English and American Setters and their use in dog art. This is a fascinating read for any Setter enthusiast or historian of the breed, and also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. "A dog quite unrivalled by any other of the canine species." Maxwell 1833. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

A blend of technique and journal..........2006-07-24
This book is a blend of personal insights and techniques that shows not just what it takes to be a master carpenter, but the path this particular one took to get there. The book reads like a cross between tips and tricks of the trade and a diary.
IF YOU LIKE NORM...........2006-02-17
I originally bought this book just because Norm Abrams wrote it and I am a big fan of THIS OLD HOUSE and THE NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP.But, it is an engaging read and one I find myself going..."ahhhhhhhhhh" or "ahhhhhhhh, hahhhhhhhhhh!" to. Add it to your "toolbox." It will help you be better at whatever you do.
Makes a great gift too to recognize members of your workgroup, fellow fans of Norm, and those you would like to gently influence.
A Peek Inside Norm's Toolbox.......2006-02-14
Norm Abram is the much admired and even beloved host of the PBS show New Yankee Workshop and a longtime fixture on This Old House. In Measure Twice, Cut Once, we get a peek inside Norm's extensive toolbox, as Norm simply talks tools -- his likes, his dislikes, and, of course, more than a few helpful tips.
Norm has a reputation for loving power tools but in Measure Twice, Cut Once he focuses on his favorite hand tools. His knowledge is impressive as he covers a wide spectrum of hand tools -- folding rules, tape measures, chalk boxes, squares, levels, plumb bobs, saws, planes, knives, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, hammers, crowbars and chisels. Norm's favorite tool is the right tool, be it a power tool or a hand tool -- whatever is best for the job at hand.
I read somewhere that Norm wrote most of this book by dictating it into a recorder as he drove to and from various job sites. It shows -- the book is loose and conversational and Norm even gets a little personal. He talks a great deal about his father, who died shortly after this book was finished. The connection between Norm and his father through carpentry is heartfelt and it's nice to see this personal side of Norm.
Norm knows that carpenters are taught some skills and that they learn other skills through personal experience, but he believes that all of it should be passed on to others, just as he learned from his father. The craft and skill of carpentry naturally passes from one generation to the next and so on. That's what Norm tries to do through his TV shows and through books like Measure Twice, Cut Once. He isn't trying to impress you or overwhelm you. He just wants you to put this knowledge to work.
Maybe the book for a complete novice........2006-02-08
When this book was billed as a distillation of a master carpenter's years of experience, I eagerly bought it, took it home and began reading. I should have stayed in the bookstore and read a few pages. I'm still waiting for the master craftsman insights. Wow, I didn't know a keyhole saw was for cutting small holes or a level might break when it is dropped off the top of a house. And I'm not sure why I should be interested in a picture of Norm when he was a toddler. Thanks, Norm. I'm glad I bought this used. No wonder this $20 book sells used for $3. OK, if you have NEVER picked up a saw before, this book is for you.
Buy once, return once.......2005-08-04
That this selection sells for $1.25 is a surprise. The price appears to be inflated. This book falls flat in the prediction that "Norm distills a lifetime of experience into seventy short, simple lessons". Such as? Sharpening a pencil? We learn how to sharpen a carpenter's pencil...sort of. The reader sits white knuckled as we learn that a stainless steel handsaw was stolen from Norm's tool box. We learn that a level breaks when dropped from 1-1/2 stories. Who would have thought? Norm tells us that the combination square's uses could fill several pages of this 5" x 7" book. We learn of three uses and three of the most obvious. Cute? Warm and fuzzy? Ok. However, if one is looking forward to learning the secrets of 30+ years he ought to look elsewhere. The "Lessons from a Master Carpenter" are few indeed. Abram apparently could not share the secrets. Come now, no doubt that Abram is a skilled builder. Without a doubt he ought to avoid writing books and resume building. Pass on this one unless found at twenty-five cents.

Measure Once, Cut from Templates should be name of book.......2005-08-27
Tolpin delivers an excellent piece that seems designed for intermediate or seriously aspiring woodworkers. My guess is that it would scare off novices rather quickly. I think I fit into the right target audience, and I enjoyed the book enough to read it cover-to-cover in two sittings. I will not, however, follow all his advice - at least not yet in my woodworking career. He explains great techniques for the mechanics of going from idea sketches to scale drawing, to life sized drawings. Like I said, I think my level is where the book is aimed, but frankly, the artistic part of design is where I feel the weakest, and his book doesn't help a whole lot there beyond the golden ratio. I didn't expect the book to do that for me, but neither did I expect it to spend time on drafting. Since I do not yet feel comfortable with coming up with my own detailed designs, the mechanics of putting the designs on paper are not that useful to me yet. Further, if I ever get to that comfort level with design, I'm not sure I will need the drafting process to implement them.
btw, the title for my review is based on the fact that Tolpin, like most, recommends that you keep measuring off of rulers (etc.) to a minimum and use story sticks and the like whenever there is more than one piece to cut to a particular length.
Bottom line is that I would buy the book again, and would probably replace it if lost or destroyed. It would not be at the top of my list, however, and I would not give it as a gift to a raw novice who was just trying to see is s/he liked woodworking.
I Was Hoping For A Bit More.......2005-05-18
I don't know about you, but after years of hanging around serious woodworkers, constantly tuning and improving expensive equipment, and buying measuring tools accurate enough to build a space shuttle, I've come to the conclusion that accuracy is a goal never quite achieved. And that is if you are lucky. I can't tell you the number of times I've cut four boards of 'precisely' the same length, run them through a locked down finger joint jig, and managed to produce a box that is 1/16th of an inch wider from side to side than it is from front to back. So when I found Jim Tolpin's book I grabbed it on the hope that it contained the one secret I had missed.
Unfortunately, if you've spent three years woodworking you already know most of what is here. Tolpin's secret is simply the rigor of working through stages of drawing and then cutting to the drawing. Now I already use a drawing package to lay out work, so I can reel off life size diagrams that tell me everything is 1000th's. And I find it far more accurate to use the diagrams for assembly and rough measurement and fit every piece by hand. If for no other reason than the tendency of wood to change size with temperature, moisture, and the will of God. Tolpin's explanations are helpful if you don't use a design methodology at all. But if you follow his advice slavishly, you will through out more wood than you should.
What I did find very useful is his final section on what to do when you really don't get it right. Several of his tricks for changing the dimensions of a piece of wood which is the wrong size at the wrong time will save you the cost of the book in one cut. These aren't necessarily easy techniques, but they are far better options than giving up. I also found the pictures of some of his more exotic measuring tools very interesting. Although it will be a long time before I spend $200 on a depth gauge. There is a good section on proportion as well. Tolpin does describe some jigs, but there aren't any plans for them. For those you will have to look elsewhere.
I also wish Tolpin had spent some time on computer aided design - at least enough to show what it can do. More of us already have the equipment around, and it can save a lot of time and erasing. Still, if you are just starting out by yourself, without access to training, this is a useful volume to have on hand. It gets you past the point of thinking that creating a cabinet is a combination of magic and pure luck.
Good Book.......2002-07-29
I've finally read through this book. It was what I expected and I would recommend it for people to learn layout and how to go from a drawing to the work bench. It is a general book that gives you solid principles on measurement and proportion.
More Than You May Think.......2001-09-25
This book really surprised me. I was hopeful that it didn't simply tell you how to read a tape measure. And I was right. Just about any experience level will learn something from this book but the person new to woodworking will learn the most. I'm somewhat in between beginner and moderate experience and I was impressed. You learn some really nifty tricks for getting accurate angles, finding bisecting angles, working with arcs and more.
You also learn how to lay out a project to save material (and make your work easier).
Believe me, you will enjoy reading this book. Well written, informative and lots of clear color photos and other illustrations. No sloppy, halfhearted drawings in this one.
Good introductory woodworking book.......2001-07-09
This book bills itself as a course in shop math and measurement. With a few extra chapters, it could be an excellent introduction to woodworking. Tolpin takes us through the entire process from project design and layout to developing a list of materials and cut list. He then introduces a number of layout and marking tools to transfer the measurements accurately to the wood. Next, he talks about a number of cutting techniques, followed by a chapter on preventing and fixing mistakes.
The author raises an interesting point: if you can cut the work to the proper size, it doesn't matter if you have a numeric value for the dimension. There are a number of techniques such as story poles and marking devices which do not rely on numeric values, and which can be more accurate than conventional measurements. More common measuring tools are considered as well; he shows that there is more than meets the eye even with the common tape measure.
In the section on cutting to the lines, he shows a number of basic techniques on both hand tools and power tools. There is some interesting discussion here about tradeoffs between different tool choices. He also presents some simple jigs, which I am looking forward to building. The jigs here are much simpler than the ones he describes in Table Saw Magic. For a very small book, there is a wealth of information here which will take some time to digest. I heartily recommend the book.

He was acquitted in a criminal court, then found guilty in civil court, only to have the verdict overturned on appeal. But what does he do, now, when he knows he cannot live with himself unless he tells the truth? Well, he takes a high-risk stake by addressing the issue before his accusers in an ?I want to tell you!? fashion. Unfortunately, a long tale unwinds before the truth totally comes out. But, what a tale it is as the story bounces from LA to Chicago before finally coming to rest in the heart of America!

From the supplier: Traditional assessment in the real property management business has focused on readily and easily available performance criteria such as occupancy rates, net operating income, average rent per sq ft and return on investment among other variables. These evaluations tend to explain what happens but furnish little information on the actual causes. Goodman Segar GVA developed a new performance measurement system for its customer service division in a nine-step process which solicited the participation of all maintenance and customer service employees. A detailed list of best practice and performance measurements were established for all pertinent areas relating to the company mission to serve the client including community involvement and client contact frequencies. The system was introduced in all areas of the firm and is conducted on a regular basis.
